s a means of commemorating its 60th year in existence, the Kuils River Library hosted a birthday party on Saturday, which was attended by local residents, library staff and the City’s Mayoral Committee member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith.

Senior librarian Wilhelmina Whitman expressed great joy at the turnout at the celebrations.

“I didn’t think so many people would show up,” said Whitman.

She confirmed that the planning of the celebrations took six months and that the organisation Friends of the Library was a great help throughout the planning stages.

“They really played a major role in the planning and execution of our celebrations,” said Whitman.

Residents and library staff were entertained by a boereorkes and were seen to be enjoying boerewors rolls and various games. Children in attendance also played board games inside the library with children’s librarian, Marindie Maddison.

The library was officially opened on 25 March 1957, although a group of residents had already been circulating a small collection of books among themselves for decades before then.

It was in 1952 that the library committee realised the need for a dedicated building and decided to build a library. They raised funds and purchased two plots on the corner of Carinus and Van der Stel streets, where the library still stands today.

In 1956 the library committee donated R5000 and the two plots of land to the municipality.

On 25 March 1957, the new Cape Dutch style building was inaugurated and on 1 April 1957 the Kuils River Library joined the Cape Provincial Library Services.

The library played host to the first training course for librarians in the province in May 1957.

Neighbouring towns did not have libraries, and residents of Bellville, Durbanville, Brackenfell and Kraaifontein came to make use of Kuils River Library.

Since its opening, the Cape Dutch building with its gable roof, which houses the library, has been extended twice.

ayment on more than 110 350 overdue municipal accounts – translating to about R594 million – would go a long way towards helping the City with the current drought crisis.

In a statement released last week, the City said it had already sent 105 179 SMS notices for the 110 350 overdue accounts amounting to R594 million as at 18 October.

Total payments received though the SMS initiative have brought in an amount of R194 million, according to the statement.

The City called on all debtors, other than those receiving indigent assistance, to pay up or to face debt management actions.

These actions have been intensified, especially against those who can pay but choose not to, and also against frequent defaulters,

according to the statement.

The City maintains that for the period ended 30 September, their collection rate was 95.24% due to an effort to drive sustainability and the culture of payment, working hard to maintain a 12-month moving average payment ratio for rates and services over the last year.

According to the statement, the City’s collection rate has also been an area of focus that has yielded results, and the City’s current billings are over R2.6 billion per month. “Debt management actions are being intensified, especially against those who are able to pay but choose not to do so, and also against the frequent defaulters.

Hoping that the debt will go away or ignoring the problem is not the answer, especial-

ly as there is help on offer,” said the City’s Mayco member for finance, Johan van der Merwe. The City introduced the new SMS and email campaign to remind account holders to pay their monthly invoices by the pending due date if they have not yet done so. It also encourages those in arrears to pay up if they can or to approach the City to discuss payment options and settle their arrear debt over an agreed period of time.

The City’s Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy makes allowance for seniors or indigent residents to approach the City and access the range of benefits based on their total household income.

Residents are encouraged to visit their nearest municipal office for advice and guidance in respect of accounts in arrears.

Sport School celebrates 10th The Western Cape Sport School will be celebrating 10 years of existence with a Tenth Anniversary Carnival.

The carnival will be hosted on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 November at the school campus in Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River.

The carnival will feature Wayne McKay as MC, as well as performances by Loukmaan Adams, YoungstaCPT, SK Baleni, Karin Kortje, Zami Mdingi, 4REAL, The Rockets, Nur Abrahams, Waseef Piekaan, Jazzimandi, Kinders VD Ses, Jazz Yard Academy and many more.

‘Minimum sentences simply don’t work’ HARRIET BOX

T

here is no evidence that mandatory minimum sentences work, and growing evidence that they are not effec-

tive.

So said Justice Edwin Cameron of the South African Constitutional Court when he delivered the third annual Dean’s Distinguished Lecture at the UWC’s Faculty of Law on Thursday 19 October 2017.

Cameron went on to say that despite this evidence, South Africa stubbornly persists with mandatory minimum sentences – largely because the State wants to persuade a “terrified” public that it is tough on crime.

According to the dean of law at UWC, Professor Bernard Martin, these annual lectures provide a platform for South Africa’s leading legal minds to explore some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Cameron’s lecture, “Imprisoning the Nation: Minimum Sentences in South Africa”, made a strong case for the scrapping of such minimum sentences for most low-level nonviolent crimes – a view not always popular with the South African population, he warned, though he stressed that long sentences for violent crimes are most necessary.

Minimum sentences have not only proven ineffective, but have also had pernicious effects on the correctional system, on offenders, and on society in general, he said.

“Minimum sentences offer us a false promise,” Cameron said.

“They offer us a belief that we are actually doing something about crime.”

The toll has been disastrous, Cameron noted.

For one, overcrowding in South African prisons has led to a range of human rights violations, perpetrated in the name of its citizens.

It also disproportionately affects black and coloured offenders.

And, he argued, mandatory minimum sentences fail to meet all four rationales

used in the justification thereof: deterrence (offenders are deterred by the certainty of punishment rather than the severity of the sentence), incapacitation (locking up less dangerous criminals for long periods does not reduce crime), rehabilitation (this is simply not done, in Cameron’s experience of visiting South African prisons) and retribution (despite its strong emotional and historic appeal, vengeance has many shortcomings).

