he recent temporary redeployment of Colonel Dirk Vosloo, Table View Police Station commander, to the Nyanga police cluster, has been met with mixed emotions.

TygerBurger learned from a reliable source last week that Vosloo, with more than 30 years of experience in the police, will be stationed at the Philippi East Police Station for the next few months. The Nyanga cluster consists of six police stations, including Philippi East. The others are Bishop Lavis,

Elsies River, Gugulethu, Manenberg and Nyanga itself.

A mass shooting in the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East recently claimed the lives of 18 people. The area was also in the media spotlight following a visit by national police minister, Fikile Mbalula, as a result of the massacre.

Last week, Captain Adriana Chandler, Table View police spokesperson, confirmed the move taken by the provincial commissioner (Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula) to have Vosloo redeployed.

“It (the redeployment) was a senior management decision,” Chandler says.

Asked if any other police members or vehicles will be sent to this area, Chandler said no.

According to a source, however, this is not the case. Two members as well as a patrol vehicle are also set to go.

Asked for more details, Chandler kindly requested that further queries be directed to the police’s provincial offices based in Green Point. TygerBurger contacted the offices and was guaranteed a response, but we are still awaiting comment.

According to David Harris, chairperson of the Table View Policing Forum (CPF), the redeployment of additional members is said

to be on the cards. He says a vehicle is also scheduled to go.

“To lose two CPU (Crime Prevention Unit) members and another vehicle will put our police under severe pressure to deliver on their constitutional duties to the community of Table View,” Harris says.

Harris adds that police resources in Table View are already cut to the bone.

“Adequate policing in Table View is already below the level of service delivery as per the constitution of South Africa. To take more resources away from Table View police aggravates this situation.”

popular bar and restaurant at the Milnerton Mall on Koeberg Road has once again come under attack by a group of armed robbers.

The target – twice in just over a month – was The Lighthouse on Loxton Bar and Grill and its Café Loxton.

TygerBurger reported on the first attack in August in which a 60-year-old cashier was attacked by three men (“Three rob Milnerton pub”, 30/08).

The cashier was assaulted and robbed of cash before his attackers fled. CCTV footage of the attack was also shared via social media.

A few weeks later, an ATM at the Kwikspar at the same mall was bombed. The suspects fired shots at an alarm response security officer while fleeing the scene. The guard fortunately escaped unharmed.

On Tuesday last week, another group attacked, the police say.

Craig Pedersen, project manager at Milnerton Crime Watch, says the attack occurred at around 21:00.

He says four men entered the Milnerton

Mall from Loxton Road and approached the night security guard on duty, threatening him with a firearm.

The guard was relieved of his radio and locked in a store room, Pedersen says.

“The four suspects then proceeded to the bar and restaurant where they held up the staff at gunpoint, making away with the contents of the cash register and some sundry items,” Pedersen says.

The suspects fled on foot via Loxton Road and into Koeberg Road.

“It is possible they had a vehicle waiting nearby. CCTV footage was viewed by police and clear images of the suspects were provided to the investigating officer. No shots were fired and no injuries reported,” says Pedersen, an expert in safety and security.

Pedersen recently issued a warning to business owners to be extra careful with their cash from September and throughout the festive season, (“Expert: Careful with your cash”, 27/09).

“Again, this is not out of pattern for this time of year, hence our recent caution to businesses around heightened security through to the early December period.

A taxi driver who recently robbed a female passenger and tried to sexually assault her after she climbed into his vehicle has been linked to other similar cases committed in the Table View and Milnerton areas, the police say.

Captain Adriana Chandler, Table View police spokesperson, says the driver – a 26year-old man from Philippi – faces two charges of rape.

TygerBurger reported on the suspect’s latest attack on a woman last week (“Taxi driver who robbed passenger is jailed”, 04/10).

The man appeared in the Cape Town Mag-

istrate’s Court on Wednesday 4 October.

His appearance follows his arrest two days before. This comes after information on his vehicle, a silver Toyota Avanza, was circulated via police radio following the attack on the woman, which occurred on Friday 29 September in Parklands.

“Once she got in, he told her ‘today you got into the wrong taxi’. He said he was armed with a firearm, which he did not show,” Chandler said at the time.

The suspect attempted to sexually assault the passenger.

She was forced to withdraw cash at an ATM in Bothasig before the driver released her.

Captain Nopaya Madyibi, Milnerton police spokesperson, confirmed the attack.

She says the police are now searching for the group of armed robbers.

She says the police met one of the complainants who informed them that they were about to close shop when the men attacked.

“The victim, fearing for his life, complied with the instructions of the suspects, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash registers and safe. Before fleeing the scene, the suspects took alcohol from the shelves,” Madyibi says.

She says that on the way out the men also robbed a 70-year-old man of his cellphone and scarf. The victim described one of the suspects as being between 20 and 25 years of age.

“The concern we have as an organisation is that a few times now, Table View police resources have been taken from our station and redeployed, but we have never received replacements for the staff that were redeployed.

“With this redeployment we will not only be losing Vosloo, but two other police members that must go with him.

“As a community already understaffed by police resources, every time a good person is taken and not replaced, we as a community lose out.

“We hope that this time it will not be the case that the positions remain vacant and other resources in the team are just expected to pick up the void.

“Table View Neighbourhood Watch will give our full support to whoever is appointed in the position to assist as best we can. The watch believes we play an integral role in the prevention of crime in the area,” Page says.

