There’s been a growing sense of unrest among taxi permit holders and operators in Cape Town.

A few members of the Maitland Taxi Association vented some of their frustration last week when they spoke candidly to TygerBurger about their uncertain future.

With the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system rapidly gaining momentum, virtually every operator is feeling the pinch in their pockets.

Those who spoke to this newspaper insisted, however, that they are not against the MyCiTi project – as long as they get clear answers to

what their future holds.

One of the operators quantified their loss in revenue when he explained that before BRT, he had about six or seven loads of passengers a day, but this has recently dwindled to just two loads.

Sixty-year-old Elliot Racaza, who’s been involved in the taxi business since 1977 explains: “I’m so worried about my children and family. I’ve never worked for other places, just taxis. Then, people coming from yesterday want to take my life? Who’s going to employ me now with my age? Now the government want’s to chase me out? We are so frustrated...”

Kidrogen was established as an umbrella company to deal with four taxi associations along the west coast: Maitland Taxi Association, Du Noon Taxi Association, Ysterplaat Association and Blouberg Taxi Association.

Zeliograph, with Hoagi Valli at the helm is an interim company, which was formed to represent specifically Maitland. This is the body responsible to relay information to its members, but according to the operators, the information they get is sketchy, to say the least.

Operator Ikraam Adams elaborates: “Mr Valli is being paid by Kidrogen R15 000, R20 000 a month, yet we, as the company he repre-

sents, don’t know anything! We don’t know where we’re going!

“And the city is turning a blind eye.”

Valli on the other hand, says they have regular meetings twice a month.

“Some members don’t even show up, but I have all the minutes of the meetings, and if a member of the association takes the correct protocol then they can view these minutes to find out exactly what we discussed,” he says.

As for the city, Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater says there is a clear plan as to what the future hold for permit

holders.

Says Herron: “The city, through its engagements with the directly affected association representatives agreed to offer minibus-taxi operators fair compensation for their operating rights as well as an allowance for the surrendering of their taxis.

“The operators who accept the city’s offer of compensation are invited to use at least some of their compensation to buy shares in the Vehicle Operator Companies formed by the directly affected taxi associations and scheduled bus operators who will operate the buses for the MyCiTi service.” . Having a go at golfing

Die verdagte moordenaar van die 73-jarige Hester Robberts van Monte Vista is inderdaad vrygelaat, volgens ’n woordvoerder van die Goodwood-gevangenis.

In verlede week se artikel, “Moordverdagte skotvry”, het die vermoede bestaan dat die persoon vrygelaat was, maar dit kon nie bevestig word nie. Die verdagte het Robberts in 2010 in haar huis verwurg en het verskeie kere in die Goodwood-landdroshof verskyn voordat die saak teruggetrek is.

In die vorige berig het Robberts se skoondogter, Riana de Wet, haar familie se nimmereindige nagmêrrie vertel.

Dit sou egter veel erger gewees het vir die familie as dit nie was vir die sekuriteitsbeamptes van District Watch wat so vinnig op hul hulpkreet gereageer het nie.

“Hulle is van die beste reaksie-eenhede wat daar is! Hulle het vir ons ongelooflik baie beteken in daardie tyd asook tot op hede. Dié mense wat ons deurgedra het en die misdaad so goed hanteer het, het elke dag te doen met menslike dramas, en hulle is die rede hoekom ons nog in die area bly,” sê De Wet.

Heartfelt concern for the many disadvantaged children in Cape Town was the motivating force behind hundreds of tiny jerseys being knitted ahead of the cold season.

The staff of Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, Netcare N1 City Hospital and Charisma Healthcare Solutions lovingly crafted the much-needed jerseys, which were recently donated to crèches in Dunoon.

Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital manager Dirk Truter, who admits that he has yet to take up the art of knitting, explains that the initiative came about on Mandela Day (18 July) last year when Charisma Healthcare Solutions challenged the hospitals to a knitting duel in aid of needy children.

The winning team could donate all the jerseys to a charity of their choice.

“I identified three guys who showed some potential and interest in the sport,” Van Zyl says.