Harsh minimum sentencing, Cameron explained, was introduced into South African law in 1997 by the Criminal Law Amendment Act, a “tragic mistake” that has “plagued” the country for the past 20 years.

The law was put on the books largely to placate a terrified public as violent crime rose sharply over the country’s transition to democracy, according to him.

“Struggling to cement its legitimacy amid an outcry over crime, the State and politicians felt not only compelled to act, but more importantly to be seen to act,” said Cameron.

There are ways to reduce incarcerations in South Africa, but there are “no shortcuts” and “no magic bullets”, said Cameron.

Firstly, mandatory minimum sentences for low-level non-violent crime – mostly drug-related – should immediately be scrapped, he urged.

He proposed the establishment of a sentencing council, which had previously been mooted in an effort to come up with a more efficient system.

The mentally ill should be treated rather than imprisoned; finally, pretrial detention practices should be overhauled – and locking up those who cannot afford bail is simply unfair.

We are all terrified of crime, noted Cameron in closing – and often justifiably so.

But it must be recognised that minimum sentencing – “pernicious, misguided and futile” – has not reduced the levels of crime in our society.

he River Challenge obstacle race took place on the grounds of the Jan Kriel School on Saturday.

The event over a 5km track with 19 obstacles, which participants had to negotiate by climbing over, crawling under or going through them, was a fundraiser for the Kuils River Youth Trust, an NGO that focuses on the needs of school-going children within the greater Kuils River area.

Chantel van Zyl and daughter Lisa from Kuils River participated in the Family Fun category.

This is primarily done by placing a social worker in every school in the area.

The salaries of these social workers are carried jointly by the school governing bodies and the trust.

The fun-filled event catered for all, with groups starting in four different categories: Corporate, Competitive, Leader Learners (school teams) and Family Fun.

He said the City of Cape Town is in the process of putting in place different interventions, including the installation of a desalination plant.

“As the subcouncil, we are also rolling out title deeds to our communities. This is a historic moment for many families, as it

affirms the right to the land on which they live.”

Booi handed over five title deeds to residents in wards 19 and 108. On Thursday he also handed over a wheelchair to an elderly resident of Silversands. He also pointed out the rollout of the Basic Antenatal Care programme at the Sarepta Clinic on 5 October and the launch of the new Walking Bus programme, also in Sarepta, on 17 October.

Futhermore, he said an Open Day registration drive will be held during the same week to support ECD centres in the area.

Woman’s body found The body of an unidentified woman was found by community members in Nooiensfontein on Thursday (19 October).

“The body was found with no clothes from the waist down. She was wearing a black or navy T-shirt, pink zip-up jersey or jacket, black sandals with a triangle shape on the top of the foot, with black or navy blue striped jeans lying next to her. On the calf of her right leg is a tattoo reading “BLOMZ”,” says a police spokesperson.

Police are investigating a case of murder and are asking the public for help in identifying the woman.

ouncillors from subcouncils 22 and 21 handed over title deeds at the subcouncil meetings held on Monday 16 October and Wednesday 18 October respectively.

Two residents from Kleinvlei received their title deeds on Monday at the council chambers in the Kuils River municipal building from ward 17 councillor, Sharlaine Oerson. Both recipients, Francis Pietersen and Niko Sophie Morabe, were excited to finally be home owners.

In his speech at the subcouncil 21 meeting, the chairperson, Councillor Malusi Booi, said that the rolling out of title deeds is “a historic moment for many families, as it affirms their right to the land on which they live.”

Wesbank resident Wilhelmina Paulse received her title deed from Booi and ward 19 councillor, Ricardo Saralina, on Wednesday. Both councillors congratulated Paulse, with Saralina saying that it had been quite a journey getting to the point of handing over Paulse’s title deed.

New NHW for Brantwood The community of Brantwood, which forms part of the Kuils River CPF, is launching its own neighbourhood watch.

The Kuils River community, and especially Brantwood residents, are invited to the first public meeting to be held to elect an executive committee.

A chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, treasurer and project manager, along with a few key supporting positions, will be elected.

The meeting will take place on 2 November from 19:00 to 20:00 at Suzie’s Coffee Shop on the corner of Ash and Joubert streets.

Golden Games: Seniors from Wesbank participated in the Golden Games hosted by the Department of Sport and Recreation on Thursday 19 October in honour of Older Persons’ Month.

The games were held at the Charles Morkel Stadium in the Strand. According to Wesbank resident Edith van Wyk, who accompanied the 60 seniors, the seniors participated in various events, including ball games and running. The Wesbank seniors competed against, among others, seniors from Eerste River, Macassar, Bardale, Mfuleni and Happy Valley. “For many of the seniors it was their first time participating in the games. They had so much fun” says Van Wyk.

Shavathon in memory of my hero gran

My grandmother lost her battle with cancer 17 years ago ... but boy, did she put up a fight!

Gran would have turned 93 on Sunday 29 October – the very day that I and other members of the team from People’s Post (TygerBurger’s sister publication) will be taking part in our very first Shades of Pink shavathon and sprayathon as part of our #WeKTyger October campaign.

Having been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in its early stages and undergoing a hysterectomy, Gran spent seven years in remission before the cancer returned.

