essages of condolences have been pouring in following the death of a Milnerton Ridge Neighbourhood Watch member.

Ignatius Wilhelm van Rooyen (34) was shot dead on Friday 21 June.

Milnerton Police confirmed the incident According to the police he was driving near the corners of Freedom Way and Omuramba Road when a white bakkie overtook him on the left side, after which he gave chase.

He pulled the vehicle off the road.

“Several shots were fired from the bakkie.

The deceased was declared dead on the sce-

ne,” Captain Nopaya Madyibi, police spokesperson, told TygerBurger.

The incident occurred around 18:50.

Mark Lindsell, chairperson of the Milnerton Ridge Neighbourhood Watch, described his fellow volunteer as a quiet, considerate, knowledgeable and practical person.

Someone who is professional and principled and fair and disciplined.

He is also described as a caring and compassionate person, someone who was firm, a no-nonsense individual with a very dry sense of humour.

Van Rooyen is also said to have been a natural leader, a great team player, commanding immediate respect and admiration from all.

Notoben, an amputee, can be found each morning during the week, and often over weekends at the intersection of Plattekloof Main Road and the N7 highway near Edgemead. She has been coming here for nearly eight years now, she told TygerBurger in a one-on-one interview last week.

The pay is not that great, but the people are at least friendly.

Notoben, who is originally from Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape, stays alone in her house in Dunoon. She was never married and is childless.

Beds ready for winter The Western Cape department of social development says it is geared-up to assist homeless people through the cold winter nights.

Despite cold weather, many homeless men and women are still sleeping on the streets in makeshift shelters.

Last week Esther Lewis, head of communications at social development said the department funds 27 shelters for homeless adults in the province, in terms of their intervention programme.

This equates to just over 1500 bed spaces, she says. Overnight shelters are located in Elsies River (Elim) and Bellville and Kraaifontein (The Haven).

Online seller scammed by three men DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A

nother Gumtree scam has left an unsuspecting Mitchell’s Plain woman out of pocket.

The 30-year-old victim, who advertised her car on the popular platform, met the “prospective buyers” in Brackenfell last week. “She met up with the man in the parking lot of Tyger Valley Shopping Centre on Wednesday 19 June, where he informed her that he wanted to buy the car, but that she should take him to meet up with his employer at CapeGate Lifestyle Centre,” says Brackenfell police spokesperson Captain Erica Crous.

At the parking lot of this centre, another man was waiting for them and in the conversation that ensued, the employer took out a small bag of what appeared to be diamonds.

Whether the diamonds were real, is questionable, but the display was intended to entice the victim as part of the scam, according to police. The victim was again asked to take the men to another shopping centre, Hypermarket in Old Paarl Road where yet another man met up with them.

“After convincing her that they are definitely buying the car, but that she had to go drop one of the men off at a garage in Old Paarl Road. However, the other men demanded ‘collateral’ as proof that she would come

back with the car,” says Crous. The women withdrew R3 000 at a nearby ATM and left her cellphone with the two other men, after which she left to drop the third one. They also gave this man R7 000 in cash, before he left.

“When the woman returned to the hypermarket, the men were gone with her cash and cellphone,” says Crous.

Police warns the public to be very vigilant when undertaking transactions with goods advertised online.

“These scammers are good at what they do and it is to easy to become a victim of crime,” says Crous. A case of theft was opened and is currently being investigated by Brackenfell police.

Die toernooi het Maandag 24 Junie begin en word geborg deur die Stad Kaapstad.

Volgens ’n verklaring van die Stad begin die toernooi die veldtog vir die 2023 Netbalwêreldbekertoernooi wat deur Kaapstad aangebied sal word.

Altesaam 37 spanne van regoor die land ding mee om die nasionale titel in die o.19toernooi.

Die toernooi bied ook die geleentheid aan 120 beamptes, wat junior skeidsregters in-

sluit, om hulle vermoëns ten toon te stel en moontlik hulle gradering te verbeter. As deel van die ontwikkelingsdoelwitte word ’n afrigtingskliniek vir 65 spelers en 25 afrigters van regoor Kaapstad aangebied tydens die toernooi. Dit sal afrigters help in hulle strewe om nasionale netbal-afrigtings-akkreditasie te verwerf.

Don’t be the weakest link in cyberfraud DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

wo women were defrauded of more than R130 000 last week, in a scheme involving cyber fraudsters, posing as bank officials from prominent banks.