Despite all this, though, the watch wishes Vosloo all the best of luck.

“The neighbourhood watch is very sorry to hear about the redeployment. In our opinion we believe it is a huge loss to Table View and the surrounding areas.

However, we wish him well and we know he will be a huge asset in his new role. Vosloo has always had a vested interest in this community and wanted the best for it,” says Page.

Harris concurs.

“Colonel Vosloo has been redeployed to head up an intervention team in the Nyanga Cluster for a period of six months. I believe that the colonel was redeployed as he is a successful station commander with a lot of experience. He was previously station commander at all three police stations in Khayelitsha.” . Table View police will have an acting station commander for the six-month period.

Chandler said two rape cases have been opened against him.

She said he is also being linked to four cases of robbery, four charges of kidnapping, two of sexual assault, and two other rape cases which are currently being investigated.

The first case was reported in August, according to police.

The suspect remains in custody and will appear in court again today.

“The detective informed me that he was also beong sought on a rape case in Bellville, for which he will be appearing in court,” Chandler says.

deserted house, which has been an eyesore for residents of Curlew Street in Brooklyn, has finally been sold.

The house was until recently used as a hideout for suspected drug dealers and a shelter for vagrants.

During an evening walkabout and visit to the house on Friday 18 August, the results of the degradation could be clearly seen.

Rubbish was strewn in front of the house, as well as inside. Most of the walls were dilapidated and the ceiling breaking apart, while the toilets and bathrooms were damaged (“Keeping eagle eyes on Brooklyn”, 23/08).

The house has been a thorn in the flesh, especially for the Brooklyn and Ysterplaat Neighbourhood Watch, which has been dealing with crime issues emanating from there for some time now.

At the time the watch and its executive committee indicated that the matter had repeatedly been reported to the City of Cape Town’s Problem Buildings and Law Enforcement units.

Last week, however, Cheryl Castle, chairperson of the neighbourhood watch, informed TygerBurger that the house had finally been sold.

Peter Landsberg, deputy chairperson, says that although they are unaware of who bought the house, they are happy.

“With regard to when the house was sold or to whom, we have no idea. We only received the information about the sale when we patrolled past there about a week and a half ago and saw a rubble-filled skip outside the house.

“Upon further investigation, we saw that a major clean-up operation had begun inside. Yes, there are still various homeless people occupying the premises, but it appears that they, too, are involved with the

He adds, however: “A future concern would be what happens with these current ‘tenants’ as they had allegedly been occupying the premises with the knowledge of the previous, now deceased, owner. Not implying that all of them are involved in anything illicit, but would they now move on to somewhere else to further carry out any illegal activities?”

That being said, whatever the future plans are for the property, it will become the new owner’s responsibility to assist these people in finding alternative accommodation, Landsberg feels.

“We as residents are just grateful that this problem was highlighted and that it now appears to be receiving constructive attention,” Landsberg says.

. The Brooklyn and Ysterplaat and Maitland neighbourhood watches recently joined forces with Maitland police and Law Enforcement to conduct an anti-crime operation in Brooklyn and Maitland.

“Once again, the importance of cooperation between the various authorities and neighbourhood watches was highlighted.

Various hotspots were visited and a range of fines were issued. Arrests were also made for certain crimes,” says Landsberg, a longserving member.

He says the neighbourhood watch will continue to collaborate fully with others in combating all sorts of crime and working towards a safer environment for all in their community.

Parklands’ very own Pythagoras excels at Olympiad RICHARD ROBERTS

F

or most people, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing is a task that requires some time – a minute, often more.

For Parklands College Grade 11 learner Emile Tredoux, however, mathematics and its often complicated brain teasers is as simple as 1, 2, 3.

Emile recently took part in the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) and was awarded a national medal for his achievement by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) at a ceremony held at the Krystal Beach Hotel in Gordon’s Bay recently.

The college says it is extremely proud of the young man’s achievement.

Emile has achieved outstanding results in both the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Olympiad, as well as the South African Mathematics Foundation’s Olympiads

throughout his high school career, says Sylvia Steyn, principal of the secondary faculty.

“This year he represented South Africa in the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad where he and his team won bronze. Most recently he competed for Western Province in PHOTO: SAMF the Interprovincial Mathematics Olympiad, where they won gold,” Steyn adds.

Emile also competed in the final round of the Programming Olympiad held at UCT this past weekend.

At the SAMF annual awards ceremony he was a top 10 medalist in the senior division (Grade 10 to 12).

“Emile is a brilliant mathematician who is also always willing to share his gift with his fellow learners though peer tutoring.

We see a bright future for this humble genius,” says Steyn.

The SAMF awards ceremony was held on Saturday 23 September.

Zanele Ncongolo, SAMF spokesperson, says the Western Cape once again dominated the evening with 10 national winners this year.

Ncongolo says the SAMF programmes, such as the prestigious SAMO, are used to select and train learners for international competitions.

The Summer Greens Market Day was held recently and was well supported by both young and old.

The market, which took place on Saturday 30 September, was held at the local community hall.

Organisers say the event was a buzz of excitement.

Over 25 stall holders had something on offer for everyone, offering a range of handmade craft items, clothing, toys, sweet treats, African beaded work, perfumes, jewellery and a range of delicious foods to mention but a few, says Raquel Croeser, Summer Greens Market Day Committee member.

