A

lack of parking at an essential service facility in Kuils River is being addressed.

This comes as a concerned resident of Kuils River, who takes his wife to Netcare Kuils River Hospital for monthly checkups, tells TygerBuger how the lack of parking at the hospital has become a very frustrating problem.

“Every time we come to the hospital there is no parking and we have to park on a field which is quite a distance from the entrance,” he says.

According to hospital general manager, Nolan Daniels, the hospital is aware of the

problem, as they do receive complaints from patients and visitors regarding the limited parking bays.

“While we realise that the insufficient parking available to patients and visitors is an inconvenience, for which we sincerely apologise, we do have plans to provide more parking,” he says.

The current parking capacity at the hospital is 337 parking bays, with allocated bays for resident doctors as well as senior management of the facility, and the remaining staff members, patients and visitors using the upper deck, the parking lot adjacent to the BP garage, riverbank temporary bays, as well as any other available (non-demarcated) parking bays.

Daniels does, however, confirm that the

hospital has plans to extend the parking area. “Since October 2016 we have had a 10-year lease with the municipality for the plot of land across from the river in Russell Street, for which we have been paying a monthly rental.”

The purpose of the lease is to avail a further 125 parking bays for patients and visitors.

“Development for this commenced in June and unfortunately after a few weeks of work, construction had to be halted.

Work was suspended with immediate effect by the City of Cape Town after it was established that, due to an oversight, operations had started before the plans had been signed off,” explains Daniels.

Vrolike Vinkies Educare holding fundraiser As part of their annual Debutant Function to be held on Friday 6 October, Vrolike Vinkies Educare Centre in Kuils River is embarking on a fundraising campaign.

According to Luzette Alexander, principal of the Educare, the fundraising effort involves a raffle, with the first prize being a boat cruise for two adults and two children from Cape Town to Durban valued at R15 000; the second prize being a boat

cruise for two adults from Cape Town to nowhere, spending two fun-filled nights at sea, valued at R8000, and the third prize being a weekend away (bed and breakfast) for two adults and two children valued at R3000.

The centre is calling on the public to support their efforts to raise R150 000 through this fundraising initiative.

Daniels also confirms that a site development plan, for which they are still awaiting approval, has been submitted to the munici-

pality to extend the current parking deck by an additional 70 parking bays.

In an effort to assist patients and visitors who have trouble walking, the hospital has increased the number of disabled bays, at both the front and back entrances of the hospital, from three to seven, and they also have an allocated member of the security company available to shuttle patients and visitors

to and from their vehicles.

Furthermore, Daniels asks that patients and visitors bear with the hospital as the situation is being attended to.

“We humbly apologise for the unexpectedly extended inconvenience to our loyal supporters and assure them that we are currently doing everything possible to alleviate the situation.”

Visagie feud resolved

n official complaint lodged against DA ward councillor Desirée Visagie in Kuils River was recently resolved by the office of the Speaker.

In correspondence to the complainant, JC MacFarlane, a resident in Visagie’s ward, Speaker Dirk Smit advised that the complaint had been addressed by him directly and that he will monitor the situation henceforth.

“The matter is accordingly regarded as closed and viewed as finalised.

“Thank you for bringing the matter to the Speaker’s attention,” said Mersini Iakovidis, a spokesperson for the Speaker’s office.

When TygerBurger enquired about the processes followed, we were informed that disciplinary matters are privileged and confidential in terms of the applicable legislation.

“Councillors have a right to confidentiality similar to practice in all disciplinary matters.

“No comment can therefore be given on such matters,” Smit said.

MacFarlane laid the complaint in July this year, saying that Visagie was not involved in her community, in that she did not attend certain community meetings.

“She does not reply to me on service delivery issues which I bring to light,” he said at the time.

Visagie at the time defended the complaint by saying she had very valid reasons for not attending the said meetings and had informed the office of the Speaker about it at the time.

Visagie attended the community development meeting held last week.

Hot pot of oil causes fire panic in Kuils River DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A fire was prevented at a home in Kuils River when a security officer from Basset Alarms responded to a panic alarm last week.

The incident took place at about 09:50 on Wednesday morning, when the domestic worker put a pot of oil on the stove and left it there to continue with her chores.

“The domestic worker, after smelling the smoke in the kitchen, ran to push the panic alarm,” says a spokesperson for Basset.

When the officer arrived at the house, he noticed black smoke coming from the chimney.

