Ward councillor Jacob Jacobs says his hands are tied, “because the wall was put up by the provincial government and does not belong to the municipality, there is nothing we can do until the owner of the wall lodges a complaint”.

Jacobs has been in contact with the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) who is responsible for the maintenance of the road reserve along all national routes, in an attempt to resolve the issue.

A Sarepta resident is outraged over the gradual destruction of a vibracrete wall which fences off the residential area from the R300.

“We live in fear because we have no protection from thieves breaking into our homes. People now have easy access to the residential area from the R300 and they have an easy escape route via the R300,” says the resident.

Attempts have been made to stop people from stealing parts of the wall.

“I have phoned the police to tell them about the wall. They caught the thieves red-handed and arrested them but they were later re-

“We believe that the breaking down of the vibracrete walls is more of a criminal issue than an engineering one. Sanral has therefore, as part of the freeway management system, deployed CCTV camera surveillance along the R300 and is working with the Metro Police to conduct regular surveillance of road assets, including fencing, using the CCTV surveillance as a tool.

“The issue however remains a criminal one, which Sanral alone cannot address,” says Van der Walt.

Sanral has replaced parts of the wall a number of times.

“To date we have spent in excess of R30 000 on repairing this specific wall. As part of maintenance we continue to repair the fences to the best of our ability and available resources, knowing that it could save a life,” says Van der Walt. . In a bid to ensure the safety of pedestrians along the R300, City of Cape Town traffic officers distributed 1 500 safety pamphlets to pedestrians during peak traffic hours.

Officers have noticed that some pedestrians are reluctant to use pedestrian bridges to cross the freeway, and opt instead for the shortest possible distance between two points. The problem is compounded when motorists stop to pick up pedestrians or would-be job-seekers.

Even though pedestrians are not allowed on freeways, the traffic services department appeals to motorists to be vigilant and aware of pedestrian activity.

Pedestrians are reminded of the following: . When crossing the road, use pedestrian crossings and bridges where possible; . Always walk on the pavement, never in the road; . Wear reflective clothing to increase your visibility to other road users; . Do not leave children unaccompanied on or near a road; . Avoid walking on or near a road when intoxicated; and . Always obey road traffic signs and follow instructions from traffic officers.

Verkeerslui­tekort ’n groot krisis DESIREÉ RORKE

Die kritieke tekort aan verkeersbeamptes in dele van die noordelike voorstede het onlangs onder die soeklig gekom, ná hulpkrete van die gemeenskap en TygerBurger-lesers.

Die Stad Kaapstad het die krisis erken en gemeld dat die probleem oor die volgende vyf jaar aangespreek gaan word, mits voldoende fondse beskikbaar gestel word.

Dit blyk dat die Stad in dié stadium meer fokus plaas op verkeerspolisiëring in terme van boetes, terwyl inwoners voel daar word nie dienste gelewer om verkeersvloei aan te spreek nie.

In vele briewe het lesers die bul by die horings gepak en die probleem soos volg geskets: Adele de Jager het die vraag reguit gevra: “Het Brackenfell verkeerspolisie? Nee, ek wonder regtig! Want as ons het, waar is hulle soggens tussen sewe en agt?

Volgens De Jager is die verkeersvloei tussen Ou Paarlweg en Brackenfell Boulevard amper elke oggend ’n gemors omdat verkeersreëls openlik verbreek word.

“So een keer in ’n paar maande word ons vereer met die teenwoordigheid van verkeerspolisie (seker van ’n ander dorp af), net om nooit weer daarna gesien te word nie,” sê sy, en voeg by dat die goeie nuus seker is dat sy haarself nie hoef te verknors oor verkeersreëls nie.

Haar sentiment word gedeel deur ander inwoners wat al hande in die hare is oor dié kwessie wat hulle as onuithoudbaar beskou.

Salome Lategan van Kuilsrivier sê dat sy, “genoop voel om haar en ander motoriste se noodkrete kliphard uit te gil aan die Stad Kaapstad”. Volgens Salome sit die verkeer by al die hoofuitgange na Kaapstad of Bellville elke oggend vir ure vasgepen. “Waar is die verkeersbeamptes om net ’n bietjie te wys dat hul darem bereid is om die verkeer te reguleer?”

TygerBurger het vasgestel en by verskeie ingeligte bronne verneem dat daar slegs nege verkeersbeamptes in diens staan vir die hele gebied van Bellville-Suid tot in Kraaifontein.

