Cisco comes under fire NOLUVU LUDIDI

R

esidents of Kuils River have been distressed since mid-October by the reopening of an iron and steel factory that operates 24/7 in Fabriek Street.

This factory, DHT Holding Africa, trading as Cisco, produces steel billets, rebars and light-profile products.

The company was established during the 1960s and operated until 2010.

Residents in nearby areas such as Vredelust, Jagtershof, Stellendale, St Dumas and Highbury are complaining about daily air

and noise pollution, and lodged official complaints with the City of Cape Town’s health inspectors in November.

“The smell is unbearable and potentially toxic to residents within the area,” says one resident who does not want to be named.

Many other community members are experiencing the same problem.

Residents say that when they bought property in the area, they were told the factory would not be in operation again and that no plans were in the pipeline to recommission the factory.

In 2015, however, residents were informed

“I avoid opening windows as the smell just lingers around all day and it makes my family cough and choke,” says another resident, who also does not want to be named.

Residents are concerned and confused about why Cisco has been recommissioned to operate in such close proximity to a residential area.

Cisco told TygerBurger they are committed to operating in accordance with the conditions and requirements of the Provisional Atmospheric Emission Licence (PAEL).

Residents have requested that this pollution be addressed and that the factory starts operating at regular hours.

A new kidney, a new lease on life A

teacher from Mthatha, a kidney, Tygerberg Hospital, 40 years ago and a South African record.

These single phrases describe the life of 54-year-old Vukile Genu, thus far the longest living kidney transplant recipient to have received a new lease on life at Tygerberg Hospital – four decades ago.

When he was still a child on daily dialysis years ago, Genu anchored himself into the hearts of medical staff, rapidly becoming a favourite patient at the Kidney Unit, the hospital says in a statement.

“Every Christmas he requested a different present from the staff – which he would always end up getting, especially after resorting to shedding some crocodile tears,” the statement reads.

“At the age of 14, he indicated to staff that he no longer wanted presents – he wanted a kidney instead.”

It was on 2 December 1977 that he received that sought-after early Christmas present – a cadaver kidney – which still works per-

The youngster was admitted to Karl Bremer Hospital’s Renal Unit in 1974 when he

was 11, with severe high blood pressure. It was difficult to control and Genu ended up with a bilateral nephrectomy, which doctors hoped would control this, the statement reads.

When the Renal Unit moved over to the new Tygerberg Hospital in 1975, Genu moved with it and there received vascular surgery because of blood vessel problems and haemodialysis. This meant the young boy practically lived at the hospital and received schooling there over the next three years, according to the statement.

That same young man is currently a teacher at a school in Bityi near Mthatha, and is the father of five children.

He still has monthly follow-ups with Prof.

Mkhuseli Mashiyi, head of the Renal Unit at Mthatha General Hospital.

“I’m feeling great and don’t have any problems with my kidneys. They function 130%,” Genu says.

Auntie Amy celebrates 99th birthday On Thursday 23 November, Auntie Amy Petersen, as she is known among family and friends, turned 99 years old.

She celebrated her birthday in the presence of her loved ones at the Ebenezer Congregational Church hall.

Petersen, who now resides in Kuils River, was born on 23 November 1918 in Kimberley. She spent most of her life in Port Elizabeth and had nine children, six of whom are still alive.

“Ma is the matriarch and centre figure of our family and she used to be fond of dancing and playing dominoes at the senior club until the age of 95,” says one of her sons, Dennis Petersen.

She is the eldest of five sisters and two brothers and is the only surviving sibling.

“My parents were married for 52 years when my father passed away in 1998,” explains Petersen.

He says that Auntie Amy spent most of her years as a homemaker and caregiver

to her children and that she worked at a hotel for a few years.

“She is a very generous person by nature and always helped the needy and destitute by giving food and money to hungry children.

“The company was required to apply for a PAEL and it was granted on 15 June 2016.

In terms of current operations at the facility, it is worth noting that Cisco has just gone through a start-up phase which is required in order to initially configure and eventually run the factory optimally,” he added.

Faziloglu said that the PAEL requires that a noise assessment be undertaken and a report be submitted to the City of Cape Town

within three months of recommissioning the plant.

“The noise impact assessment will identify noise measures to ensure that the plant complies with the Western Cape noise control regulations,” he says.

Cisco confirmed that Demos Dracoulides and Associates environmental engineers have been appointed as the independent acoustic engineers to undertake the required noise monitoring and reporting.

According to general manager, Heinrich Kriel, “Monitoring started on 27 November and will be completed by 8 December 2017.

“Concerning the air emissions, the PAEL

requires that an annual stack emissions monitoring be undertaken and that an emissions monitoring report be submitted to the City of Cape Town by 1 June 2018 and annually thereafter.”