“This market day was well supported and we had two fundraising stalls – Cornerstone

Youth in Brooklyn, which raised over R600 towards their upcoming camp by selling second-hand toys, and Habibul Islam Madressa, which sold delicious foods and raised R3632 which will assist with purchasing textbooks, workbooks and school benches and aid with end-of-year school outings for the children.

“This was an outstanding achievement,” says Croeser.

A huge part of hosting these market days is bringing the community together under one roof, she says.

The next Market Day will be held on Saturday 28 October.

hat she saw after police stormed into a dark, dingy room at a house in a town in the Northern Cape more than four years ago is forever etched into her memory.

Sue Reynolds*, now living in Brackenfell, was present during a sting operation, when police discovered a room full of young children and teens, kidnapped, drugged and destined to be trafficked out of the country.

“I’ll never forget their faces, just sitting there spaced out and confused, unaware of their surroundings,” she says.

Several arrests were made that day and the handful of children handed over to Child Welfare.

“These were one of few successes, I suspect. Human trafficking and child sex slaves are not something the public wants to talk about. It’s also not something that gets a lot of media attention. The police don’t like to talk about it, I think for fear of national panic. But the realities of this dark trade are harsh,” she says.

Since then Reynolds, a former paramedic and substance abuse counsellor, has been very vocal in creating awareness about human trafficking.

“Parents are not aware enough. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, and parents need to become more vigilant.”

While working as a counsellor for a helpline for youth addicts, she stumbled upon information about a human trafficking syndicate that resulted in the above-mentioned sting operation.

“After successful rehabilitation, a young teen confided in me during counselling, telling me about how his former drug merchant paid him to ‘spot’ young children around town. This means he had to identify ‘suitable’ young children and supply information

According to Reynolds, these children and their families are then watched for weeks, before plans are made to abduct the child.

“They watch your house, take note of your daily routine, where your child goes to school, whether he walks home, where his friends live and even where you go shopping.”

Reynolds says it is scary to realise how organised and widespread these syndicates are.

Reynolds says that although there are specialised units in South Africa investigating these syndicates, it is very difficult getting to the kingpins.

“Hunting them down is like hunting down ghosts.”

Western Cape minister of social development, Albert Fritz, says that South Africa continues to be a source, transit and destination country for victims of trafficking.

“Criminal traffickers are increasingly morphing into organised crime syndicates, and use deceptive means to potentially abduct and traffic adults and children,” he states.

Last week marked Human Trafficking Awareness Week and Fritz, along with specialist NGO partners like A21 and Stop Trafficking of People, led a silent protest on Wednesday along St George’s Mall in Cape Town to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking. Nationally, the Social Development Department dealt with 220 cases of human trafficking in 2016.

“As a province, we have also dealt with cases of trafficking, including a case last year of five young boys from KwaZulu-Natal, who had been recruited and deceived into travelling to Cape Town under the impression of having secured places at a top soccer club’s training academy,” he says.

“More recently, in August this year, the department intervened in a case of a 22-yearold woman from Gauteng who was trafficked to Cape Town for the purposes of sexual exploitation.”

Fritz says reliable statistics, especially for children, are difficult to come by, due to the complex underground nature of trafficking.

“However, research reported in the ‘Trafficking in Persons in the SADC Region: Baseline Report: 2016’ shows that poverty and unemployment are viewed as the primary push factors behind the trafficking of persons in South Africa.

He warns the public, especially parents, to be extra vigilant.

In an effort to combat the scourge, the Department of Social Development in the Western Cape is a member of the Western Cape Provincial Trafficking in Persons Task Team. “This sees us working closely with our partners – the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Hawks, the National Prosecuting Authority, the International Organization for Migration, and specialist NGOs which we fund to render services,” he says.

The department has allocated just over R27.7m for shelter services under the Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP).

The VEP provides safe accommodation for adult victims of human trafficking and their children through a growing network of 16 shelters across the province. *Identity and place names withheld for the sake of confidentiality.

Improved access to antenatal care T

he Basic Antenatal Care initiative is crucial to reducing both mother and infant mortality. Previously it was available only at some City clinics, but this is about to change.

The City of Cape Town’s Health Department launched its expanded Basic Antenatal Care (BANC) roll-out to about 80 of its 100 clinics across the metropole, barring satellite and mobile clinics.

Until now, the service has only been available at provincial health facilities and a limited number of City clinics.

According to the new South African National Antenatal Policy released earlier this year, a pregnant woman should have a minimum of four and up to seven antenatal visits during

pregnancy to guarantee that all is well with her health and that of the growing baby.

Essential supplements have to be provided to the expectant mother during pregnancy. Blood tests are done to ensure that any conditions which might affect the baby are diagnosed and treated early on.

All pregnant women are offered an HIV test at their first visit. If the result is positive, they have to be started on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment immediately to ensure the baby is protected. If the booking clinic does not provide ARVs, the client is referred to the nearest ARV site.

However, City Health is also in the process of expanding ARV access to all clinics.

So it is crucial that women give their children the best possible start by signing up for antenatal care as soon as their pregnancy is confirmed,” Smith says.

In the quarter between April and June, City clinics made more than 3500 new BANC bookings. Smith says that with the service being extended to more clinics, it is anticipated that this number will increase.

avin Shaskolsky, a Century City Athletic Club runner, is set to brave the gruelling Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon for the second consecutive year, this time to raise funds for Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo Park.

