T

he ongoing roadworks on Bosmansdam Road in Milnerton have residents irate as they are caught in traffic jams during their daily commute.

Sanddrift residents also describe the site as an eyesore and nuisance.

The R20 million upgrade, currently in phase 2, is carried out by the City of Cape

Town’s transport department in partnership with the Rabie Property Group, to ease traffic congestion on this stretch of road.

Dr Minnie Lewis-Adams, a resident said that the road has been previously tarred, but was recently dug up.

“I would like to know why there are roadworks again? Did the company mess up with first round of roadworks last year or what is the issue? We as residents have not been informed of the roadworks currently taking

place and it seems it might take longer to complete,” Dr Lewis-Adams said.

According to the City, the roadworks is set to be completed by July.

“The project is scheduled to take eight months to implement, pending adverse conditions and unforeseen delays. The first phase was implemented between April 2018 and July 2019. While phase 1 entailed the construction of the eastbound two-lane carriageway, phase 2 will seek to rehabilitate

the existing westbound two-lane carriageway between Koeberg Road and Montague Drive. Traffic will be affected in both directions as only a single lane on the portion of the current westbound carriage way of Bosmansdam Road will be open during the construction period,” said Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase.

However, another resident claims that the roadworks are extremely disruptive.

Coronavirus upsets local fishing trade NETTALIE VILJOEN

hina’s halt on the import of all live and fresh products in January, due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus), has thrown West Coast fishing communities into crisis.

Reliant on the income from the export of West Coast Rock Lobster to China (which traditionally purchases up to 95% of the local total allowable catch of 1 084 tons), small scale fishers have seen the international price drop from the usual $30 to $40 per kilogram to a meagre $10 to $20.

Shamera Daniels, chair of the West Coast Rock Lobster Association (WCRLA), says that the price was as low as $0 four weeks ago when the association first engaged with the department of environment, forestry and fisheries (DEFF) on ways to support fishers affected by the dramatic drop.

The direct financial loss to rights holders is estimated at R257 million ($17 million).

But Daniels says it is suspected the final number will end up being much higher.

“This is only what right holders stand to lose. At this stage, we are not able to quantify the losses in income to factory workers and fishermen on the boats.”

She explains that WCRLA follows minimum wage requirements. Over and above that, fishermen earn a commission per kilogramme of lobster they pull.

“So the less they catch, the less they earn.

Then there is the rippling effect it will have on the people working in the packing and processing factories – and the shops in the communities. There is huge concern that the income of fishing communities will be drastically reduced this year,” she warns.

Just over a week ago, DEFF announced that it had extended the West Coast Rock Lobster season “in the hope that those most affected by the current drop in sales, will have time to make up for their losses”.

Barbara Creecy, minister of environment, forestry and fisheries, said: “The department is concerned about fishers and communities who have been adversely affected by this unexpected international event. Following consultation with the sector last week, we have decided to extend the nearshore fishery in the Western Cape until June and the Offshore and Northern Cape fisheries until September.”

In addition, DEFF allowed the amendment of permit conditions so that fishers in both WCRLA and line fish sectors will be able to land their catch over weekends.

The season, which usually stretches over four months, was supposed to close at the end of March. Daniels explains that the extension gives rights holders leeway in terms of their catching strategy. “They may want to wait a month or two before taking their lobster out of the water to see if anything shifts (on the international front) or they may take the view to get it out of the water now. Some of the factories are freezing the lobster. It is an individual decision.”

Daniels says it is difficult to predict what will happen next. She says, unofficially, market sources have indicated that China might lift its halt on imports in three months’ time, but there is no way of knowing for sure. “We are competing with other lobster exporting countries who are now also looking for alternative markets. For example, Australia also usually exports 95%

of their catch to China. Supply and demand dictate that the price could go lower.”

At a consultative meeting held with DEFF and stakeholders on Friday 14 February, WCRLA requested that the season be temporarily closed down.

However, there was no consensus on this appeal. Daniels says the reason for their request was twofold. “The closure would have meant that the scientific management measures, put in place to rebuild the resource, would be met and it would also have given the market time to recoup.”

She says there are people, desperate to put food on the table for their children, willing to sell at $10 to $20/kg. But, she warns, they should think long and hard before accepting this low price. “Before right holders even see the money in their pocket, they will still have to pay the fixed processing and catch fees. Selling at this low price is not viable.”