“Cisco will implement the required mitigation measures, as per the outcomes of the noise and emission monitoring, to ensure compliance with the PAEL. Cisco will continue to ensure that it complies with its legislative obligations and will also continue to contribute to the economy of Kuils River and its surrounding areas,” Faziloglu said.

Land rehab not required DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

here is no legal requirement for the overturned land on the corner of Langverwacht Road and Silver Oaks Avenue in Kuils River to be rehabilitated to its former state, should the appeal against the planned development be upheld.

So says Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development.

Bulldozers and diggers started earthworks on the property in St Dumas several weeks ago.

This while shocked residents were still awaiting the outcome of the appeal they had lodged against this planned development in

the area.

Herron says the owner of the property obtained an approved demolition permit, which permits the demolition of the buildings on the property.

“The clearing of the property for the intended development requires no approval from the City and could have been done irrespective of the land use application,” he says.

In the event of the appeal being upheld, the property owner will have to determine what the remedy (in terms of dust pollution, for instance), would be depending on the future use of the land, says Herron.

Taxi crash on R300 leaves six injured Six people were left injured on Monday morning when a taxi crashed into the centre median on the R300 in Bottelary.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene at 05:00.

Upon arrival, paramedics found the taxi parked in the left-hand emergency lane. One patient was found seated in the taxi while the remaining patients were found lying behind the vehicle.

“Paramedics assessed the patients and

found that two patients had sustained serious injuries while four others had sustained only minor to moderate injuries,” says a spokesperson at ER24.

The patients were treated for their injuries and were thereafter transported to various provincial hospitals for further treatment.

The exact cause of the incident is not yet known, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.

In die jongste voorval het ’n 56-jarige man van Durbanville ’n klag by die Durbanvillepolisie aanhangig gemaak dat hy afgepers word nadat hy naakfoto’s aan vermoedelik ’n vrou gestuur het.

Die persoon het hom gedreig dat die foto’s op sosiale media versprei sal word as hy nie ’n sekere bedrag betaal nie. Die man het toe R500 betaal, maar die persoon het nóg geld geëis, het kapt. Marchell Rhode, woordvoerder van die Durbanville-polisie, gesê.

Volgens hom is daar beslis ’n toename in

Hy het R1 000 aan haar betaal, maar die persoon het nog geld geëis. Niemand is nog in verband met enige van die voorvalle in hegtenis geneem nie.

Mabille Park safety boosted

afety in Mabille Park in Kuils River received a welcome boost recently, and it comes just in time for the festive sea-

son.

The Mabille Park Neighbourhood Watch received a donation of two-way radios, which will be used by their patrollers.

The Mabille Park Neighbourhood Watch was started about two years ago. There are 288 homes in the watch’s area, which stretches from Voortrekker Road to Mabille Street, and from Mabille Street to Protea Street.

“We are proud to be able to support the Mabille Park Neighbourhood Watch with this donation, as it connects them even further to the local security camera initiative and the radio communication network that

spreads across most of the City’s northern suburbs. Rapid communication is a vital part of the fight against crime. Hul eerste optrede vind op Vrydag 8 Desember by die Kenridge-winkelsentrum in Kenridge plaas, en op Kersdag 25 Desember sluit hulle die seisoen af by The Silo-hotel in die V & A Waterfront.

Die groepe het vanjaar in totaal 22 optredes waarmee beide groepe gaan poog om Die Burger-Kersfonds ’n hupstoot te gee.

“Ons het verlede jaar baie naby aan R20 000 gekom, en gaan vanjaar poog om dit te maak, maar kan dit ongelukkig nie doen sonder die hulp van die publiek nie,” sê die stigter, Riana van Wyk van Brackenfell.

Die groepe bestaan uit studente van die Riana van Wyk-musiekskool, wat elke jaar hul vakansies opoffer om in winkelsentrums in Kaapstad te loop en Kersliedjies te sing.

Van Wyk voeg by dat die projek ook nie moontlik sou wees sonder die ondersteuning van die verskeie winkelsentrums nie.

Hulle is Glengarry, Soneike, Kenridge, Aurora, N1 Stad, Sandown Retail Crossing, De Ville, Flamingo Square, Table View, Die Goue Akker, V & A Waterfront, Edgemead Village en Die Boord.

Die Walking Angels en die Walking Elves is die oorspronklike groep wat sedert 2000 al betrokke is met fondsinsameling vir Die Burger-Kersfonds en het deur die jare ’n instelling in veral die noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad geword.

Hulle word gekenmerk deur ’n plakkaat wat hulle by hulle dra met die embleem van Die Burger-Kersfonds daarop.