Gavin is undertaking the endurance event from Thursday 26 October to Sunday 5 November, to raise awareness and support for Sinenjongo where more than 30 of the club’s development runners attend school, says Maggie Rowley, spokesperson for the Rabie Property Group – the developers of Century City.

“The school, which has an enrolment of over 1000 learners and serves an extremely impoverished community, was adopted by the Rabie Property Group eight years ago.

Since then it has transformed from one of the Western Cape’s high-risk schools with a matric pass rate of just 27% into one of the better performers with a pass rate of between 87 and 97% for the past five years,” Maggie says.

The Century City Athletic Club also adopted the school as its outreach project some years back, nurturing some great talent and providing a healthy outlet for these young people.

Maggie says the school, which was previously housed in containers, was moved to brand new bricks-and-mortar premises in January this year, but is still in dire need of many amenities and equipment that can help it realise its dream of becoming one of South Africa’s top schools. “And it is to this end that Gavin will be running, pursuing a passion he shares with Sinenjongo, namely leadership, conscious transformation, paying it forward, and education for young South Africans,” Maggie says.

The marathon is a self-sufficiency run of 250km held over six legs in seven days with set distances for each day, ranging from 28km to 80km. Participants must carry all their supplies, clothing and compulsory safety and/or survival equipment for the duration of the event. Overnight shelter in camps, as well as water – which is strictly controlled and distributed during the race – is supplied. . Members of the public wishing to support Gavin and Sinenjongo can do so by committing one hour or a set amount of money for every kilometre that Gavin completes in this year’s marathon.

Is positiwiteit en jou denke regtig genoeg om te ontvlug uit die realiteit?

Sodra jy voel asof jy besig is om nuwe hoogtes te bereik, is dit asof vrees die laaste sê het en skielik voel jy asof jy niks verdien nie.

Skielik bevraagteken jy jou bestaan, jou keuses en die Hoër Hand se plan vir jou lewe. Is sekere mense maar net gemaak om dinge erger te ervaar as ander, of is dit regtig ’n saak van persepsie?

Dit voel alewig asof diegene wat bo is, maar net bo sal bly terwyl die ‘‘ander’’ maar net tevrede moet wees met dit wat die wêreld vir hul oor het.

Ek sit alewig met hierdie vrae en in die middel van my worsteling besef ek, ek sal liewer swaar aan dinge wil kom, as wat ek die stroom gaan volg.

Don’t resign, keep the faith I want to say to Distressed (“Bullying in the workplace”, 04/10): Do not give them the satisfaction of resigning. You need your job and income.

They are a bunch of hooligans and lead miserable lives outside their place of work.

That is why they are preying on a soft target. Your boss is not worthy of the name. If he had put a stop to this from the beginning, it would not have escalated so. This borders on victimisation and harassment. They have no right to go through your personal stuff. Don’t you have a HR department or head office to which you can report them, the boss included? I think you must also go to the labour department to find out what you can do in such an instance. I also want to advise you to pray and to believe in that which you ask God. Pray silently at your desk and ask God for what you want to happen.

When you enter your workplace in the mornings, start by saying a mantra in your head about how you want your day to be and repeat this several times. The most important thing is that you must believe what you ask.

Remember to take your burdens to the Lord. I believe in karma – what goes around comes around. Please do not commit suicide.

Things may seem dark now, but it will get better. Put your faith to the test.

Hoe meer belasting jy betaal, hoe minder sal die stadsbestuur vir jou gee.

Hierdie oënskynlike benadering moet geen kans tot ontkieming gegee word nie.

Ek wil graag alle inwoners aanmoedig om by munisipale aangeleenthede betrokke te raak en die voorgeskrewe strukture ten volle te benut.

Waar dit nie ten volle funksioneer nie, moet in samewerking met die raadslid verseker word dat afwykings reggestel of ingestel word.

Daar moet nie tyd gemors word met allerlei groeperings wat nie behoorlik gestruktureer is nie en die gemeenskap net verwar en verdeel.

Daar is genoeg geld in die begroting en met behoorlike beplanning kan elke gebied sy regmatige deel kry. Ons betaal belasting en wonder soms waarom.

Die Stad Kaapstad moet ’n slag kyk hoe dit in die hele area lyk. Wat is nou weer die verskoning met die sny van die onkruid op die middelmannetjies en sypaadjies?

Weer moeilikheid met die tenders; dit raak nou afgesaag.

Selfs die sperstrepe op die paaie hou nie meer lank nie.

Om die armes te help is nodig, maar om die middelklas nog verder te straf is ’n ander saak.

Ander maniere moet gesoek word om daar te help. Daar word derduisende rande vermors op onbenullighede.

Ek hoop dat hierdie ding in die kiem gesmoor gaan word anders gaan die huidige DAbeheerde munisipaliteit probleme kry.

Waar is nou geld vir spoedhobbels?

Die behoeftes van mense verskil van woongebied tot woongebied (“Toelaes na

armes”, 27/9). ’n Goeie voorbeeld is die swembad wat die Stad in Bloekombos wou bou, maar wat die inwoners nie wou hê nie – hulle het ander prioriteite. Die doel van die wykstoelaes, volgens my, was juis sodat die raadslid tog sekere prioriteite in sy of haar wyk kon aanspreek.

Die volgende is ’n aanhaling van die burgemeester in November 2013: “The City is focused on assisting its most vulnerable citizens, and spends 64% of its service delivery budget on the provision of services to the poor”. Ek dink ’n jaar of twee later was dit 67%. Die vraag is, waar kom die begroting vandaan. En die antwoord, dit word deur die belastingbetaler gefinansier. Dink u regtig dit is regverdig dat die bietjie wat die belastingbetaler eintlik “terug kry”, nou ook weggeneem word?