“One must remember that these guys have never held a golf club or hit a golf ball. They play soccer or maybe rugby,” he added.

The group were also showed what it takes to manage a golf club and its accompanied hospitality services.

“We feel these talented youngsters must be exposed to not only the game of golf but also the various employment opportunities within our golf club industry.

Accused ‘murdered and set alight victim’ ANDRÉ BAKKES

‘City must help rid us of bulrushes’ Last Thursday chairman of the Paarden Island City Improvement District (PECID) Les Hotzhausen handed over the petition with 2 133 signatures to city manager Achmat Ebrahim.

Holtzhausen submitted the petition on behalf of the PECID, its members, all Paarden Island industrialists and their employees, the Friends of Paarden Eiland Wetlands Group, residents of Brooklyn, Rugby and other surrounding areas, as a plea to the City of Cape Town to take urgent remedial action to clear the bulrushes from the wetlands also known as Zoarvlei.

Over the past 10 years the incapacity to successfully manage the wetlands has seen bulrush (Typha Capensis) growth intensify at such a rate as to swallow up the precious water bodies.

“The resultant dry reed beds have attracted illegal campers, provided a haven for criminals and given easy access for dumping loads of trash,” says PECID manager Patricia Tallant.

The dramatic drop in bird life is indicative of a dying wetland system, which was once home to hundreds of species of waterfowl and other creatures.

“The annual spreading of pollen from the bulrushes has a detrimental effect on those

suffering from allergies and the seasonal dispersal of seeds blocks air-conditioners, settles on office, workshop and factory equipment, and is a constant source of disruption and aggravation to workers and residents,” Tallant says.

Despite co-operation between PECID, the Friends of Paarden Eiland Wetlands and the Zoarvlei Management Committee, little successful effort has been made to improve the situation.

“Total eradication of the Typha Capensis is not expected, but the water bodies need to be opened sufficiently enough to encourage the return of creatures to their natural habitat and to be able to offer visitors to the Zoarvlei something other than dry reed beds, filthy campsites and the odd pool of stagnant water,” Tallant remarks.

The city manager was asked to intervene in what the PECID term “an impending conservation disaster”.

“Those in authority must be called upon to halt the degradation of this purported ‘green lung’ and to make the Zoarvlei an attractive spot for the people of Cape Town and beyond,” Tallant says and adds that it should begin by first diminishing and then controlling the growth of bulrushes.

After reading the petition and perusing the accompanying photographs and signatures, Achmat Ebrahim accepted the concerns and suggested a team be put together to work with the PECID and other relevant role players to improve the current state of the wetlands.

The 18-year-old boy who was arrested for stabbing and setting alight a Brooklyn resident last weekend appeared in Cape Town’s Magistrate’s Court, and the case was subsequently postponed to 21 June for further investigation.

The burnt body of Neil Daniels (36) was found in a field near his home last week Monday.

His father, Reverend Casper Daniels, has in the meantime said that Neil might have been murdered because he was gay.

Spokesperson for Milnerton Police, W/O Daphne Dell, says however that this claim cannot currently be verified.

“Investigations have not led to any clear motive yet,” she elaborates.

The body of Daniels was discovered on the Monday night by a neighbourhood watch member in a reed-filled area in Milnerton called The Vlei.

According to a newspaper report, three witnesses saw how he was stabbed.

Dell elaborates: “Members on the scene extinguished the fire. Upon investigation it was found that the deceased also had several stab wounds on his upper body. A case of murder was registered and is currently being investigated by the Serious and Violent Crime Unit at Milnerton police.”

Meanwhile, lengthy sentences were handed out for a vigilante killing in Du Noon.

Spokesperson for provincial police, Lt Col Andrè Traut, says he is hopeful that others will learn from this and realise that the community cannot take the law into their own hands, because by doing so, they become criminals themselves.

In March members of Milnerton police were summoned to a murder scene at the Du Noon Community Hall. On arrival members came across a group of residents gathering next to the body of an unknown male whose hands and feet were tied up against a fence with wire.