Water pipes The current water rationing that is taking place, which involves the complete cutting off of the water supply for short periods, can have a detrimental effect on water pipes, says Loots. “The turning on and off of water can cause pipes to burst, with subsequent risk of flooding and therefore excessive water bills. Clients would have to be aware of this fact and should be more observant in and around their properties to ensure there are no burst or leaking pipes.”

Swimming pools With reports that the water is evaporating quicker than it is raining, homeowners should cover their swimming pools to minimise water evaporation while they are not able to fill the pool due to the water restrictions, says Loots. “Swimming pools are designed to have water in them, so the system, walls and tiling of pools are more susceptible to damage if they are left exposed to the sunlight with no water. Fibreglass pools in particular need water weight from the inside to prevent them from popping out of the ground.”

Homeowners should switch off the pump if the water level drops to below the weir, as this will prevent the pump from sucking in air and in turn burning out, he says. “It is also a good idea to open the cover when it is raining to get as much water in the pool as possible.”

Gardens Due to the fact that drought is not a peril, no insurance policy will cover the reinstatement of gardens due to not being able to water the plants, says Loots. “Even though homeowners are prohibited by law and water restriction limitations from watering their gardens, they can still try to catch rainwater, use greywater or even get a borehole installed – therefore there are certain measures you can take to save your garden.”

In order to find out exactly what is and is not covered by the insurance policy, it is best for homeowners to speak to their broker who will be able to guide them through the complexities of the impact of drought on their insurance, concludes Loots.

ith Cape Town still facing extreme drought conditions, it is important for all homeowners to be aware of the impact of the drought on their home and therefore their insurance.

There are a number of areas of the home that can be impacted by water restrictions, including water pipes, swimming pools and gardens.

This is according to Dawie Loots, CEO of MUA Insurance Acceptances, who states that damage caused by drought is not a peril that is typically covered by insurance policies, because normally insurance policies cover sudden and unforeseen events, but a drought is a gradual operational cause.

The general principle in insurance is that policyholders should take all reasonable care to safeguard and protect their assets, he says. “In fact, people should act as though they are not insured. This premise also applies in a drought situation – policyholders need to do whatever is reasonably practical to minimise damage when they know about a situation like this.”

topviolenceinourcommunity was the theme of the event held in Wesbank to mark the start of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

The event, held at Wesbank No. 1 Primary School on Friday 1 December, was attended by the Grade 6 and 7 learners from Wesbank No. 1 Primary School, Hoofweg Primary School, as well as Rainbow Primary School.

The event focused primarily on how to combat and prevent violence against women and children.

The initiative was hosted by social workers Janice Cozett, Lauren Jansen and Samantha Williams, in collaboration with Safe Schools from the Department of Education, and featured an inclusive programme with all three schools performing entertainment items.

According to Pretty Mabumbula from Safe Schools, this marked the first year they were involved in an event such as this one in Wesbank. “We decided to get involved in Wesbank as there is a lot of gang violence here and children are being hurt,” says Mabumbula. “Our children are exposed and we want to ensure that we support messages aimed at stopping the violence.”

While introducing the day, social worker

Janice Cozett emphasised the fact that no learner should feel alone. “We are focussing on how violence personally affects learners within the community and within their homes,” said Cozett.

Present at the event were staff from the three schools and representatives from the community policing forum, the police youth desk and the Wesbank Development Forum, as well as Sergeant Danielle Rinkwest from the police.

Three candles were lit by learners Regan Johnson, Joey Africa and Annaliza Keyser as a means of symbolising hope, as well as commemorating the fight against women and child abuse and also World Aids Day. While addressing the learners, Sergeant Rinkwest emphasised the fact that it is every learner’s responsibility to keep himself or herself safe. She provided the learners with five safety tips, which included getting out of the way when gunshots are fired, informing an adult of where they are at all times, going home before it gets dark, not playing in deserted houses and areas, and reporting someone who touches them in an inappropriate manner.

“It is important that you look after your safety and don’t only focus on the festivities during this time,” Rinkwest told the learners.

We women simply want to be women

Everywhere you look there are posters, T-shirts and even make-up bags saying something about “empowering women”.

Let’s get real for a minute. Women don’t want to be empowered. They are forced to be. This life in which we find ourselves has created a void for strong women to step up and ignore their natural roles as mothers, wives and nurturers to do their part: making a financial contribution to unstable economies and overpriced commodities.

Women are being made to choose between cancelling an important work meeting and watching their daughter’s graduation. They are disheartened by the fact that they are pitching an idea to a room full of men – while their son plays his last cricket match of the season and they haven’t been able to attend one.