This cybercrime tactic known as Vishing is on the increase and especially elderly people fall victim to this, according to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC).

“Vishing is ‘voice phishing’ where criminals phone bank customers, lead them to believe that they are speaking to the bank or a legitimate service provider and use social engineering tactics to manipulate them into disclosing their confidential bank card details, as well as other personal information. This information is then used to defraud you.” explains SABRIC chief executive officers (CEO), Kalyani Pillay.

In the latest incident last week, an elderly woman from Bloemfontein, who was visiting Brackenfell last week, lost all her savings, amounting to R121 000.

Police spokesperson Captain Erica Crous from Brackenfell police says: “The woman received a telephone call from someone purporting to work at her bank at the anti-fraud unit. She was told that several transactions were currently being undertaking on her account and asked whether she was aware of it.” The women told them that she had received no transaction SMSs notifying her.

The fraudsters then asked her for the last four digits of her account number, to enable them to stop any more transactions on her account. They were able to provide her with all her personal details including the first six digits of her ac-

count number. “At first she was hesitant and told them she would rather go to her nearest branch, but was convinced by the fraudsters that they would need the digits immediately in order to stop the ‘illicit’ transactions,” says Crous.

She provided her with the full account number and within minutes she started receiving SMS notifications of money leaving her account. Within about an hour all her savings was withdrawn from her bank account from locations throughout the country.

In another incident, a week prior a woman from Goodwood, was targeted in the same manner. “She was also phoned by fraudsters pretending to work at the anti-fraud department at another prominent SA bank. They could also provide her with all her personal details including her identity number (ID) number and again asked for the last four digits of her bank account in order to stop ‘illicit’ withdrawals from her account,” says Crous. Within minutes her account was emptied of an undisclosed amount.

Pillay warns consumers to put down the phone immediately if you receive such a call. “No bank will ever ask you for this information. Criminals are always looking for ways to exploit digital platforms to defraud victims, but the mitigation strategies deployed by banks are very robust, so it is easier to target people, as they are the weakest link,” says Pillay. She goes on to say that criminals are very skilled at using social engineering to manipulate their victims into divulging their personal or confidential information. “They capitalise on the fact that not all digital banking clients are digitally literate and exploit this vulnerability.”

Sewage infrastructure under increasing stress DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A

ten-year delay in the upgrade of the Zandvliet Waste Water Treatment Works, and a current overload has caused a deterioration in treated effluent quality.

In addition to this, the current budget constraints at the City of Cape Town has made it impossible to replace infrastructure quick enough to keep pace with changing wastewater characteristics.

Thus, the treatment process in such cases becomes overloaded and less effective.

These staggering realities were revealed during an interview with the Mayco member for water and sanitation, Xanthea Limberg over the escalation in sewage-related service delivery complaints reported citywide over recent years.

Below are extracts of the interview with Limberg.

Anslin Gysman shares his journey on The Voice SA.

From backing vocalist to going solo TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 Kuils River’s very own singing sensation, Anslin Gysman, says despite bowing out of The Voice SA Season 3 on Sunday 16 June, he is still on a mission to have his voice heard.

The Soneike resident, who grew up in Philippi, chatted to TygerBurger about what his journey on the show was like and the things he learned.

Gysman, who made it to the Top 8, shares that under the guidance of coach Francois Van Coke, his confidence grew tremendously.

“Being on the show was such an amazing experience. When I auditioned last year, I had not expected to get as far as I did. I’m humbled at the opportunity given to me.”

The 23-year-old says his singing journey started at the tender age of six when he used to create instruments with tins and sang. “I come from a very musical background. My singing, however, started at a young age where you’d always find me singing in the house.

This then moved to the church where I sang in the worship team. I’ve since been backing vocalists for the likes of Jimmy Nevis and Youngsta CPT, among others.

“Never did I think, I had it in me to be the main singer. Being on a platform such as The Voice SA made me realise that I had it in me to be a lead singer. I admit, I never anticipated that I’d get to Top 8.”

He says even though his journey on the show has come to an end, he still intends to make a career out of singing.

“Through the competition, I have grown as an artist and musician. I’ll be returning to singing at our church and sharpening my gift as a solo artist. I’ll be releasing my single very soon and also be making my debut as a solo artist.”

Gysman, a payroll officer, says he is yet to graduate from the University of the Western Cape. “My graduation for my diploma in Linguistics is currently pending.”

He adds that he is grateful for the support he received: “Thank you to everyone who supported and voted for me, this includes my friends, family and church members of the church I attend. I appreciate the love and support.”