The possibility also exists that the international market will become accustomed to paying $10/kg. “We need to be careful that, as an industry, we don’t devalue our lobster.

We need to ensure that we maintain the price of $30 to $40/kg in the future,” Daniels says. DEFF has encouraged rights holders to explore alternative markets, including the local market, and to continue exporting frozen tails, albeit for a lower price than would normally be obtained for live lobster.

Daniels says that the difficulty is that they are not yet sure what local restaurants’ appetites are going to be.

“Will they be willing to meet export prices? And if they do buy it at a lower than usual price, there is no guarantee that restaurants will pass it on to the consumer.”

She said, “The roadworks have a severe impact on commuters returning from work or the school run to find they had been diverted around the town. It’s been causing havoc each morning and evening. There is a surprising amount of traffic via this route, especially in the morning during the school rush. The noise has also disrupted our peace at home.”

Purchase said that they have invested approximately R20 million in this project. Once completed motorists can look forward to a reduction in traffic congestion on this stretch of the road.

In addition, there will also be road closures on the westbound carriageway from Ratanga Road to Koeberg Road until July this year.

During these closures, vehicles will have a two-way flow on the recently completed eastbound carriageway with adjusted traffic signals and the required deviation signage along the route.

Phase 1 provided the transport link the capacity needed for two lanes in each direction, the second phase will repair the existing Westbound carriageway to increase its operating durability to at least another 15 to 20 years.

“I want to appeal to road users to be patient with us and try to find alternate routes to mitigate unnecessary delays, as far as possible,’ Purchase said.

oad-shedding has been blamed for the hazardous sewage spill in Bloubergstrand recently, raising red flags for local residents and tourists.

This after residents issued warnings on the Table View Ratepayers’ Association’s Facebook page that sewage, toilet paper and sanitary products washed out on the beach with an unbearable stench.

According to the Facebook post, residents notified the chairperson of the association as well as the City of Cape Town’ water and sanitation department of the sewage flowing onto the beach.

“The sewage flowed from the left of Blue Peter Hotel and Spanish Steps houses, the manholes at Small Bay just off Pelegrini Street and the manhole on the steps on the beach in front of Ons Huisie restaurant.

“Lawrence from water and sanitation immediately went to inspect and ensured that the Pelegrini sewage pump was switched back on. Residents reported that the sewage had been spilling over for more than 48 hours,” the post reads.

After reporting the incident, a suction pump truck was dispatched to carry out the clean-up of the contaminated water at the Blouberg beachfront opposite Café Blouberg.

tifies the authorities immediately that a sewage pump is down is a huge problem.

Even if load shedding is the cause for the pumps to trip, it should be mandatory that all pumps should be checked that they are operating after an episode of load shedding.

The sewage smell at the three new sites along the Bloubergstrand beachfront was very evident. We are not aware if the City has carried out any tests to see if the sand or water is contaminated or what the plan of action is.”

Speaking to TygerBurger, nearby beachgoers said that the stench of raw sewage is still in the air, which means that the beach was not properly cleaned.

“The signage is not enough to warn residents that the water is polluted. This is unacceptable.

“If load shedding is a problem, they should put better infrastructure and plans in place to prevent incidents like this; not to mention the health concerns as well,” a resident said.

Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for water and waste, said the pump station at Bloubergstrand failed temporarily due to load shedding, which resulted in a sewage spill.

Limberg added “Both coastal management and city health departments sent staff to the site on Saturday (22 February) and Sunday (23 February). The City monitored the area and the cleaning process continued on Monday 24 February when the tide was low.”

Limberg explained that pump stations are fitted with telemetric alarm systems to allow teams to respond when an incident occurs. Alerts triggered via the telemetric systems at pump stations are sent by radio.

However, transmission and reception has been slower during load shedding.

“Even with mobile operators rerouting to other towers, to compensate for battery theft or low capacity of batteries at towers, there has been an impact on these systems associated with load shedding,” Limberg said.

The City has installed pollution warnings at the site to notify beachgoers of the polluted water.

The high risk clean-up of two tanks at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station last year, raised some red flags with concerns about disposal of the contaminated water.

The refuelling water storage tanks have been in use to store contaminated radioactive water for approximately 40 years and needed to be thoroughly cleaned before they were demolished and disposed of, as they were due for replacement.

Concerned resident Rodney Dart questioned how the contaminated water from the clean-up was disposed of.