After a few years, and many rounds of radiation treatment and a wig or two later, her time with us came to an end – but not without leaving me with lifelong memories of what a “tough cookie” really looks like.

As a child, I don’t ever remember my gran as being sick.

She always carried herself with a strength and As a child, I grace that made it seem like nothing don’t ever could break her. many friends remember my The at her funeral that she gran as being insisted was never too sick to serve tea at sick ... church, and even in her last days she still had strong opinions on what the Proteas were doing wrong (and wouldn’t have minded telling them!).

Widowed in her 30s, Gran raised two daughters as a single parent working a full-time job – something almost unheard of in the 1950s and 60s. Hers is a strength that I’d like to believe is a family trait, along with an unusual sense of humour.

It’s probably this humour that I remember most during her illness – she even insisted she much preferred wearing a wig, after losing all her natural hair to her treatment, because she could simply toss it in the washing machine instead of wasting hours washing, rolling and setting her hair. As a tribute to my grandmother, and all those who have lost their fight, I’ll be lopping off my locks to donate them to Cansa to be made into a wig for someone fighting their own battle with cancer. It’s my hope that with even just a quarter of Gran’s strength, my small gift will give someone the strength to beat their illness. – Nicole McCain, senior journalist, People’s Post.

Sy sê Patricia de Lille meen niemand kan verwag om net ’n posisie te kry nie,

wat eintlik goeie raad vir die agbare burgemeester haarself is. Haar onderhoud met ’n joernalis van die Sunday Times ’n paar weke gelede, was belaglik en vol jakkalsdraaie oor die noodplan.

Met hul gepaardgaande gebrek aan krisisplanne, skaad dit net hul beeld.

Heimwee na ou dae se langarmdanse Na aanleiding van Willem Swart se brief (“Waar is al die orkeste tog?” 18/10): Wat hy daar geskryf het, het my hart sommer vinnig laat klop vanweë die pragtige herinneringe wat ek as ’n bejaarde dame van 89 jaar as ’n jong meisie beleef het.

Ek het grootgeword in Oos-Londen. My hele familie was baie lief vir boeremusiek en langarmdans. Jong mense van vandag weet glad nie hoe om hulself te geniet soos ons in daardie dae nie. Nou weet hulle net van TV-kyk en om met ’n selfoon te speel.

Vroeër het ons soms boeremusiek-programme op die TV en radio gekry, maar dit gebeur nie meer nie. Hoop die boeremusiek-orkeste kry weer lewe! Ek en my suster het in ons tienerjare in ’n boeremusiek-orkes gespeel – sy die ukelele en ek die banjo en trekklavier. Die leier het die konsertina en trekklavier gespeel, ’n seun was op die dromme, ’n meisie op die klavier en ’n vriend op kitaar.

Ons het Vrydag- en Saterdagaande musiek gemaak en langarm gedans dat die stof so staan. Boetie Kallis en sy orkes was ons gunsteling en ons gunstelingliedjies was “Sarie Marais”, “Suikerbossie” en die “Kalfiewals”.

En soos Willem sê, was die “Pall Jones” die hoogtepunt!

Dit was wonderlike, gelukkige dae. Wens ons kan dit

weer beleef.

Ek het op 31 Augustus ’n waterlek buite my erf per SMS aangemeld, aangesien die telefoonlyn vir ’n halfuur onbeantwoord was.

As individu wat moet werk om geld in te kry om vir heffings te betaal, het ek nie die tyd om te mors op so ’n ondoeltreffende inbelstelsel nie. My SMS is beantwoord met die bevestiging dat die waterlek ge-log is, met ’n verwysingsnommer en so ewe ’n thank you. Vandag is dit 21 Oktober en daar is nog geen teken dat daar ’n herstelpoging kom nie. Ek het vandag self modder weggegrawe om te sien of ek iets daaraan kan doen, maar die lek is aan die munisipaliteit se kant van my watermeter. Ek mag dus nie daaraan werk nie. Die beste wat ek kan doen, is om iets om die pyp te draai en vas te klamp terwyl ons wag vir die Stad Kaapstad – dít terwyl skoon drinkwater in die grond weg sypel. Ek kan nie wag vir die Stad Kaapstad om aangedrentel te kom, spreekwoordelike middelvinger in die lug, terwyl so baie mense probeer water spaar nie.

Ek het ook ’n middelvinger, en sal dit gebruik deur vir die Kaapse Party te stem in die volgende verkiesing.

Kudos for report on Kalkfontein Thank you for highlighting the issues in Kalkfontein in TygerBurger of 14 October

(“Sewage Scandal”).

I have heard many people from Kalkfontein expressing their gratitude to TygerBurger Kuils River for highlighting their plight with regard to the sewerage problems, cleaning of toilets and lack of refuse removal.

I would like to respond to comments made by Suzette Little.

She mentioned that the frequent blockages experienced are caused by misuse of the sewerage system and the prevalence of illegal connections into the system.

Little mentioned that the City of Cape Town Municipality has not received any reports of water supply interruptions.

She said the toilets highlighted in the photograph of the newspaper article do not have a water connection.

Those toilets service the shacks in that area.

She said she would liaise with the councillor to assist with a suitable water connection.

Since 2013 we have been highlighting the unbearable living conditions resulting from the sewerage problems, the cleaning of toilets and the lack of refuse collection in Kalkfontein.

