LOCKDOWN LEVEL 2: AMATEUR SURFERS RETURN
Beaches reopen for all KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
G
reat excitement prevailed at the weekend when President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country will move to level 2 of the nationwide lockdown. This means that all beaches are open, bringing relief to Milnerton and Table View residents, as well as local surfers in the area. The South African government relaxed leisure travel, which allows visitors to return to beaches to revive the tourism industry. This will allow visitors to again experi-
ence activities such as swimming at designated beaches. TygerBurger previously reported that only professional surfers were allowed to return to the water during level 3 lockdown. Max Swanepoel, a local surfer in Bloubergstrand, was overjoyed on Saturday 18 August when the announcement was made. “Local surfers were not allowed to surf during level 3 of the lockdown. Some of the surfers I know went to the beach in secret, with most afraid of being arrested. Most of my friends were arrested and now have a criminal record against their names. I’m just happy that we can go back to doing nor-
mal things, which was long overdue,” Swanepoel said. A resident in Milnerton, Joy Langley, said she missed walking on the beach with her dogs. “Before the lockdown, I went to walk on Lagoon beach with my dogs. That was the only real chance I had to spend some quality time and to get my mind off certain things. I’m not only glad but over the moon that I get to walk on the beach again and dip my toes in the water,” Langley said. Other residents said certain rules need to be set in place to regulate the number of people visiting beaches.
“We have to remain cautious. Yes, this is good news, but how will it look if thousands of people flock to the beach at the same time? The government needs to come up with some rules to avoid large crowds at beaches,” a post on Facebook read. However, restrictions and safety precautions are still in place, such as gatherings with only 50 people allowed. The sale of alcohol and cigarettes are permitted, as well as the reopening of gyms. Travel between provinces is now permitted for leisure. A curfew will also remain in place between the hours of 22:00 and 04:00.