Alhoewel die toelaes baie keer bestee word aan items wat die Stad eintlik behoort te voorsien, bv. spoedhobbels, waar gaan die geld daarvoor nou vandaan kom? My boodskap aan me. De Lille is eenvoudig: “Hou hierdie spasie dop vir die volgende verkiesingsuitslae”!

Another victim of disappearing units I saw an article in Tygerburger that explained a rather strange phenomenon in my home (“Missing units are a mystery”, 04/10). I also recently lost about 1000 units.

It is impossible that I could have used so many units. I live alone in a small house on a property and I hardly use electricity. This is a huge loss to me, as I have been stocking up on units and bought a lot before the price increase.

New voices to be heard at Artscape

T

he three productions (Imbewu, Night and Day, and Once Upon a Nation), selected from scripts, concepts and synopses submitted by individual artists, theatre makers, directors and storytellers from across the country, will come to life when Artscape Theatre Centre showcases this year’s New Voices programme from Tuesday 3 October to Saturday 28 October at the Artscape Arena.

New Voices is guided by the spirit of rectifying societal ills by means of promoting inclusiveness in the arts and seeking to give a voice to new theatre makers, directors, choreographers, scriptwriters and those seeking creative expression.

Imbewu, written by Sinethemba Twani and directed by the legendary Fatima Dike, is the “New Voice” to hit the stage from 3 to 7 October.

The second production, Night and Day, is the story of Vincent, a once-honest man who had never wronged anyone, but now finds himself in prison through a series of unexpected circumstances. One morning he awakes and decides that he wants to write a book. In this process he gives us insight into his dark past that led to his imprisonment. The show, written by Khayalethu Anthony and directed by Khayalethu Mofu, will be staged from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 October.

Wrapping up this year’s New Voices programme will be Once Upon a Nation, written by Lindsay Abrahams and directed by Lee-Ann van Rooi. Characters in this fairytale-esque production find themselves living worlds apart.

A sneak peek into their lives highlights the various realities that we as common people deal with within our different cultural climates. As our everyday realities are paralleled with those of fictional characters, it leaves us questioning the line between reality and fantasy. The play uses skit comedy, parody and storytelling devices to portray the various ways in which our nation, once destined for greatness, has ‘lost the plot’ more than 20 years into our democracy.

The show runs from Tuesday 24 to Saturday 28 October.

Heart of Hope tackles CHD JAY­DEE CYSTER

ive years ago Monique Kemp started the support and awareness group, Heart of Hope.

The group, established as a means of providing support to families faced with congenital heart defects/disease (CHD), was started after Kemp’s now seven-year-old son, Daniel, was born with three types of CHD, namely interrupted aortic arch, atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect.

Daniel was also born with a congenital defect of the colon, known as Hirschsprung’s disease.

Congenital heart disease, one of the most common types of birth defects in the world, is when a child is born with a heart which is abnormally structured in that it may have incomplete or missing parts, may be put together in the wrong way, have holes in between the chamber partitions, or may have leaky or narrow valves or narrow vessels.

“Our organisation is set on creating awareness in respect of CHD. We want to break the silence surrounding the disease by breaking down barriers and asking for individuals to pay attention and realise that CHD is in fact a global health issue,” explains Kemp.

“There are a few misconceptions around CHD, with a familiar one being that it is referred to as a hole in the heart. It is actually not just a hole in the heart, but a broken heart, as the heart is the first thing that develops when you are pregnant. The heart develops abnormally, hence being broken.

There are about 45 different types of broken heart abnormalities,” she explains.

Earlier in the year Kemp jetted off to Spain to represent South Africa at the seventh World Congress for Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery in Barcelona. Heart of Hope was one of two CHD advo-

cacy and awareness support organis organisations to represent South Africa at the congress.

Kemp participated in the International Congenital Heart Leadership Summit where she was able to interact with and meet CHD patients and family leaders and participate with 37 other leaders from around the world in what she calls “an intense, however fulfilling and life-changing week”.

“We left Barcelona with built collaborations, new relationships and increased knowledge on promoting better outcomes for congenital and rheumatic heart patients.

I was stunned by the fact that South Africa’s CHD data base is ‘non-existent’ and that awareness days for CHD are not recognised in South Africa,” says Kemp. She further explains that 1.2 million children are born with CHD annually and that 300 000 of these children pass away because of it every year.

“South Africa does not form part of this total and this is something that needs to be amended,” she says.

Kemp was afforded an opportunity to address her fellow CHD leaders, as well as the doctors in attendance at the conference. “My address was based on my personal experience with Daniel and how I would’ve done a few things differently. I would’ve acted dif-

Learn stealth like a ninja The Kids Gym in Milnerton recently launched a brand new programme for youngsters – one where they can learn how to move as swiftly, quietly and accurately as a ninja.

The gym’s Ninja Zone – a youth ninja skills programme – was launched with much fanfare on Tuesday last week.

The gym, which opened on 1 August at Sable Square, is the first and only establishment in South Africa and Africa to offer this innovative and exciting new sports programme for children.

Ninja Zone, the kids’ version of Ninja Warrior, was developed by Casey Wright, a veteran in the United States’ gymnastics industry. He describes Ninja Zone as a sport that combines the discipline of martial arts, the coordination of gymnastics, the strength and agility of obstacle course training, and the creativity of street dance.

