‘Killing Karoline’ tells tragic tale Journalist and radio presenter, Sara­Jayne King, launched her book “Killing Karoline” at Suzie’s Coffee Shop in Kuils River on Saturday 18 November. The book, dealing with issues relating to identity, race, adoption, mental health and addiction, tells the life story of Sara­Jayne, born Karoline King in 1980 in Johannesburg as the result of an affair between a white British woman and a black South African man – illegal under apartheid’s Immorality Act. Her story reveals the shocking lie created to cover up the forbidden relationship, and the hurried overseas adoption of the illegiti­ mate baby. “Killing Karoline” follows the journey of the baby girl raised in a leafy, middle­class corner of the south of England by a white couple. It takes the reader through her formative years, a difficult adolescence and into adulthood, as Sara­Jayne (Karoline) seeks to discover who she is and where she came from.

he Miss Zevenwacht Mall pageant has come under scrutiny after allegations that the pageant was rigged.

The event, which took place on Saturday 4 November, saw the 12 finalists – who were selected by means of prejudging – compete for the coveted title of Miss Zevenwacht Mall. Spectator Carol de Klerk says that what was supposed to be a pageant was more of a modelling show. “Everything was han-

dled very unprofessionally by mall management, with the presenter even calling out the wrong name when announcing the winner,” says De Klerk.

She also alleges that the winner of the pageant was not chosen legitimately by the tallying of the points awarded by the judges, but rather by means of favouritism on the part of mall management.

Tamryn Whitton, spokesperson for Zevenwacht Mall vehemently denies this. “The centre manager, marketing manager and external events coordinator played no role in

Whitton explains that mall management asked the judges to gather in a separate room, as “it is standard practice that the judges get together before the announcement of the winners in order to look at the finalists’ photographs and confirm that the scores match the numbers, as judges only worked on numbers and not names.”

She also says that the gathering of judges in a separate space creates some anticipation and excitement prior to the announcement.

The source, much like De Klerk, alleges that the winner was not selected by the tallying of the judges’ scorecards, but by the event organisers and mall management.

“There is no reason at all why the mall would want to advance or prefer any of our participants, as we have no involvement

with them at all, before or after the competition,” says Whitton.

She explains that the final scorer, together with the event coordinator, presented the numbers to the judges. “This was done on the laptop and the sheets were formatted so that automatic calculations were done and the figures presented timeously.”

“I was hoping things would be different this year,” says the source who was also involved in the pageant last year, and who alleges that centre management also interfered with the outcome of the previous pageant.

With regard to centre management interfering in the final outcome, Whitton says such allegations are false and disappointing. “Our team is made up of professionals employed by companies with a national

footprint. Our interest lies with the community and offering them an enjoyable shopping experience. The competition terms and conditions also determine that no relatives, family, friends or colleagues are allowed to enter and we abide by and respect this rule.

By hosting Miss Zevenwacht Mall we intend to show our love and appreciation to the community and offer a platform for the young participants to be identified and possibly grow their modelling careers,” says Whitton.

“It is important that there be transparency in the judging of pageants, and I do not believe that this was the instance with Miss Zevenwacht 2017,” says the anonymous source.

The Highbury community in Kuils River has been asking this for years, and now accuse the DA-led government of the Western Cape of turning its back on the coloured community in this area.

According to them there was a blatant failure to engage in public meetings with the community over a new housing development in the heart of Highbury.

This mixed housing development, consisting of some 500 RDP, GAP and low-bonded housing, is set to be developed adjacent to Highbury.

“Our opinion simply does not matter. Our rights as residents and property owners have been blatantly disregarded,” says Edmund du Plooy, chairperson of the Highbury Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (HRRA).

According to him, earthworks at the Highbury Park phase 3 housing development in Kuils River have already started, despite an ongoing dispute of several years between the HRRA and local authorities, in a bid to get answers.

Du Plooy says they approached the Department of Human Settlements in May 2016 for answers and since then have not received any written feedback.

Construction on R300 to only be completed in 2018 JAY­DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

C

ommuters travelling along the R300 in the direction of Kuils River will have to wait until the end of 2018 before they can expect any relief to the irregular bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions.

