Clear skies before the storm With yet another cold front hitting the province, a local photographer in Milnerton captured the beauty of the Lagoon beach in Milnerton on Thursday, 9 July. The South African Weather Service warned that large waves and gale force to strong gale force winds were expected on Monday 13 July especially in parts of the Western Cape as another cold front moves through. CASES PEAKING: RESIDENTS ‘IGNORE’ REGULATIONS

Covid-19 up in Milnerton KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

A

s Covid-19 is peaking in the country, cases in Brooklyn and Ysterplaat has escalated with more than 100 cases. This as lockdown regulations continue to be ignored by residents, says chair of the Brooklyn, Ysterplaat and Rugby Residents’ Association, Fay Vogel. According to Vogel, Brooklyn had once again deteriorated into a state of despair. “Even though we have a pandemic, that should not be the reason for the poor state

of Brooklyn. The issue on the main road is escalating with illegal braai areas and new ones being added as well as non-removal of refuse. The numbers of Covid-19 cases will continue to increase because no one is taking charge of the main road. We are on level 1 here in Brooklyn,” Vogel said. Vogel described the situation as fighting a losing battle, with residents not adhering to the rules and wearing of masks. Vogel added, “The police and law enforcement are not working with us and we report these incidents, saying they will have operations in the area. Illegal traders are taking

over the main road.” TygerBurger previously reported that in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Brooklyn residents claim they are held hostage in their homes due to unhygienic shops in Koeberg Road posing a danger to their health. This is still continuing as residents have described the shops as “cesspools” with no health precautions in place. A resident, Lavona Jansen, said she does not want to leave her house as she fears for her family’s health. “More needs to be done to tackle those who do not abide by the regulations. I know there

are cases everywhere, but we must continue to protect ourselves and not do foolish deeds which pose a danger to others. Our councillor is helping out where he can, but residents simply ignore the rules. Social distancing is not taking place. No wonder we have an increase in Covid-19 cases,” Jansen said. Ward 55 councillor, Fabian Ah-Sing, said he is seeing a refusal by many across the ward to protect themselves and those around them with regards to Covid-19. “I encourage the residents of ward 55 to observe social distancing, to wear face masks and to wash their hands regularly.”