Die distrik sluit glo Belville-Suid, Belhar, Welgemoed, Riebeeckshof, Durbanville, Durbanville Hills, Fisantekraal, Klippieville, Kraaifon-

tein, Wallacedene, Bloekombos, Scottsville, Scottsdene, die hele Brackenfell, Oakdale, Stikland en Stikland-industria in. Daar is 18 skole in dié gebiede.

“Daar is heeltemal te min verkeersbeamptes om by al die publiek se klagtes, verkeersknope, ongelukke, of skole uit te kom. Ons is al vir ’n paar jaar onderbeman en die tekort is kritiek,” het een van TygerBurger se bronne gesê.

Volgens ’n ander bron is een van die vernaamste klagtes wat ontvang word en nie suksesvol aangespreek kan word nie, juis verkeersvloei-probleme. Die Stad het nie die syfer bevestig of ontken nie, maar in ’n aanbieding, wat aan TygerBurger gestuur

is, bekendgemaak dat daar 278 verkeersbeamptes stadswyd is.

Volgens Richard Bosman van die Stad se veiligheids- en sekuriteitdienste is daar onlangs ’n begrotingsversoek gerig vir meer beamptes in al die streke van die stad. Die versoek sal by die Stad se sentrale raadsvergadering op 28 Maart bespreek word.

“Dit is ’n feit dat die verkeersdienste en ander veiligheidsdienste reg oor die stad onderbeman is … tog is dit ook ’n feit dat ons met die min beamptes groot suksesse in terme van statistiek behaal,” sê hy.

Lillian Valentyn who hails from Kuils River and Yolanda Scholtz from Melkbosstrand were announced the lucky winners out of scores of brides who entered the competition around the country on Thursday.

The annual competition will be hosted by SAWeddings.co.za on Saturday 21 April at the Clearwater Mall in Johannesburg.

To enter, the women had to post pictures of themselves on their big day onto the website and the public had a chance to vote for who they thought should be in the finals.

“I was ecstatic when I heard I won,” says Valentyn.

“At first I thought it was a prank, but then I realised it wasn’t. I am so privileged to have been selected as a finalist and to me it is a great achievement.”

While paramedics strapped the boy to spinal immobilisation equipment, his condition started to deteriorate and a decision was made to call the Medicopter.

The ER24 Discovery Medicopter, which had a doctor on board, landed at the scene and paramedics then stabilised the boy before airlifting him to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by police.

A four-year-old boy was seriously injured when the vehicle he was in veered from the road and rolled down a short embankment on Faure Street in Kuils River on Sunday.

The boy was travelling with his two uncles and three young girls.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene, the occupants of the vehicle were all found lying on the grass outside the vehicle. Some of them had been thrown out of the vehicle during the accident and others were removed by bystanders who had come across the accident before paramedics arrived.

Verskeie bekendes het hul steun toegesê aan Kansa se Shavathon wat Vrydag 2 Maart by Sanlam-hoofkantoor in Bellville gehou is.

En hulle het nie geskroom om die hare te laat waai nie!

Aden Thomas, die Kfm-aanbieder, wat dié oggend sy program van daar af uitgesaai het, was een van die bekendes wie se hare gewaai het.

Liesel van der Westhuizen, Kfm-aanbieder en aanbieder van die SABC se 3-ontbytprogram, en Elana Afrika het nie hul (reeds kort) hare geskeer nie, maar het nie geskroom om die spuitverfblikke góéd in te lê nie.

Liesel was van plan om haar hare af te skeer, maar kon weens kontraktuele verpligtinge nie.

WCED: Enrol early for ‘a better education’ The year is only a couple of months old and the first phase of the early enrolment process for the 2013 school year was already rolled out on Thursday last week.

Donald Grant, Western Cape minister of education says: “Early enrolment is important because parents do not always get their children into their first schools of choice.

What we have found in previous years is that parents apply only to a small number of schools and in many instances, only one school.”

Parents are not guaranteed their first schools of choice and they need to be prepared for the fact that their application can be unsuccessful.

The Kuils River Youth Trust has been employing social workers in schools in the Kuils River area to serve families and individuals who cannot afford these services. It is the Trusts’ dream to employ more social workers in more schools.

Versoening maak gesond Versoening is om te vergewe én weer vriende te word. In hierdie wêreld waarin ons leef is daar baie stukkende verhoudinge. Ouer en kind wat kwaad is vir mekaar.

Vriende wat nie meer met mekaar praat nie. Families wat met stywe nekke in vyandskap met mekaar lewe. Kom ons gesels oor versoening.

Die eerste vraag is natuurlik: wat beteken versoening? Versoening beteken om weer vriende te word.