Regional manager of the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) Western Region, Kobus van der Walt, confirms that there are currently two contracts in progress on the R300 and a third which will commence shortly.

One of the projects involves the resurfacing of the R300 between the N1 and N2. According to Van der Walt, this work is largely being done at night and is specifically planned to take place during off-peak hours, from 20:00 to 05:00.

However, some portions of the work are being undertaken during the day, most notably the pre-marking (marking out the positions of the road markings and lines dividing the road surface into lanes and shoulders) and the final road marking.

Van der Walt states that lane closures are required for this work and that the road marking work is taking place periodically.

“The contract is expected to be completed towards the middle of 2018.”

With regard to the second contract, the overpass bridge over the R300 is currently being widened to become the new Cilmore Road Bridge (between Bottelary Road and Old Paarl Road). “This work is being undertaken by private developers (VDMV/ Redefine Properties) as part of the commercial

development in the adjacent areas. In order to widen the bridge it is necessary to undertake work within the R300 road reserve,” says Van der Walt.

He confirms that the work is mostly foundation work, as well as the construction of the piers to support the bridge deck.

“In order for the contractor to work in the median and close to the outer shoulders, it is necessary to narrow the road width in order to put concrete barriers in place to provide protection to the workers and the temporary works, which is achieved by closing the fast lanes,” he explains.

He says the closing of lanes starts quite a distance before the work site in an effort to ensure that the traffic converges well in advance of the work site to allow for freeflowing traffic. “The lane closures are in place 24 hours per day, but the construction work itself takes place within normal working hours. It is expected that the substructure work will be completed by 15 December, which would allow for the opening of the R300 to full-width traffic,” says Van der Walt. This contract is expected to be completed towards the middle of 2018.

Van der Walt confirms that a third contract is set to commence shortly at the R300/ Strand Road interchange. “This contract is being implemented by the City of Cape Town and comprises the widening of the R300 off-ramp in the northbound direction and the provision of an additional lane on Strand Road between the R300 and College Road,” explains Van der Walt. This project is expected to be completed towards the end of 2018.

Many of the entertainers offered their services free of charge in support of raising the required funds for the new school hall.

The carnival also featured a dance competition, a DJ competition, a Miss Irista Carnival competition and an Irista’s Got Talent competition. Comedian Dalin Olivier was also in attendance to entertain the crowds.

Members of the local police were also given the opportunity to address the crowd.

Van Schalkwyk expressed her appreciation to all involved in the carnival, as well as all local businesses and performers who donated their time as well as various items.

rista Primary School hosted its 35th birthday carnival on the school sports grounds in Sarepta, Kuils River, earlier this month.

The carnival was hosted by the school as a means of raising funds for a new R8 million school hall, and included performances by local Kuils River talent, as well as artists from around the country.

The carnival was one of the initiatives undertaken by the school to raise the necessary funds for a much-needed school hall, which will be used for regular programmes and workshops. This means the school will no longer have make use of other venues or wait for another local hall to be made available.

According to an educator at the school, Karen van Schalkwyk, the school is still in need of more businesses and sponsors to invest.

“Toe ek nou my laaste pakkie op Dinsdag 14 November gaan afhaal, moet ek hoor dat ek nou R24,80 as hanteringsfooi moet betaal.

“Die poskantoor het nou besluit om geld te begin vra vir die hantering van die pakkies, aangesien dit nou so groot geraak het,” sê hy.

Volgens hom het een van die poskantoor se werknemers so vier maande gelede aan hom gemeld dat hulle duisende van die pakkies ontvang – tot sowat 100 per dag.

“Jy moet ook self jou pakkies op die lys van pakkies soek, en ek moes laas deur meer as 50 bladsye vol pakkies gaan om my pakkie op te spoor,” vertel hy.

Dit word volgens inligting gedoen om klante te help indien hulle nog nie hul afleweringsadvies (of strokie) vir hul pakkie

ontvang het nie.