There are clearly still problems at the Zandvliet Waste Water Treatment works.

(WWTW). How is this being attended to?

The Zandvliet WWTW is currently treating 70 Ml/d of wastewater (just below its 72 Ml/d capacity). However, due to a significant change in the raw wastewater characteristics, it is currently overloaded in terms of nutrient load.

The Wastewater Branch Master Plan indicated the need for a capacity upgrade project at Zandvliet to begin in 2010, and the first tender for professional services for the capacity upgrade was issued in 2010.

However, the upgrade project has been delayed by five tender appeals, including a High Court appeal, and a land claim. The delayed R1,5bn upgrade is now under construction, and the commissioning of the upgraded works is anticipated to be completed by December 2023.

The capacity of the WWTW will be increased by providing a second membrane bioreactor module. Membrane technology was chosen to enable re-use of the treated effluent. Further expansion will be implemented directly after completion of the current expansion, to cater for continuing urban growth in the area.

It must be noted that no untreated wastewater is discharged from the Zandvliet WWTW. All wastewater entering the WWTW is treated, however, due to the current overload, the treated effluent quality has deteriorated.

The City’s sampling and testing frequency has been increased to a weekly schedule and will include input from the community on agreed sampling locations.

These results are being shared with the National Department of Water and Sanitation, and with the CSIR. The river water quality is affected by various pollution sources within the catchment area, such as contaminated stormwater; grey water discharges from informal settlements; illegal dumping into the sewer system resulting in sewer overflows and pump station failures; farming activities; illegal dumping into the stormwater system and rivers; and overflowing septic tanks which are not emptied regularly.

Which wastewater treatment plants in the City of Cape Town has Green Drop status?

Green Drop status is administered by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). The last DWS Green Drop audit was done in 2011. However, assessments have continued at provincial level annually, known informally as “Green Drop Lite”, and the City of Cape Town was awarded the top spot for overall quality of wastewater in the region at the most recent ceremony held last year.

What grading system is used to determine effectivity at wastewater plants? And what is the rating at the different plants?

The most recent City report on effluent compliance for WWTWs in the City of Cape Town indicate that effluent was 81,97% compliant with relevant standards. There is no rating for “effectivity” of WWTW. Government regulations require WWTW be classified by size, but not by their process or by how efficiently they treat wastewater. The Green Drop system was implemented by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) to rate WWTW compliance in terms of their license conditions, operation and maintenance, which is probably the closest thing to “effectivity”.

Instances of non-compliance are mainly due to the following factors: . Changes in wastewater characteristics: WWTW is designed assuming certain wastewater characteristics, and when they change, the treatment process becomes overloaded and less effective.

We have noticed that the wastewater characteristics at some of our WWTW have changed significantly over time, and this has a big effect on our treated effluent quality. While the newer modules are designed to take account of this, the older modules can become overloaded.

Unfortunately, it would not be possible to replace infrastructure quickly enough to keep pace with changing wastewater characteristics within current budget constraints.

Due to the massive reduction in water use during the drought, we have seen a significant reduction of flow to our treatment works, but although the volume of wastewater has been reduced, it is carrying the same amount of pollution.

In other words, the pollution is more concentrated. WWTW is designed for certain nutrient concentrations, and when these increase beyond the design capacity of the plant, it can affect our WWTW performance.

Further, salinity and chloride concentrations have increased beyond our license discharge limits in the raw wastewaters, and because our treatment plants do not remove salinity or chloride (and we do not add any, either), our treated effluent does not comply with these parameters by default. . Illegal industrial discharges: Illegal industrial discharges can contain pollutant shock loads or chemicals that are toxic to our biological wastewater treatment systems. Depending on the toxin, our treatment processes become less effective and treated effluent quality deteriorates, or it knocks out our entire plant, with the same effect. Biological systems that use bacteria in the treatment process, take a while to recover from such shocks, so it could take up to six months for the plant to fully recover after an incident such as this. . Upgrade work on the existing plants: As soon as construction work on an upgrade starts, treated effluent quality deteriorates, as processes are taken offline for refurbishment. Upgrading a WWTW is like trying to service an aircraft in midflight. The wastewater flow can never be stopped or diverted, so the plant has to take and treat wastewater throughout the entire upgrade and construction project.

The upgrade constructions take on average three to five years to complete and treated effluent quality may be affected for that entire period of time.