Despite the response from the City, regrettably the status quo remains.

We note that there are municipal workers busy with construction activities.

It would be helpful if the scope and timetable of the sewerage upgrades and repairs could be communicated to the community. Mr Saralina, the ward counsellor, informed the community that part of the problem is of an engineering nature, namely that underground sewage pipes have collapsed and also that in some areas toilets are not connected to the main sewer line.

Bellville Pistol Club is on target ESMÉ ERASMUS

housands of shots were accurately fired at the 55th annual championships of the Western Province Pistol Association (WPPA) held recently at Bellville Pistol Club in Stikland.

Of those accurate shots, many were fired by shooters from the Bellville Pistol Club, who dominated the competition and raked in most of the medals and trophies.

“This type of shooting is based on accuracy and differs from disciplines where simply hitting a target is acceptable,” says Allen Brook, chairperson of the Bellville Pistol Club.

The championships, which took place from 12 to 14 October, were attended by 45 pistol shooters, mostly from the Cape Peninsula and Boland – from juniors aged 14 years to adults over 80 years.

They took part in the three main disciplines of target shooting: International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF), which is one-handed target shooting mainly for .22 pistols and air pistols; the National Pistol Association (NPA) for pistols and revolvers of 9mm and larger calibres; and a Precision Pistol Competition (PPC) for revolvers and pistols at distances from seven to 50 metres.

“All these events are shot within prescribed time limits during which a shooter must get his or her highest possible score on the targets,” Brook says.

Of the WPPA members, the overall champions were Chris-Mari Schreuder (17) from Kuils River (junior women’s category of Air Pistol), Jan Mostert (19) from Kuils River (junior men’s category of Air Pistol), Ronett Brook from Durbanville (women’s categories of ISSF and NPA), Michael Schmidt from Pinelands (men’s category of ISSF), and Darius Mostert from Brackenfell (men’s categories of NPA and PPC).

The rich history and successes of Bellville Pistol Club have also come under the spotlight with the championships being held at the club.

The club was started in March 1967 on the farm Sonstraal in Durbanville. The purpose was for members of the police to train women in the use of pistols. From 1961 to 1966, a total of 123 women were trained, two of whom earned their WP colours.

In dire need of a permanent range, they acquired temporary use of the farm Loevenstein, making use of a dam wall as a stop bank. They used this range from August 1962 until the end of 1966.

In March of 1967, the women participated in the WP championships for the first time, winning 23 cups. On 1 April they took part in the National Bisley and continued from there to the EP championships in April that year.

They also took part in annual postal shoots against Canada and Australia under the name “Barbarians”.

“The Loevenstein range was closed to be developed for housing, so the club was again forced to find ground for a new club. They then secured land in Durban Road, where McDonald’s is presently situated,” Brook says.

The new club was built and completed during 1967, and officially opened on 24 February 1968. During 1971 the club changed its name to “Bellville Pistoolklub”.

“In 1994, the club opened its new and improved facilities at its present site in Stikland, where it continues to grow from strength to strength,” Brook says.

“Bellville Pistol Club is of enormous value to residents in the northern suburbs. We have members with Springbok status, as well as provincial and national achievements,” he says.

Groot Phesantekraal a hidden gem

W

hile wandering far and wide in the Cape Winelands, travellers and wine lovers may well have overlooked a gem right in their midst: Groot Phesantekraal Farm, peacefully hidden on the outskirts of Durbanville.

Amid much fanfare, the farm last week launched their maiden Blanc de Blanc 2015, Cap Classique and Pinotage 2016, as well as vintages of their rebranded range of Groot Phesantekraal wines.

The launch took place in their beautifully restored restaurant, which is housed in a building constructed 250 years ago in 1767.

In fact, the family will soon be celebrating the 320th anniversary of their historic farm, which dates back to 1698.

Once a reposing farm with rolling wheat fields, vineyards and grazing cows and sheep, this historic estate has seen a quiet evolution, elevating it to the top of any wine explorer’s to-do list this summer.

Fourth-generation owners, André and Ronelle Brink, are in celebration mode at Groot Phesantekraal – celebrating 120 years of Brink family ownership, along with the launch of the new wines. Their 2017 Sauvignon Blanc recently won a Veritas Double Gold and a prestigious place among the 2017 FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blancs.

Groot Phesantekraal’s rich history One of Durbanville’s oldest farms, the heritage that is Groot Phesantekraal dates back to 1698 when Cape governor, Simon van der Stel, granted the land to its first owner, Captain Olof Bergh of the VOC (whose name lives on as one of the Cape’s rare aged brandies produced by the solera method). A story of improbable love, triumph and perseverance is woven into the farm’s history. Olof Bergh’s heart was captured by the beautiful Anna de Koning, daughter of a freed slave in the Jan van Riebeeck household. Anna and Bergh married in 1676 and together they

farmed the land now known as Groot Phesantekraal. After her husband’s death, she became a wealthy widow, inheriting the farm.

Thanks to her intelligence and beauty, she became a distinguished member of the Cape of Good Hope elite.

Records show that by 1756 some 40 000 vines had been planted on Groot Phesantekraal. In 1759 the property was sold to the Louw family and later purchased by Arend Brink in 1897.