Hy is veral beswaard daaroor dat niemand vooraf oor die hanteringsfooi ingelig is nie.

“Ek sit nou met seker tien pakkies waarvoor ek amper niks betaal het nie, en gaan geen ander uitweg hê as om nóg te moet betaal nét om dit te ontvang nie.

“Ek het dit dan juis bestel oor dit so goedkoop is. Ek het mos klaar vir die verskeping betaal. Ek voel hulle hou ons pakkies hostage,” sê hy.

“Dis mos waarvoor die poskantoor daar is – sodat ons pakkies kan ontvang. Ek kan nie glo dat hulle wegkom daarmee dat hulle ekstra geld vra net om hul werk te doen nie” sê hy. “’n Mens kan dit vergelyk met iets soos dat die polisie jou nou R24,80 vra om uit te kom as jy ’n inbraak rapporteer, want hulle het

te min polisiemanne … dis mos absurd!”

Dié hanteringsfooi is egter niks nuuts nie.

Martie Gilchrist, woordvoerder van die SA Poskantoor, het by navraag gesê die hanteringsfooi op oorsese pakkies is al in vorige jare gehef.

“Dit dek die koste van die sortering, prosessering, berekening van die invoerbelasting en vervoer van die pakkies.

“Poskantoorverbruikers aanvaar oor die algemeen die hanteringsfooi. Vandat mense wish.com ontdek het, word ons oorval met pakkies van oorsee!

“Dit het van begin vanjaar met 400% toegeneem en ons moes ons prosesse by ons internasionale possorteringsentrum aanpas om dit te hanteer.”

Fillis family gets the community singing JAY­DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

W

hen meeting eight-year-old Sayde Fillis from Kalkfontein, it is easy to assume that he is withdrawn and shy. However, when he sings, his crystal clear voice permeates the room and one quickly realises that this little boy not only loves to sing, but is very good at it too.

Sayde, a learner at Irista Primary School, started singing at the age of four. “He started singing in church with the Sunday School where he was able to build on his confidence,” explains his father, Andrew Fillis.

His confidence has placed him in good stead, as he already performed for the public at the Irista Primary School Carnival on Saturday 4 November. “It was wonderful watch-

ing him perform. As a parent you are always excited to see your child on stage,” says Fillis.

Sayde and his father share a love of music, with Fillis having written, produced and recorded his son’s first single called “Drowning”.

Fillis says his main goal is to ensure that Sayde gets as much exposure as possible.

“We want to someday enter him into SA’s Got Talent in the hopes that someone will recognise him and afford him an opportunity or breakthrough,” says Fillis.

When asked what his favourite genre of music is, Sayde tells TygerBurger – to the amusement of both his parents – that it is most certainly rap.

Fillis says he is mentoring Sayde, but that there is no pressure for his son to choose mu-

sic as a career. “I want him to do what makes him happy. I will always support him.”

He says that when preparing for a performance, Sayde goes into a room by himself and then learns the song in that way. “I will then listen and advise him on what needs to be improved.”

Apart from his singing, Sayde’s parents say he is doing exceptionally well at school.

“My favourite subject is maths,” says Sayde.

Fillis says the community has been very supportive of Sayde’s dream and that the neighbours often play his single.

“His little sister Tameron (4) also loves to sing, but she only sings his song,” laughs Fillis.

Sayde is set to perform his single “Drowning” at the Western Cape Sport School Carnival on Saturday 25 November.

A tiny baby turns into a huge miracle

Upon seeing my newborn baby for the first time, most other people reacted with shock and then sympathy. My baby was born at 30 weeks, weighing only 1kg.

If you’re unfamiliar with the world of babies ... that’s tiny! A woman carries a baby to full term, which is 40 weeks (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter). A child is considered “premature” when it is born before 37 weeks. Many mothers would have a minor heart attack if their baby was born weighing less than 2.5kg.

My own reaction upon seeing my daughter was an overwhelming feeling of confusion and anxiety.

In the case of my daughter’s birth there were no movie-like moments of me pushing my baby out while yelling at my husband. The grandparents weren’t huddled outside excitedly waiting for news. I wasn’t patting away sweat while looking lovingly at my bundle of joy.