This Master Plan predicts the growth in terms of potable water consumption, stormwater and wastewater production 10 years into the future and informs respective infrastructure upgrade requirements.

In terms of new development applications, the department has a master planning software programme into which any new development proposals are fed to determine whether sufficient capacity exists in the sewer networks to accommodate the development. This software will assess capacity in pipes all the way to the treatment works, not just in the immediate area of the development. No development is approved without there being adequate capacity in the existing infrastructure or without capacity being provided through expansion or upgrading of the infrastructure as part of the development. Bear in mind though that the “capacity” is a design capacity and does not make provision for rags, sand, fats and foreign objects, which is the root of the problem in most of our communities. In terms of wastewater treatment, all development applications are also sent to the wastewater branch for approval. The wastewater branch will only approve a development if sufficient unallocated capacity exists at the respective wastewater treatment works. The wastewater branch also monitors and records wastewater inflows and nutrient loads to all of its 25 treatment plants on an ongoing basis. From this historical data, actual growth rates in terms of flow and nutrient loads are calculated twice per annum. The growth rates are projected into the medium term (five years) and longer term (10 to 20 years), to indicate when each WWTW is projected to reach capacity, and this forms part of the wastewater branch’s 10-year Master Plan.

Actual growth is compared to the Master Plan wastewater flow predictions, and this informs when capacity upgrade projects must be initiated for each WWTW.

Is there currently an exodus of skills from the City’s water and sanitation department, due to either retirement or vacant positions?

There is no exodus at all. There are retirements, as expected, but not at an alarming rate. To counter the natural attrition risk, we have an engineering graduate internship programme aimed at boosting our scarce and critical skills capacity.

These young engineers work under the guardianship and mentorship of senior, experienced and long-serving engineers and staff members in order to ensure effective and seamless skills transfer.

Current upgrades Limberg confirmed that upgrades done to city sewage lines during the last three years include bulk sewers at Sanddrift in Montague Gardens; construction of a new bulk sewer from Athlone to Springfield Road, upgrade of the BlackMack Sewer from Blackheath to Macassar pump station and Macassar and Dunoon sewer pump stations.

“This is in addition to smaller pipe replacement/maintenance projects being undertaken on a constant basis around the city,” she says.

WWTW currently undergoing upgrades are: Borchards Quarry at a cost of R402.7m; Zandvliet extension at a cost of R1.742b; Macassar extension at a cost of R400m; Athlone extension at a cost of R771.5 million; Potsdam extension at a cost of R800 million, Mitchell’s Plain at a cost of R264 million, Bellville at a cost of R195.8m and Cape Flats at a cost of R252.2 million.

Wees oop vir ander mense se idees Ek het nooit verstaan wat dit beteken as iemand praat van jy moet oop wees vir oortuiging nie.

Ek het groot geword met die idee dat jy jou standpunt ten alle koste moet verdedig en ander probeer oortuig dat waarin jy glo die begin en die einde van die waarheid is. Veral in my tienerjare het ek probeer om alle debatte te wen. In sommige gevalle het ek sommer ’n onmiddellike mening gevorm en dit verdedig met alles wat ek gehad het.

Soms het ek Spreuke 23 vers 9 uit die Bybel aangehaal. “Spreek nie voor die ore van ’n dwaas nie, want hy sal die verstandigheid van jou woorde verag.”

By tye het ek self gedink ek is slimmer as my ouers, maar genadiglik het ek oor die jare geleer dat mens nie te verknog aan jou eie wysheid moet raak nie. Dat dit ook raadsaam is om na ander se menings te luister en belangriker nog, dit te respekteer.

Dit bring my by dit waaroor ek eintlik wil praat die krieket. SuidAfrika se mislukte poging om weereens die wêreldbekertoernooi te wen, om spesifiek te wees.

As jy sosiale media oopmaak sal jy die bitter kommentare sien van sogenaamde ondersteuners en ook die gespot van diegene wat ander lande ondersteun.

Suid-Afrikaners lag gewoonlik in die donkerste tye, maar dit wil voorkom of sport ons wegvoer na nog donkerder dieptes. Plekke wat ons nie eens besef het binne ons is nie.

Ons kruisig die spelers asof hulle moord gepleeg het. Hulle word persoonlik aangeval. In sommige gevalle word families sommer ook betrek.

