SEXUAL ASSAULT: HIGHEST IN 10 YEARS
Crime spikes in Milnerton KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
T
he Milnerton police station has been listed as one of the top 30 police stations where sexual assault cases have been reported. This after police minister, Bheki Cele, released the national crime statistics on Friday 31 August for the period of April 2019 to March 2020 showing which types of criminal activity have increased – and decreased – in the past year. Sexual assault cases in Milnerton have increased to 34 in the 2019/2020 financial year – the highest reported cases for Milnerton in
10 years. Although shoplifting in the Table View area decreased, reported cases in Milnerton spiked to 509 compared to 403 last year. The Milnerton area has since seen a decrease in commercial crime from 558 in 2018/2019 to 514 in 2019/2020. Nationwide, the total of 15 893 murders which were recorded in 2010, soared to 21 325 in the 2019/2020 financial year. According to residents on Facebook, protests in the areas have contributed to the increase in crime, with damaging infrastructure and assaults. One of the local ward councillors in Milnerton, Fabian Ah-Sing, said the increase in
crime in ward 55 is worrying. “I have supported our neighbourhood watches for many years and ensured they have the equipment they need. It is frustrating that despite the efforts of all neighbourhood watches within the ward, our crime stats have increased. We have a lack of effective policing within ward 55. We need more police officers with associated resources such as patrol vans and we need police to tackle prostitution, illegal shebeens and drug dens which are known to the police. Those are the three biggest contributions to crime in our area especially in Koeberg Road which must be dealt with by the police. This is what the police are supposed to do
and if the police do not deal with these matters effectively, then we will not be able to see a substantial decrease in crime,” AhSing said. Laura Outhet from the Table View neighbourhood watch, said to get an accurate representation of the crime in the area and district, they rely on the people who have been victims of crimes. “Many crimes are not reported at all, so it’s difficult to get a true figure. Many victims choose to not lay charges even though the perpetrator may have been caught or identified. We urge the members of the public to report all crimes to police,” Outhet said.