Instead I woke up in ICU and was told my baby had been born the previous evening. She was We couldn’t alive for more than 10 hours before I stroke our girl. saw her for the time.

At 28 weeks we travelled dings. to South Africa for a last hurrah before our daughter was meant to make her appearance in London. But life had other plans. One morning I woke up feeling terrible. And three days later she was born. Turns out I was suffering from a condition called pre-eclampsia, which is high blood pressure induced by pregnancy. Things escalated quite quickly and by day three my pre-eclampsia had turned into eclampsia when I suffered a seizure in hospital. I’m told this quite rare in private health care. Lucky me.

Having a premature baby meant we were introduced the world of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or “Nico”).

In a way it felt a bit like a sterile spaceship. A lot of machines and people in uniforms, with everyone sterilising their hands before entering and leaving.

Nobody except parents allowed inside.

We couldn’t stroke our girl. She was born so prematurely she had no nerve endings. Like ET, we could only point and touch her gently. She had jaundice almost immediately and developed a cold quite quickly (which in a baby that size becomes a catastrophe). As a baby will only be discharged from NICU upon reaching a certain weight and age, we lived in terms of millilitres and grams.

“She drank 20ml today and picked up 15g!” we exclaimed excitedly to our confused friends.

But with the challenges there were joys. NICU was a soft landing for the trauma. Here my confused mind could slowly come to grips with having a child.

The nurses were patient with our absolute inexperience. We went home knowing somebody was looking out for her constantly. The staff were our cheerleaders and our baby’s biggest fans. Firm kindness was the motto of my child’s first home. Here we were taught to bathe her, feed her, and get to grips with her emaciated body and the unique challenges of caring for a baby of that size.

My daughter would spend 47 days in NICU. She was discharged before her actual due date (we joked about her being “minus five days old”).

Today, a few days after “World Prematurity Day”, she is a healthy 15 months and the light of our lives. One day I’ll tell her about the miracle of her being alive.

I’ll speak of her fighting spirit and I’ll be sure to tell her of the nurses and staff that got her to where she is today. – Nielen de Klerk

Or have they all derailed to such a degree that they have lost the plot – too busy feathering their own nest, following in the footsteps of the ruling party?

No longer kings of our own castles It was good to read your report on house robberies (“‘Stay calm’ advises house robbery victim”, 08/11).

Why are so many robberies repeated without the perpetrators ever being caught?

If you can give a description of the robber, inevitably no identikit photo file exists with the police.

Why are robberies in the same complex – five in three years – not solved?

If you phone the police when a robber enters your bedroom, how can they arrive only 20 to 30 minutes after you phoned them urgently?

(No) wonder nobody gets caught!

Well, I am a nearly 80 years old and European; I have lived in this country for 50 years and have always supported this country.

As co-founder of the world’s biggest chemical company in the world, I worked in Cape Town for six years before being called back to Germany.

I then returned to make South Africa my permanent home. When I speak to other people who have also been robbed in their “castle”, the sentiment is often: “We appreciate that we are still alive and unharmed!”

This is definitely the wrong attitude in a civilised country.

Perhaps all those people should refuse to pay tax, after having lost valuable things.

This country’s security apparatus for its citizens is hardly in existence. Also, the number of protests and demonstrations with no proper basis are taking away our police force to keep order, and security is left for “John Citizen”.

Traffic chaos in Church Street Wonderful to read about all new developments in and around Durbanville (“Campus on the cards”, 15/11).

I also read about an extensive traffic impact study that was done. Did this study also look at the massive increase in traffic using the portion of Church Street between the police station and De Villiers Avenue?

From trucks carrying bricks to cement mixers, sand transport trucks, tankers transporting liquids and farmers transporting feed – all now use this stretch of road to bypass Wellington Road. This portion of Church Street is used by all vehicles and trucks to move from one side of Durbanville to the other. Everyone wanting to drive from Race Course Road to Klipheuwel Road (and vice versa) also uses this portion of Church Street.

