The annual Milly’s Awards were held recently at the Milnerton Playhouse where several hardworking artists each received an award for productions staged at the theatre last year. The theme for this year’s awards ceremony was “Hearts and Dia­ monds”. The ceremony took place on Saturday 3 February. Full story on page 3.

Table View motorist had a narrow escape recently when an attacker attempted to hijack his vehicle while he was parked near an intersection.

The attack occurred this past Sunday, 4 February, shortly after 22:00, police say.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, the motorist was at the corner of West Coast Road (R27) and Porterfield Road when he came under attack.

“An unknown man knocked on the passenger side window and the driver asked him what was wrong. The man walked to the driver’s side of the vehicle, took out a knife and attempted to stab the owner of the vehicle through the open window,” Chandler explains.

She says the victim then opened his door and pushed it against the suspect.

“The suspect continued stabbing towards the victim, who eventually managed to exit the vehicle.”

Police say a struggle ensued and that the

suspect jumped into the vehicle.

An off-duty fire and rescue official, his cousin who’s also a firefighter and their friend, who were across the road, came to the motorist’s aid.

“They saw the altercation and ran towards the scene to assist.”

Chandler says the firemen managed to get hold of the suspect and confiscated the knife.

Firefighter Cecil Brussel, who is based at the Hermanus Fire and Rescue Station, says him and his friends were opposite the road in their civilian vehicle when they saw the

commotion.

“We were on our way to drop off a friend of mine, but as we approached the set of traffic lights we saw an altercation between the driver of a bakkie and another person in the middle of the road. We saw them struggling and we could hear the victim scream for help.

“The suspect jumped out of the vehicle as we approached the vehicle. We asked the driver whether he was okay, and he said yes, he is fine, but that he does not have his keys.

find themselves in such situations should never argue with their assailants and that they should always try to memorise a description of the suspects.

According to the annual crime statistics for 2016/2017 the number of hijackings increased by 14.5% from 14 602 to 16 717 nationally. In the Western Cape this number increased by 8.3% from 2032 to 2201, while in the Table View policing area it increased by 60% from five cases reported to eight cases reported.

he annual Milly’s Awards were held at the Milnerton Playhouse recently where actors, directors, costume designers and other crew got honoured for their hard work.

The awards ceremony was held on Saturday 3 February.

Beryl Eichenberger, spokesperson, says this year’s theme was “Hearts and Diamonds”.

“With music by S.W.A.G. the evening got off to a swinging start and the party continued long after the official ceremony,” says Eichenberger.

She says that for debut director Anton Schäfer, the night was an evening that sealed his talent with Art scooping best director and best production, as well as four other awards.

This was closely followed by veteran director Sheila McCormick’s production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. “This was a hotly contested evening, once more showing the quality of the Milnerton Players productions,” says Eichenberger.

The Milly’s, as they are commonly known, are adjudicated by an independent panel of judges, all of whom have a long history of theatre experience.

The award winners were Sheila McCormick (best costumes), Tersia Harley (best

artistic contribution), Fin McCormick and Barry Altwig (technical excellence), Beryl Eichenberger (best supporting actress), Werner Steffen (best supporting actor), Fiona Tanner (best actress) and Martin Kluge and Christian Marias (best actor).

The Len Nijkamp best director award went to Anton while the Harry Haslam best production award went to his production, Art. “The Milnerton Players committee also honours members who have given outstanding service, and Willy Sass, Neal Johnson, Laura Singh, Jane Amory and Michele Bailie were worthy recipients,” she says.

Sheila McCormick scooped the social evening award and James King the coarse acting award.

Suspect arrested for attempted murder Table View police arrested a man on charges of attempted murder after the suspect nearly murdered another man.

Captain Adriana Chandler, police spokesperson, says the victim was with friends at the Killarney taxi rank when he got involved in an argument with a man. The suspect apparently intervened in the argument and stabbed the victim with a broken bottle several times.

The incident occurred on Monday 29 January.

“Bystanders managed to stop the fight and called an ambulance and the police. The suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder,” Chandler says.

The suspect appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 31 January and was remanded in custody until tomorrow (8 February) when he will next appear. He will reportedly apply for bail.

Ten schools get science kits NOMZAMO YUKU

Cape Town Science Centre (CTSC) in Observatory donated 10 science kits to local schools on Saturday 27 January.