In die kommentaar-afdelings steek die lelike monster van rassime telkens kopuit. Spelers word as kwota-spelers gebrandmerk, maak nie saak of die hele wêreld weet hulle is die beste in hul posisie nie. Dit is asof jy hierdie ouens nie kan oortuig dat ’n speler wat nie wit is dieselfde reg het om in ’n span te wees nie. Gerieflikheidshalwe word daar vergeet dat Suid-Afrika nog nooit ’n krieketwêreldbeker gewen het nie, selfs in die dae toe spanne oorheersend wit was nie.

Ek was een van daardie ouens wat al die jare gejubel het as ons nasionale spanne goed doen, maar sodra hulle ’n fout maak was ek op hulle. Wanneer hulle alle spanne voor hulle weggevee het was ek die een wat met trompetgeskal verkondig het hoe goed hulle regtig is, maar wanneer die nederlae gekom het was ek daar om hulle te herinner dat hulle laer as slangbollie is.

Die laaste klompie jare het ek my mening verander. Ek het begin besef dat hierdie ouens waarna ons opkyk en van wie ons afgode maak ook iemand se kind of ouer is. Voor ons hulle tot goddelike wesens verhewe het, was hulle net ouens wat in hul gekose sport wou presteer en eendag hul families trots maak. Gewone ouens met gevoelens.

Ja, ons droewige landjie het elke hupstoot nodig wat ons kan kry en ja, ons harte breek as ons sien hoe sukkel die manne wat onlangs nog alle spanne voor hulle platgevee het. Dit maak seer.

Maar ons moet besef dat hierdie mense is wat ook gevoelens het. Ek hoor onlangs dat Allan Donald sielkundige hulp moes kry ná sy uithardloopfiasko in 1999.

Hierdie man, wat toe hy op die kruin van die golf was vrees by kolwers ingeboesem het, het amper geknak onder die giftonge van die mense vir wie hy jare lank plesier verskaf het. Dit maak jou nie ’n swakkeling om jou mening te verander nie, dit wys jy is beter. – Brenden Ruiter

Sanger moet van beter weet Dat ’n bekende soos Desmond Wells op sosiale media die owerhede se optrede teen dronkbestuurders kan afmaak as ’n mors van tyd maak my sommer vies. Hy was self ’n polisieman en is iemand wat ’n rolmodel vir ander moet wees, so hy behoort van beter te weet as om dronkbestuur goed te praat. ’n Mens sal nooit weet hoe dit voel om iemand aan die dood af te staan weens iemand wat dronk agter die stuur geklim het nie. Nóg minder as jy daai bestuurder was. Ek ken iemand wat ná amper 10 jaar steeds homself blameer vir sy beste vriend se dood, en hy was nie eens self agter die stuur nie. Hy het toegelaat dat ’n ander vriend wat net ’n “bietjie te veel” gedrink het daardie aand die sleutels by hom neem en bestuur.

Desmond, en al die ander ouens wat hom steun, ek sien julle punt oor die taxi’s, maar jy kan nie taxi’s en dronkbestuur oor dieselfde kam skeer nie. Persoonlik dink ek die owerhede doen baie meer om onwettige taxi’s op ons paaie te bekamp. Die aantal kere wat my werkers, wat op taxi’s staatmaak, al laat was omdat die taxi “al weer afgetrek is”, getuig daarvan.

Dit gesê, dink ek Jan Alleman bestuur egter nie veel beter as die taxi’s nie.

Hoeveel mense gee vet as die verkeerslig oranje slaan terwyl daar meer as genoeg tyd is om te stop?

Hoeveel mense weet nie hoe om ’n flikkerlig aan te skakel nie, of by ’n stopstraat te stop nie? Waar ek woon is daar ouens met spogmotors wat nie eens stadiger ry by ’n stopstraat nie.

Op die roetes wat ek werk toe ry in die oggend is daar minstens drie motors in

Langebergweg vir wie die padreëls klaarblyklik nie geld nie – hulle ry in die baan vir aankomende verkeer verby die res van ons wetsgehoorsames.

Een oggend verlede jaar sit ek in ’n tou motors agter Giant Hyper, agter ’n taxi wat by die reëls hou, toe twee mans in ’n bakkie met ’n spoed aan die verkeerde kant van die pad verby ons skiet.

Die bestuurder het amper beheer verloor en ’n lamppaal getref toe hy op die sypaadjie aan die anderkant van die pad moes op ry om uit te swaai vir ’n motor wat van voor gekom het, maar van stadiger ry was daar geen teken nie.

Mense moet dalk eerder eers voor hul eie deur vee voor hulle hul mond uitspoel oor ander.