“There must have been a considerable amount of remaining particles that could be radioactive from the inside of the tank in the water used in the clean-up to be disposed of,” Dart said.

However, Koeberg Power Station manager, Velaphi Ntuli, confirmed there is no danger. “The water that was originally stored in the tank was re-used by following a water management and movement plan

specifically developed for the project. After the tank was emptied of the stored water, the internal surfaces were decontaminated. The method and technology used was aimed at optimising the amount of water used, and existing plant pipework were then used to receive the decontamination water,” Ntuli explained. This water contained the radioactive substances removed during the decontamination process from the internal wall surfaces of the old tank and was routed to the liquid waste treatment system. It was treated and cleaned to levels where it can be safely discharged without an impact on the sea life and population in the area. Ntuli added, “Any water released from the plant is monitored for radioactivity, before the release, as well as during the release, to ensure the relevant limits, as prescribed by the plant nuclear license, are complied with.” The project was undertaken under contract from Lesedi Nuclear Services and required the Averda team to thoroughly clean two stainless steel tanks that stand 20m high and 12m wide.

Schizophrenia can be treated RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj October has been declared Mental Health Awareness Month in South Africa. Yet, despite this, mental disorders are something many people still stigmatise and discriminate against, a reader who suffers from schizophrenia recently told the newspaper.

Bantu Zotwana, who has been living with this condition for the past 23 years, now visits schools with the hope of changing this perception.

TygerBurger spoke to a registered counselling psychologist and lecturer in psychology at the University of the Western Cape in order to help understand this illness.

Mariska Pienaar concurs that it is a stigmatised illness.

“In order for persons to feel comfortable seeking help, it is also important to address the societal stigmatisation of the disorder, which is often fuelled by misconceptions of the illness.

“For example, there is a common misconception that persons suffering from schizophrenia are prone to violent acts.

Research has in fact found that persons suffering from schizophrenia are 14 times more likely to be the victims of violence themselves, than to commit violent acts.”

Schizophrenia is a severe and potentially very disabling mental disorder.

It is a psychotic disorder which causes significant impairment in one or more major areas of one’s life, such as work, in-

terpersonal relations, or self-care, says Pienaar.

“A person diagnosed with schizophrenia will suffer from hallucinations, delusions, or both.”

Other symptoms may include diminished emotional expression, lack of motivation, lack of pleasure or interest in things, disorganised speech and abnormalities in movement such as overactivity or rigidity of the body, Pienaar adds.

According to her, most persons who develop schizophrenia will do so between the late teens and mid-30s.

“While exact causes of schizophrenia are not known, research suggests that a combination of physical, genetic, psychological and environmental factors can play a role.”

The illness can however be treated.

“While schizophrenia is a serious mental illness which has thus far not proven to be curable, the primary symptoms of the disorder can be managed relatively well with anti-psychotic medications, which sufferers may need to take for the duration of their lives.

“The illness is also treated through psychotherapy,” Pienaar says.

People who suffer from the illness can find assistance at public or private psychiatric clinics, psychiatric divisions of hospitals or psychiatrists in private hospitals.

pening its doors in 2008, the Milnerton Baseball Club has vowed to help the less fortunate to learn the sporting craft.

This initiated a programme aimed at the youth of Dunoon, with plans in place to have a drive towards promoting baseball in the surrounding areas.

Coach Jared Ratner said the youth started off knowing nothing about the sport and ended up competing against some of the strongest clubs in Cape Town.

“This has been nothing short of miraculous. Watching the kids grow from strength to strength has been an awesome experience. The joy on their faces when they won their first game after struggling week in and week out has made this programme all worthwhile,” Ratner said.

The club, which welcomes new players from all walks of life, is self-funded and receives no money from any federation, government department or private organisation.

Two years ago a conscious decision was made by the club to keep a consistent programme running for the children coming out of the Dunoon area.

“We tried introducing this to other underprivileged areas, but the financial obligations were too much for the club to bear.

However, this season has been our most successful season yet running this pro-

gramme,” Ratner explained.

Currently training and playing at the Theo Marais Sports Complex off Koeberg road in Milnerton, the club provides transport to the junior kids from the Dunoon area to all trainings and all games.

The teams are registered in the Cape Town Baseball Federation (CTBF) leagues in their various age categories.

Ratner added, “Competing in a league against other teams has really been a wonderful experience for the boys. They get to travel to parts of the city and meet people they would never have met.”