Primarily devoted to mixed farming (grains, cattle and sheep), fourth-generation current custodians, André (Oubaas) and Ronelle Brink, planted vineyards covering 50ha of its 840ha expanse in 1996. These replaced mostly old bush vines.

have been rebranded. Phizante Kraal, one of the names of the farm during its long history, has been changed to the current name of the farm, Groot Phesantekraal, and the new wine labels include the Brink family crest.

Their current wine range includes the Blanc de Blanc MCC 2015, Chenin Blanc 2017, Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Sauvignon Blanc 2017, Shiraz 2016 (still to be released) and flagship wines Anna De Koning Chenin Blanc 2016 and Pinotage Berliet 2016.

ie Vriende van die Mag-organisasie (VVM) in Eersterivier is in 2012 gestig om oud-weermaglede te help om selfonderhoudend te word en om hulle ook by te staan in tye van nood.

“Dit is ’n nie-winsgewende organisasie en baie van die weermaglede wat lid was van die destydse Suid-Afrikaanse Weermag (SAW) of Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Weermag (SANW), het nie goed voorsiening vir hul oudag gemaak nie. Ons missie is om gehaltedienste te lewer aan diegene wat daarvoor kwalifiseer of hul begunstigdes, indien die weermaglid oorlede is, sodat hulle gemaklik kan lewe,” het Abe Bengell, tesourier van die organisasie, gesê.

Hy word bygestaan deur Jan Estruis, sekretaris, en hulle reis oral in die Wes-Kaap om oud-weermaglede te help om in hul behoeftes te voorsien.

“Dis ons doel om die oudlede te help om ’n gesonde lewenstyl te handhaaf, want baie is nie meer so jonk nie. Die meeste is verspreid oor die land en waar ons praatjies gaan hou, moedig ons die groep van bv. een dorp aan om hul eie groentetuin aan te lê sodat hulle in hul eie en ander se behoeftes

kan voorsien.

“Dit baat nie dat jy as afgetrede weermaglid in sak en as gaan sit nie. Jy kan jouself en jou medemens help, al is dit dan net met ’n bemoedigende woord of ’n besoek,” het Bengell gesê. Volgens hom wil die organisasie ook die jeug met vaardighede toerus om patrioties teenoor hul land te wees en by die SANW aan te sluit.

“Vandat die Suid-Afrikaanse Kaapse Korps (SAKK) ontbind is, het ons kontak met ons lede verloor. Baie van hulle het by SAKK aangesluit vir twee jaar diensplig en ons sal dit waardeer as naasbestaandes of lede ons bel. Dalk is daar iets wat ons vir ons mede-makkers kan doen,” het Bengell gesê.

Op Saterdag 21 Oktober het veterane met meer as 90 jaar diens sertifikate vir lidmaatskap tot die organisasie ontvang.

“VVM wil na almal uitreik en ’n verskil maak. Ek nooi almal uit om ons te skakel as hulle onseker is oor iets, nog inligting soek of ons net wil laat weet van ander wat siek of in die hospitaal is,” het hy gesê.

or 15-year-old Lucrisha Julius from Blackheath, performing monologues and being able to put herself in a character’s position is something she deems as remarkable.

Lucrisha performed a monologue at the International Arts Talent Showcase (IATS) at the Silverstar Casino in Johannesburg on Friday 6 October. She has since received a callback and has been invited to perform at the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (ARTS) in July 2018 at the Walt Disney Swan Hotel in Orlando, Florida.

Performing at ARTS will entail Lucrisha going to America for seven days where she will be performing in front of an international panel of agents, casting directors and others in the industry from across the world.

Lucrisha, who attends Fairbairn Lucrisha College High School, performs monologues and has participated in a few plays.

“While preparing for a performance, I would normally start memorising my words long in advance, so that I can have enough time to fully develop into my character,” she explains. “Watching videos and observing people helps me fully understand the character that I need to transform into, and I keep myself focused by standing in front of the mirror and talking to myself. I get lost in my preparation,” says Lucrisha.

Lucrisha’s mother, Agnes Jantjies says that seeing her daughter perform at the IATS alongside the best in the country was an incredibly proud moment. “She has always loved to do poetry and drama at eisteddfods and plays,” explains Jantjies.

Lucrisha says that what stood out most to her at the IATS was the amount of talent South Africans have. “So many people, young and old, want to make a career out of their talent. The passion backstage was con-

tagious and the feeling on stage was indescribable. It’s also incredible knowing that all the hard work and preparation has paid off in the end and that I have been blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime,” she says.

Before leaving for ARTS she will be required to attend two boot camps in Johannesburg as a means of preparing. “Unfortunately this experience comes with a hefty price tag,” says Jantjies. “We need to pay for the entire package, which includes the accommodation, workshops and conventions for the seven days in Florida. That is besides the travelling fees to and from Orlando.”

Lucrisha says she feels incredibly blessed by this entire experience. “I did not think that my talent was of an international standard at all, but I am very passionate about my dream and want to inspire children by showing them that with hard work and determination, your dreams can become your reality,” she says.

Julius She counts her mother as her greatest role model and source of support. “She has always been there for me through every performance and is my biggest fan even though everybody else thought that this was just a ‘drama phase’ I was going through,” explains Lucrisha. “To this day she still supports me and wants me to do and be the best that I can be.”

