Beam Improvement District and who worked with Van Rooyen, described him as a wonderful person, and a good friend. He was humble, hardworking and always prepared to help anyone, Pronk says. “He was passionate about fighting crime and we did many patrols together in the Montague Gardens area to assist in curbing crime. He was firm in his approach with homeless people, but was also the first to help if he could, going as far as buying a bus ticket
for one old chap once to reunite him with his family in George,” Pronk says. He says Van Rooyen will be sorely missed and that the Montague Gardens and Milnerton Ridge communities had lost a great activist. Last week TygerBurger approached the City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate to find out what safety measures they have in place to ensure the well-being of volunteers such as Van Rooyen. An honour patrol was held for him on Monday 24 June attended by Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, as well as Mlulami Ngeyi, councillor for ward 4.