Women are strong. We are naturally programmed to ensure the survival of our species. We will kill for our kids and will always put their needs and their hopes and We will go out of dreams far above our own. We will go our way to out of our way to worship our worship our husbands and treat husbands and them as the master treat them as of the house – although we both the master of work full days. We will “hunt” and the house – “gather” the food and groceries so although we no-one has to both work full search at the last minute for a bar of days ... soap. We will wake up at 04:00 to bake a tray of cupcakes for a school party. We’ll agree to PTA roles and nearly kill ourselves to meet the expectations of the teachers and stay-athome moms who cannot understand how we handle it all ...

We will use our resources to fundraise and sell pancakes, in-between answering emails on our androids and keeping an eye on our children’s sporting events.

Women cannot be women. We cannot wake up and take five minutes to snuggle our kids, get them ready for school and then leave to face endless hours in the day ... Instead, we snowball from room to room, ensuring that the mad cyclone of early morning events, school lunches and breakfasts, hubby’s work meal and the dogs’ food are all in place before we spend the last five minutes on a shower, our teeth and hair. It’s only once we’re five hours into office emails that we realise we haven’t had anything to eat or drink ourselves. As a woman, at some point, you must admit failure: You cannot hold a job, be a mom and maintain your family home, so you have to choose one.

When I say choose, I mean you need to pick your career over it all. You have to work because you pay for at least half of everything. You put your kids in aftercare and employ a domestic worker. This woman is living a portion of your life that you cannot find the time to enjoy – raising your kids and enjoying your home while you’re out there “juggling balls” and slaving away. Women don’t want to be empowered. We are forced to be. What we truly want is to be women.

It’s no wonder half the women you meet are on calming meds or seeing a psychologist. The other half are addicts: wine, gym, running ... we are broken.

I shudder to think of all the women who run away from home; who take their own lives; who get drunk every night just to cope. So how should women really feel empowered? How about sitting and enjoying a hot cup of tea for a change; watching their husband and kids hang up the washing once in a while; coming home to a cooked meal and tidy home?

Most importantly, just having time to enjoy their family, their home and themselves. – Vicki Fick, entrepreneur, mother.

Rumours of rigging are just ridiculous I am very disappointed to read about this (“Pageant was rigged”, 22/11).

I entered my niece, who was ultimately crowned Miss Zevenwacht Mall. She did not want to enter at first but I encouraged her.

I was at every rehearsal, and at the first rehearsal there were supposed to be 90 entrants, but not even 50% pitched up. Then some of the entrants were late for their slot, but they still got to do their thing. In the second round the last 12 were chosen. At that time there were no complaints among the girls. They were taken around the mall to the shops and everyone was happy.

I was unfortunately not able to be at the crowning, but I am proud to say my niece deserved to win. I do not know your sources, but I can honestly say that I and my family have no contacts or relations with any of Zevenwacht Mall’s management or the judges.

This should have been a happy occasion for my niece who deserves her win.

However, sour grapes and jealousy have left a bitter taste. She has achieved so much in her young life and she does not need this kind of publicity.

It saddens me that I entered her into the competition and now it has ended like this.

And to the person (your source) who was supposedly “involved” in the pageant – why didn’t he or she bring it up immediately? Why hide behind anonymity?

Jealousy is really a terrible thing.

Shoddy work on the R300 a pain I would like to comment on the article posted in Tygerburger regarding construction on the R300 (“Construction on R300 to only be completed in 2018”, 22/11).

Has Mr Kobus van der Walt travelled on the R300 recently?

On the north-bound section between Hindle and Stellenbosch Arterial, it seems the contractors completed that section after having their year-end function.

Cats’ eyes are everywhere on the road except on the white lines. It also seems as if the contractors installing the cats’ eyes are a different company to the guys painting the white lines.

They clearly have a different set of specifications as to where what must go, as the cats’ eyes are in some places 30cm from the white lines. Who inspects these jobs and how can it be allowed that such poor workmanship can go by unnoticed?

The contractor is probably smiling all the way to the bank!

Come on, Sanral. The least you can do is inspect the work being carried out on

our freeways.

Moet dié R24 nou poskantoor red?

Ek wil ook graag my misnoeë uitspreek oor die poskantoor die situasie met pakkies wat via wish.com en Joom bestel word, misbruik (“Sakeman kla oor poskantoor se ‘geldgierigheid’,” 22/11).

Ek bestel byvoorbeeld items wat my tussen R5 en R14 (posgeld en verpakking ingesluit) kos. Ek moet nou by die poskantoor nog ’n bykomende R24 vir ’n sogenaamde hanteringsfooi betaal.

Ek kan dit nog verstaan as ek duur items koop of iets wat in groot verpakking is, maar van die items wat ek koop, pas in ’n normale koevert.

Of het dit alles te doen met die feit dat die poskantoor ’n staatsonderneming is, wat weer gered moet word deur die duisende R24-hanteringsfooie?