The centre’s director, Julie Cleverdon, says this is aimed at empowering disadvantaged schools in the surroundings of the Chevron Oil Refinery. During the handover ceremony, science teachers also received training to enable them to effectively use the kits. The kits are reportedly designed for the new Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement.

Cleverdon says: “Empowering schools with resources and training to deliver effective science teaching is undoubtedly a necessity. Organisations that empower the schools in their communities should be commended and encouraged. We are extremely proud to be able to implement this initiative on behalf of Chevron Africa, one such organisation.”

Each school received a box filled with four different kits, including a light kit, electricity kit, force kit and microscope kit.

From track events to long-jump, high-jump and shot-put, participants gave their all and had the backing of their cheering counterparts. Arrest for attempted rape

28-year-old man will be appearing in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of attempted rape, the police say.

Table View police spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, says the suspect was arrested this past weekend after he allegedly tried to attack a young woman.

Chandler says the victim was visiting a local pub on Saturday 3 February when she asked her sister’s boyfriend, who was also at the pub, for a lift home.

“The man drove the victim to his place in Dartford Road, Parklands, and told the victim to go to sleep as she was too intoxicated.

“Later that morning, she felt someone on top of her and she saw her sister’s boyfriend, trying to rape her. She managed

to push him off and he left the room,” Chandler says.

A short while later, however, an unknown man who was also in the house raped her. The suspect ran away.

The victim managed to call a taxi and left the house.

Police say she reported the rape to the police later the same day.

Chandler says the suspect who tried to rape her first was arrested the following morning and charged with attempted rape.

The Milnerton cluster’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is investigating the case.

“The other unknown suspect who raped the victim is being sought by police,” Chandler says.

Armed robbers arrested Four men were put behind bars for an attempted armed robbery that occurred this past weekend.

The incident occurred on Saturday 3 February at 17:35.

Captain Adriana Chandler, Table View police spokesperson, says the victim was walking down Arum Road in Table View when he was approached by four unknown men.

“The men surrounded him and one pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the victim.

“They demanded he hand over all his possessions, but he refused and walked on. The

suspects then started to shout profanities at the victim and walked away. Shortly afterwards, the victim managed to call the police and told them what had happened,” Chandler says.

A short while later Table View police arrived at the scene and the victim pointed out the four suspects. “They were arrested and a toy gun used in the commission of the crime was found in the possession of one of the suspects.” The four, aged between 17 and 23 years, were taken to the police station.

They will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court soon.

20 arrested for possession of drugs A total of 20 suspects have been arrested for being in possession of illegal substances, Table View police have confirmed.

Police spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, says the arrests were made between Friday 26 January and Thursday 1 February.

She says police managed to find various illegal substances in the suspects’ posses-

sion. The substances included dagga, tik and cocaine.

“The arrests were executed at various spots within the Table View precinct during random stop-and-searches.

“One of the suspects was a learner who was brought to the police station by a teacher, who found the dagga in his possession,” Chandler says.

Two locals to represent WC in angling competition

D

espite the West Coast being a popular fishing spot, two local junior anglers prefer freshwater dams to the ocean.

Anglers and local teenagers, Jason Fraser (17) from Melkbosstrand and Ethan Elinhorn (13) from Table View, have both proven their love for and commitment to bass fishing – a specialised sport fast gaining popularity in South Africa – and are now part of the Western Division Junior Bass Fishing Team. The duo will represent the province at the Junior National Bass Championships taking place in April this year at the Vaal River.

It will be the last year in the team for Jason, who was also nominated as vicecaptain, as he will be joining the senior ranks next year, a spokesperson says.

The Elkanah House learner is currently the most experienced junior angler in the Western Cape, having represented the Western Cape at six national championships, and South Africa – as part of the Junior Protea Team – at three interna-

tional championships.

Fellow local junior angler and Parklands College learner, Ethan, is the most junior member of the team. Although he has been fishing since the age of three years, he only joined divisional bass angling last year. He hopes to be a member of the team for many years to come.

“This year has been challenging to say the least, yet the commitment and dedication of this great group of junior anglers have overcome weather, low water levels and overall tough fishing conditions,” says team manager Jacques Aproskie.

The other team members are Hanro Loots (Stellenbosch), Luke and Liam Pelser (Stanford), Charl Gerber (Stellenbosch), Luc Strydom (Loevenstein), Dean Moller and Michael Blignaut (Hermanus).