Om die stukkende verhouding reg te maak. En wanneer ek sê die vriendskapsverhouding herstel, bedoel ek ook in die huwelik, in families, tussen ouer en kind, tussen kollegas en ja, natuurlik, ook tussen vriende. Versoening is belangrik om vrede in jou eie gemoed te kry en vrede met die een te kry met wie jy in onmin is. Versoening maak gesond. Versoening herstel weer die vriendskapsband. Haat bring verwydering, haat bring die dood, haat maak dat jy later moet vlug.

Versoening is gewoonlik ’n proses wat verloop vanaf die argument of onmin wat die verwydering gebring het, tot daar uiteindelik versoening plaasvind. Belangrike elemente in die versoeningsproses is:

. Selfondersoek – vra jouself af watter aandeel het jy gehad in die onmin. Ondersoek jou eie motiewe. . Vergifnis. . Kommunikasie. . Jy moet verskoning aanbied en jy moet ook verskoning aanvaar. . Toewyding aan die herstelde verhouding.

Elemente wat versoening verhinder, is haat en bitterheid; teleurstelling; woede; emosionele letsels; onvergewensgesindheid en eie ego.

Versoening is soms baie moeilik. Maar selfs in van die moeilikste omstandighede is dit soms tog moontlik. Die bekende geval van Amy Biehl, ’n Amerikaanse student, wat op 25 Augustus 1993 in Gugulethu in Kaapstad vermoor is, is ’n voorbeeld van versoening. In 1998 is amnestie aan die vier moordenaars verleen en is hulle uit die tronk vrygelaat. Die Biehl-ouerpaar het die uitspraak gesteun, en in ’n gebaar

“Met die Adopt a Matriculant-projek help ons nie net die studente met finansiële probleme nie, maar ons help hulle ook met emosionele ondersteuning,” sê Geraldine Pretorius van Kuilsrivier en lid van dié projek, wat in 2009 deur lede van die gemeenskap begin is.

“Gedurende Hoërskool Sarepta se voedingskema het ons die behoefte vir leiding onder matriekstudente geïdentifiseer,” sê Dawn Roode, ’n gemeenskapsleier.

In 2011 het Pretorius ’n matriekstudent, Letitia Mouton, deur die projek “aangeneem”.

Mentors help studente deur te sorg dat skoolgeld betaal word, ouers geraadpleeg word as dit kom by emosionele ondersteuning van die kind, studente elke maand die nodige toiletware het, hul vordering in die skool gemonitor word en hulle aangemoedig word om hard te leer.

“Sy het my geleer om hard te werk en om altyd te probeer om my ouers trots te maak,” sê Letitia. Met Pretorius se hulp en leiding het Letitia haar sokkies opgetrek en baie

hard studeer vir haar graad 12-eindeksamen.

“Ek het met goeie punte geslaag en gaan volgende jaar by Northlink-kollege aansoek doen,” sê Letitia.

Vir Pretorius is haar rol as mentor vir die jeug baie belangrik.

“Ek het Letitia aangeneem as my eie kind en vir my het dit nie hier geëindig nie. Ek mentor haar nog steeds want sy het hulp nodig om nie die pad byster te raak nie. Mentors moet empatie hê en hulle moet verstaan dat hierdie kinders al deur baie traumatiese ervaringe is en dat hulle liefde en aanvaarding nodig het.”

Met die projek beoog die gemeenskap om kinders te help om bo hul omstandighede uit te styg en om ’n sukses van hul lewe te maak.

“Ek wil ook net baie dankie sê vir al my familielede wat gehelp het om Letitia se skoolfooie te betaal,” sê Pretorius.

“Ons wil graag al die kinders help, maar ons het hulp nodig. Ons vra die publiek om na vore te kom en aan te bied om hierdie kinders te help,” sê Roode.

Khaya Kiddies Campus and Baby Hotel in Kuilsrivier het verlede naweek hul jaarlikse sportdag by die Wes-Kaapse Sportskool se terrein gehou.

’n Groen­spanmaat, Josh­Lee de Koker, ploeg neer in die hardloop­wedren terwyl sy ander spanmaats, Avuyele Jonas, Aphiwe Jonas, Phendule Maneli en Jayden Adams hom verbysteek.

“Die kinders het die dag vreeslik baie geniet. Met ’n vertoning van klassieke motors en allerhande tradisionele en prettige sportaktiwiteite het ons die kinders en hul ouers heel dag vermaak,” sê Willy Matthys, een van die eienaars van die kleuterskool.