“I am very proud of her and very blessed to have such a talented child. I am her biggest fan,” says Jantjies.

After she completes her high school career, Lucrisha wants to study further to obtain a BA degree. “I believe doing well academically opens many doors for you in the future.

There are many careers I can pursue in the performing arts; however, right now I have not decided which one I’d like to specialise in,” she says. For Lucrisha’s mother her only wish is that her daughter makes a living by doing what she loves best.

Faunal survey in Cape Flats Nature Reserve T

he sixth annual faunal survey was conducted from 19 to 21 October at the Cape Flats Nature Reserve on the grounds of the University of the Western Cape.

The Thursday until the Saturday saw Biodiversity and Conservation Biology (BCB) staff and students, as well as hobbyists, volunteers and school learners, all joining together in the fun while collecting valuable scientific information.

More than 60 participants spent day and night “bundu-bashing” through the reserve in search of anything that moved.

On the Thursday various traps were set out. On the Friday morning the tortoise survey took place under the guidance of Dr Martin Hendricks.

Only a section of the reserve can be covered and this year a very overgrown part that is in dire need of a fire was surveyed.

Twelve angulate (Chersina angulata) tortoises were found – seven males, four females and one sub-adult (sex cannot be determined yet).

The survey also covered a count of reptiles (25 chameleons were spotted along with eggeaters and cross-marked whip snakes, as well as various species of geckos and lizards); mammals (five rodent species including mice, gerbils, rats and shrews); birds (35 species recorded, with one addition); amphibians (eight sand frogs were recorded in

Vissers gevra: ‘Wat heet jóú wurm?’

D

ie Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) en vennote is besig met ’n studie oor die wurms wat deur plaaslike visvanggeesdriftiges gebruik word ten einde ’n taksonomiese sleutel en veldgids saam te stel.

Bloedwurms, wonderwurms, gruiswurms, maanskynwurms of poedingwurms – watter een van hierdie klomp gebruik vissermanne die meeste vir visaas en hoe kry hulle dit in die hande?

Dít is een van die vrae op ’n kortlys wat aan vissers versprei word deur die US en sy vennote, wat navorsers van Sanparke se Tuinroete Nasionale Park en die Knysnakom-projek insluit.

Dr. Carol Simon, ’n marienebioloog aan die US, sê die doel van hierdie vraelys is om ’n beter idee te kry van hoe groot die aanvraag na borselwurms is wat as aas gebruik word langs die Suid-Afrikaanse kuslyn.

Terselfdertyd hoop hulle ook om konsensus te bereik oor die algemene name wat in Suid-Afrika gebruik word om hierdie aasspesies te benoem.

“Ons navorsing toon dat algemene name waarmee na aasspesies verwys word, dikwels nie konsekwent gebruik word in veldgidse en inligtingsbrosjures en -pamflette nie en soms selfs nie eens in die wetenskaplike vaklektuur nie,” verduidelik sy.

Sy noem dat een so ’n algemene naam byvoorbeeld verwys na ’n groep soortgelyke wurms, óf na verskillende spesies; óf ’n wurm kan meer as een algemene naam hê.

Simon meen dié benaming kortwiek die doeltreffende bestuur van ’n belangrike hulpbron.

“Ons het foto’s van wurms wat gereeld bymekaargemaak word vir aas in die vraelys opgeneem en vra dan vir vissermanne om die algemeen bekende name daarvan

Simon sê hierdie werk is belangrik aangesien marienewurms belangrike ekologiese funksies vervul ten opsigte van ri-

viermondings en sandstrande, maar is ook uiters belangrike hulpbronne vir bestaans-, sowel as stokperdjievissers.

Voorafgaande data dui daarop dat sommige spesies wat in Suid-Afrika gebruik word, ook wêreldwyd wyd verspreid voorkom.

E

k kom onlangs op ’n spotprentjie af wat die draak steek met die kommissie wat finansiële beplanners verdien vir hul werk. Die finansiële beplanner sê vir ’n man hy verkoop aftreepakkette. “Hoe werk hulle?” vra die man. “As ek genoeg van hulle verkoop, tree ek ryk af,” antwoord die finansiële beplanner.

Nogal snaaks, het ek gedink, maar as dit nie vir finansiële beplanners se harde werk was nie, sou baie meer mense as wat tans die geval is, brandarm aftree.

Hoe belangrik dit is om so vroeg moontlik in jou lewe te begin spaar vir aftrede, word dramaties deur die volgende voorbeeld geïllustreer.

Gestel jy begin om vir tien jaar lank aan die begin van elke jaar net R2 000 te belê wat 6% rente per jaar verdien.

Die rente word saam met die kapitaal herbelê sodat verdere rente op die rente ook verdien word. Aan die einde van die tiende jaar gaan jou belegging R27 943 werd wees.

As jy nou, ná tien jaar, die jaarlikse belegging staak, maar die kapitaal los om verder te groei teen 6% per jaar gaan jou belegging ná nog nege jaar R47 210 werd wees.

Dit is meer as dubbel die R20 000 wat jy uit jou eie sak belê het.

Vergelyk nou jou situasie met dié van ’n persoon wat in die jaar wanneer jy ophou om R2 000 per jaar te belê, begin om R4 000 per jaar te belê, waarop ook 6% rente per jaar verdien word wat weer herbelê word.

