esidents in Table View and Milnerton are up in arms over the housing development earmarked for nine erven in Racing Park, Milnerton. The proposal would see a transitional residential area comprising approximately 1 500 units in blocks of flats. Great concern and unhappiness about the nature of the development peaked on Monday 20 July - the last day for residents to submit their comments and objections. The City of Cape Town called on residents last week to submit comment on the development application for erven in Racing Park, Milnerton. The project will be undertaken
by the provincial department of human settlements. Dunoon councillor, Lubabalo Makeleni, told TygerBurger that in an effort to curb the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, 1 500 temporary shelter units are in the pipeline for the Dunoon elderly and disabled due to the density of the area. Residents in the surrounding area claim that the infrastructure will not cope with this kind of volume. They took to social media to express their outrage prior to the closing date of comments and objections. One of the posts on Facebook said that Table View and surrounds have been earmarked for destruction. “The amount of applications to densify this suburb is ridiculous. We have called for a moratorium on all development
until the infrastructure and sewerage is upgraded and can take the extra volume. It is insane that more and more people are being pushed into our area or moved around at a whim, without much thought or regard for the people who have invested here and have been here for many years. It has to stop,” the post reads. Ward 113 councillor, Dr Joy Solomon, said the development will have a huge impact in her ward and businesses in Killarney Gardens and Racing Park will be negatively affected. “Most people are not happy because it does not make sense to take industrial land, which will provide thousands of jobs, and turn it into temporary housing which they could put anywhere. If we turn that into
housing, people will lose work opportunities,” Solomon said. The City’s mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, said at this point in time the City’s development management department is awaiting public comment on the development application. “All of the comments received by 20 July will be collated and the said application will be assessed in accordance with the municipal Planning By-law, taking into account the comments received during the public commenting period that is currently underway,” Nieuwoudt said. A reliable source told TygerBurger that if the proposed development goes ahead as planned, they will resort to legal steps and protests.