Traut elaborates: “Two bricks with blood stains were discovered close to the victim, and it became apparent that the victim was killed in cold blood. It was later established that he was accused of having stolen a cellular telephone, and upon this suspicion he paid with his life.”

Investigations led to the arrest of nine suspects, who were all sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for their role in the victim’s death. The accused are Bongani Tebe (25), Mfusi Jonas (31), Thobile Swennu (22), Siyabonga Gandlela (35), Bandile Bomoyi (20), Mpendula Yekelo (26), Thembekosi Nkohla (30), Nonela Maseko (19) and Sindezama Mtsolonkgo (30). . Nederigheid is die duiwel se oorkussing!

Hopelik besef jy dadelik hierdie opskrif is verkeerd! Maar dit is hier bo met ’n rede. Dit is die opdrag van ’n groep spesiale mense met wie ek nogal baie tyd deel. As jy nou mense soek wat vir jou hoop uitdeel as dit donker is, letterlik en figuurlik, is dit dié spesiale mense.

Met hulle, of met die meeste van hulle, deel ek die meeste oggende die sweet en moeite van die hardlooppad.

Min of meer elke oggend, so rondom vyfuur se kant, kom reën, kom hael, kom wind (nou nie regtig altyd en almal nie!) vat ons die pad en hardloop die omgewing, in ’n radius van so vyftien kilometer rondom Hoërskool Stellenberg, plat. Party stap nou wel meer as die ander, maar nogtans ... Vir my, wat al 27 keer die Comrades voltooi het, en nou nie meer so ver wil of kan hardloop nie, en reeds van 1977 so ongeveer 120 000 kilometer gehardloop het, is hierdie groep spesiale mense die medisyne wat my gees die laaste agt jaar gesond hou.

Hierdie manne en vroue hou my voete op die grond, en op die regte pad, en my kop skoon.

As jy vir ’n dag of drie nie opdaag nie, is hulle die mense wat vir jou dreigemente per e-pos en SMS stuur. Dis hulle wat jou jammer kry (meeste van die tyd darem) as jy ’n besering het. Met hulle kan jy hartseer deel en nuwe

uitdagings bespreek.

Dit is mos eintlik ledigheid. Ja, ledigheid soos meneer X, en Y en Z, wat nie te gereeld opdaag nie – hoop hulle sien hierdie beskuldiging! Maar waarom nederigheid? Kyk, as jy saam met hierdie manne en vroue die pad vat moet jy ’n dik vel hê! Hier is nederigheid nou nie die kenmerk wat jy moet wys nie, maar eerder dikvelligheid.

Vandag is ek seker dat iets wat beskryf word in van een die mooiste hoofstukke in die Bybel daagliks gebeur tussen ons klompie. Hebreërs 12 praat van die skare geloofsgetuies, wat self die wedloop gehardloop het, en ons ander nou aanmoedig en hoop gee om te hardloop tot by die wenpaal. Sonder dat dit ooit nodig is om vir mekaar te preek weet ons klompie vroeg soggens dat ons eintlik die wedloop van die Lewe saam met mekaar hardloop. . Humiditeit is ook baie belangrik en die wyn moet plat lê sodat die kurk nat bly.

“Kurk is ’n natuurlike produk wat asemhaal. Die suurstof bind met komponente in die wyn, wat help met die smaak. As wyn nie plat gestoor word nie, kan die kurk breek, wat die smaak sal beïnvloed.”

The Milnerton Canoe Club (MCC) recently celebrated its 30-year anniversary since it moved to Milnerton Lagoon.

The cocktail party was attended by four of the five honorary members, seven chairpersons and over 30 of the approximately 60 members who have been awarded national or provincial colours.

Much has changed since the nostalgic days of 1982.

These days there are far fewer sideburns and not a single short shorts to be seen.

The current secretary of MCC, Chris Anderson, says he’s been at the club for almost 20 years.

He doesn’t have much to say about the changing times, because for one he was too caught up in the serene surroundings.

“Nature is one of the things that really stands out when one canoes. It is obviously an extremely disciplined sport and one must

practise almost constantly. It is also a great way to socialise,” he says.