“He met the domestic worker who informed him simply that the kitchen was burning. Upon inspection he saw a flame of about one metre high. “He ran to fetch the fire extinguisher from his vehicle and ensured that all the power was off before extinguishing the fire.”

Brackenfell Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene at about 10:11.

Rail cable theft remains a thorn in all sides T wo suspected cable thieves were arrested between Unibell and Pentech stations on Thursday 7 September and in the early morning of Friday 8 September.

The Rapid Rail Response Unit (RRPU) arrested a suspect on Thursday, while Metrorail’s Special Operations Unit arrested the second on Friday. Both suspects had dug trenches to cut multicore signalling cables.

Regional manager, Richard Walker, congratulated both teams. The latest arrests are the twentieth and twenty-first since the beginning of July 2017, he said. Both suspects were handed over to Belhar police and cases made in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act. Due to relentless random vandalism of signals, two of the four railway lines serving the Khayelitsha area are inoperable. “Our priority is to restore signalling in the central service, as any incident occurring on the remaining two lines leads to major delays and leaves us without any flexibil-

ity to provide alternative routing for trains during service disruptions,” Walker said.

Trains are being manually authorised in sections currently without automated signalling.

The alternative working method is operationally safe, but very time consuming. Average travel time to and from the area is invariably extended by more than 60 minutes.

He said conventional protective measures are proving more and more ineffective.

“The continued threat against our technicians in the Langa-Bontheuwel-NetregNyanga area makes it impossible to dispatch teams without armed guards. Our teams place their lives at risk to do repairs and risk being robbed of their equipment,” he said.

According to him, repair teams were doing their utmost to recover functionality of the lines. He empathised that with the plight of desperate commuters bearing the brunt of fewer and shorter trains, their MPS team en-

forces operational safety compliance daily to prevent overcrowding. “We understand that people are tempted to travel between carriages, hang onto the front/back of the train and sit on top of the train in a desperate attempt to get to their destination. Metrorail has also stepped up their safety awareness campaigns at busy stations and on social media to make commuters aware of dangerous commuting behaviour and the risk of highvoltage (3000 volt) overhead electrical cables,” he said.

For their own safety, commuters are advised that the following are prohibited in terms of the Legal Succession Act: .Presence within Metrorail precincts without a valid ticket; smoking on trains/ stations; travelling in/on any part of a train not intended for such use; unreasonably inconveniencing other passengers; occupying a seat/entering a carriage one is not entitled to; disobeying reasonable instructions by

Metrorail employees; acting in any manner that could cause injury, death or damage; crossing railway lines illegally; hindering Metrorail from providing a service; removing any rail assets without lawful authority; carrying firearms without prior permission; interfering with communication between passengers and employees; failing to hand over lost property; wilfully obstructing/hindering a Metrorail employee in the execution of their duties; refusing to hand over/pay for a valid ticket on request; placing any part of one’s body closer than one metre from live equipment.

Metrorail offers a reward of up to R25 000 for any information leading to a conviction.

o encourage a culture of health, wellness and an active lifestyle through regular physical activity and health education in the province’s previously disadvantaged communities – this is the main aim of the Community Health Intervention Programmes (Chips).

Chips was established by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) in 1997 to address the growing prevalence of obesity and non-communicable diseases, including hypertension and diabetes.

Lynette Speelman, a member of Chips, says they strive to achieve their goal through their various intervention programmes.

“In August this year we reached the 20year mark of sustainable programme delivery in communities across the Cape Flats. To celebrate this 20-year milestone with the participating communities, we have decided to roll out a series of 5km fun runs to show off this successful partnership,” Speelman says.

Their theme for this celebratory road-

show is “Run your personal best race”, which kicks off in Kuils River on Saturday 16 September and culminates in a mass participation day of movement at the Chrysalis Academy in Tokai on Monday 18 November.

Speelman says they also launched Optifit Chips Matroosfontein 20 years ago.

“Club members are trained as leaders and they have grown the exercise programmes into a local resource that stands tall and firm,” she says.

There are eight branches and each branch will host a 5km fun walk in their own area. Matroosfontein will be hosting their walk on Saturday 7 October at Elsbury Park sports field.

“We are expecting our members, residents of Matroosfontein, members of our sister branches and various other sports clubs to join us. The registration process will commence at 07:00,” she says.