Workers at HIV clinics treated to lunch DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

o celebrate World Aids Day this past Friday, the Desmond Tutu Foundation in Cape Town, in partnership with Butler’s Pizza, delivered lunch to the many overburdened health care workers at local HIV treatment clinics across Cape Town.

In the far northern suburbs of Brackenfell and Kraaifontein, City clinics provide ART treatment and care to some 7300 patients, excluding Kuils River patients who are referred to Sarepta or Kleinvlei for treatment.

Between January and October this year,

598 tested positive for HIV at City clinics in this region, according to JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security and social services.

A total of 1723 HIV tests were conducted at Brackenfell clinic where 47 tested positive; 12 000 at Wallacedene and Bloekombos clinics where 520 tested positive, and 2017 at Kuils River clinic where 26 tested positive.

In South Africa as a whole the picture is bleak, with about 270 000 new HIV infections and 110 000 HIV-related deaths in South Africa during 2016.

It is estimated that about seven million South Africans are currently living with

Hoërskool Bellville spog met eie astrobaan Die Hoërskool Bellville spog nou met sy eie astrobaan, wat verlede Woensdag amptelik geopen is.

Die skoolhoof, Deon du Plessis, het verrigtinge begin, waarna Marius Fivaz, voorsitter van die beheerliggaam, die bedankings gedoen het, die lint geknip het en die eregaste met ’n wedstryd vermaak is.

Tydens die wedstryd van 80 minute is die bal eers deur verteenwoordigers van die skool se hokkiegeskiedenis, wat in die 1950’s begin het, afgeslaan.

Book to help prevent abuse A new book, written in language children can understand, is now available for free to guide parents and role players on preventing child sexual abuse.

The release of the book coincided with World Aids Day on 1 December, but also forms part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

The authors, a social worker and a clinical psychologist, have more than 50 years of combined experience in the field of child protection.

It is for this reason that Edith Kriel and Marita Rademeyer decided to use that combined knowledge to develop the book, titled Preventing Child Sexual Abuse: A Resource for Parents, Caregivers and Teachers.

The activity book, available from Jelly Beanz, a non-profit organisation that works with children and families who have suffered trauma and abuse, is written in a way that engages children and guides parents step by

step in making a serious discussion fun, according to a Jelly Beanz statement.

“The parent thus has the privilege of being the first person to discuss sexuality with the child and to cement healthy values in this very important part of a child’s life.

“Children are bombarded with sexual messages on television, social media, magazines and on the internet. Young people are being exposed to pornography at a rate never experienced before in our country.

“Unfortunately children often act out what they have seen, which has led to an enormous increase in children being abused by other children,” the organisation says.

Jelly Beanz believes that parents and caregivers need to engage children in open and honest conversations about bodies and sexuality to help prevent sexual abuse.

Soos Saartjie is dié nuwe wynreeks raar MARITA MEYER

H

aar naam is Saartjie en haar gunsteling-druif is ’n semillon. Sy’t net oë vir een man – haar mens-pa Arno Smith, die wynmaker by Hillcrest.

As Arno op die kwad spring om deur die wingerde te ry, ry Saartjie saam. As Arno vroegoggend druiwe pluk om te proe, proe Saartjie al stertswaaiend saam. Haar gunsteling-druif is semillon.

Toe Arno dus aan ’n naam moes dink vir Hillcrest se nuwe enkelkultivar-wynreeks, was Saartjie die logiese keuse. Soos Saartjie, is die nuwe reeks enig in sy soort.

“Saartjie is ’n besondere Jack Russelltjie,” vertel Arno. Sy was die kleinste van al die babahondjies en ietwat skaam. Sy’t so ’n oulike hartvormige vlekkie op haar voorkop. Ek was dadelik verlief.”

Die dertigjarige Arno, ’n oud-leerder van die Hoërskool J.G. Meiring, het sewe jaar gelede by Hillcrest begin werk ná hy sy studies op Elsenburg voltooi het.

Een van sy vriende uit sy Elsenburg-dae het ’n Jack Russell, genaamd Boet, gehad.

“Ek’t toe gesê die dag wat ek ’n hond kry, gaan ek haar Saartjie noem. Soos die karakters in ons eerste leesboek op skool, Boet en Saartjie.”

Daar’s ’n ander Saartjie ook in Arno se familie – sy tannie van Namibië. En volgens Arno is die twee Saartjies baie dieselfde – “twee fierce old ladies” wat seker maak hulle word gehoor as dinge nie na hul sin verloop nie.

Saartjie-die-hond is deesdae ’n celebrity in die Durbanville-wynvallei. Kinders en ander hondekinders kom kuier graag vir haar by die restaurant op die plaas. Maar moenie jouself flous nie – sy sal eers haar blaffe blaf om seker te maak jy weet wie’s die baas van

dié plaas!

