octors at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital can now “see” and diagnose lung diseases in children without invasive surgery thanks to the donation of a specialised bronchoscope by the Rotary Club of Blouberg. The R3 million bronchoscope with a miniature radial ultrasound probe is the first such equipment in South Africa and the only one in Africa. At the official handover at the hospital on Thursday 23 January, Prof Pierre Goussard, Tygerberg Children’s Hospital clinical paediatric pulmonologist, explained that in the

past, surgery had to be performed by opening the chest to get samples and biopsies to detect any abnormalities in the airways of children. He says this new, less invasive technology now gives doctors the opportunity to go down the airway to get samples by using a 2mm needle. This procedure will be used on children between the ages of three months and 12 years old and is a vital tool in the management of lung diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) and cystic fibrosis as well as HIV-related lung disease, congenital lung abnormalities and complicated pneumonia cases.

The bronchoscope gives the paediatric pulmonologist the opportunity to visualise the pathology in the airways of the child, collect specimens for diagnosis and even intervene to re-establish a compromised airway in a child. Helène Visser of the Blouberg Rotary Club says the funds for the bronchoscope were raised through determination, collective fundraising with the help of local and global Rotary networks and a donation from the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust. States to be their international partner, who in turn invited 12 clubs in his rotary district to contribute as well as four Rotarians. The local Rotary Clubs of Goodwood, Tygerberg, Signal Hill, Claremont and Rotary District 9350 (Cape Town) also joined hands in this project. Visser also invited Dr Bettye Walker, a member of the Los Angeles Rotary Club and the peace facilitator for Rotary District 5280, and Prof Hildreth Walker, who was responsible for the operations of the lunar laser ranging system during the first moon landing, to become a major partners.