He said the youth does not only get to learn the sport, but they instil lifelong lessons as well.

“As a coach, I want to be more than just someone who teaches the boys how to throw, catch and hit a ball.

“Although we come down to play and train baseball, I want the clubhouse to be a place where these Dunoon boys can come and feel safe.

“As part of our programme we are requesting the boys to bring down their school results so we can monitor their progress at school and provide assistance where we can.

“Baseball has taught me a lot in my life, it has taught me discipline, respect, patience and to stay humble in all situations.

These are the values I’m trying to instill in my players,” Ratner said.

Houses razed in Joe Slovo fire KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

A

t least 46 houses and shacks were burnt down in Joe Slovo over the weekend, leaving 133 residents home-

less.

The blaze, which ravaged through the informal settlement has devastated families in Joe Slovo with no food, clothing and a roof over their heads.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire.

The aftermath of the fire left tears rolling, as the affected residents lost all valuables in the blaze and have already started clearing the area to rebuild.

had not managed to salvage anything.

“There were 25 shacks on the property which burnt down, including our family home. My family, who lived in the house, lost everything. It all happened so fast and there was no time to take clothes or food. The wind also made the fire worse, which spread to other shacks and houses. Luckily no one was hurt.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us so far,” Fernandez said.

The Gift of the Givers and a representative from City of Cape Town disaster management team arrived with food, clothing and blankets for the victims of the fire.

According to the City’s fire and rescue service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, they received a call at 14:36 on Saturday afternoon, 29 February.

“The cause of the fire is unknown. There were no fatalities. Two firefighters suffered from heat exhaustion and were treated on the scene. The fire was extinguished at 18:32,” Carelse said.

According to the City’s disaster risk management centre spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, the affected residents decided to stay with family and friends.

Powell added, “The City’s informal settlement management department will issue starter kits to residents to rebuild dwellings once the fire debris has been removed. The City’s disaster risk management centre has informed Sassa of the incident to provide humanitarian relief.”

Safra Levin, a resident who has been assisting the community after the blaze, said it was truly heart warming to see the community standing together to help despite them not having much themselves.

“I’m a little shocked after my visit there.

Donderdagaand het twintig deelnemers aan die halfeindronde van TygerBurger en Delush se Karaoke soos ’n Sterkompetisie deelgeneem en tien finaliste het na die eindstryd op 28 Maart deurgedring.

By Donderdagaand se vertoning het die sangers liedjies uit verskeie genres gesing.

Die klanke van Whitney Houston tot Ariande Grande het in studio 3 van Atlantic Studios in Montague Gardens opgeklink. Die kompetisie was straf met deelnemers uit verskeie van TygerBurger se verspreidingsgebiede wat soos engele gesing het.

Curro brings musical treat to Woordfees C

urro Create, Curro Holdings’ national creative initiative, will be presenting its riveting new production, From Broadway to Bird Street at the Toyota US Woordfees in Stellenbosch in March.

Showcasing songs from top shows from around the globe, such as Les Misérables, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors and Hairspray, and compiled and directed by renowned theatre-makers Hennie van Greunen and Pedro Kruger, the show promises to be a musical treat.

For this performance, 22 top Curro performers have been chosen from 360 auditions at Curro

schools nationwide – among them learners from Durbanville.

Their mentors (and fellow cast members) impressively include Timothy Moloi, Corlea Botha, Lynelle Kenned, Germandt Geldenhuys and André Terblanché.

“What makes this different to any other Broadway-inspired show you’ve ever seen, is that the songs are all placed in context – where does it fit into the story – and the performers will be in full costume and make-up, with astounding choreography, and brilliant sound and lights, in order to truly give you a slice of what you may see in one of the sumptuous Broadway theatres,” says Van Greunen.

Curro Create was launched in 2018 in partnership with Wordsmith’s Theatre Factory and aims to give all Curro learners the opportunity to showcase their creativity across a broad scope of disciplines.

Compiled and directed by experienced theatre-makers Van Greunen and Pedro Kruger, with Melissa van der Spuy as musical director, the show promises to be a treat for those who enjoy the magic of musicals.

There will be three performances – on Saturday, 7 March at 16:00 and 20:00, and on Sunday 8 March at 11:00.

Joshua, ’n musikologiedosent by die US, het pas ’n meestersgraad in musiek met onderskeiding voltooi. Hy spesialiseer in musiekbegrip en die empiriese studie van musiekemosies.