Speelman is also urging the community to join them either on a Monday evening at the Matroosfontein Civic Centre or on a Thursday evening at the Elsbury Park sports field (clubhouse) from 17:30 to 18:30 where participants can enjoy a fitness class (aerobics, step and circuit training).

Ward 19 to host Heritage Day celebrations Ward 19, in partnership with the Department of Social Development and Department of Sport and Recreation, will be celebrating Heritage Day on Monday 25 September at Highbury Park Educare Centre in Kuils River.

The celebrations will start at 11:00 and will run until 17:00. Edward Jonathan will be the master of ceremonies, with ward councillor Ricardo Saralina as the main speaker.

The day will feature heritage games, a talent show and live entertainment.

Entry is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring along a picnic basket or to come and braai, as free wood and firelighters will be provided, or to just come and enjoy the heritage food stalls on the day. Public invited to school’s family fun day Montessori Nina Nancy Preschool will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday 30 September for a family fun day.

The school is situated at 32 Rotterdam Road in Silversands, Kuils River.

It will be opening its doors to parents and the public in an effort to relay more information about the school’s daily programme and the various activities for children between the ages of 18 months and six years.

The family fun day will include learning more about the fire service, face painting, a jumping castle and food stalls.

K

uils River now has its own nature reserve, where local nature lovers can come and experience a little piece of heaven on earth... and a little birdie told me that what the new reserve is really pushing for right now is community ownership.

Haasendal Nature Reserve, so called due to the abundance of the Cape hare in the area, was established by the City of Cape Town in 2013, after the land was identified to be of great conservation importance, in an area that was quickly developing.

“In fact the entire area consists of an endangered veld type, being lowland fynbos, where conservationists also discovered the last wild population of the strawberry spiderhead. This critically endangered member of the iconic Proteacea family was discovered in 2013, with the last known specimens found on the reserve, says conservationist David Morris, the reserve supervisor who was delegated in December 2016 to formalise the park.

Since then the park, situated between Kerk Street and Saxdown Road, has been fenced off and a boom gate and temporary signage have been erected.

Speaking excitedly to TygerBurger from his office at Bracken Nature Reserve, from where the 53ha reserve will be administrated for the time being, Morris said their aim

The reserve is abundant with plant life, with some 155 plant species already having been registered.

“Every year around March, the reserve blooms with chandelier lilies and many other species. It is also home to a variety of bush birds, steenbok, the Cape fox as well as limbless skink, Cape sand snake, Cape cobra and the spotted eagle owl,” he said.

But the biggest drawcard, said Morris, is the amazing variety of raptor species found on the site.

“It has the most I have ever counted in any reserve,” he added.

“We even recorded a secretary bird here in 2014 and are keeping watch for more.”

In developing the reserve, Morris is assisted by field ranger Masande Falakhe and senior supervisor Mark Fisher, who – with the assistance of the Bracken Nature Reserve team – have been hard at work clearing alien vegetation, building footpaths and conducting night surveys.

As part of embracing spring festivities, the reserve is until the end of the month hosting free guided spring walks in the mornings between 09:00 and 12:00, and Morris encouraged the community to come and fall in love with this space.

“Come help me make it magical. A reserve only truly becomes a reserve when the community interacts with it. We need community champions to help us drive the project to develop and transform the reserve to its full potential,” he said.

At this stage, the future plans at the reserve include its own infrastructure and ablution facilities, as well as a formalised walking route and a round circle route for jogging.

WAT DIE HART VAN VOL IS

Die gesig van ’n alkoholis wat bly spook

Ek het vandeesweek in die gesig van alkoholisme gekyk. ’n Gesonde, hardwerkende, sogenaamd “ordentlike” man, maar vasgevang in die greep van drank.

Hier is dié geloof onder ouskoolmense dat jy nié ’n alkoholis is as jy nog ’n werk of vrou of huis het nie.

Min besef en verstaan dat jy kan funksioneer en steeds ’n positiewe rol in die samelewing vertolk terwyl jy hopeloos etanol-afhanklik is.

Só ook hierdie gerespekteerde man voor my, wat nie besef dat hy eintlik al klassifiseerbaar is nie.

Hoewel ek geen dokter is nie, is iemand wat élke dag van die week drink – hetsy ’n “slaapdop”, om “af te koel”, ’n sogenaamde “sundowner”, en, en, en ... – myns insiens al klaar so diep in die bottel dat omdraaikans maar gering is.