This road is far too narrow for this two-way traffic, plus there are various residential complexes where the residents must enter or exit from Church Street. The stop street at intersection of Church and Oxford streets is an absolute nightmare. Another way through or past Durbanville town centre has to be found for all this heavy traffic.

Senior citizens pampered

L

ocal salon Felicite Beauty paid a visit to the AGS Old Age Home in Kuils River in October.

The three employees, Tezne Jensel, Rozanne Kgatlane and Ambrey Williams treated the seniors to manicures and pedicures.

“We even cut and polished the nails of the men in the home,” says salon owner Jensel.

She says that she and her employees felt very privileged to be able to give of their time to the seniors.

“It was a very overwhelming and rewarding experience,” says Jensel. “This was a day which we chose to serve our local senior citizens.”

Jensel relays that the elderly were extremely grateful and that it was a day filled with laughter.

“We truly enjoyed the day and we can only hope that the seniors enjoyed it as much as we did.”

Jensel expresses her gratitude to the AGS Old Age Home for allowing them to give back and says that this is an initiative with which they hope to continue.

AGS matron Maxie Herbst expressed her gratitude to the women from Felicite Beauty by saying, “We are the ones who need to thank Tezne and her angels for making our women feels like ladies again.”

“When we treat the seniors it not only benefits them but it inspires us as well,” explains Jensel.

alling all “superheroes” … it’s almost time for this year’s Twilight Run Entries are now open for the 35th Community Chest Twilight Run on Tuesday 5 December. Cape Town’s streets will once again come alive in a flurry of excitement and colour, as around 8 000 noble participants and spectators don the outfits of their favourite superhero, animal or mythical creature to take part in a 5km walk/run for charity. As always, it will be interesting to see how the participants’ costumes reflect the causes they represent, whether HIV/ Aids, violence against women and children, or human rights.

Accomplishing this feat of endurance for a good cause is a heroic undertaking that should be done in suitable attire, and the Community Chest invites participants to

dress according to this year’s theme: “Be the superhero in your community”. All proceeds from the event will be donated to charities operating in the Community Chest’s key focus areas, including education, health, income generation and community development.

The iconic run/walk weaves along Long, Adderley and Strand streets, through the Company’s Garden, to finish at the historic Grand Parade.

Well-known local acts will provide the festive vibes at the finish line and there will also be refreshments along the route and food vendors at the festival grounds.

Shéri se boek sal almal inspireer AVRIL FILLIES

aar boek, Shéri - nes ek is, gaan nie net oor Downsindroom nie, maar oor ’n pad van leer en verander en hard werk om iets te bereik.

Dít is hoe Sheri Brynard (35) tydens haar boekbekendstelling by die Alta du Toit-nasorgsentrum in Boston gesê het.

Sy is die enigste persoon ter wêreld met Downsindroom wat ’n onderwysdiploma in kleutersorg het, en geen aanpassings is tydens haar opleiding vir haar gemaak nie “Die boek gaan ook nie daaroor om nie vir jouself jammer te kry nie. Dit gaan daaroor dat mens nooit moed moet opgee nie. Dit gaan oor drome wat elkeen moet hê, al moet jy harder as ander werk en meer bid om die drome waar te maak,” het sy gesê.

“Ek woon my lewe lank in Bloemfontein en wonderlike dinge het al met my gebeur sedert ek die internasionale ambassadeur vir alle mense met Downsindroom geword het. Eintlik is ek net ’n doodgewone mens met ’n ekstra chromosoom en dit maak my bietjie stadiger. Dis al wat ek ken en eintlik is ek heeltemal oukei om ek te wees.

“Ek kla net soms wanneer my ma so vinnig loop dat dit lyk asof sy vir my wegloop.

“Ek kan ook nie lank staan nie, sukkel met skoene en is maar lomp. Die instrukteurs by die gimnasium probeer my hiermee help.

Eintlik vat ek langer met alles wat ek doen, maar ons almal het mos maar dinge wat ons anders wil hê in ons lewens,” het sy gesê.