Moenie ander mense sonder rede vrees nie Gister sien ek ’n Chinese ou by ’n winkelsentrum en ek stop in my spore.

Verskillende dinge flits deur my brein.

My oë fokus soos ’n skerpskutter op sy vyand. Ek doen berekeninge. Hoe ver is die afstand tussen my en my motor. Hoe vinnig beweeg ’n virus van die oomblik dat dit jou mond verlaat tot dit die teiken bereik? Hoeveel mense het reeds verby die man gestap en toe ook binne ’n armlengte van my gekom? Is almal rondom my nie dalk besmet nie?

Ek begin te sweet, want ek beweeg met krukke. In my lewe het ek al te veel flieks gesien waarin die gewonde aan sy eie lot oorgelaat word. Niemand sal ’n beseerde dra as hy weet sy eie lewe is ook in gevaar nie. My hart klop vinniger as wat dit moet ...

Alles was nie so dramaties nie, maar hoe vinnig kan ons nie besluite neem oor goed waarvan ons eintlik baie min weet nie? Ek het ’n ou van Chinese herkoms gesien en onmiddellik het ek gewonder of daai ou nie dalk die koronavirus onder lede het nie.

In alle waarskynlik was hy jare gelede dalk in sy tuisland en is (hopelik) net so skoon soos ek en jy.

Maar ons weet nou waar die virus sy oorsprong het en daarom sê ons breine daardie mense móét die virus onder lede het. Dit is natuurlik die grootste klomp twak.

As kind op die platteland het ek nooit met mense van die Moslem-geloof in aanraking gekom nie. Nie omdat ek nie wou nie of my ouers my van hulle weerhou het nie. Ek weet nie hoekom nie, maar in daardie geweste was die Moslem-geloof so skaars soos reën. As ek reg onthou, is ons ook by die katkisasieklas teen die “Mohamedane” gewaarsku.

Op hoërskool het ’n vriend van my ons vertel dat daar een aand ’n Moslem-ou by hulle aan huis oornag het en met sy vuil hande geëet het. Hierdie idee het in my kinderkop vasgesteek dat Moslem-mans met vuil hande sit en eet.

Fast forward jare daarna en ek is in die Kaap en hier ontmoet ek van die wonderlikste mense met die lekkerste kos en hulle eet – wonder bo wonder – net soos ons.

Ek lees onlangs ’n aanhaling wat soos volg lui: As jy nie die nuusmedia volg nie, sal jy dink die wêreld is ’n wonderlike plek. As joernalis het dit my nogal aan die dink gesit.

Ja, ons moet ingelig word sodat ons ingeligte besluite kan neem. Ons moet weet dat Amerika dreig om Iran aan te val en dat die oorlog in Sirië onverpoos voort word. Dat kinders in ons veelbewoë land vermoor word. En die vader weet ons moet weet dat daar ’n virus is wat min mense verstaan en wat reeds die dood van duisende veroorsaak het.

Maar ons moet nie mekaar bang maak nie. Die meeste vrese waarmee ons opgeskeep sit is oor goed wat iemand ons vertel het. Ek byvoorbeeld is doodbang vir ’n hond, maar ek is nog nooit deur een gebyt nie. Toe ek ’n klein laaitie was, het iemand my vertel van hoe sekere hondrasse byt en nie laat gaan nie. Van daai tyd af trek my lyf styf as ek net ’n hond sien.

Ons sien politici kap maar gedurig oor ras, maar as ons daaraan dink, is hulle ’n minderheid. Hulle kuier net met mense wat dieselfde oor sekere goed dink, dus leer hulle nooit hoe ander mense dink nie.

Aan die ander kant is ons gewone landsburgers elke dag in mekaar se geselskap en leer dat as jy ’n mens is, is jy net dit – ’n mens.

As dit nie bona fide besighede is nie, wil ek my naam nie hê nie. Sowat 25% van elke kollekte wat in kerke opgeneem word, sal Eskom maklik uit sy penarie help, met nog genoeg geld oor vir ander dinge.

Ek sê niks oor stelery nie, maar neem maar net aan dat hulle die geld reg sal gebruik. Ek tref ook nie onderskeid tussen kerke nie.

Long wait for AA irks motorist On Thursday 13 February, I was stuck on the N1 near Century City for more than three hours waiting for the AA to do what they said they would do.

I phoned no less than 10 times in that period. Appar-

ently they were in a meeting and the emergencies on the road would have to wait.