Anderson doesn’t know how many members were at the club when they moved from Woodbridge Island to Milnerton Lagoon, but he does know the interest in canoeing has been growing year on year.

“We now have over 250 members of which the oldest is over 70 years! The club itself has produced provincial, national and even world champions.”

According to chairperson, Russell Ikin, the club is open every Sunday from 10:00 to 11:30 for members of the public to come down and try canoeing.

“We also encourage schools to make use of our facilities and if they would like to start canoeing as a sport, we will accommodate them by making all the required equipment available,” he adds, before concluding that the active development programme was initiated in 2008.

“Ons sal graag ’n vennootskap wil sluit met ’n hotel. Toerusting om ’n vak soos hotelbestuur aan te bied, is baie duur, maar as ’n hotel bereid is om een van ons praktiese klaskamers vir die doel te kom inrig, sal dit wonderlik wees. Tygerberg Zoo finally closing gates DESIREÉ RORKE

There will be no zoo left in the City of Cape Town, once the Tygerberg Zoo finally closes its doors at the end of November.

A disheartening thought for a city of international stature, but nonetheless an unavoidable reality for owner Lorraine Spence who is struggling to make ends meet.

The 24-hectare land located just off Klipheuwel Road in the vicinity

of Joostenbergvlakte, was recently sold for an undisclosed sum to an agricultural machinery company.

According to Spence, high maintenance costs and diminished visitor numbers over the years have forced her hand. She added that she owed the City of Cape Town a small fortune.

“At one point our rates and taxes climbed over the R4 000 mark – in an area where we received no services.

“With time and the continual maintenance of the zoo it became impossible to keep up,” she said.

The zoo was started by her deceased husband John Spence 33 years ago, and back in the glory days it was brimming with hundreds of visitors.

“Back then a visit to the zoo was still part of the school curriculum and buses of children were brought here for educational purposes,”said Spence.

Pak die skuld op die skuldige Hoekom word die hond of leeu altyd doodgemaak as hy iemand ernstig beseer of doodbyt? Meestal het die dier bloot binne sy aard as roofdier opgetree, nie uit die bloute ’n moordenaar geword nie.

Is die vraag nie eerder: Hoekom was dit vir hierdie dier nodig om soos ‘n “moordenaar” op te tree nie?

Soos in verlede week se geval toe ’n vrou in Uitenhage se arm bykans deur ’n boerboel afgebyt is, kan die vinger meestal in die rigting van die eienaar gewys word: die hek was nie behoorlik toe nie, die hond was nie aan ’n leiband nie, die heinings was nie dig genoeg nie.

Maar nee, te dikwels kry veral groot honde nie genoeg aandag nie of is nie goed genoeg gedissiplineer nie , wat tot die dier se ongelukkige optrede – en sy dood – lei.

Op grond hiervan alleen, maar veral wanneer ’n hond iemand byt, behoort eienaars swaar beboet en onbevoeg verklaar te word om ooit weer ’n hond aan te hou.

Is dit bloot omdat so iets amper onmoontlik is om te polisieer, dat die hond altyd aan die kortste ent trek? ’n Verantwoordelike, liefdevolle troeteldiereienaar se hond sal selde gedwing voel om iemand aan te val, of die vryheid hê om dit te doen.

Ons pleit by ons lesers om hulle diere lief genoeg te hê om nie toe te laat dat hulle iemand aanval en met die dood daarvoor moet boet nie.

Dumping puppies says a lot about you It was with sheer and utter shock that I read the article in last week’s newspaper (“Seeking cute pups’ mum”, TygerBurger 6 June) about an animal charity looking for the owner of dogs whose pups were abandoned.

The five puppies were found on a sheet on the doorstep of a church and one of them didn’t survive the ordeal.

Just looking at the photo of three of the puppies in the newspaper gives one a warm, caring feeling. It is hard to imagine that any person could be so heartless to leave the small dogs to fend for themselves.

The cold and wet weather and the fact that all five puppies could have died as a result of his or her actions, clearly didn’t cross the mind of this cold-hearted person.

Look, I understand that people might not have the means to look after another three dogs when they already have one. There are ways to deal with such a situation. Adoption, a newspaper advertisement or even a free internet advert could have helped the “dilemma” the owner of the puppies clearly found

himself in.