Ná nege jaar gaan die belegging vir die eerste keer meer as joune wees, naamlik R48 723.

Die persoon moes dus nege jaar lank dubbel soveel belê as wat jy belê het om jou belegging verby te steek. Hierdie persoon het inderdaad ’n “boete” van R2 000 per jaar vir nege jaar lank betaal vir sy of haar versuim om vroeër te begin spaar. ’n Mens kan natuurlik op verskeie maniere vir aftrede voorsiening maak.

Die staat moedig egter die publiek aan om deur middel van bydraes tot aftreefondse voorsiening te maak deur sodanige bydraes tot sekere perke as belastingaftrekkings toe te laat.

Probeer om, indien jy dit enigsins kan bekostig, die volle bedrag wat aftrekbaar is, by te dra.

Selfs al behoort jy aan ’n werkgewer se aftreefonds, is dit raadsaam om ’n finansiële beplanner te raadpleeg om te bereken of jy die volle bedrag bydra wat belastingaftrekbaar is. Indien nie, kan die balans wat aftrekbaar is tot ’n uittredingsannuïteitsfonds bygedra word.

By applying to become a beneficiary, local registered organisations can earn money offering an in-store wrapping service at the Shoprite or Checkers outlet closest to them.

4500 to run race this year Avid runners from all over the Cape are once again getting ready to take to the streets of Mitchell’s Plain for the annual JP21 Mitchell’s Plain Titans race.

“Die rede vir my registrasie by Cape Town Tygerberg was dat daar nie strawwe kompetisie vir my spelers by Goodhope was nie.

tellenberg, D.F. Malan, HS Bellville en President se o.19-krieketspanne het verlede week as afdelingwenners deurgedring na die eindronde in Cemstone se sesaan-’n-kant-toernooi vir skole in die Tygerbergstreek.

Stellenberg het al drie sy wedstryde in die uitdunronde teen HTS Bellville, Curro en Brackenfell gewen, en so ook D.F. Malan in sy wedstryde teen De Kuilen, Edgemead en The Settlers. President was baas in sy kragmetings teen Parow, HS Tygerberg en Milnerton. In die vierde afdeling het HS Bellville, Durbanville en Fairbairn elk twee van hul drie wedstryde gewen, maar Bellville het met die beste kolfgemiddelde die eindronde gehaal. Cody Nieuwoudt (81*) en JT Schoeman (6/28) was die afgelope naweek die uitblinkers toe Stellenberg (118/3) die Krieketskool Nuweland met 7 paaltjies verslaan het. In HS Bellville (125) se sege met 33 lopies oor Parklands was Tao Avontuur

(5/37) en Lawrence Borthwick (4/13) se boulwerk deurslaggewend. HS Tygerberg (116) was met 56 lopies te sterk vir HTS Bellville danksy die boulwerk van Henry Janse van Rensburg (4/11). In die PNA Cape Gate-o.15uitklopkompetisie pak die spanne in vandeesweek se kwarteindronde mekaar soos volg aan: Durbanville t Curro, HS Bellville t HS Tygerberg, Stellenberg t Fairmont, Milnerton t D.F. Die beste presteerders in verlede week se eersteronde-wedstryde was Justin Harmse (Fairmont, 5/11 t Fairbairn), Stefan van Wyk (Tygerberg, 5/22 t Edgemead) en Shae Byrne (Milnerton, 55 t Brackenfell).

In die Manuel’s Busdiens-uitklopkompetisie vir o.14’s is die loting vir die kwarteindronde: Stellenberg t Curro, Tygerberg t Milnerton, Brackenfell t Durbanville, Fairbairn t HS Bellville. Uitblinkers in die eerste wedstryde was Justin Behrens (Milnerton, 110 t De Kuilen), Jak du Toit (Durbanville, 99* t The Settlers), Jaden Janse van Rensburg (Tygerberg, 74*t Edgemead) en Ethan Konstabel (Tygerberg, 7/13 t Edgemead).

Wêreldkampioene: Francois du Plessis se Goju-Kai-karateskool het tydens die sewende karate-wêreldkampioenskap wat einde September in Vancouver, Kanada plaasgevind het, vier wêreldkampioene opgelewer. Diane de Kock (meestersvroue-kumite), Craig Snyman (11/12 jaar in die o.47 kg-seunskumite), Jude Newman (juniors in die o.61 kg-seunskumite) en Zion September (12/13 jaar in die o.50 kg-seunskumite) is almal gekroon as wêreldkampioene in hul onderskeie afdelings. Altesaam 26 lande en meer as 500 karatekas het deelgeneem.

Francois se karateskool het 21 lede in die nasionale span gehad en 11 medaljes verower. Voor (van links) is Diane de Kock (goud), Jude Newman (goud), Zion September (goud), Priscilla de Klerk (twee silwer), Craig Snyman (goud), Samantha Carstens (twee brons) en sensei Charl Roux (brons). Hy is ’n lid van die Cape Town Angling Club (CTAC) en verteenwoordig weer die Westelike Provinsie se o.13-span in Desember by die nasionale toernooi in Bloemhof.

ie sestien Premierligasokkerspanne kry almal hierdie naweek ’n blaaskans van PSL-wedstryde, maar is almal gewikkel in die Telkombeker-uitklopstryd.

