MILNERTON: DRIFTERS FROM ACROSS THE CAPE CONVENE FOR MAN UP CAMPAIGN
Gearing up for Man Up RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
D
rifters from across the Cape convened at the Atlantic Film Studios in Montague Gardens, Milnerton last week to show their support for the Man Up campaign – a campaign aimed at encouraging young men to circumcise and to condomise. The campaign’s event, held on Wednesday 7 March from 20:00 to 23:00, took the form of a special edition car show where the Man Up drift car belonging to Malikah Daniels, wife of Good Hope FM DJ Ready D, was launched. The car underwent a makeover to help spread the message of the campaign, organisers say. “Man Up is an awareness campaign which encourages young men to volunteer for medical male circumcision because it is more hygienic, it reduces a man’s chances of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted deceases and it also reduces the risk of cervical cancer for their female partners,” says Melissa Phera, spokesperson. She says the evening was a great success, with car enthusiasts and fans from all over Cape Town in attendance. Some visitors, she says, came from as far away as Paarl to attend the event. “More than 600 people were present and about 25 cars showed off their performance,” Melissa says. The park-off was hosted by the duo David Isaacs (“Boeta Gamat”) and Oscar Petersen (“Boeta Joe”) from the theatre production Joe Barber. “David was the first to drift in the newly wrapped Man Up car, driven by Malikah,” says Phera. Ready D kept the crowd entertained with music, she adds. The Man Up campaign was launched through the Community Media Trust. The campaign has had a successful run since its inception in 2017 and has helped create awareness and provide information about the benefits of voluntary medical male

Many South Africans actors and artists have supported the campaign, including Chad Saaiman, Christian Bennett, Quanita Adams, Khaya Mthetwha and Thembi Seete, to name a few, Phera says. “Working on the Man Up campaign is a
humbling experience as it is a great opportunity for us to learn about the health-related challenges that men face. We feel that the education and awareness need to reach the full spectrum of our communities,” says Ready D. Medical male circumcision is a procedure
that takes 15 to 20 minutes under local anaesthetic. It is quick, safe and free, Phera says. V To book a safe and free circumcision, SMS your full name to 35255 and a trained counsellor will call you back. Alternatively you can WhatsApp Man Up on 064 877 9051.