Beyond physical skills, Ninja Zone also teaches self-confidence, discipline, impulse control, responsibility and instinctual safety.

t’s not often you get asked by the police to do their work for them.

Even less so going on a manhunt across continents for your grandfather’s stolen World War II medals.

And having dozens of strangers helping you with information after seeing a Facebook plea and newspaper letter asking for help.

What’s probably even less likely is getting the medals back.

It all started when I opened a little box in which I kept my invaluable family items, like old photos and letters.

My grandfather, Edward Bottomley, was a British soldier who served in WWII (he was stationed at the liberation of BergenBelsen, which is a story for another day). He later worked in Rhodesia and was awarded some more medals.

My grandparents weren’t people who kept things. In this box is literally all I have from that side of my family. And as my father, their only son, passed away a few years ago it is also a big connection to him.

I used to keep the medals in the box and had it stored with my mother in Stellenbosch, where I thought it would be safe. In

I was stuck and frustrated. Just explaining the story takes forever. I contacted as many medal dealers in Cape Town as I could find, but all told me to contact BidorBuy. As a last resort, I decided to post my story on social media and ask for help in finding the seller. The story spread and was shared by many. As a result, People’s Post newspaper published it as a letter and I spoke on Cape Talk.

Within hours somebody sent me the number and address (it helps to have friends who have connections). As days went by many people called with the man’s details, especially those in the medal industry.

The seller sounded genuinely shocked. He buys his medals from a supplier, he says.

And that person must have bought my medals from someone who had stolen them.

Within a few days he paid back the refund and my medals were posted to my sister-inlaw in the UK where a family member will pick them up in a few weeks.

The seller still hasn’t supplied the details of the trail to the person who stole the medals and I’m quite certain he didn’t know they were stolen, but that’s a matter the police can deal with. I have my medals back.

It is that time of year again!!!

ith the 2017 Killarney Motor Show on Sunday now just a few days away, the organisers are busy with the finishing touches to an event that promises to raise the family entertainment level to a new high.

The main attractions will include a host of live action led by new stunt star Alphonso Loots in his seven-litre Fordbased Titan Monster Truck with its giant, chest- high wheels, who will crush as many stationary cars as he can find.

Then there are the Le Riche brothers who thrilled the crowd at last year’s show. Recently returned from the United States, their motorcycle stunt presentation has new variations.

The action also includes those wayout guys from AfrikaBurn who are forsaking their base in the Karoo to show off a selection of their wacky, homebuilt vehicles.

On a more serious note, there will be more than 1000 static wheeled exhibits.

These include new, vintage and veteran cars and commercial vehicles of all kinds.

Providing a booking is made, many of the latest production models will also be available for test runs on a section of the main track.

There will be Picture Cars displays of vehicles they supply for movies and television, as well as a selection of powerful American police cars.

By contrast, the Crankhandle Club will not be aiming to set any new lap records when they stage a display of slow-speed action during their parade of magnificently restored classic and veteran cars around the track.

around the enclosure. And Paintball is, of course, a make-believe war game familiar to the majority of youngsters.

Wheels and balls apart, there will also be a spectacular model aeroplane stunt show and flypast, a big airbag jump, an inflatable parachute rocket and even a snake show.

Then for those who may want to relax for a while, there are seven food courts, eight live bands (at various times during the

day), beer gardens and wine tasting.

Catering for the growing popularity of electrical motivation, displays will feature electric scooters and electrically assisted pedal cycles, as well as racing with electrically powered model cars, on a mini oval track.

The show is being set up on Saturday and will then be open for business from 10:00 to 17:00 on Sunday.

T

here are still limited tickets available for the Muizenberg Jazz Festival taking place this weekend.

The festival, taking place at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg on Friday and Saturday (13 & 14 October), will feature 10 jazz acts, each performing an hour-long set over two evenings.

Also featured at the event is a jazz photography exhibition by local photographer Gregory Franz.

Mostly self-taught, Franz’s passion for photography started out as a hobby to capture his own images of musicians.

Franz has been one of the official photographers for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival for the past three years and his images have been featured in magazines, newspapers, and brochures, and on album sleeves and websites.

Franz says: “I have built up friendships with many local and visiting international musicians, and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to photograph them. I like to capture the nuances of the live music situation in the moment to get my images right, rather than spending hours manipulating them later. The intent behind my photography is to promote the culture of music – particularly local music – to the rest of the world.”

His exhibition will be open to all festivalgoers in the foyer of the Masque Theatre on both days.

On Saturday 14 October there will also be workshops organised by the South African Association for Jazz

Jazz artist McCoy Mrubata as captured by photographer Gregory Franz. Mrubata will be performing at the Muizenberg Jazz Festival this weekend. Photos by Franz will also be exhibited in the foyer of the Masque Theatre for the duration of the festival.

Art appreciation in fab Franschhoek Embark on a journey of art discovery with Art Franschhoek from Friday 27 October to Monday 27 November.

Art Franschhoek was launched by the Franschhoek Wine Valley last year in an effort to afford visitors the opportunity to appreciate the fine art collection exhibits during October and November.

This year Art Franschhoek will once again “open its doors” to the public, who will be able to enjoy an abundance of art as Franschhoek’s many galleries and resident artists showcase their finest works.