Haar gesiggie verskyn ook op die etiket van die nuwe wynbottels – vernuftig geteken deur Arno se swaer, Jonathan Mitchell.

Arno het in 2016 begin eksperimenteer met semillon-druiwe, wat gewoonlik in versnitte gebruik word. Hy’t ’n ton van die druiwe geoes en dit natuurlik in ou Franse eikehoutvate laat gis.

Geen kommersiële gis is bygevoeg om die proses te bespoedig nie – ’n tegniek wat wild fermentation genoem word.

Ná gisting plaasgevind het, is die wyn vir ’n verdere ses maande in die vate gelaat om te verouder. Die resultaat het selfs Arno se verwagtinge oortref en omdat dié druif Saartjie se gunsteling is, is die wyn vernoem na sy viervoetige vriend.

Die sukses het Arno aangespoor om verder te eksperimenteer en in 2004 het hy besluit om drie ander kultivars aan te plant: Cabernet Franc, Malbec en Petit Verdot. Dit was ’n dapper stap, want Hillcrest was nog altyd bekend vir sy Bordeaux-wyne.

Arno se waagstuk het geslaag en nou pryk die landgoed met ’n fantastiese reeks enkelkultivar-wyne. Die drie rooi wyne is van die 2016-oesjaar, terwyl die wit wyn vanjaar geoes is.

Die nuwe wynreeks is verlede week by ’n geselligheid op die wynplaas bekendgestel.

Die verskillende wyne is saam met klein bordjies kos (tapasstyl) bedien.

Saartjie was ook daar – sy’t al stertswaaiend ’n draai by elke tafel gemaak en haar soos ’n regte celeb gedra. Al wat dié madam nie self kan doen nie, is haar handtekening uitdeel. Sy’t haar mens-pa gevra om die wynbottels te onderteken.

En met twee klein kinders en ’n vrou by die huis, was hierdie die grootste uitdaging op die stel van sy jongste fliek, Vuil Wasgoed.

“Jou lyf raak net nooit heeltemal gewoond daaraan nie,” sê die akteur Tim Theron, wat in Bellville gebore is.

“Maar dit is letterlik die enigste uitdaging wat ek sou kon uitwys,” skerm hy.

In Vuil Wasgoed volg kykers die verhaal van Wim (Bouwer Bosch) en Kevin (Bennie Fourie) wat al vir jare in ’n klerewassery werk. Saans hou hulle partytjie in hul kliënte se klere. By só ’n partytjie ontdek hulle ’n afgesnyde vinger wat aan ’n juweeldief behoort.

Die tweestuks word hierna in ’n onderwêreld ingesleep met ’n hele rits misdadigers en polisiebeamptes op hul spoor.

Die rolprent, wat op 8 Desember uitgereik word, spog met ’n rits bekendes in die SuidAfrikaanse vermaakbedryf, onder andere Bosch, Fourie, Nico Panagio, Louis Minnaar, Simone Nortmann en Leandie Du Randt Bosch.

Theron sê hy dink almal op stel het vroeg al gevoel hulle werk aan iets spesiaals.

Boonop het hulle goed saamgewerk.

“Ek, Bennie en Bouwer (Bosch) ken mekaar al van ons universiteitsdae af en ons verstaan mekaar se sin vir humor. So dit was hope pret om saam met hulle op stel te wees.”

“Daar is lekker gekuier, gesels en grappies gemaak wanneer ons nie voor die kamera moes wees nie.”

Dit was ook nie die enigste hoogtepunt vir hom nie.

“Daar is natuurlik ’n klein seuntjie binne my wat dit verskriklik baie geniet het om die aksietonele te verfilm!”

Dit was juis een van die redes hoekom hy by die projek betrokke geraak het.

“Vir my persoonlik was dit ook ’n kans om ’n genre aan te pak waaroor ek mal is, en ook ’n karakter wat heeltemal anders is as enige iets wat ek voorheen gedoen het.”

Theron geniet rolle wat hom uitdaag.

As hy nie op die skerm te sien is nie, hou sy kinders, Sophia (3) en Migael (10 maande), hom en sy vrou, Juanli, besig.

Stokperdjies? ‘‘Skuus, ek verstaan nie die woord nie,” skerts hy. “Tans is daar nie veel tyd vir stokperdjies nie – ons twee besige mensies maak daarvan seker!”

Die gesin bly op Stellenbosch.

