bers from Habitat for Humanity oversaw the craftsmanship of the Netcare staff every day. “The experience this year was even better than last year. The teams had a lot of enthusiasm when they came in,” said Alex Honhaar, operations manager for Habitat for Humanity. The Netcare group has been building homes for disadvantaged community members in the country since 2007. Mande Toubkin, Netcare’s national corporate social investment manager said: “Netcare as a leading South African healthcare group, is determined to continue working towards the achievement of a stronger, healthier South Africa.” When the tools went down it was time to hand over the keys to Motjetje and her husband. Everybody formed a circle and passed the house keys to each other. With every pass someone had to give a word of encouragement to the new homeowner. The project ended with a well-deserved lunch for Netcare staff and Habitat for Humanity members.
This is the second year that the Netcare Hospital in Kuils River has worked in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity to make the dreams of owning a home a reality. The Kuils River Hospital was one of five Netcare Hospitals that embarked on this project. Motjetje was lost for words when she tried to express her gratitude to everyone who participated. “I am very happy and so excited, God bless you all,” Motjetje said. She will be moving into her new home with her husband and two children. They used to live in a shack before, made of metal sheets and wood. This shack will now be a memory as it lies in their new home’s back yard. Netcare Kuils River had 115 different employees working on Mjtetje’s house alternately over the course of five days. “This equates to about 23 people a day. The volunteers consisted of nurses and administrative staff. Everybody was very eager to help out,” said Nolan Daniels, general manager at Netcare. He said staff started with the foundation on Monday, by Wednesday the inside of the house was being done. Thursday the roof was Happiness is...a new home.
