Aadilah Ryklief, Bayside Mall’s centre manager, added that they continue to ensure that the mall is safe, secure, and clean by following stringent safety and hygiene protocols on an ongoing basis. “All trading tenants have their own safety and hygiene measures in place which includes sanitising of hands upon entering stores, disinfecting of trolleys, trolley bays and baskets and distance markers to ensure social distancing. “All staff have been issued with protective gear to further curb the spread of the virus and to keep them safe. he corner of Plattekloof and Tygervalley Roads alongside the N7 freeway is home to a new shopping centre – Richmond Park. The multibillion rand centre officially opened Richmond Corner, a prime corner spot in Atterbury’s new Richmond Park development on Thursday 23 July, boasting a variety of convenience stores. The new convenience shopping centre was only four weeks away from opening to customers when the national lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 struck in March. Construction on Richmond Corner started in May 2019, and was virtually complete when the lockdown began. Anchored by Pick n Pay, Woolworths Food and Clicks, the fully-let 6 500m² shopping centre will provide essential food, grocery, drive-through take-aways, and health and pharmacy retail, among other things. Richmond Park is a multibillion Rand mixed-use development by major shareholders which include Atterbury, Old Mutual Properties, the Richmond Park Communal Property Association (CPA) as well as Qubic 3 Dimensional Property, Bethel Property and Atlantis. Atterbury is rolling out the development of Richmond Park on behalf of the shareholders. Various shoppers attended the opening on Thursday, admiring the location and shops. One of the shoppers, Michael Cloete, said the opening of the mall could not come at a better time. “I live just around the corner and with Covid-19 and the curfew in place, visiting

S
inenjongo High School’s hall in Joe Slovo was petrol bombed on Wednesday 22 July, causing damage to school equipment and furniture. This as protests have spiked in recent weeks in the area, setting trucks and other vehicles alight. The Milnerton Community Policing Forum (CPF), on their Facebook page said that criminals are having a field day in Joe Slovo - in the name of “protests”. “This is not acceptable behaviour and members of the community are asked to step forward and make statements regarding the culprits of these arson attacks,” the post on Facebook reads.
The Milnerton CPF said a community meeting convened by ward 4 councillor, Wandisile Ngeyi, the police, law enforcement, Milnerton CPF and leaders of the Joe Slovo and Phoenix communities was held on Tuesday 14 July to determine a way forward regarding the state of affairs in Joe Slovo. “The Milnerton CPF condemns the wanton destruction of public facilities. “The perpetrators of these criminal acts are known to the people in Joe Slovo. “However, no one is willing to make the necessary statements to police in order to bring them to book as their lives are being threatened. “It is a catch 22 situation that needs a cautious approach,” the post reads. The police issued a statement last week,
saying they have reinforced deployments with crowd control capacity at identified hotspots in Cape Town following sporadic incidents of public violence that have seen destruction of property, barricading of roads, looting of a liquor store and stone throwing. One of these areas include Joe Slovo in Milnerton, where vehicles and buildings were damaged by fire and vandalism. Milnerton police spokesperson, Capt Nopaya Madyibi, confirmed that they received information that protestors planned to start fires in the area. “Due to this reason, additional resources from public order as well as the South African National Defence Force were deployed in the area,” Madyibi said.

Testing booths for Albow Gardens The Albow Gardens Clinic in Milnerton is one of 17 local clinics in the city with Covid19 mobile testing booths. The City of Cape Town recently introduced these booths saying it can be used on site at clinics or in communities and offer extra protection to those being tested, as well as those conducting the tests. The booths will aid efforts to increase the number of tests of vulnerable individuals who are at risk of more severe illness. It will also protect front-line healthcare workers. The City identified the challenges relating to constraints around personal protective equipment (PPE) availability, and in addition, wanted to increase the number of patients tested for Covid-19. While all clients are still screened for Covid-19 when visiting, testing is being reserved for the vulnerable who are at high risk of complications and may need hospitalisation, should they contract the virus. This includes: . People older than 55 who have coronavirus symptoms. . People under 55 with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension and have coronavirus symptoms. . Healthcare workers presenting with coronavirus symptoms. . People who live in a care or old age home and have coronavirus symptoms. The mobile testing booth is an innovative cost-effective solution to increase the capacity to test in the heart of communities in need. “Our new testing booths will allow us to conduct tests with an added layer of safety for both the person conducting the test and the person being tested. Importantly, it will allow us to save valuable personal protection equipment (PPE), as there is a worldwide shortage. The testing booths are designed for a single operator who will not need to don PPE while testing, although a surgical mask is still recommended,” said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. The tester will use special external glove extensions to reach out and perform naso-
pharyngeal swabs without any major difficulties. The external gloves are cleaned and disinfected before the following person is tested. Badroodien added that this is another way in which the City is trying to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