To celebrate the start of this festival of art appreciation, some of the participating galleries will be hosting special events during the weekend of 27 to 29 October, including a series of curated artist walkabouts.

Throughout the monthlong Art Franschhoek, the world renowned Everard Read Gallery will be exhibiting major works by some of South Africa’s finest contemporary artists.

Ebony/Curated, with its exquisite displays of fine art, sculptures and ceramics,

will host four solo exhibitions in their two galleries, including a major retrospective landscape exhibition of the late South African master, Erik Laubscher.

The La Motte Museum will also be exhibiting 104 artworks, as well as the personal memorabilia, of Jacob Hendrik Pierneef. Be mesmerised by the beautiful ceramics created by internationally renowned ceramicist David Walters and his daughter, Sarah.

The Holden Manz Gallery, conveniently situated in the centre of the village, will be exhibiting the works of Donna McKellar, and visitors can indulge in a relaxing yet informative garden and art tour at the breathtaking Leeu Estates, where they’ll be afforded the opportunity to connect with art and nature in serene and meditative spaces with exceptional views. Beautiful works of art will also be on display at IS Art Gallery, including ceramics, sculptures, jewellery and paintings in different mediums.

Comedy club open during Silly Season The Cape Town Comedy Club will be open seven days a week from Monday 18 December to Sunday 7 January and then as usual from Wednesdays to Sundays thereafter.

ie Westelike Provinsie se o.15-span is die kampioen nadat hy die Boland op Donderdag 5 Oktober in die eindstryd van die Carfind.co.za Iqhawe-week in die Bill Jardine-stadion in Johannesburg met 7-5 geklop het.

Dit is die vyfde keer dat die toernooi aangebied word en al 14 rugbyunies van die Suid-Afrikaanse Rugbybunie (Saru) het spanne na die week gestuur. Dié toernooi is net vir spelers in die provinsies wat nie tradisionele rugbyskole is nie, van die platteland is of van voormalige model C-skole, waar daar nie ’n formele rugbyliga is nie.

Die toernooi word gesamentlik deur Saru en die Suid-Afrikaanse Legends-unie aangebied. Die week is in 2013 begin.

Volgens Stefan Terblanche, uitvoerende beampte van die Legends, is baie nuwe talent verlede jaar ontdek en het die spelers groot opslae in kompetisies in hul provinsies gemaak.

“Die toernooi is gehou van 2 tot 5 Oktober en dit was spesiaal, want ons herdenk ook vanjaar die Wêreldbeker wat die Springbok-

ke in 2007 verower het. Ons vier ook vanjaar die 25ste herdenking van eenwording in SA rugby,” het Terblanche gesê.

Hy glo dat die waardes van sportmanskap, integriteit en toewyding die lewens van die jeug kan verander.

“Ons as die Legends is trots daarop om deel te wees van transformasie van die sport en sal voortgaan om bydraes te lewer om die sport op alle vlakke te ontwikkel,” het Terblanche gesê.

Hy het ook gesê dat die week gewys het dat dit wel die plek is waar onontginde diamante ontdek word en deur hul provinsies ontwikkel word.

Die wedstryd tussen die WP en die Boland was ’n naelbytstryd, maar ook opwindend.

Halftyd het die WP met 7-0 voorgeloop en die Boland kon eers halfpad deur die tweede helfte sy drie druk. Dit is egter nie verdoel nie. Albei spanne wou met strafskoppe die telbord laat aanrol, maar die stelskoppers was onsuksesvol. Die Boland het uit alle hoeke aangeval om die agterstand uit te wis, maar die WP se verdediging het gehou.

Danksy die voorsprong van twee punte, is die WP as kampioen gekroon.

WP se spelers vier hul oorwinning in die eindstryd van die Carfind.co.za Iqhawe­week in die Bill Jardine­stadion in Johannesburg. WP het Boland met 7­5 geklop.

Tygerbergers Paul Jacobs (Panorama) and Noeleen Vermaak (De Bron) will take on the Namib Desert on their mountain bikes when they compete in the Nedbank Desert Dash in December.

They take up the challenge of the world’s longest single-stage MTB race on behalf of Abundant Life Palliative Care (www.abundantlifevic.org).

Abundant Life delivers essential care to terminally ill patients, largely funded by donations and reliant on volunteers.

With World Palliative Care Day on 14 October, with the underlying theme being “Don’t leave those suffering behind”, Abundant Life, headed by Dr Clint Cupido, plays a major role in creating awareness and cam-

paigning for industry recognition.

Paul, an ambassador for Abundant Life, will be joined by his partner Noeleen, taking on the 369km race as solo participants. Noeleen is one of only 12 female participants entered into the event.

Tygerburger readers are encouraged to support this worthy cause by attending Abundant Life’s fundraising event, Nineties versus Noughties (the musical) at the Barnyard Theatre, Willowbridge, on 27 October.

Parklands FA hosts Development League The Parklands Football Academy (PFA) recently played host to the Development League – a league involving nine different clubs.

Nick Meyer, PFA founder and chairperson, says the teams currently involved are Ballers Soccer School, Soccer Warriors, Parklands Football Academy, Fives Futbol, RB6, Supersport Soccer Schools, Mini Soccer, BESA, and Hout Bay Football Academy.

“It is a league for likeminded coaches whose main focus is on develop-

ment, and not winning at all costs.

“It also creates an event where clubs can build on team spirit by watching all their age groups play after each other against the same team they just played,” says Liam Shirley, who started the league a year ago.