Dit is vir haar nog ongelooflik om haar eie boek in boekwinkels uitgestal te sien.

“Wanneer mense my boek koop, voel dit net so onwerklik en kan ek dit nie glo nie.

In my boek wou ek ook aan mense verduidelik hoe my pad geloop het, omdat die Here my baie seën. Ek wou my eie storie vertel, want mense praat so maklik vir ander en ek wou oor myself skryf,” het Shéri gesê.

Sy word gereeld gevra waaroor die boek gaan en wat sy nou eintlik daarmee wil bereik.

“Ek verduidelik dit graag sodat mense kan verstaan. Dis nie ’n boek net vir mense met Downsindroom nie. Dis ’n boek wat handel oor die lewe binne ’n dop van andersheid.

Dis ’n boek van vasbyt, hard werk en die verwerking van die uitdagings van ’n lewe waar

mens nie regtig inpas nie, tot die aanvaarding en beste maak van j ou omstandighede.

“Dis ’n positiewe boek, sonder issues en hangups. Dis ’n boek van verlies en soms seer, maar met die sterk boodskap van hoop, indien jy regtig die Here se genade en liefde in jou lewe toelaat. Met die boek omarm ons andersheid en probeer hoop gee vir ander wat gemarginaliseer voel,” het sy gesê.

Sy wil ook via hierdie artikel die wanpersepsie regstel dat sy aan Downsindroom ly.

“Ek het ’n ekstra chromosoom en hét Downsindroom. Dis nie ’n siekte nie en mense met Downsindroom ly nie meer soos in die verlede toe hulle weggesteek of in ’n inrigting geplaas is nie. Dis net wanneer aborsies gedoen word, dat hulle ly,” het sy gesê.

Volgens haar ma, Susette, was en is haar lewe anders.

“Shéri is en sal altyd stadiger wees, al verstom sy my daagliks. Haar onderwys- en werkloopbaan was vol struikelblokke, waarvan die lesers in die boek kan lees. Maar die lag was baie, veel meer as die hartseer,” het sy gesê.

“Haar suksesse was nie gemeet aan ander se sukses nie en ook nie aan wat sy nie kan doen nie, maar wat sy wel kan doen. Sy groei nog elke dag en in haar beroepslewe kry sy stadigaan meer verantwoordelikhede,” het Susette gesê.

Shéri het ’n spesiale vriend, Gustav Taljaard, wat vier ure uit Bloemfontein bly en boer.

“Hulle is al 20 jaar spesiale vriende, maar omdat nie een van die twee hul lewens wil los nie, bly die een nie by die ander nie. Hulle kan ook nie vir mekaar sorg nie en hulle het nie seksuele gevoelens vir mekaar nie; dus is trou nie ter sprake nie.

“Beide geniet die verhouding soos dit is.

Shéri se behoefte is om normaal te wees en dan te trou, soos haar sussies gedoen het. Sy weet egter dit kan nie gebeur nie en wanneer sy haar stories op televisie kyk, is Gustav nie gewild as hy haar bel nie,” vertel Susette laggend.

Haar boodskap by bekendstellings van haar boek is dat jy net die beste jy kan wees, sonder om jou met ander te vergelyk.

“Shéri is pragtig en vol liefde, soos vele ander kinders ook. Hulle pas nie almal in dieselfde boksie nie en moet nie met mekaar vergelyk word nie. Hulle verskil nes normale kinders van mekaar verskil, tog is daar baie normale en Downsindroomkinders wat liefdevol en dierbaar is.

“Dis verseker nie spesiale mammas wat sulke kinders kry nie. Enige mamma wat ’n kindjie grootmaak met liefde en ondersteuning, is spesiaal, so ook mammas met kinders met Downsindroom.

“Ek was maar kwaai met haar en het duidelike grense gestel. Dit het Shéri gehelp om binne die grense van dissipline te funksioneer,” het Susette gesê.

Drama is Shéri se heel lekkerste stokperdjie.