Theron laat egter nie die gras onder sy voete groei nie en het pas klaar verfilm aan Quentin Krog se nuwe rolprent, ’n Ander Mens.

ennie van Greunen, bekroonde skrywer, regisseur en vervaardiger, het die afgelope drie maande ’n fees gehad – ’n “nerd fest” soos hy dit noem – en homself verlustig in rympies, raaisels, optiese illusies, geheime kodes ... alles in die naam van “navorsing”.

Dit was navorsing vir Tygervallei-sentrum se tweede Clue Room. En volgens Hennie is dit dié keer nog méér senutergend (en vet pret natuurlik) as die vorige een.

“Ek’t ’n jol gehad,” vertel Hennie.

“Ek’t op die mat van ons sitkamer op Melkbosstrand gesit en op die agterkant van ou teaterplakkate die twee storielyne beplan en die raaisels met my Sharpies (’n soort pen) bygevoeg.

“Ná die reuse-sukses van Clue Room vroeer vanjaar, het Tygervallei-sentrum se bestuur ons (vir hom en Pedro Kruger) genader om dit weer te doen. Ek’t net een voorwaarde gehad: die een Clue Room moet ’n zombie-kamer wees,” sê Hennie.

Volgens Hennie het hy self geskrik toe hy die klankbaan vir die eerste keer hoor.

“Maar die spanne het ’n keuse of hulle die klanke wil hoor. ‘Scary on’ of ‘scary off’,” voeg Hennie by met ’n ondeunde uitdrukking in sy oë.

Die ander Clue Room is nie noodwendig makliker om uit te ontsnap nie, dit is net meer gesinsvriendelik.

“Jy bevind jouself binne-in die brein van Garvey Lytle. Garvey is in ’n koma ná hy ’n geluksteen by ’n geraamte in die Kango-grotte ‘gesteel’ het.

“Die enigste manier om Garvey se lewe te red, is om in sy onderbewussyn rond te delf, die geluksteen te vind en dit terug te sit in die geraamte se hand.”

Jy en jou spanmaats het net 60 minute om Garvey se lewe te red. Die digitale klok op die kamermuur herinner jou daaraan dat tyd nie aan jou kant is nie.

Creating future leaders through the arts NOLUVU LUDIDI Community Arts Unlimited (CAU) was founded by Herman Solomon in 2013 in response to the needs of the children in the Kuils River community.

This non-profit organisation based in Kuils River focuses on the development of children, “to create leadership through music and to build confidence so that they may become the future leaders of their own community,” says Solomon.

On Saturday 25 November, CAU hosted a concert at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch. This event also served as a community outreach event for the Music Department of the University of Cape Town. The concert was well attended by the family and friends of the children who took part in the event.

iaad Moosa tries to figure this out with his hilarious one-man show, Life Begins, which offers a snapshot of his life as a 40 year old, a father of three children, a husband, comedian and actor within the current cultural and political climate.

Following sold-out shows across the country, Moosa returns by popular demand for the last Cape Town performance of Life Begins at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Saturday 16 December.

“Even though I am now 40, in many ways I feel like I’m still crawling, and I’m looking back at my journey from being an aspirational doctor, coming from a relatively conservative Muslim background where both my parents were doctors, and how I actually journeyed to becoming a stand-up comedian,” says Moosa.

As an award-winning comedian, actor, writer and presenter, Moosa is one of South Africa’s most popular and acclaimed funnymen who just happens to be a qualified medical doctor as well.

Known as the “Comedy Doctor”, he certainly seems to have the remedy for the nation’s ills – a healthy dose of laughter.

The Life Begins tour will also see Moosa performing in Newcastle, Durban and Empangeni.

“The show is very philosophical and existential. It involves the normal issues of getting older while at the same time experiencing, at a maturity where I’m supposed to be wise, a world that is completely turned on its head – with Trump and Brexit; and in South Africa, ‘State Capture’ and the ‘Fees Must Fall’ movement,” explains Moosa. “The show is about how I negotiate all these things happening around me while trying to maintain a positive attitude. Through my comedic lens, I hope to put a different spin on that, and

‘Mozart and Salieri’ at Artscape in February Cape Town City Ballet will open the new year with a bang by presenting a groundbreaking adaptation of Alexander Pushkin’s short story, Mozart and Salieri.

Acclaimed choreographer Marc Goldberg has combined a classical story with 21st century design to create a cinematic modern ballet experience as never seen before.

By digitalising the sets yet retaining the silhouettes of the 17th century, this world premiere promises a lot more than just beautiful dancing.

The story made famous by Sir Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus follows the rumoured rivalry of Mozart and court composer, Antonio Salieri. Dark undercurrents of jealousy from Salieri are witnessed as his pious demeanour is challenged when meeting Mozart.

The ballet is, however, not only a story of political intrigue and envy. It follows the love story of Mozart and Constanze – their meeting, marriage and subsequent story beautifully depicted within the palace gardens.