The event was held at the Parklands Sports Complex in Dorchester Drive, Parklands, on Sunday 24 September.

Local community radio station, One FM 94.0, kept the crowd entertained with music. “The kids had a great day out,” says Meyer.

Festival of fitness: Jonathan Hartzen­ berg from Edgemead excelled in the duathlon event (run/cycle/run) at the 31st Freshpak Fitness Festival on Saturday 30 September in Clanwilliam. The Freshpak Fitness Festival is one of the Western Cape’s most longstanding and popular multi­sport events. Jonathan won the duathlon men’s event in a time of 01:09:06. The various events at the festival included a 1.5km or 3km swim, duathlon (5km run/20km cycle/2.5km run), biathlon (5km run/20km cycle) and triathlon (800m swim/20km cycle/5km run), with participants competing either individually or as part of a team.

Fisherman’s Friend run a fun day out The much-anticipated Fisherman’s Friend Strongman Run, which is hailed as the biggest fun mass-start obstacle race in the world, will take place on Saturday in Paarl.

The 8km, 15km and 21km races will suit the beginner to the advanced athlete.

Every obstacle is built in mass style, allowing enough space for the runners to complete obstacles without waiting in queues.

Ferdinand Rabie (Brackenfell) and his team need to adhere to world-class standards in order to host the event, and athletes and spectators alike can be assured of a topnotch event.

Athletes who have already entered can collect their race pack tomorrow (Thursday) at the Tygervalley Sportmans Warehouse from 12:00 to 18:00.

Late entries will still be available until Friday.

it is elke ouer se droom om, wanneer geleenthede opduik, alles in hul vermoë te doen om hul kind die geleentheid te gee om die kans met albei hande aan te gryp.

Maar wat nou gemaak as jy ’n spertyd van minder as twee maande het om altesame R40 000 in te samel vir jou kind se deelname aan die gesogte skole-sewestoernooi, waaraan 20 skolespanne van oor die wêreld heen in Doebai gaan deelneem.

Dís die dilemma van Pierre Bosman, pa van Eugene Bosman, gr.11-leerder van die Hoërskool Stellenberg, wat vir dié uitgesoekte groep van 25 gekies is.

“Stellenberg was een van ’n klomp skole wat aan die Marius Schoeman o.17-sewestoernooi by die Hoërskool Paarl Gimnasium deelgeneem het. Na afloop van die toernooi is 25 spelers gekies, wat as die Cape Rebels-span in Doebai gaan deelneem. Hy was baie opgewonde omdat hy die groep gehaal het, maar net 12 spelers sal in die span opgeneem word,” het Pierre gesê.

Vandat Eugene in die groep is, het hy en sy ouers verskeie geldinsamelingsveldtogte gehou om sy droom om in Doebai te gaan speel, te probeer verwesenlik.

“Ek dink hy was meer opgewonde oor die feit dat die toernooi saamval met die eerste been van die HSBC-sewestoernooi in Doebai en hy kan skouers skuur met die Blitsbokke,” het Pierre laggend gesê.

Ander skole wat aan die toernooi by Paarl-Gim deelgeneem het, was die Hoërlandbouskool Boland, Paul Roos Gimnasium, Durbanville, Brackenfell, die gasheerskool en die Hoër Jongenskool.

Eugene speel senter in die 15-man-kode en skrumskakel of senter in die sewes.

Volgens Pierre is Eugene se sterk punte sy werkverrigting op verdediging. Eugene glo weer dis sy vermoë om die bal te versprei.

“Behalwe om in die toernooi in Doebai te speel, sien ek veral daarna uit om die besienswaardighede waarvan ek gehoor het, te besoek. Vanjaar het ek gewissel tussen die o.19A- en o.19B-span by Stellies en het ek ook die sewesspan verteenwoordig,” het Eugene gesê.

Sy sewes-helde is Werner Kok van die Blitsbokke en Jerry Tuwai van Fidji en hy droom ook daarvan om eendag vir die Blitsbokke uit te draf.

“Ons speel ook die Vrydag en die Saterdag (1 en 2 Desember) soos die Blitsbokke en hopelik is ons wedstryde so geskeduleer dat ons die Blitsbokke in aksie kan sien.

“Om skouers te skuur met die ander skolespelers is ook iets waarna ek uitsien, want ons almal bly in een hotel,” het Eugene gesê.

Volgens Pierre het Eugene ’n stalletjie beman by Stellenberg se braaivleisfees, wat verlede maand gehou is en het hy heelwat geld ingesamel.

“Pryse is ook uitgeloot en ons beplan nóg geldinsamelingsveldtogte. Hy is egter grootliks afhanklik van mense wat hom geldelik gaan steun via skenkings en borgskappe.

Hy het skenkings van Erik van Zyl, Hennie Loots, Cassie Carstens, Ronel Beukes, Steve Immelman en Henties-vrugtesap ontvang, maar sy finale betaling moet middelOktober inbetaal wees,” het Pierre gesê.

Eugene hou van gholf, tennis en raakrugby en gaan ná matriek teologie aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch studeer.

Back on track: Matthew Ferguson is making his debut in national colours at the World Masters Track Cycling Championships currently underway in Los Angeles. The championships started on Sunday and will end on Sunday 15 October. Ferguson took a break of more than 20 years from the sport, but has made rapid progress since returning to track cycling three years ago with the TrackCyclingSA Club.