A large-scale campaign, which was launched two weeks ago, is hoping to “fill in the missing pieces of these men’s lives who until now have not received any recognition for their sacrifice by name”. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has identified more than 1 600 members of the South African labour units. Over the course of the war, thousands of black South Africans enlisted for non-combatant duties serving in various labour units including the Cape Coloured Labour Regiment, Cape Auxiliary Horse Transport, the Military Labour Bureau and the Military Labour Corps. The CWGC has released a set of names of specific people they need help in identifying. Liz Woodfield, CWGC director of information and communications, says more than a century after the war ended, not all the names of those lost from the ranks of the labour units have been recorded in remembrance. “We are looking at changing that, so that they can be honoured by name and their stories told.” The names and details of soldiers who have missing information are: . Wildlife park’s funds running out NETTALIE VILJOEN At the beginning of this year, things were looking up for the World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary & Monkey Park in Hout Bay. After years of tottering on the brink of bankruptcy, the park had finally fought its way back. And then Covid-19 happened. Hendrik Louw, the manager and coowner of World of Birds, explains that the park faced closure a few years ago after feeling the impact of an avian flu outbreak in 2017 and the water crisis in 2018. “We owed the bank nearly R1 million. Luckily, Astral, a poultry and feed company, came in about two years ago and assisted us with animal feed as well as the sinking of a borehole.” With Astral covering roughly R100 000 of the park’s R170 000 monthly food bill, combined with having had a good season last year, the park was able to recover. “We were in a position where we were saying, ‘wow, this is the first time in many years where we feel secure for the next two years’,” says Louw. That all changed when the national lockdown began in March. With no entry-tickets being sold, the park was forced to use whatever funds it had accumulated in the bank to cover its expenses. Under normal circumstances, this would be R750 000 a month. Louw says changes, including substantial wage cuts, were made immediately to reduce costs to R500 000. inning three trophies in one season (2018/’19) with the u.18 team of the amateur soccer club, Hout Bay Community United, and seeing the smiles on the faces of the players and the greater community was the cherry on Dominic Isaacs’ coaching career. The current coach of Cape Umoya in the GladAfrica Championship (national first division), Isaacs started his professional career as a soccer player at Ajax Cape Town in Parow, where he also spent the majority of his professional playing career. He also had stints in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) at Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic. “If I look back on my soccer career I have no regrets as I believe everything happens for a reason. I am thankful for my health, without it I would not have been able to achieve what I did for so long. Soccer has also allowed me to travel and to experience different cultures and ways of life and I was able to visit six of the seven conti-
nents,” he says. Isaacs started his soccer career at Parkhurst Ambassadors in Mitchell’s Plain. At the age of 17 he started playing for Ajax and turned professional. “I was at Ajax for (a total of) 10 years (2000 - 2008 and 2013 - 2015), Kaizer Chiefs for four (2008 - 2012), and a year at Bloemfontein Celtic (2012 - 2013). I finished my playing career at Ajax in 2015. After I hung up my boots I focused on coaching and that is how I landed in Hout Bay. In my playing days a lot of players influenced my career, but I prefer not to mention names, as there are too many,” he says. “I was privileged enough to represent my country as an u.17, u.20 and u.23 player. Other clubs, besides Parkhurst, that I played for in my youth career were Sea Point Swifts in Bonteheuwel and School of Excellence in Johannesburg,” Isaacs says. While at Ajax, he was part of that group of players that had to play second fiddle in the PSL and had to agonisingly surrender the trophy
on goal difference to Orlando Pirates in 2011. “It never feels good to get second place, especially after all the hard work and commitment you put in,” he says. Isaacs believes it is very important for former players to plough back into their communities, but with limited facilities available, he knows it can be challenging. “I learned many different things from each of the coaches at the different PSL clubs, some learnings I will always carry with me. To relax I listen to music, learn and research history and surround myself with people I can learn from. You know, we also had fun while playing. I can recall in 2002 at Ajax after every home win, we (David Kannemeyer, Muneeb Josephs, Shaun Oliver, Maya Jansen, Shaun Permall and I) would empty the dustbins and make it a gummy (drum) and sing Klopse songs for up to two hours in the cloak room until the kitmaster, Albert Hendricks, would shout at us to get done. Really special times,” he reminisces.