Laat my wonder Taxi’s oortree elke wat hier agter skuil moontlike wet Die berig in die TygerBurger van 12 Junie, (“Have your say at meeting”), wat die publiek, die skole en sportklubs die geleentheid gee om te besluit oor die toekoms van die Velodrome en atletiekbaan, laat my wonder wat hier agter skuil!

Hierdie sportfasiliteite is met die belastinggeld van die inwoners van die noordelike stadsgebiede gebou en was altyd beskikbaar vir alle sportgeleenthede.

Ek het vir jare die MTBS bygewoon en kan nog steeds voel die opwinding en trots van leerders om deel hiervan te wees.

Toe die munisipaliteit besluit het om die grond rondom hierdie sportfasiliteite te verkoop en daarmee saam hierdie fasiliteite deur ’n ontwikkelaar te laat bestuur, het alles verkeerd geloop en so kon my jongste kind nie ’n MTBS beleef wat hier plaasgevind het nie.

Ek wou die begin van die jaar huil oor die gesukkel van skole om ’n MTBS by Parow te hou. Dit was hopeloos te klein om enige positiewe impak te hê op die herinneringe vir ons kinders.

As ek die berig reg lees, het ons as belastingbetalers hier die geleentheid om die munisipaliteit te versoek (dwing) om nie ons enigste sportfasiliteite weg te gee nie.

As ’n ontwikkelaar self kan besluit oor hoe hierdie fasiliteite moet gebruik, beheer en bestuur word, is daar niks oor vir ons kinders en die verskillende sportsoorte wat die fasiliteite gebruik nie.

My pleidooi aan almal is om deel te neem en jou sê te sê.

Ons verwys na onlangse berigte en briewe oor die taxi’s wat elke moontlike wet oortree.

U het nog nie in die oggende in Belami-rylaan, tussen Okavango-en Brackenfell-rylaan, gery nie. Vanaf Okavango-rylaan tot by Brackenfellrylaan is daar drie verkeersirkels en elke sirkel (binne-in die sirkel) is ’n aflaaiplek.

Die eerste sirkel vanaf Okavango-rylaan se kant (by Makro) is ’n nagmerrie, drie tot vier taxi’s agtermekaar versper ’n hele rylaan.

Die ryvlak aan die regterkant neem jou na Makro, of in die rigting van Brackenfellrylaan.

Verkeer hoop op as gevolg van die druk vanaf Okavango.

Hierdie mense het nie ’n saak met jou nie.

Dieselfde gebeur by die komplekse se sirkel (middelste sirkel) en om nie eers te praat van die een by Brackenfell-rylaan nie.

Nog ’n bekende gemors is

by Tafelberg-meubileerders aan die agterkant van CapeGate-leefstylsentrum-sentrum.

Dáár stop hulle reg in die oprit na die meubelwinkel, teenoor ’n stopstraat en voor ’n skielike skerp draai na die agterkant van Gaint Hyper oppad na die Sasol Delightvulstasie.

En om alles te kroon jaag hulle deur die vulstasie se perseel om die verkeer by die stopstraat te vermy, en net maar weer links te draai in De Bronweg in die rigting van Okavango-rylaan.

Ek weet nie hoe mense se senuwees dit hou nie, want jy moet ten alle tye vir hulle pad gee, plek maak en bereid wees om terug te staan.

Wat van wetstoepassing geword het “weet die Vader alleen”. Hulle skitter in hul afwesigheid.

Youngs patients treated to movie T

he young ones at the Tygerberg Hospital were recently treated to a movie date, thanks to Cape Town charity campaigner Greg Bertish, and event sponsor Cape Town Masters Swimming.

Greg’s inspirational movie, Optimist, was screened to 40 youngsters from the hospital’s paediatric wards, as well as Brooklyn Chest Hospital.

They were also spoilt with pizza from Primi Piatti and juice and yoghurts from Oakland Dairy while watching the movie which was screened at the hospital school.

The movie details Greg’s incredible 200 km voyage in the Little Optimist, a children’s sailing dingy, and his personal journey to overcome his health issues.

As someone who spent more than 200 days in hospital, Greg’s mission is to provide children with the confidence to overcome the obstacles that life has thrown at them.

“Kids face tough operations and uncertainty. I hope to show them that sick people can still achieve amazing things.

“Tygerberg Hospital School is a beautiful

oasis for children battling illness. Showing the kids the movie and seeing how they responded to it was a real privilege,” Greg says.

