ROTARY: ‘CONNECTING THE WORLD’

Club shakes things up TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

N

ewly elected Blouberg Rotary Club (BRC) president James Hay, says he loves a good challenge and he is ready for what the new year has in store for the club. The theme for their 2019/2020 Rotary year is “Rotary connects the World” and BRC aims to do just that. BRC is part of District 9350, which includes Angola and Namibia. According to Hay, the theme does not necessarily just mean forging international connections, but also connecting with one’s community, and the wider South African and African communities. During his recent travels, Hay visited roRary clubs in Bali, Thailand and Hong Kong. All these clubs have extended invitations for BRC to visit them and to work together on joint-community projects – an opportunity to connect. “In July I was visited by American Rotarians from Vermont, who are partnering with BRC to buy a new bronchoscope for the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital. Last week the club was visited by 52 Indian Rotarians from the Varanasi Central Club. The fellowship evening with them included having a vegetarian meal together and offering those who wished to partake, a traditional Western Cape wine-tasting. BRC has been invited to visit both Vermont and Varanasi. Talking on his new role with eagerness, Hay says he will be bringing a lot of changes to the club. “Everyone must be challenged. We will bring in a new way of doing things, bring in a new system of doing things. It is only a few months into our new year and we have achieved a lot. The club is really living up to the theme,” he says.

Hay moved to Cape Town from Port Elizabeth after he retired in 2016. He then joined the rotary towards the end of that year. “I’m fairly new to the club but I’m ready for this journey,” he says. He added that when you work you think you are too busy to do charity work or get involved in the community. Only when you start getting involved, you realise you wasted so much time not doing it, he said. “I wish I started a long time ago. You are never too young or too old to serve and make a difference,’’ he says. He is also passionate about the youth and before being elected as president he was a youth director at the club. “We are fortunate to have some schools that have joined. We run several projects with them and they also run their own projects. “One such project is the Vaatjie Literacy Project where learners from the interact clubs read age-appropriate storybooks to the learners from Vaatjie Primary School as well as assist the Vaatjie learners in improving their reading skills. “Recently the BRC members joined hands with parents, teachers and interact clubs from Curro Century City in doing a beach cleanup at the Milnerton lighthouse,” he says. The Interact clubs that joined the Rotary club are Curro Century City, Parklands College, Milnerton High School, Bosmansdam High School, Sinenjongo High School, Table View High School, and Blouberg International. Milnerton Primary School joined EarlyAct, that is also affiliated to Rotary International. The club is open to anyone no matter the age. BRC members meet weekly on Thursdays at 18:30 at the Italian Club in Rugby. For more information or how to get involved or donate email James Hay at 007jameshay@gmail.com.