Wie betaal vir dié werkery?

Baie dankie, Jay-Dee, vir die mooi berig oor die nuwe sypaadjie in Soneike, Kuilsrivier (“Pavement pleasure”, 30/8).

Baie geluk ook aan die mense wat nou die nuwe sypaadjie kan gebruik.

Sypaadjies is inderdaad baie belangrik vir die veilige gebruik deur voetgangers in die verkeer, maar die gebruikers moet nie te vinnig opgewonde raak nie.

Twee jaar gelede het ons ’n pragtige sypaadjie met bome langs Langverwachtpad gekry (baie dankie).

Dit was ’n plesier om daar te stap, maar ’n jaar later is die sypaadjie al weer opgebreek omdat ’n ander afdeling daar stormwaterafvoerpype gebou het. Hulle het blykbaar eers agtergekom dit is nodig nadat die sypaadjie klaar gebou is. Daarna is die sypaadjie weer mooi herbou en geteer (op die koste van die stormwatermanne?).

Vanjaar het ’n ander afdeling weer agtergekom dat daar kabels onder die sypaadjie is wat dringend vervang moet word. Toe is die sypaadjie vir die tweede keer opgegrou en die teer verwyder. Ons wag nou nog op die herteer van die sypaadjie (op die koste van die kabelmanne?).

Dit lei tot die vraag: hoekom raadpleeg die sypaadjie-afdeling van die munisipaliteit nie die ander afdelings nie, sodat dieselfde werk nie herhaal hoef te word nie?

En dan die koste-aspek. Vir elke sypaadjie wat gebou, afgebreek, gebou, afgebreek en weer gebou word, kon seker ten minste een ander nuwe sypaadjie gebou word (teen R380 000 per sypaadjie).

If your meter is still running, you have a severe leakage of power on an appliance or a line to such appliance that is not protected by an earth leakage. This happens with old installations and breakdown of the cable insulation. Get a good electrician. He will do a proper installation test, and will find the fault quickly.

If the meter slows down when you isolate the power to the geyser, it is correct.

Switch the power on, and monitor the meter. The meter must slow down when the water reaches the set-point temperature. If it does not, there is a possibility of two

things: a water leak on the hotwater line, or a faulty element. A very small waterleak on the hot water line will cause the thermostat to remain switched on, attempting to reach the set temperature unsuccessfully.

To test this theory, close the water inlet to your geyser. The meter should slow down or come to a standstill.

Beoordelaars se negatiwiteit skok Die Tygerberg-eisteddfod vier vanjaar sy 70ste bestaansjaar.

Vir dekades lank verskaf dit nie net vermaak op talle terreine nie, maar dit is ook ’n wonderlike platform vir talentvolle jongmense om hierdie talente uit te bou.

As ’n ouer van kinders wat reeds etlike jare met die eisteddfod te doen het, het twee kategorieë vanjaar erg teleurgestel – die tweespraak en gedramatiseerde prosa.

Nee, ek is nie teleurgesteld in die kinders se optredes nie – hulle het hul kant gebring.

Dit was twee spesifieke beoordelaars wat werklik belaglike punte gegee het.

Om net ná die Julie-skoolvakansie op te tree, behels dat hierdie kinders ure en ure in die vakansie moes oefen, en ouers, sowel as drama-afrigters, kosbare tyd moes opoffer om almal slaggereed te kry.

Ek het ’n wye spektrum van kategorieë aanskou en nêrens het ek gevoel die kinders word erg te na gekom of baie onregverdig beoordeel nie, buiten bogenoemde kategorieë.

Kinders wat in die verlede uitstekend gevaar het, kon nou nie eens 90% of in sommige gevalle 80% behaal nie.

Die eisteddfod behoort beoordelaars met groot omsigtigheid te kies. Van hierdie kinders wil nooit weer in hierdie kategorieë deelneem nie. Dit is ’n groot jammerte, want in plaas daarvan dat hul drome vlerke gekry het, het ’n buitengewoon streng manlike en vroulike beoordelaar hul vlerke so te sê geknip.

En dis nie net ek wat so voel nie – die ouers was almal geskok en uiters teleurgesteld.

Ons praat hier van jong kinders wie se selfbeeld nog gevorm word. Asseblief, kies beoordelaars wat regverdig is en wat nie die kinders verneder en belaglike lae punte gee nie. Die eisteddfod se goeie naam is beslis hierdeur geknou.