The children also received medals collected by runners at Harfield Harriers running club.

Professor Pierre Goussard, a paediatric pulmonologist at the hospital, thanked Greg and his sponsors for the uplifting event.

“Greg is an inspiration for young and old and an amazing person and survivor of a serious medical condition. He has touched the hearts and lives of everyone present,” Pierre says.

This event is one of Greg’s ongoing projects involving The Little Optimist Trust, which last year launched the hugely successful charity event, The Great Optimist Race.

The inaugural race took place at the V&A Waterfront in October as part of the Cape Town International Boat Show, and involved 40 little “optimists” navigating the waters in the harbour.

The event will take place again this year on Friday 18 October.

The 51st fundraising event in association with Lucky Star will start at the Green Point Cricket Club and will include two routes along the Sea Point Promenade, a 10km walk that starts at 07:30 and a 5km walk that starts at 08:00.

Swaers se heldedaad red vyfjarige AVRIL FILLIES

ie reddingspoging van twee swaers het op Sondag 16 Junie voorkom dat die vyfjarige McKenzie van Ellinckhuijzen (Wellington) by die Muisbosskerm in Lambertsbaai in die see verdrink het.

ore than 300 traders, trader organisations and small businesses attended the Informal Economy Summit in the City Hall on Friday 21 June to tackle trader issues.

“Cape Town’s informal economy sustains about 140 000 individuals by providing much-needed income for the most vulnerable households. While Cape Town’s informal sector may be relatively small, especially by emerging country standards, its penetration into the most vulnerable households in the city and its impact in terms of poverty reduction are large,” said Mayco member for urban management, Grant Twigg, during his opening address at the annual summit.

Twigg further added that if traders are successful, communities become successful. He requested traders to provide feedback to the City on what can be done to enable growth, improve trading spaces, safer spaces and the business support that they need.

The City’s informal economy is made up of small- and micro-enterprises who are either entrepreneurs running their own businesses, or informal traders at public transport interchanges, along roadways and in the vicinity of shopping centres.

The one-day summit was a culmination of engagement sessions that were held across the city in the form of round-table discussions and micro-enterprise workshops.

The aim of these sessions was to lend a helping hand to the informal sector by listening to their concerns and collectively coming up with solutions.

The programme tackled issues that were pertinent to traders and were raised at the various engagement sessions.

The themes that were broadly covered today included: . a review of the economic growth strategy that was opened up for input from the informal economy players; . how to improve the landscape to facilitate the ease of doing business and the mechanisms to facilitate the development of the informal economy; . improving the management of business precincts to enable the growth of the informal economy – the discussions included precinct safety, landscaping and maintenance of public spaces, informal trading management, and the maintenance of a clean and attractive trading environment; . identifying opportunities for recycling and separation of waste; . business development and support for the community vendor programme and supplier development.

“Informal trading is not without its challenges. It is a tough balancing act between the formal and informal sectors.

“However, with proper guidance and sup-

port, many of these challenges are resolved.

Having said this, we should be mindful that informal traders enable large numbers of people to gain a foothold in the city’s urban economy and the City needs to support them in their ventures.

“It is a reality that the informal sector is probably the most likely to absorb people who leave formal sector employment, either voluntarily or involuntarily. With the shrinking job opportunities, we encourage individuals to consider entrepreneurship as opposed to joining the queues of unemployed individuals,” said Twigg.

Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management, James Vos: “We recently undertook an exercise to revise the current economic growth strategy because it is a priority to ensure that we continue to be the go-to city on the African continent and globally for business, trade, and tourism.

“After numerous interactions with internal and external stakeholders, the overall sentiment is that we should invest in programmes, projects and sectors that drive demand and makes business sense.”

The informal sector is represented by a diverse array of economic activities including financial services, healthcare, retail in food and beverages, recycling, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles, and the repair of personal and household goods, to mention just a few.

“In this respect, the two barriers to growth most frequently cited by owners of informal businesses are access to better locations and stifling government regulations – both of which have implications for how the City can best maximise the sector’s potential to help reduce unemployment and poverty. I am pleased that today’s session focused on making business easier for traders and how traders can maximise income opportunities,” added Twigg.