Kleintjies van 2 jaar tot graad R, ouers, oumas, oupas en die personeel het almal aan die dag se sportaktiwiteite deelgeneem.

Daar was ’n sakresies, ’n tolletjiebrei-kompetisie, allerhande spoedwedrenne en ’n hoela-hoep-kompetisie.

Een van die hoogtepunte was die klassieke motors, onder meer ’n 1937-Plymouth, 1941-Chevrolettrok, 1958-Opel Rekord, 1958-Chevrolet Apache-bakkie, 1972 Elcamino V8-bakkie en ’n 1975-Chevrolet 4100.

“Ons is regtig baie dankbaar vir Andrew Cloete en Tubby Hendricks wat die voertuie tot ons beskikking gestel het asook die Wes-Kaapse Sportskool vir die gebruik van hul terrein.

“Baie dankie aan ons ouers vir hul teenwoordigheid by die geleentheid asook die personeel van Khaya Kiddies vir hul harde werk met die voorbereiding van die kleinspan,” het Matthys by die geleentheid aan TygerBurger gesê.

Slow start to recycling ESMÉ ERASMUS

With only 55 percent of residents taking part in the City’s Green Bin project, a Recycling -Green Expo is presented on Tuesday 13 March from 10:00 to 19:00 in the Durbanville Town Hall to inform residents.

The expo is presented by community organisations in collaboration with WastePlan and the city’s solid waste department.

The refuse recycling programme Think Twice kicked off in the northern suburbs in August last year.

About 44 000 households in the areas north of the N1 – from Bellville east of the Tygerberg Hills to Durbanville, Brackenfell and Kraaifontein and up to, but excluding the Kraaifontein smallholdings – were invited to take part and collect their green lid bin from their closest municipal offices.

But sadly only 55 percent of households have collected their bins.

“We are privileged in the northern areas to have been selected,” said Danetta Smit, excouncillor who is concerned about the lack of interest among residents.

“Where schools, churches and community organisations have promoted the separation and recycling of waste, the response has been excellent,” she said.

“But residents in some retirement complexes do not have space for a recycling bin, or do not have enough waste to justify another bin. Others need the body corporate to apply for bins,” Smit said.

“With the expo we want to increase awareness, demonstrate and educate all on how to recycle and minimise waste,” she said.

Officials from the solid waste department will be on hand to process applications and iron out problems. The department, in conjunction with Wasteplan, will hold the main exhibition from 10:00 to 19:00.

They will each have video shows and exhibitions to show why separated waste is so much better. The different materials will be on display and effective recycling demonstrated.

A few entrepeneurs will exhibit their Waste to Art. It will also be for sale.

There will also be a section where residents will display their worm farms, bokashi composting bins, as well as composting of organic material by using enzymes.

Elma Pollard, editor of The Green Times Magazine, will present talks in the afternoon. There will be a live Zibi show between 15:00 to 16:00 aimed at children.

At 18:00 a fashion show of outfits made of recycled materials will be presented.

Die idee is dat provinsiale regeringsbystand die produktiwiteit en mededingendheid van jou onderneming (en dié van ander) sal verhoog – en dat dit in ruil groei en werkskepping sal bevorder. Die fonds is daarop gemik om van hulp te wees in areas soos produktiwiteitsverbetering, navorsing en ontwikkeling, opleiding, eiendomsregte, markstudies en behoeftes in marktoegang, en innoverende idees en voorstelle.

Maar onthou net: die sukses al dan nie van jou aansoek sal van vier dinge afhang: • Die aansoekvorm moet vergesel wees van ’n voorstel wat verduidelik hoe ondersteuning van die regering die produktiwiteit van jou onderneming sal verhoog • Jy sal ’n vennootskap met ten minste een ander onderneming moet aangaan • Vir jou aansoek om suksesvol te wees, moet jy dit saam met die regering mede-finansier – Rand-vir-Rand • Die aansoek kan nie vir die vestiging van ’n nuwe onderneming of entiteit wees nie.

Fresh and healthy pasta Fresh Rosa Tomato and Tuna Pasta Arrive home at 18:00. Dinner on the table at 18:30. Tuck into a fully balanced meal-in-a-bowl – packed with protein, carbohydrates, good oils plus lots of essential vitamins and minerals. Does this sound too good to be true? Not if you make this quick and colourful pasta, crammed with fresh flavours and goodness.

The recipe secret: you only cook the pasta, not the sauce.

This recipe is heart-friendly, diabetic-friendly, gluten-free (if you’re gluten-intolerant, use gluten-free pasta), dairy-free and egg-free (if you’re allergic to eggs, use egg-free pasta).

