SUZIE’S HUB: COMMUNITY FLOCKS TO LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR’S CONVERTED SPACE

‘A place to call home’ JAYDEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

H

ers is a rare gem with the feel of home, friendship and nostalgia rolled up and served in every drop of java, and with rustic “grandma’s place” decor to add credence to the homely feel. This “hers” is a treasured little community hub in Kuils River called Suzie’s, which doubles as a coffee shop where the locals’ catch-up sessions are served warm with homemade roosterkoek and moerkoffie. Owner Suzie Mathys, a former teacher,

has never lost her love for the community or her creative flair. “I don’t want this to be a stuck-up place. I want people to come here and interact with me and one another. However, if you want to be alone, here is plenty of space where you can sit and just be by yourself,” she says. Various community events are held at Suzie’s, such as the recent launch of local Sara-Jayne King’s book, Killing Karoline. Schools also arrange breakfasts and luncheons here, and they play host to a number of NGO functions and round-table discussions, Mathys says.

The shop also hosts craft classes, where locals gather to learn crafting from the former technology and needlework teacher. “My heart is always open to the community because it is important that we share with one another. I want a successful business, characterised by the willingness to always give back.” Mathys prides herself in making use of local bakers and preserve-makers. “I want people to come here and know who is making what, because they’ve had it before at that person’s house.” Many have come in for a quick bite and

ended up running into someone they know, hence Suzie’s is known as “a place where people meet”, and this is exactly what Mathys wants. “I want people, whether they have less or more, to be able to come here to enjoy a slice of cake and a cup of coffee.” Mathys says she was initially reluctant to start a coffee shop because she cannot cook “fancy” dishes. “I knew that if I were to sell food, it would be the kind of food that I grew up with, such as green bean stew and sweet-and-sour curry meatballs.” V To page 2.