“Sy het al twee keer in Binnelanders op televisie verskyn en ook in twee verskillende verhoogproduksies op die Vrystaat-Kunstefees gespeel. Die kunstefees is soortgelyk aan die KKNK. Sy het al meer as 500 keer nasionaal en internasionaal as gasspreker opgetree. Haar boodskap is ’n boodskap van hoop, nes haar boek,” het haar ma gesê. Volgens die mede-skrywer, Colleen Naudé, kry hulle baie goeie terugvoering oor die boek.

Op ’n vraag watter mense ’n invloed op haar lewe gehad het, het Susette geantwoord dat daar ontsettend baie mense is wat werktuie in die hand van die Here is.

Jason the toast of SA’s DD2 team

D

urbanville karting star Jason Coetzee may have headed to the Rotax World Karting final in Portugal at the back a fortnight ago, but the 15-year-old from Hoërskool DF Malan came home as the toast of the team’s DD2 field after delivering a stunning performance in only his second race in that premier Rotax class.

Coetzee earned a DD2 gearbox kart place in the South African team by taking the non-gearbox Senior Max seat at the Zwartkops African Open earlier this year, which was a bit of a curveball as Jason had not even driven a gearbox kart at the time.

That did not stop the young man from taking the bull by the horns as he arrived in Portugal as the youngest and least experienced DD2 driver on the grid, racing against national champions from Jason Coetzee around the world.

Coetzee did not disappoint, emerging among the cream of the SA DD2 crop as he went further into the competition than any of his teammates, finishing 14th out of 36 drivers in the pre-final to miss the final cut by all of five points. “That was so good!” a

delighted Jason admits. “What a great experience – it’s just a pity that everything came together a bit too late.

“I had never driven a gearbox kart before October, so I had to adapt to racing with gears and we also had to quickly learn about the Birel chassis we all drove in Portugal and which I raced for the first time, but I am very happy with my 14th place in that prefinal, especially considering that I was the youngest driver in the class in only my second race in a DD2 kart.

“Of course I would have preferred to have made it into the final, but now I have so much more experience and confidence to carry into next year’s racing. I really want that ticket (15) next year!

“I need to thank my team – Dennis from CRG Holland , my mechanic Joost. and my mentor Umpie – for keeping me focused.

“Most of all I want to thank my mom and dad for their investment in my sport to allow me to me reach for my dream,” he says.

Durbanville Cricket Club clinches T20 title Durbanville Cricket Club’s Senior First XI were recently crowned the local Western Province Cricket Association’s Premier League Amateur T20 champions.

The team successfully defended their title by beating both the Cape Town Cricket Club and the University of the Western Cape in the semi-final and final respectively.

On Sunday 12 November, the team won the Community Cup play-off matches, beating both Mossel Bay Cricket Club (South-western Districts champions) and Vredenburg-Saldanha Cricket Club (Boland champions) by six and four wickets respectively, thereby extending their unbeaten run of nine consecutive and competitive T20 match wins this season. The team will participate in the national Momentum Community Cup tournament in Pretoria from 8 to 10 December.

Hy het die prestasie in die 50cc-PRO-klas behaal en het ook die FIM Africa Motocross, of African Nations, wat in Botswana gehou is, vir die tweede agtereenvolgende keer gewen en so sy titel suksesvol verdedig.

“Vanjaar was nog meer spesiaal as in 2016, omdat ek my doel bereik het om al my renne

te wen, insluitend die African Champs,” het hy gesê.

“Ek oefen baie hard en om die jaar so af te sluit, maak my net nog meer opgewonde vir die 2018-seisoen. Ek sien baie uit na volgende jaar aangesien ek opskuif na die 65ccklas, waar ek my beste gaan gee om nog titels te wen,” vertel Neil.

Dit het alles begin toe sy pa, Werner, vir Neil reeds op 3-jarige ouderdom sy eerste fiets gekoop het en hy by Zone 7 aan sy natuurlike talent begin skaaf het.

Danksy Neil se puik prestasies vanjaar het Husqvarna, die internasionale motorfietsvervaardiger, vir hom ’n junior kontrak aangebied.

ehan van Deventer, of “Klein Rafa” soos hy bekend staan, is onlangs uitgenooi om in Maart volgende jaar vir twee weke by die Barcelona-tennisakademie in Spanje te oefen.