Wie sal nou weer wil deelneem as jy nie net tyd en geld moet bestee nie, maar jy boonop jou swak punt aan die skool moet oordra en dan weet almal daarvan – maats, onderwysers en ouers. Dis mos dan veel beter om net nooit weer deel te neem nie!

The Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow is organising a benefit concert in their auditorium on Sunday 17 September at 16:30. This is Denver Swanepoel, helpdesk clerk at Karl Bremer Hospital’s (KBH) Emergency Centre, who recently brought joy to his facility and the Northern Tygerberg Substructure by winning a bronze award in the 2017 Western Cape Government Staff Service Excellence Awards.

The ceremony was held at Kelvin Grove in Newlands last month.

Swanepoel was chosen for the award by a panel of adjudicators selected by provincial top management.

Conference to go the distance T

he Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) will hold its first South African conference tomorrow and Friday, during the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon week.

Key stakeholders from around the world will participate in the conference, which will give African and South African roadrace organisers, local governments, municipalities and federations the opportunity to listen to and learn from experts in the field of road races and trail events. Creating economic appeal, sports tourism, events marketing and adherence to international standards will all be addressed by leaders in the field.

AIMS is a member-based organisation of more than 400 of the world’s leading distance races in over 100 countries and territories.

It endeavours to cultivate and promote distance running throughout the world, and works with the International Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF) on all topics relating to international road races, while also sharing knowledge and expertise within the association. Local conference delegates will be able to engage and network with organisations from around the world while sharing in the latest findings from the organisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, Africa’s first IAAF Gold Label marathon.

Janet Welham, race director of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, says: “There are many criteria to having a successful race, and this conference will cover key aspects of putting together a spectacular event, and showcase Africa as the top destination in which to compete.”

AIMS president Paco Borao will open the conference and will be joined by Aleck Skhosana, Athletics South Africa (ASA) president, Alessio Punzi, IAAF road-running manager, Anroux Marais, Western Cape Government minister of cultural affairs and sport, Dr Laurine Platzky, Western Cape Government deputy director, and many other highly esteemed presenters.

The conference will provide delegates with the opportunity to witness first-hand how the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has become an iconic city marathon by enabling them to be a part of all planned activities over the course of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon week and weekend.

ygerberg-klub kon nie vir ’n beter begin gevra het nie toe hy Sondag in die eerste reeks wedstryde in die nasionale Goue Beker-rugbykompetisie vir Progress van Uitenhage met 54-27 geklop het.

Die Westelike Provinsie het twee verteenwoordigers in hierdie kompetisie vir die voorste nie-universitêre klubspanne in die land.

Valsbaai het Saterdag ewe goed afgeskop in sy eerste kragmeting deur Roses United van Wellington, die topspan in die Boland, met 43-19 te klop.

Tygerberg se wedstryd op Floridapark teen die voorste span van die Oostelike Provinsie het lewendige hardloopspel gelewer en altesame 11 drieë is gedruk, waarvan 6 deur die tuisspan wie se stelskopwerk ook goed in die kol was.

Tygerberg speel die komende naweek in sy tweede wedstryd in George teen (ook genaamd) Progress, die topspan van die Suidwestelike Distrikte.

Wat die WP se Presidentbeker-klubkompetisie betref, wil dit lyk of die 14 Tygerbergse spanne in die Superliga hierdie seisoen weinig trofeë in die verskillende kompetisies en afdelings beskore sal wees. Terwyl die Maties en Hamiltons sake in die eindstryd vir die spanne in die Superliga sal uitspook, is Unie-Milnerton die enigste oorblywende span in die A-afdeling se troosgroep wat nog ’n kans op ’n trofee het. Unimil het die afgelope naweek vir Brackenfell met 25-20 uitgeskakel en kom nou in die eindstryd teen die Victoriane te staan.

In die B-afdeling van die Superliga het al die Tygerbergse spanne ná die afgelope naweek se uitklopwedstryde reeds die trekpas gekry.

Kraaifontein is op verrassende wyse met 34-35 deur Daljosafat se Young Peoples getroef, terwyl Kraaifontein se buurklub, Hands & Heart, moedig gespook het teen die gunsteling, Rangers, maar hy moes met 31-45 die stryd gewonne gee. In afdeling C is Scottsdene darem nog in die wedloop nadat hy All Saints met 51-12 laat les opsê het.