I have a record of every phone call and they have the recorded conversations. I phoned the first time at 13:00 in the afternoon. I got the assurance that someone would come to my aid and a reference number. I quoted that number with every phone call.

The agents that answered could access the situation immediately with every call and knew who I was, so it was not a mystery to them, yet every AA technician in Cape Town was in a meeting and they could not help me until 16:14, when the help finally arrived.

I have still not had an apology from them. They did ask me to rate their service. I gave them 0 out of 10.

They still have not phoned me to ask why.

I really think they could at least have phoned by now to find out what happened or to apologise.

Less water and still charged fixed rate?

I refer to the article about Mr Grobler from Peerless Park East (“Confusion over borehole water”, TygerBurger 26 February).

I am in total agreement with his confused and disappointed attitude in which his situation has been dealt with.

Here is an honest citizen trying to conserve water in the best way possible. Yet he is treated unreasonably.

Whether he uses less water or not he is still charged a fixed basic charge.

Where does “This City fights for you” come from? He still has no reply yet!

If one applies logic to this situation then one must ask

oneself, how does borehole water re-enter the grid, when exiting via the sewerage?

Maybe the Mayco member for water and waste should check what chemicals are used in the blue/green toilet block when added to the current grid water in household cisterns. This chemical remains in the cistern until dissolved and goes the same way down the sewerage as Mr Grobler’s borehole water does.

Borehole water is a natural entity that may have silt/brak in its contents.

I think the fixed basic charge has a lot to do with the “confusion”.

Ek het nog nooit ’n brief aan ’n koerant geskryf nie, maar wil ook my stuiwer in die armbeurs gooi na aanleiding van die afgelope tyd se briewe oor die Reedstraat-kliniek in Bellville.

My lêer was nog nooit weg nie en ek het nog altyd goeie diens by die apteek gekry – veral by die eenheid waar jy jou pakkie kroniese medikasie tussen 07:00 en 10:00 kan afhaal; dit werk uitstekend.

Wie die briljante dokter is van wie “Nog ’n Brakkie” in 26 Februarie se brief (“Apteek se diens by kliniek is treurig”) in TygerBurger praat, wonder ek.

Die vrouedokter lyk of sy omgee vir die pasiënte, maar die manlike dokter het al die vreemdste goed vir my gesê.

Hy wil eers elke drie jaar jou cholesterol toets, al gebruik jy medikasie daarvoor. So, sterkte aan almal wat van die kliniek gebruik moet maak.

Reaksie ná berig ‘asemrowend’ Ek verwys na die artikel “Swemlesse vir seniors ‘bevrydend’ ” in die TygerBurger (05/02) en wil hiermee namens die Proteaville Senior Fiksheidklub vir Nielen de Klerk baie dankie sê vir die uitmuntende artikel daaroor.

Die reaksie wat ons ontvang het, danksy die foto’s en berig, was asemrowend.

Daar was soveel belangstelling, veral van seniors, vanuit verskeie areas.

Tans is daar meer as 50 leerders wat die swemlesse baie geniet.

Die afrigter, Arnold Terhart, moes vinnig hulp bykry en Gregory Bagley en Carol Abrahams word bedank vir hul bereidwilligheid om hulp te verleen.

Attorney makes it count AVRIL FILLIES

T

he need for primary school learners to understand the fundamentals of mathematics is the reason why attorney Mierwhaan Manan is sharing his knowledge.

Manan grew up in Heideveld, but now lives in Summer Greens. For the past three years, he has given extra maths lessons at Heideveld and Athwood primary schools in Hanover Park.

“You don’t need to be tech-savvy to understand maths, science and computers. All you need is a pen, a lot of paper, a bin (for the scrap paper with the mistakes) and determination,” he says.

He says nobody gets everything right the first time, you need to make mistakes and learn from it.

Manan has a BSc (maths) from the Washington and Lee University in America, a management degree from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), a LLB from the University of the Western Cape that he completed in a record time, and a postgraduate diploma in legal practice (UCT).

“Between my BSc (maths) and LLB degrees it is difficult to choose as I love both disciplines.”

Why law after a degree in mathematics?

“Initially. I was interested in environmental law and because I was in information technology I became interested in internet law; of how contracts are concluded when everything is being done online.