Another exciting facet to Goldberg’s adaptation is his exploration of what it might have been like to create such a prolific body of work by the age of 35, as Mozart famously did.

Sweeping scenes depicting Mozart within his own creative process add a layer to the story not previously explored.

avid Barnet en Tjaart Oosthuizen staan bekend as die “Legendes van die See” en is oorgehaal om op Nuwejaarsdag vir die twaalfde jaar as wenners van die uitmergelende Jumtree Trans Agulhas-rubberbootresies uit die stryd te tree.

Vanjaar is die 30ste keer wat die wêreld se moeilikste opblaasbootuitdaging tussen Plettenbergbaai en Vishoek van 28 Desember tot 1 Januarie beslis word.

Tjaart (Welgemoed) en David (Blouberg) is al vir 15 jaar spanmaats, wat ’n rekord is in dié kompetisie.

“Ek is al 19 jaar betrokke in die sport.

Ek het betrokke geraak in 1998 toe ek as backup op ’n Trans Agulhas gegaan het saam met vriende wat deelgeneem het om meer te leer oor die sport. Ek het onmiddellik belanggestel en die volgende jaar deelgeneem aan my eerste Trans Agulhas.

“My en David se paadjies het in 2002 gekruis toe ons kragte saamgesnoer en ons eie span begin het. In daardie selfde

jaar is ons gekroon as die Suid-Afrikaanse nasionale kampioene, sowel as kampioene van die Westelike Provinsie, Trans Atlantic en Trans Agulhas,” vertel Tjaart. Voorbereiding duur die hele jaar wat gimnasiumwerk insluit en baie tyd op die see in verskillende weersomstandighede.

“Ons oefen deurgaans deur die jaar in die gimnasium met kardiovaskulêre- en kragoefeninge. Ons spandeer ook baie tyd op die see in verskillende weers- en see-omstandighede aangesien die Trans Agulhas ’n verskeidenheid van weerpatrone mag inhou.

“Dit is baie veeleisend, alhoewel ons glo 90% van die bydrae tot ons sukses lê in ons voorbereiding – fisiek sowel as geestelik. Die adrenalienafskeiding help ’n mens gelukkig om die onmiddellike fisieke pyne van die resies te oorkom.

“Sowat drie maande voor die resies verskerp ons alle oefeninge. Kommunikasie en beplanning tussen ons as spanmaats is van kardinale belang en ons glo dit is ook grotendeels die rede vir ons sukses in die sport,” sê Tjaart.

Drie broers saam in een span SAREL BURGER Met die sonderlinge situasie van drie broers wat vir die Tygerberg-klub in die WP se eerste liga speel, skep dit terselfdertyd groot hoofbrekens vir die tellinghouers in die Floridapark-span se wedstryde.

Andley (25), Aython (23) en Azario (19) Adams het nie net dieselfde voorletter nie, maar is al drie regterhandse snelboulers. ’n Vierde Adams in die span, Jancan, is darem nie ook familie nie.

Die drie broers se pa, Johannes (Hannie) Adams, wat tot in 1997 vir Tygerberg se eerste span gespeel het en tans in die WP-unie se uitvoerende bestuur dien, was tot in 2016 vir 20 jaar lank die klub se voorsitter. En tans is Alnico Adams (ook nie familie nie) die voorsitter van die Tiere-klub.

Die drie Adams-broers woon by hul ouers in Ravensmead en is ’n handvol in die huishouding, vertel pa Hannie.

“Hulle gesels die heeldag krieket en hulle eet ’n mens uit die huis uit!”

Hul oudste broer, Antonio (30), het al die pad gevat. Hy is ’n draaibouler wat net sosiale krieket speel.

Die enigste vroulike lid van die familie, ma Michelle, was in haar jongdae (as Michelle Brown) een van die top-800 m-atlete in die Westelike Provinsie.

Die Adams-broers was almal in die Laerskool Bellview en die Hoërskool Belhar.

Aython en Andley speel in die Kaapse wintermaande graafskapkrieket in Engeland, terwyl Azario, ontpop het as ’n vaardige afrigter by laerskole.

Andley kan spog met boulsyfers van 7/34 wat hy twee seisoene gelede vir Tygerberg teen die Avendale-klub ingeoes het.

Die Adams­broers Andley, Azario en Aython speel saam in die eerste span van die Tyger­ berg­krieketklub.

Aython se beste vertoning was die 5/29 wat hy verlede seisoen teen die Primrose-klub platgetrek het, terwyl hy vroeër in November met sy 4/14 ’n driekuns teen Guguletu behaal het. Azario volg in sy broers se voetspore. In ’n 20/20-wedstryd teen Guguletu het hy 4/10 laat kantel.