Instead, it was easier to dump the puppies and forget about them. And this breaks my and I believe many other peoples’ hearts.

If you don’t want puppies, have your dog spayed. If that is too much of an effort or you are not interested in spending the money, you are not worthy to be a dog owner.

Just like you and I, dogs feel the cold, they too get hungry and they too feel rejected.

They say you can tell a lot about a man by the company he keeps. This is especially true when you are talking about the company of the furry, four-legged kind. The type of dog a person has, and how he treats it, reveal a lot about that person. And this sort of action tells me exactly what type of person we are dealing with here.

Adopt-a-Pet appealed to the owner to call them to have the mother sterilised and I do hope that this time the coward will have the guts to come forward and do the right thing.

Waarom al die padklagtes?

Oral waar ek in my omgewing ry, sien ek konstruksie aan paaie. Veral die rehabilitasie van Strandweg tussen Blackheath en Kuilsrivier, blyk ’n groot projek te wees. Nou weet ek dat as dit by ons paaie kom, het almal klagtes oor die toestand daarvan, tekort daaraan en sommer net die algemene instandhouding van ons paaie. Ons vra dat daar iets aan gate in die paaie gedoen word, of meer bane geskep word. Dus vind ek dit nou verbasend dat die Stad Kaapstad ons paaie verbeter en daaraan werk, daar nog klakouse is, wat kla oor die verkeersdruk op die paaie waar konstruksie plaasvind. Onge-

duld en verontagsaming van padtekens in konstruksie-areas is nou aan die orde van die dag. Mense, kom ons wees net geduldig.

Kom ons handhaaf die spoedgrense op die paaie waar konstruksie plaasvind en kom ons gee ander motoriste geleentheid om by paaie aan te sluit. Te veel motors jaag in areas waar die spoedgrens duidelik as 40 km per uur aangedui word of ongeduldig word as ander by die spoedperk hou. Uiteindelik is dit ons, die padgebruiker, wat by die verbeterings gaan baatvind.

Ek wonder nou net hoeveel van ons geliefde Suid-Afrikaners se harte groot genoeg is om sodanige Gesindheid te verwelkom, te aktiveer en te implementer?

Ego-funksionering kan rêrig nogal destruktief wees, of dit nou in ‘Groot Ego-’ of ‘klein ego’-formaat gebeur.

Ons wipplank met soveel gemak tussen Arrogansie (ek weet beter) en Hulpeloosheid (ek kan nie), dat ons nie eers agtergekom het dat die spiraal afwaarts in plaas van opwaarts neig nie.

Hoe bou ’n mens nou ’n gesonde nasie met so ’n sig-sag-slingerbestaan?

Dié van ons wat ver kan sien en diep kan hoor en gewillig, gereed en gerat is om hande te vat om Suid-Afrika te laat werk, moet dalkies moed bymekaarskraap en begin aksie neem.

Daarvoor gaan nie net Geloofspronge nodig wees nie, maar Geloofsvlugte.

Esther ‘more than just a beauty show’ “This is more than just a beauty pageant,” says director of Esther Project, Nicole Nyota Kalenga.

Both pageants achieved packed audiences, community performers, sponsors as well as a semi-celebrity judging panel and the MC for the evening was none other than Hectic Nine 9’s presenter, Laurian Scribe.

Board member of Esther Project and business analyst at Woolworths, Ilse Osterthun, comments on the interest Queen Esther beauty pageant has had since it sparked: “The passion and enthusiasm of the project is highly contagious. We have been approached by other initiatives based in other communities and people from other parts of Cape Town wanting to do the same project in their communities.”

She adds, “We are making plans to grow this programme, in fact, our two-year plan widens our interest from Brooklyn to the Cape Town Metropole area.”

Through sincere appeals for sponsorship and funding letters, Esther Projects was able to attract the interest of funders such as the prominent Table Bay Hotel, the Body Shop, Afro Corner Hair Salon, Jay Jays and Umoja Sewing School.