100g – 120g (approximately) good-quality uncooked tagliatelle, fettuccine or spaghetti – enough to yield 500ml (2 cups) cooked pasta 1 x 170g can solid tuna or tuna

chunks in oil 1 x 200g punnet ripe, red Rosa or cherry tomatoes, halved lengthwise ½ medium-sized red onion, thinly sliced 10 black olives, pitted and coarsely chopped 10ml (2 tsp) freshly crushed garlic 20ml (4 tsp) olive oil salt and milled black pepper fresh basil leaves (shredded or left whole if leaves are small), or Italian parsley (chopped), or small wild rocket leaves (left whole) Fill a pot with enough water to cook the pasta. Bring to the boil.

Drain the tuna. Reserve 20ml (4 tsp) of the tuna oil. Coarsely flake the tuna. Set aside. In a shallow bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, olives, garlic, olive oil and reserved tuna oil.

Season with salt and black pepper and leave to rest. Add the pasta to the boiling water. Boil uncovered until al dente. Drain.

Tip hot pasta into a serving bowl. Spoon the tomato mixture, flaked tuna and fresh herbs on top of the pasta.

Toss well, season with salt and black pepper and serve immediately. If need be, add a little more olive oil.

Carnival spirit alive in the Mother City The annual Cape Town Carnival ignites the Mother City for the third time on Saturday 24 March at the Fanwalk in Somerset Street in Green Point.

The event will feature spectacular art, music and dance. The Fanwalk opens with street performers at 17:00 and the Carnival Parade starts at 20:00.

Verbetering van ons gemeenskappe

Twee derdes van die totale begroting word aan GESONDHEID en ONDERWYS spandeer Onderwys Ons sal ons inisiatiewe versterk om geletterdheid en syferkundigheid in laerskole te verbeter; die aantal matrieks wat matriek slaag, te laat toeneem, en die algemene gehalte van hul eindeksamen te verbeter; die aantal onderpresterende skole te verminder; elke kind vanaf Graad 1 tot Graad 12 met ’n teksboek vir elke vak te voorsien; en topgehalte Graad R-programme by gewone openbare skole te voorsien.

U moet seker maak u kind werk hard om te slaag.

Ons sal maatskaplike insluiting bevorder en armoede verminder deur: • Befondsing van maatskaplike ontwikkelingsprojekte wat fokus op kinders, die jeug, ouer persone en middel misbruik.

• Fokus te plaas op skoolsport, na-skoolse programme en biblioteke in armer gemeenskappe.

• Bevordering van veiligheid deur sekuriteitsvennootskappe.

• Vermindering van sterftes wat deur padongelukke veroorsaak word.

U moet u gesondheid oppas en nooit drink en bestuur nie.

Die totale begroting vir 2012/13 is R39.885 biljoen.

Money needed to manage traffic While thousands of motorists in the northern suburbs are at the end of their tether fighting the peak hour traffic in the suburbs, the handful of traffic officers must be at the end of their tether too.

The City of Cape Town blames the severe shortage of traffic officers on a lack of funds but promises that the problem will be addressed over a period of five years, during which 1 000 more officers will be appointed in the departments of traffic, law enforcement, metro and fire and rescue.

They also say they took over a “crippled” service from the former local government and claim they have made big strides since then to remedy the situation.

But the question remains whether enough has been done in the time given?

Taking into account the hundreds of thousands of traffic offences being registered from month to month, it could be deduced that law enforcement is failing. The number of fines is increasing and so is the amount of money raked in by the city, but is the “anarchy” on the roads being purposefully addressed?

On 28 March, at the next council sitting the item will once again appear on the agenda, after a budget request was put forward. One can only hope that the ruling party will see the wood for the trees and deliver on the promises they keep making.

Wetstoepassing nie deurlopend Ek wil net graag hierby aansluit en my kommentaar gee oor die berig (“Maybe not such a good idea”, TygerBurger 29 Februarie).

Ek is beslis dit daarmee eens dat hierdie baie beslis ’n onveilige praktyk is en nie behoort te gebeur nie.

Maar ek wil ook vir Merle vra: “Hoeveel skoolkinders ry met ’n maat voor op die handvatsel van ’n fiets en/of met ’n groot rugsak op die pypraam? Hoeveel jong kinders gee ’n ander ’n saamrygeleentheid op ’n motorfiets wat nie daarvoor bedoel is nie? Hoeveel motorfietsryers ry daagliks op ons paaie sonder die nodige beskermingstoerusting? En so kan ek aangaan.

