OUR HERO!: FIREMAN RESCUES KITTEN FROM INFERNO AT BLACKHEATH WAREHOUSE
Fireman saves ‘Fluffy’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzie
A
n adorable little kitten miraculously survived the inferno that broke out behind a warehouse in Blackheath Industria on Thursday evening. Columns of black smoke could be seen as far away as Bellville as a mountain of recyclable material caught fire. The City’s fire services were on the scene by 16:00 to fight the fire that raged on until the following morning. Amid the chaos on Friday morning, TygerBurger journalist Ntahbiseng Madumo spotted a brave but exhausted fireman walking out from “ground zero” with a bedraggled little fluffball in his arms. “The little kitten, be it a he or a she, was apparently found underneath the burning heaps of rubble, according to the fireman,” says Madumo, who stole a picture. “The kitten looked to be about eight weeks old and seemed uninjured, apart from being soaking wet and slightly bewildered,” she says. The little feline was then rushed off to be taken care of. By Friday afternoon the fire was still smouldering and firemen had to open up the smouldering rubble and use foam to douse the fire. Although not confirmed, it is suspected that the fire had been started by a match or a cigarette lit by one of the informal rubble collectors who frequent the yard. An employee who works at one of the buildings on the property told our reporter that the rubble had been there for years, with its owner having been missing for some time. It is understood that the owner had been hiring the factory space to run his recycling business, but had left the rubble behind when vacating the space. TygerBurger contacted the City to enquire about the welfare of the kitten and its whereabouts, as well as the identity of the heroic fireman who had saved its life, but received no feedback by the time of going to print.