Ajax Cape Town en Cape Town City reis onderskeidelik na Polokwane op Saterdag 28 Oktober en Baroka op Sondag 29 Oktober. Albei wedstryde word in die Peter Mokaba-stadion in Polokwane gespeel.

Cape Town City het verlede jaar die Telkombeker verower en is een van drie van die grootste spanne wat vir die kompetise gekeur is.

Die ander twee is Bidvest Wits en Mamelodi Sundowns.

City het in sy opmars na die eindstryd afgereken met Bloemfontein Celtic, Baroka, Free State Stars en Supersport United.

Hulle pak juis nou vir Baroka in die eerste kragmeting.

City sal sy titel wil verdedig nadat hy op 14 Oktober in die MTN8-eindstryd met strafdoele teen Eric Tinkler se Supersport United verloor het.

Ajax is verlede jaar in die uitspeelwedstryd (eerste agt) deur

Supersport United met 1-0 uitgeskakel. Daarna het Supersport met Mamelodi Sundowns in die kwarteindstryd en in die halfeindstryd met Orlando Pirates met dieselfde telling afgereken.

Ajax se oorwinning Saterdag oor Bloemfontein Celtic in die Athlone-stadion was net die inspuiting wat die span nodig gehad het om vertroue op te bou.

Ajax het gewys dat hy kan wen en ook aanslae in die laaste kwartier van ’n wedstryd kan afweer, soos wat hulle teen Bloemfontein Celtic gewys het.

Tydens die voorbereiding vir die Polokwane-wedstryd vandeesweek was daar ’n nuwe gees onder die spelers op die oefenveld. speel en indien die Urban Warriors Saterdag se wedstryd wen, sal die span genoeg vertroue hê vir sy volgende PSL-wedstryd teen Platinum Stars op Woensdag 1 November in die Royal Bafokeng-stadion in Rustenburg.

In Saterdag se wedstryd teen Bloemfontein Celtic het Ajax talle doelkanse verbrou. Teen Polokwane sal die Urban Warriors dié kanse moet benut, want hulle kry net een kans om dié Telkombekerstryd te wen, anders is dit neusie verby vir die res van die kompetisie. Ajax het laas die Telkombeker in 2008 met 2-1 teen Orlando Pirates in Durban gewen en die volgende jaar teen Kaizer Chiefs vasgeval. Tashreeq Morris het gewys dat hy kan afrond en dit was ook duidelik teen Bloemfontein Celtic dat die afrigter, Stanley Menzo, se wedstrydplanne nou stadig begin vrugte afwerp.

Die moontlikheid bestaan dat Toriq Losper dalk weer opgeroep kan word na die senior span vir die Telkombekerstryd.

Hy het die afgelope ruk vir Ajax in die Multichoice Diskikompetisie gespeel.

Tashreeq Morris van Ajax Cape Town en Aphiwe Lubisi van Bloemfontein Celtic is hier in ’n stryd om die bal gewikkel in die PSL-kragmeting Saterdag in die Athlone-stadion.

Morris was een van die tuisspan se doelskieters in hul oorwinning van 2-1 oor Bloemfontein Celtic. Die ander doel is deur Bantu Mzwakali vir Ajax geskiet, terwyl Isaac Nhlapo vir Celtic gedoel het.

UWK (241/4) is stewig geplaas teen Langa (151/7 gesl.) danksy Ridaa Isaacs (114), Mujahid Toffar (70) en Luke Philander (4/34), terwyl Bellville (179/7 gesl.) ewe goed geplaas is teen Kaapstad (139).

Dewald Botha (7/46 en 37) en Lenert van Wyk (54) het blink vertoon.

Durbanville (154/6) het die hef in die hand teen Victoria (134) ná stewige bydraes deur Kuda Samunderu (73), Jean Strydom (39) en GF Linde (4/12). In sy debuut in die WPkompetisie het Brackenfell (135 en 25/4) taamlik wankelrig begin teen Ottomans (179). Lorenzo Jacobs (4/17) en Wiaan Smit (3/30 en 30) het die beste vertoon vir die Brakke. Milnerton (212) het ook ’n agter-

stand teen WP-klub (251/3), maar Damian Crowley (66) en Jonathan Schwerin (52) het hul kant gebring.

In die eerste liga vaar Edgemead (170) met sy goed gebalanseerde boulaanval uitstekend teen Groenpunt (68 en 87/5). Robert Marshall (43) en Dylan Verreyne (36) het die beste met die kolf gevaar. Kraaifontein (210/7 gesl.) het in sy debuut in die kompetisie ook goed afgeskop teen Gugulethu (89 en 21/2). Darryl Losper (93), Seth Fledermaus (73), Arno Pekeur (3/10) en Fabian Faro (3/17) was die Kraaie se staatmakers.

Tygerberg-klub (174/8 gesl.) trek nog gelyk met Strandfontein (172/9 gesl.) met knap bydraes deur Neil Abrahams (61), Luwaaz September (41 en 4/42) en Franco Kasner (3/32).

Maar Noordelikes-Goodwood (201) is op die agtervoet teen Primrose (261/6 gesl.).

Goeie afrigters gesoek Durbanville/Bellville, wat ’n seisoen of wat gelede die voorste nie-universitêre rugbyklub in die WP was, wil spoedig weer daardie hoogtes bereik.