Ek sal werklik wil sien dat deurlopende wetstoepassing op alle terreine toegepas word. Wanneer word daar op ons deur-

paaie spoedkamaras opgestel en/of gebruik wat voertuie stop en beboet wat oor hul gemagtigde spoed van 80km/h, 100km/h ry? Nee, dit gebeur nie want dan moet daar te veel “gesif” word om voertuie wat gemagtig is om vinniger te ry, nie onwettig te beboet nie.

Ek meen, wat is onveiliger, ’n groot voertuig, wat net 80km/h mag ry maar teen 120km/h + aanjaag, ’n oorlaaide taxi wat net 100km/h mag ry, maar ook teen 120km/h + ry, of die normale motorvoertuig wat teen 130km/h ry?

Ek dink nie daar is een regdenkende persoon wat nie die antwoord op hierdie vraag sal ken nie. Maar nee, verminder die spoed op ons paaie!

Fietsryers nié die probleem Ek verwys graag na ’n onlangse leser wat noem dat “fietsry op ons paaie malligheid is”.

Hoe selfsugtig kan ’n mens dan nou wees?

Fietsryers probeer gesonde lewens lei, probeer hul liefde vir die buitelewe uitleef en probeer ’n voorbeeld stel vir hul kinders van hoe om gesond en aktief te wees.

Ons kinders sit nie dag na dag voor ’n TV of rekenaar nie, maar het ook ’n belangstelling in sport.

As motoriste maar net kan hou by die spoedgrense, hul oë op die pad hou, nie SMS/ e-pos/bel terwyl hulle bestuur nie en stop by stoptekens, sal die paaie veilig wees vir fietsryers.

Maar omdat motoriste nie veilig kan bestuur nie, stadige voertuie van die pad af probeer druk, oor die geel streep ry (wat vir noodgevalle bedoel is), verbysteek wanneer dit nie veilig is nie en nog vele meer, is die paaie nou gevaarlik vir sportliefhebbers.

Ek raak só vies as ek binne die spoedgrens probeer ry omdat ek kinders in my motor het wie se veiligheid ek in ag moet neem, en ’n idioot kom sit agter my en probeer my wegdruk.

Spoedgrense word internasionaal gebruik en is nie uitgedink deur iemand wat niks beters gehad het om te doen nie.

Please think very carefully about the following: nobody ever stops at any stop signs, and it is no excuse that you go over slowly. In fact few motorists go over it slowly!

For the past few years I have seen motorists go over stop-streets at a high speed, with cellphone in one hand (and showing a finger with the other if you dare to show them that they did not stop), putting on makeup, with a dog on the (driver’s) lap, etc.

Worrying is the verbal or physical abuse if you point it out, but please remember that if it happens to you, you can (must) lay a criminal charge of crimen injuria/assault (a threat is attempted assault).

The most worrying fact now is that even red traffic lights are being ignored – and I mean as in no cars are coming, so I will go! The thinking is: “If I am not caught at stop-streets, then nothing is going to happen if I skip a red light!”

Even more worrying is that scholars see it and do it themselves. Why not, their parents are doing it.

And what about the wives and girlfriends? They also do it.

The SAPS and traffic officers are nowhere to be seen, so what to do? Simple: children and schools must step in and say: “No more, stop where you must stop!”

Talk to your parents!

But in case the SAPS and traffic do something they must go the whole hog and implement the (New York PD) Broken Glass Policy: stop the motorist, do a thorough check of the vehicle and then issue a summons, and you can be assured it will not happen again soon, as time is the main reason for skipping stop-streets and traffic-lights.

The above is applicable all over our country, but it can be seen every day at the following stop-streets and trafficlights in Welgemoed and Kenridge: The right lane of Jip de Jager that is just meant for Welgemoed Primary is used as a racetrack to cut into the left lane (a camera is a must here), Jip de Jager/Pandoer, Jip de Jager/Kommissaris, Jip de Jager/Van Ribeeckshof, Door De Kraal/Greenfields, Greenfields/Van Riebeeck, etc.

The popular SPCA Woefie-Wandel will take place at Nitída Cellars in the Durbanville Wine Valley on Sunday, 18 March 2012 at 09:00.

Walkers can choose either the familyfriendly 2km meander through low-lying vineyards or the longer 4km route with breathtaking views of Table Mountain and Robben Island.

Afterwards, walkers and their dogs can relax and enjoy a picnic under umbrellas on the banks of the estate’s dam.