“Furthermore, at my previous employment (Pathcare) I became the chair of the staff association which impelled me towards disciplinary hearings and hence an interest of criminal litigation. At the same time, I became chair of the Pathcare Retirement Fund which gave me a keen attentiveness in social security law. So the law discipline became a natural progression,” he says.

Manan says often primary school teachers

are not trained in maths.

“The primary school math/science teachers should attend a class where they are taught all the essential ground rules in the syllabus,” Manan says.

He says it takes a village to raise a child and there is a need for maths intervention in primary schools.

“The damage that is done in primary school from teachers who are not equipped to teach maths is difficult to undo, and students struggle with basic concepts and develop a dislike for the subject,” he says.

“Students struggle with maths and science because there is not enough repetition and cementing of fundamentals at primary school level and concepts that teachers don’t understand themselves are skipped or they are taught incorrectly.”

Manan is a partner at Samuels and Manan Attorneys (S&M Attorneys).

“In the mornings I am in court and in the afternoon I try to help at a school, teaching maths. Sometimes I have a student at my house and at night I do legal research and prepare for the next day. This is how I combine the two,” he explains.

His role models growing up were his mom, Salega Manan, and his late dad, Abduraghmaan Manan.

“My dad woke up early every day and went to work in a factory as a presser at Rex Trueform. I learnt to get up, show up and have a good work ethic. God bless his soul.

“My mom was a dressmaker and worked from home. She made the house a home with love, open communication and respect. She was also a disciplinarian. She is a difficult act to follow, and I am still learning from her as she lives with me,” he says.

Manan went to school at Heideveld Primary, which included Standard 6 at the time.

Thereafter he spent a year at Cathkin High School and for his senior high school, he attended Trafalgar High School.

He says he had a few teachers who were vital in laying his foundation.

“At Heideveld Primary School, I had Edmund Swartz and Trevor Armstrong; they taught me something new every day. You have to learn something every day. At the end of every day, one must be bigger and more than you were when you woke up that morning, that’s how you grow.

“At Trafalgar High, I had masterful teachers in maths – Victor Parry and Goosain Emeran – and in science, Saleh Adams. These teachers were nothing short of giants in their fields.”

Manan grew up in Heideveld and lived there for approximately 30 years.

“We were six, later seven siblings in a oneand later two-bedroom council dwelling (in a court of flats). With nine individuals in a two-bedroom dwelling, it was interesting, exciting and challenging at times,” he says.

According to Manan, learners or students’ willingness to get an education and plough back into their communities is linked to their moral convictions.

“For me it is paramount. ‘Umntu ngumntu ngabantu’. We are because of others, so you can’t just take, you have to give back. I am reminded that ‘it is when you give of yourself that you truly give’ (Kahlil Gibran).

“So, let the season of giving be yours, give your expertise by ploughing back into your community. That is the right thing to do,” he says.

In the past, Manan and his business partner, Labiek Samuels, donated an hour of their time every week on the radio, advising the community on legal issues.

Today he assists in mathematics at primary school level because he feels that’s where the need is the greatest. Some afternoons he gives math classes, but work sometimes gets in the way of his intention to reach out to learners.

“The one thing I would change where I currently live in Summer Greens, Milnerton, is to get the ward councillor to budget for a library and then run maths and chess classes from there. Kids will then have a place to study, learn and have some type of fun,” he says.

Manan says it is so satisfying to see the lights go on in a student.

“The sight of a student getting excited about some new-found knowledge is priceless.”

Going back to whether mathematics and law are mutually exclusive, Manan says, “I would concede for the most part they are, however, mathematics is about rules and the application thereof and the legal fraternity is about laws and the function thereof.

And life is about rules/laws and the usage thereof. It would, therefore, appear that mathematics, law and life are all about a higher power and the submission to it.”

Athlete ambassador for bone health The National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa (Nofsa) recently appointed their brand ambassador for 2020.

Lee-Anne Freeland-Hughes (29) from Parklands was appointed on 19 February at the Nofsa offices in Durbanville.

She is a runner who is taking on Comrades for the fourth consecutive year, a physical education teacher at CBC St John’s Parklands and a member of the Melkbosstrand Athletics Club.

“Being the only non-profit health organisation dedicated to promoting lifelong

bone health in South Africa, Nofsa is dedicated to increasing awareness of Osteoporosis,” says Tereza Hough CEO of Nofsa.

Lee-Ann has always been an active achiever, receiving the coveted Victrix Ludorum award at Jan van Riebeeck High School in Cape Town.

