KUILS RIVER, PAROW: SCAM ARTISTS CLAIMING TO BE CITY EMPLOYEES
Scammers on the prowl DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
A
scam artist posing as a City employee is out and about, preying on vulnerable people in Kuils River. A pensioner from Brantwood, who wishes to remain anonymous, nearly fell victim to this man last week. “He knocked at my door and informed me that he worked for the City of Cape Town’s Electricity Department and that he needed to check all the electrical connections in my
house in order to arrange for a special pensioner’s discount for me,” the elderly woman says. Unknowingly she let him in. Fortunately both her adult children were home at the time and followed the man from room to room. “I could see that his eyes were searching the rooms and looking at everything except the electrical connections, and it was at this stage that I became suspicious of him. I then immediately telephoned the City, who advised me that it was a scam. He was here under a guise, looking to steal from us. He of
course denied it and assured us that we would be getting a discount, but my son asked him to leave and escorted him out of the house,” she says. She describes him as a young man, small of build, with no front teeth. “The City of Cape Town’s Electricity Department wishes to warn residents of a scam artist fleecing residents with all sorts of stories and promises, and urges residents not to let anyone into their homes before checking their credentials,” says a City spokesperson.
“Any member of the public can verify whether visitors to their home are in fact employed by the City by phoning the Call Centre on 0860 103 089 to confirm whether work is being carried out in their area. Inform the official that you will allow him/her entry only once the Call Centre has verified his/her identity. Residents may also ask for a letter of appointment outlining the purpose of the project on a City-labelled letterhead, signed by a City official with contact details on the letterhead.” V To page 2.