“We are committed to discovering new ways to help pets lead healthier, happier and longer lives; this extends beyond just what we feed our animals and reaches into the realm of how we interact with them and spend quality time with them. Puppies under four months are not permitted to take part and owners of large breed dogs 18 months or younger, should consider walking a shorter distance, as extended walking can put undue pressure on delicate skeletal structures and muscles and can impact their growth plates and affect joint development”, says Juan August, SPCA events co-ordinator.

Water points will be available along the routes.

Public artworks to Infect the City The Africa Centre’s fifth annual Infecting the City Public Art Festival takes to the streets and public spaces of Cape Town this week.

The festival is curated by Jay Pather, director of the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts at UCT. Transcendent, beautiful, challenging, ethereal and always free, this year’s festival hosts a compelling mix of new and re-imagined works.

This year the festival will introduce South Africans to a multidisciplined range of public artworks from highly considered international and local artists, some of whom are bringing their exceptional works home after critical acclaim from other parts

of the world.

The programme will include installations, dance, poetry, theatre, performance art and music.

The artworks will take place at various points and locations across Cape Town’s city centre.

Infecting the City aims to give South Africans access to worldclass public art, for free.

As part of the Africa Centre’s development programme, “Arts Aweh!”, Infecting the City will transport 400 learners from schools across greater Cape Town to the City Centre to engage and interact with the festival and its artists.

Muaythai clash Muaythai fans should not miss the action-packed Year of the Dragon event at the GrandWest Grand Arena on Saturday.

The International UMF and Dragon Legends will present a full programme which will include several title bouts. The main title fight will be contested by South Africa and Thailand. Proceeds from the event will go towards the Muaythai Against Drugs Foundation (MAD) in South Africa.

Charl Michael Visser (8), ’n graad 2-leerling van Laerskool Kenridge, se harde werk is vinnig besig om resultate op te lewer.

Charl Michael het reeds 500 oefenrondtes gedoen op Killarney vir sy deelname aan die Westelike Provinsie se kadet-knortjorkampioenskappe vir 5-8 jariges.

“Charl Michael is van kleins af baie lief vir motors en het op 4-jarige ouderdom reeds al die motors wat ’n mens in ’n parkeerarea kon sien, se kentekens geken.

“Ons het vir hom ’n kadet-gokart gekoop in 2010. Hy het verlede jaar as ’n beginner op Killarney afgeskop en het aan die einde van die jaar in die laaste wedren ’n derde plek vir die seisoen behaal.

“Ons is baie trots op sy Drywer van die Dag-toekenning wat hy ontvang het,” sê pa Charl.

Hy het reeds op 11 Februarie die vinnigste kwalifiserende tyd opgestel asook al drie amptelike wedrenne van die dag gewen en die prys ontvang as die algehele wenner van die dag met die vinnigste rondtetyd. Met so ’n spoggerige begin in die nuwe seisoen word groot dinge van die jongman verwag.

Sy pa Charl is sy wedren-ingenieur, sy toerusting-ingenieur en sien om na sy algehele welstand op ’n wedrendag, wat genoeg harde werk en naelkouery behels.

Sy volgende wedren is op 24 Maart.

Die Hoërskool Stellenberg se eerste krieketspan bly nou maar eenmaal die HS Tygerberg se tier.

Verlede Woensdag het die Stellies die Parowiete vir die derde jaar agtereenvolgends in die eindstryd van die Sammy Bloch/Durbell-Apteke-uitklopkompetisie geklop.

Maar bygesê: hierdie slag was dit naelskraap.

In antwoord op Stellenberg se 128 lopies was die Tiere goed op pad na ’n sege – totdat die druk te veel geword het vir hulle en hul 125 lopies net-net tekortgeskiet het vir ’n oorwinning. M. Fourie (63) het ’n leeueaandeel in Stellenberg se oorwinning gehad, terwyl Tian Jacobs (4/20) en Dewald Els (47) die beste vir Tygerberg vertoon het.

Asof die HS Tygerberg ’n voorliefde vir naelkou-uitslae het, het hy Saterdag in die jongste reeks Peter Buttner-Sport-ligawedstryde die span van D.F. Malan (196) met een lopie geklop!

Deno van Rensburg (56), Johann Mey (54) en Sammy Fransman (4/36) was die Tiere se staatmakers terwyl Wian Joubert (65) so byna vir die besoekers die knoop deurgehak het.

In ander o.19A-wedstryde was De Kuilen (138) met 23 lopies te sterk vir Durbanville, Edgemead (104/3) het HTS Bellville met 7 paaltjies verniel, Stellenberg (201) het in ’n opwindende wedstryd HS Bellville (191) naelskraap met 10 lopies geklop, en Brackenfell (120) was met 25 lopies te sterk vir Fairmont.