Dehan (7), ’n graad 2-leerder by die Onafhanklike Skool Curro in Durbanville en lid van die Heat-tennisakademie, het sy bynaam gekry omdat sy spel aan dié van sy held, Rafael Nadal, herinner.

Raphael Maurer, direkteur van die Barcelona-tennisakademie, het Dehan op sosiale media ontdek en so het Dehan sy plek by die akademie verseker.

Op 2-jarige ouderdom was sy talent al sigbaar toe hy “swingball” gespeel het.

Gevra oor hoe dit voel om op so ’n jong ouderdom reeds oorsee te speel, sê Dehan: “Ek dink nie juis aan hoe oud ek is nie. Ek dink net daaraan dat daar ’n speler aan die ander kant is, wat ek wil wen. Europa het van die beste akademies in die wêreld. Om dus uitgenooi te word om in Barcelona te gaan oefen, is baie spesiaal vir my”.

Elizma Slabbert van die Heat-tennisakademie doen ongelooflike werk met Dehan, waar hy klasse by Curro en Evertsdal-tennisklub ontvang.

Sy program is vol, maar hy geniet elke oomblik daarvan. Een keer ’n week het Dehan ’n private les by Elizma, een keer ’n week ’n groepsoefening saam met ander spelers, en die res van die week handhaaf hy ’n balans tussen wedstryde, fiksheid en balmasjien-oefening.

“Ons praat baie oor tennis en die emosionele kant van die spel. Dehan het ’n toege-

wydheid tot die sport wat ver bo sy ouderdom strek. Hy bestudeer die spel, ontleed dit, luister na advies en pas dit toe,” vertel sy pa, Hendrik.

Dit is duidelik dat Dehan die spel verstaan en dat dit sy passie in die lewe is.

“Ek wil graag eendag ’n professionele tennisspeler word. My droom is om in die grootste toernooie in die wêreld te speel.

“En hoewel ek bitter graag Grand Slams sal wil wen, is die Franse Ope die een wat ek die graagste sal wil wen. Geen Suid-Afrikaner kon dit nog in die enkelspel vermag nie. Ek sou ook graag vir Suid-Afrika se Davisbekerspan wil speel wanneer ek ouer is,” verwoord Dehan sy drome.

Maar vir eers hou Dehan sy oog op die bal en fokus op spesifieke doelwitte in die nabye toekoms.

Hy wil voortbou op sy volgehoue goeie vertonings in die SA tennistoernooie. Hy wil volgende jaar ook minstens in twee van die sewe Ten-Pro-Global-toernooie speel.

In 2019 sal hy graag in die Smrikva Bowl wil meeding, wat een van die mees gesogte o.10-toernooie in die wêreld is. Hy het ook die Dubrovnik Bowl in 2020 in sy visier. Beide die toernooie word in Kroasië gehou.

Tot dusver is Dehan trots oor sy insluiting in die Wes-Kaapse o.10-span, wat tradisioneel ’n baie sterk span is met puik spelers.

Die reis- en verblyfkostes is duur en Dehan beskik nie oor die nodige finansiële bystand om hom in Barcelona te kry nie. Indien daar ondernemings of persone is wat op kort- of selfs langtermyn Dehan sou wou borg, kan sy pa, Hendrik, by 076 401 5312 gekontak word.

Die onoorwonne Durbanville is halfpad deur die jongste reeks Premierliga-krieketwedstryde in die WP goed geplaas vir nog ’n sege, terwyl Tygerberg-klub die afgelope naweek die beste vertoon het in die eerste liga.

Durbanville (245/8 gesl.) het ’n eerstebeurt-voorsprong van 77 lopies teen Milnerton en sal sy tweede kolfbeurt op 33/0 hervat. Kuda Samunderu (61) het met behulp van Leon le Roux (37*) en ander spanmaats die Durbies goed laat wegspring.

Luke Philander (5/62) en Junaid Dawood (4/51) het albei goed geboul vir UWK.