Below are some of the outcomes from the summit and the next steps: . developing a strategic partnership between all stakeholders in the informal economy space to collaborate on the implementation of key developmental programmes; . initiating a structured engagement between the City and the informal sector and to review policies and by-laws that negatively impact on the growth potential of the informal economy; . maximize the opportunities in the waste economy by influencing changes in behavior and promoting recycling by focusing on sorting of waste at source; . improving the management of key business precincts that benefit both the formal and informal sector. This would require the involvement of both private and public sector role-players as well as community-based organisations.

LISA LOTTERING @demi_lisa Hard work, dedication, balancing academics and sport is part of being a student-athlete.

These are the words of Sasha-Lee Petersen (23), who has managed to perfect these characteristics and has worked hard to play for the Southern Stings and Maties netball teams.

The athlete says in the final game against the Jaguars on Saturday 8 June during the Telkom Netball League, the Stings just couldn’t secure the win. “We wanted to do our best but the Jaguars were prepared.

They had a job to do and came out to do it.”

She says one of the highlights of the tournament was during the semi-finals when the team was eight goals down but managed to win.

Sasha-Lee first started playing at De Kuilen Primary School when her u.11 coach told her to. “I worked hard, I was competitive and wanted to make the Western Province (WP) team.” However, she failed to make the team that year but after hard work and dedication, she made the u.13 WP-team and Western Cape team that year and every year after that. “The year I didn’t make the team was a wakeup call. I started listening during training and worked harder. I played action netball so I never stopped playing and training even during the off-season.” She also played for the South African u.18- and u.21sides.

She has played for Maties netball since 2014 and plays in whichever position she is needed but mostly wing, goalie or centre.

Her biggest achievement was her inclusion in the first division of the u.23 SA Invitational team who played against Australia in 2014 and in 2016 when she played qualifiers for the u.21-side and won gold. She says to get to this point was tough because “you don’t just make it.”

“When you’re chosen you need to work hard because there are other players fighting for your position. This keeps you focused because you can be replaced. The coaches push you to your limit which is needed because this is your ‘job’”.

She says the biggest misconception people have is that it’s ‘easy’. “If you don’t do it yourself, you wouldn’t know what it’s like. People know it, but don’t know the severity of it.” She says not many people cope with being a student-athlete because it’s not for everyone. “You need to be focused.”

Sasha-Lee, who loves watching the international league, says she learns from the players and their work ethic on court. She also learns from her younger sister Zhané, who plays for the Maties second team. Although they haven’t played a tournament together, she says it’s amazing to train together.

“We push each other to do better and for my mom to see her daughters playing on this level, is great. My mom is very supportive and she’s always here to watch.” SashaLee says every player hopes to make Protea squad one day and if it’s meant to happen, it will.

For now, she’s focused on playing at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament and Varsity Cup and hopefully lift both trophies.

he success and accolades achieved by Durbanville Cricket Club this past season will go down as the most successful season ever in history since it was established in 1952.

Besides being crowned the 2019 National Club first XI champions they bagged nine more awards at the recent Western Province Cricket awards function.

The awards include: Club of the Year, Team of the Year 1st XI, Coach of the Year Manny Senger, Best Fielding team of the year 1st XI, Mens Amateur T20 winners 1st XI, Deaf Player of the Year Ruan du Plessis, Mens Premier League winners, Womans Premier League winners and Division 3A League winners.

“This past season has been one for the books for me personally. Lots of hard work was put in for these results to take place which started five years ago.

“It’s not such an easy task to take charge of an amateur club first team as players have work, study and family commitments, so keeping it all together takes a serious effort.

“The club has grown tremendously, I continuously had the support of the executive committee and the playing members and

special mention must be made of the squad that put in the hard work, it was so satisfying that when we experienced some ‘rough waters’ during the season, we stood together and achieved the impossible,” said winning coach, Manny Senger.

Senger (52) who started his coaching journey back in 1997 by doing Cricket South Africa coaching courses always had a passion for sport. He has been the man in charge for the

past five seasons.

It all started back in 2001 when he coached the club’s junior teams. He also had a stint as assistant coach for the first team in 2009.

In 2010 he was appointed as head coach of Paul Roos Gymnasium’s first team where he was in charge for four years before taking over the reins in Durbanville.

“In 2002 I started my own coaching business, Team Future Skills Coaching. The bu-

siness has grown into a very popular brand where we are actively involved in sports coaching in the Greater Durbanville area. I then got involved with WP Youth Cricket, was appointed u.11 coach and then went on to coach u.13-, u.15- and u.17 age groups,” said Senger.

The club will set the wheels in motion for the new season next month with planning for the season ahead and the winter pre-season preparation to start.