After leaving school she stopped her exercise regime and developed severe depression.

Lee-Anne realised that regular exercise would be her saving grace. She now follows a healthy lifestyle and will be representing Nofsa at her own runs as well as at the Nofsa annual winter ball and moonlight fun run.

Lee-Anne has won the ladies division of the Nofsa 5km fun run in 2018 and 2019 and completed the race in under 21 minutes.

“There is a common misconception that osteoporosis only affects older people and you need to follow a healthy lifestyle from an early age to support your bones,” says Lee-Anne.

uan Theart (17) from Parklands will be travelling to Spain later this year to take part in the Salou Cup from Saturday 27 June to Tuesday 30 June.

Currently in Grade 12 at Blouberg International School, he hopes to be scouted and selected by a top European club.

“My goal for next year is to try and get scouted, if not by one of the international teams, then a professional local team, to play professional football. I will let God lead the way,” he says.

Nuan, who plays for Maitland-based club FN Rangers (FNR), was selected for a regional team after attending a two-day trial where boys from all over Cape Town came to try out.

Nuan also received the top goalkeeper award at the u.20 Ikapa Tournament in December last year, a tournament where his FNR u.18 team also finished runners up.

He also received the coaches award last season from Kyle Januarie of the senior first team at FNR, which Nuan says was a humbling experience.

Vanjaar se nie-winsgewende organisasie wat baatvind uit ’n gedeelte van die inskrywingsgeld, is die Cape Town Drug Counseling Centre. Hierdie sentrum bied ’n buitepasiëntprogram waaraan pasiënte van alle ouderdomme en hul families kan deelneem.

Voornemende deelnemers kan aanlyn inskryf by www.topevents.co.za voor of op Vrydag 13 Maart of ’n inskrywingsvorm voltooi by enige van die Sportsman’s Warehouse-takke: Canal Walk- winkelsentrum, Rondebosch, Seepunt, Somerset-Wes, Tokai, die Weskus en by Tygervallei.

“It shows how hard I have been working towards my goals. Being a goalkeeper is a specialised position. I can’t imagine the feeling of walking onto the field in the Salou Cup in Barcelona, representing our country as goal keeper for the team. It is a dream I had for many years. It would mean the world to me, and if I get scouted for an international scholarship to play for an international team, that would be like a dream come true,” he says.

But before jetting off to Spain, Nuan will be lacing his boots up for the Bayhill Premier Cup in Belhar next month after he helped FNR’s u.19 team qualify for the annual showpiece for the first time in the club’s history.

“Nuan has been working extremely hard to develop his skills with the help of all his awesome coaches and club. Nuan has been working extremely hard with fundraising to cover the expenses of this trip.

“Well done Nuan. Don’t ever stop believing in your dreams. Hard work always pays off,” says his mother Cresna.

New look for Power Series The Power Series presented by Wingfield Motors at Killarney International Raceway gets a whole new look for 2020, starting with Round 1 on Saturday 7 March.

To spice up the entertainment there has been quite a radical change to the program, with shorter periods between the category races.

That means racing will start much earlier, at 08:15, with eight-lap races in the morning for the Formula Libre Single Seaters, RST Trac Mac Powersport Motorcycles and RST Trac Mac Clubmans bikes.

The Powersport ranks have been swelled by the addition of Motard maniac Franco Flach on a Kawasaki ER650 and Gauteng refugee Dominic Penny.

The newly-renamed Cheaper Cars GTi Challenge will be led by Nian du Toit (Allied Fibreglass Jetta 3 2L), Marco Busi in the Automan Polo 6R and the Wingfield Polo Vivo of Jano van der Westhuizen.

Fabio Tafani is still the man to beat in the V8 Masters one-make series, although Marcel Angel, Richard Schreuder and Sean Moore are likely to have something to say about that.

The biggest field of the day belongs as usual to the Mikes Place Clubmans, with 36 entries in six classes.

At the sharp end, however, you can expect to see Danie van Niekerk in the Wingfield E36 battling it out with Clint Rennard and Michael le Sueur’s giant-killing New Engineering Golf Mk1.

Nevertheless, watch out for veteran Jesse Huggett and Mansoor Parker’s BMW E30.

The most unpredictable events of the day are likely to be the Superbike races.

In the absence of defending title-holder Brandon Haupt, attention must shift to 2019 Western Province 600cc Champion Kewyn Snyman.