Die uitblinkers in hierdie wed-

stryde was Craig Barros (De Kuilen, 50), Wouter Whitmore (De Kuilen, 4/12), Damon Watt (Edgemead, 4/9), Matthew Duncan (Stellenberg, 83), Danie Visser (Stellenberg, 4/29), Jean Strydom (HS Bellville, 64 en 3/13) en R. Sparks (Fairmont, 6/36).

In die Francor Bakkery-liga vir o.16-spanne het De Kuilen met 64 lopies teen The Settlers gewen, en in die TygerBurger-liga vir o.15-spanne was die volgende spanne almal aan die wenkant: Edgemead (t D.F. Malan), Fairmont (t Brackenfell), De Kuilen (t Durbanville) en Tygerberg (t Chesterhouse).

Niel Oosthuizen (Brackenfell) was met sy 55* en 4/16 (wat ’n driekuns ingesluit het) die groot uitblinker in die L & L Buttner-ligawedstryde vir o.14-spanne.

Sports fest packs ’em in The 2012 Century City Sports Festival attracted a record number of participants over the weekend with the signature event of the three day festival – the 10km Century City Express road race – boasting a field of more than 1 800 runners.

The 10km Century City Express was won by Lindikhaya Mtangayi of Mr Price Western Cape in a time of 30 minutes and 11 seconds. He was followed closely by Nkosinathi Madyo (Nedbank) in a time of 30:14 with Mthandazo Qhina (Nedbank) in third place with a time of 30:21.

The first woman home was Zintle Xiniwe (Mr Price) in a time of 36:10, with Bulelwa Simae (Nedbank) in second place with a time of 36: 39 followed by Ulrica Stander (New Balance) in 36:55.

Three times Comrades Winner, Vladimir Kotov, who runs in Century City colours, was the first Mas-

ters over 50 runner home in a time of 33:37.

Accepting his prize, Mtangayi said he now had his sights firmly set on winning the Two Oceans Half Marathon.

The Century City Sports Festival is aimed at both corporate teams and individual participants and provides both participatory and spectator sports including a 2,5km FunRun/Walk which attracted over 350 participants, junior and senior touch rugby tournaments, five-a-side corporate soccer competitions, kermesse road circuit Cycling races, junior and senior canoe marathons, Western Province trials for canoe polo, a dragon boat regatta and an under-11 six-a-side cricket tournament.

Jean-Mari Kellerman and Dominic Seeber (both 16) are the first gymnasts in the history of the ACS Gymnastics Club in Monte Vista to receive full South African colours.

They will compete in the Africa International championship held in Tunisia in April.

Voorts het Brandon Philander (3/35) sy bydrae gelewer. Vir Edgemead het Wayne Richardson (52), Brett Mason (44) en Simon Blake (5/112) die beste vertoon.

Durbanville (197/8) het Primrose (88) teen die toue, maar in hul opvolgbeurt skop die besoekers mooi vas en het tans 50/0.

Wesley Thomas (62), Mark de Stadtler (45), Morné Heyneke (5/25) en Pieter Erasmus (4/20) was die manne wat die Durbies goed laat wegspring het. Noordelikes-Goodwood (223/8) staan sterk teen Langa (76 en 108/2) ná uitstekende bydraes deur R.Lewis (123*), K.Qekani (48), W.de Kempenaar (5/270 en L.Dixon (3/14). As it stand now, 343 high schools and 417 primary schools actively participated last year.

“Sanesa is acknowledged by the South African Equestrian Federation (SAEF) and by Sascoc. Sanesa is also the only official platform recognised by the government.

“The main reason for the steady increase in numbers we have had over the years is that there is no annual fee, thus making it very accessible for anyone to compete. There is only a fee on show days,” said Wendy Hendrickse of the Western Province committee.

School equestrian is run on the same basis as other school sports with learners between the age of four to 18 years competing on provincial, regional and national levels.

The different disciplines include jumping, dressage, equitation, showing, endurance, vaulting, saddle seat, western riding and western mounted games. Eventing is in the final stages of being incorporated.

“We are preparing for four qualifier shows in the Western Cape ending with our inter-regional qualifier taking place in George from 9 to 12 August.

“The first qualifier takes place on 17 to 18 March at the Durbanville Racecourse (Serenity). The second qualifier will be held in Stellenbosch on 21 to 22 April with the third one on 19 to 20 at the Durbanville Racecourse. A venue for the fourth and final qualifier is yet to be announced,” said Hendrickse.