Contestants, all aged between 13 and 22, were predominately from the Brooklyn area and have been attending workshops in preparation for the pageant.

They will continue attending an aftercare programme which will be commencing soon.

“Esther Project is a tool we are using to help young women unlock their talents and resources they possess in themselves.”

The much-anticipated Queen Esther Beauty Pageant was held recently in Brooklyn.

Fifteen charismatic girls eagerly awaited the crowning title of Queen Esther 2012 in what was a glamorous finale.

The pageant featured participants showcasing their talents, modelling fashionable designs and engaging in a tough question and answer session, where contestants had to answer questions adjudicated by a panel of judges on their ability to articulate strong replies as well as their leadership abilities.

The pageant is inspired by the biblical story of Esther, the slave girl who became a heroic queen when she saved her nation from unthinkable dangers.

In the end, the judges agreed that the best candidates who embody the true quintessence and character of Esther were Ezzy Kingston, along with first princess Carlile van Rooyen and second princess Jaydee Jansen.

The pageant, which was initiated by the Grace a la Grace Church, made its first appearance in 2011 – then known as the Miss

Ready to rock after time­out LOUISA STEYL

Snare van die Suburbs are back.

After a year’s silence, the boys have been working hard on their live performances and are gearing up to do some big things in the near future.

Christopher Palmer, the band’s frontman, explains that he was away for work during this time.

“When we got back we decided to work hard on our live shows for three months,” he says.

The band are also enjoying a fuller sound thanks to the addition of guitarist, Manfred Klose.

“Manfred brings the live performance,” says drummer, Pierre Erasmus.

Snare van die Suburbs will start recording their first fulllength album in September in Ladismith with Jo Ellis.

The band are also heading into new territory, trying to play venues they haven’t played before.

Pierre points out that the band would like to take their acoustic sets to wine farms and other similar venues.

“We pride ourselves on the

fact that we can do an acoustic set well,” Chris says, pointing out that they are a “rock ’n roll” band to start off with.

In the two months they have been back on stage, Snare have played Die Boer, Rabbit Hole, Blizzards, Hidden Cellar and Aandklas.

With sponsorship from Bondiblu, the band also have band merchandise available at their shows.

Chris says along with working on their live performances, Snare have also been working on their sound.

“We are trying to be more professional than we were,” he says.

No mean feat when three of the members have day jobs as teachers.

Chris is a primary school teacher, while Pierre will be teaching high school from next year and Nico Claassen, the band’s bassist is a high school teacher in Hermanus.

“There’s a difference between being in a band and being an artist,” Pierre says, adding: “We want to go for the artist thing.”

Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the

hippopotamus continue their efforts to get back to New York after escaping to Africa.

However, dependent on the mechanical know-how of the notorious chimpanzees and penguins, their plan inevitably goes awry and they find themselves stranded in Monte Carlo, where they only manage to dodge animal controller Captain Du Bois by joining a travelling circus.

CT jazz meets The Elephants forms part of a multifaceted bilateral collaboration between France and South Africa which will be jointly organised by both countries, concentrating on culture and the arts but also including sport, trade and novel approaches in the fields of education, science and business.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is a partner as part of the 16 June Youth Day Celebrations.

The French season in South Africa continues through November and will be followed by a South African season in France between May and December 2013 in which the Big Time Band will travel to France.

On Youth Day concertgoers will also be entertained by young Cape jazz artists: the Oceanview Youth Jazz Band, Ceres Crusaders, Stellenzicht Youth Band, Line Up and African Sky from Saldanha Bay and Omega Brass Band from Mitchells Plains, in the foyer prior to the show.

The show starts at 15:00 and tickets cost R70 or R60 for pensioners.

There will be discounts for block bookings and for groups of learners.

Two spooky twists CBC St John’s will present Dark Moon, two ghostly one-act plays, on Thursday.

Dark Moon is a production by the CBC St John’s Parklands drama club under the guidance of the very accomplished Marinda Claasen.

The two one-act plays were workshopped by the members of the drama club and both are rooted in folklore with a spooky twist.

The first one, called The Flute Player, is set in early colonial Cape Town and Tales from da Shadows ft. Tiana is a contemporary setting of an old ghost story.

