) Cops warn of increase in cloning
My bank card copied! CERRIN HENDRICKS
“The following day there were two messages on my phone from the bank, one was a withdrawal of R2 900 and the second was R610. When I got to the bank, they said my credit card had been cloned.” This is what happened to Dirk Coetzee, a Kuils River resident. His credit card was cloned after a man
offered to help him at an ATM, which he had “fixed” to copy Coetzee’s bank details and card pin number. There are several types of scams out there to get your pin number and details, but nearly all of them involve a stranger helping you draw your money, and although credit card cloning was a trend in the past, people are now learning to listen to all the warnings out there. “There was a time in Kuils River
when there was a slew of credit card cloning cases, but with the public becoming more and more aware of their surroundings there have been fewer instances of this,” said Capt Isaac Van Niekerk of the Kuils River police. Another thing to look out for is anything at all odd about an ATM machine, and location. “Never use hidden ATMs where you are out of sight of the public. The convenience is outweighed by
the danger of being in a vulnerable position should there be someone who wants to rob you,” said Van Niekerk. In the event that you are forced to enter your pin, there is a way to turn the situation around. “If you are in a situation where you are forced to enter your pin, punch in the number backwards. “This causes the machine to signal any security company which works for the mall or centre which
the ATM is linked to, and locks the ATM,” said Van Niekerk. “Afterwards, you should immediately stop the card through phoning your bank’s hotline, which will be a 24/7 service. “The bank will then run an investigation to see that the card has actually been used by someone other than you, and return the money to the account once they are satisfied that there has been no fraud committed by the account holder.”