The production will take place on Thursday 14 June at 19:30 at the Milnerton Playhouse.

With prizes to the value of R35 000 up for grabs, the competition will run until the end of the year.

Entries for the first two rounds have already closed, but bands can still enter for 10 more rounds.

Entries for round three and four close on 2 July, while round five and

six entries close on 30 July.

If you miss those dates, there is still a 3 September cut off for rounds seven and eight and 1 October for rounds nine and 10.

The semi-finals will be held on 7 and 28 November, with five bands performing on each night.

Six bands will move through to the finals on 5 December.

Kuilsrivier het ’n ewe goeie oorwinning van 39-19 oor Collegians behaal en Hands & Heart het met 34-29 deurgeskuur teen Primrose, maar Goodwood (12-15 t Pniël Villagers) en Brackenfell (19-46 t Helderberg) het dit hotagter gekry. Old Boys a real crowd puller This year the Milnerton Old Boys (MOB) will host their third annual old boys rugby tournament at NNK Rugby Club in Parow.

The tournament will be held over the weekend of 5 to 6 October.

The MOB have had to move the location of the tournament due to the increasing success of the tournament, and the increase in interest from old boys’ unions around the Western Cape.

The MOB will have a huge task on their hands if they are to defend their title for the

third successive year.

This year sees interest from some of the bigger unions which include Fish Hoek, Paarl Boys, Wynberg and Bishops. These unions will join the likes of Milnerton, Table View, Fairmont, Bosmansdam, DF Malan, Rondebosch and SACS. Jon en Cobus stof die bestes uit Jon Williams (Panorama) en Cobus Vrey het die afgelope naweek 2012 se Toyotahandelaars-Gauteng-tydren gewen in hulle Sasol Ford Fiesta S2000.

Altyd op die agtervoet en met ’n veel kleiner begroting, het Jon en Cobus (Brackenfell) skouer aan die wiel gesit om die S2000motor beter te leer verstaan.

Ironies genoeg was dieselfde Toyota-handelaars-Gauteng-tydren in 2011 die absolute laagtepunt vir span Sasol. As gevolg van tekortkominge in die organisasie is die tydren uit die SA kampioenskap-punteleer geskrap en het dit beteken dat Mark Cronjé (Sasol Ford) sy SA titel moes afstaan aan die Zimbabwiër Conrad Rautenbach. Jon en Cobus het boonop hul motor in hierdie tydren gerol.

2012 het egter nuwe hoop gebring deurdat Mark Cronjé en Robin Houghton beide vir die Sasol-span die toer Natal en Sasol-tydrenne algeheel gewen het. Toe hulle tydens die derde ronde teenspoed ervaar, was Jon Williams en Cobus Vrey opgewasse vir die stryd en kon die gewilde Kapenaars daarin

slaag om met die louere weg te ry in hul Sasol Ford Fiesta S2000.

Beide is veelvuldige WP kampioene in eie reg. Na afloop van die naweek se Toyota-handelaars-Gauteng-tydren beklee hul die algehele derde plek op die punteleer met vyf rondes om te voltooi.

Om die Wes-Kaap-sukses verder te vier, was Jean-Pierre Damseaux (3 x WP-tydrenkampioen en seun van 10 x SA en 17 x WPtydrenkampioen Serge Damseaux) in ’n algehele derde posisie vir span Total Toyota.

Sy navigator was Grant Martin.

Dan was SA se suksesvolste Zoeloe-tydrenner, Gugu Zulu, en sy Kaapstad-navigator, Carl Peskin, boonop die wenners van die S2000- uitdaging in hul BP Ultimate VW Polo 4x4. Sebastiaan Klaassen en Cindi Harding (ook beide van die WP) het die sesde posisie algeheel ingeneem met hul Monster S2000 Ford Fiesta.

Jon en Cobus sal tussen 11:00-12:00 Saterdag tydens die Kenilworth-sentrum se tydrenmotor-uitstalling (15-17 Junie) teenwoordig wees om die pragtige Sasol-tydren plakkate te onderteken.