The team is currently busy with fundraising and securing sponsorships for a pre-fish event. Anyone willing to assist is welcome to contact the manager, Jacques Aproskie, on 082 770 5399.

The events company Live Music Sundays (LMS), which hosts regular music events at the Edgemead Bowling Club, suffered a huge setback when criminals broke into the club over the weekend.

Clark estimates the value of the stolen equipment, which includes various speakers, amplifiers, cases and stands, to be around R200 000.

There has been a huge response to her Facebook entry and Clark says various bands have offered to do a fundraiser to help them replace the equipment. She says their upcoming events will go ahead as planned and they will have to hire equipment.

‘Birdcage’ won’t be a ‘drag’ Most people will remember the iconic movie The Birdcage, which brought a political scandal into a Miami drag club and created a raucously hilarious comedy about an unorthodox family.

ith Capetonians adjusting to level 6B water restrictions in an effort to stave off Day Zero, the City has released a frequently updated document answering questions surrounding Day Zero.

Here follows an extract from that document with summarised answers. . What would trigger Day Zero?

Day Zero will take effect when dam levels are at 13.5%. . Who will stay connected?

We will prioritise some key areas to stay connected on Day Zero. Densely populated informal settlements will stay connected, as many of them are already using standpipes to collect water. Strategic commercial areas, high-density areas with significant risk of increased burden of disease, and critical services such as hospitals and clinics, where possible, will continue to receive drinking water through the reticulation network. Significant monitoring and enforcement will be put in place to ensure that water usage at these points is significantly reduced. . What key institutions and facilities will remain connected?

Yes, Day Zero moves, as it depends on the dam levels (visit www.capetown.gov.za/ dayzerodashboard). The dam levels depend on water usage, evaporation, how much water the agricultural sector uses, and available water from the additional water supply projects. . Why was pressure reduction only started now and not earlier?

Pressure reduction has been ongoing for approximately 10 years. It was ramped up from March 2017 and throughout 2017.

Pressure reduction is a complex process.

Unfortunately, it is not as straightforward as simply turning off sections of the system, as this could lead to serious damage to the infrastructure. . Will the City engage the private sector, NGOs, community structures, and any other sector players for assistance?

The City has ongoing engagements with external stakeholders on how they can assist with managing this drought and mitigating its effects. The City cannot get Cape Town through the drought on its own. Constructive partnerships are vital. All water users must support us and help to drive awareness to come up with solutions that will help Cape Town through this unprecedented crisis. . Will there be further water restrictions?

Yes. We assess the situation constantly.

Decisions might be communicated at short notice due to the severity of the situation. . How long do you expect this level of water restrictions to be in place?

At least three to five months, depending on how the situation unfolds. . I know that the focus is on Day Zero and avoiding it, but are we at a point where we are considering winter and what that will bring?

Currently, the long-term prediction is not favourable for good rain during the start of winter – in fact it indicates below-normal rainfall. We are planning accordingly with further reduction, conservation efforts and additional water projects.

Locals get creative saving water AVRIL FILLIES

ith Day Zero looming, TygerBurger went in search of innovative ideas on how to save water.

In our search we stumbled upon a group calling themselves Water Shedding Western Cape. It was formed last year and has approximately 130 000 members.

Ashley Marais, chairperson of the Parow North Ratepayers’ Association, belongs to the group and he shared his family’s watersaving plans.

“We are a family of four and sometimes six, and have kept our water usage around the two to three kilolitre average with a bill of between R8 and R16. As you know, families are allocated 50 litres per person per day and if a household uses more than 6000 litres, then the punitive tariffs come into play,” says Marais.

His first tip for the kitchen is for dirty dishes: Squirt warm water mixed with a drop of dishwashing liquid onto your crockery and cutlery, wipe with a sponge and spray with clean water.

“That little bit of water can wash a few more dishes and it works like a charm.

There is no need for paper plates and the bottles I bought cost R24 each at Pick n Pay,” Marais says.

With the body washing kit, the family members use less than a litre to wash and rinse themselves.

“The small sprayer was bought at Pick n Pay, the containers at Plastic Mania and the five-litre sprayer at Brights. They are all advertisers in TygerBurger,” he says.

He refers to the family’s washing machine water recycling system as the “Marais Washbuddi”.

“We have a Speed Queen washing machine and it uses about 220 litres per wash and rinse. After we’ve completed our fourth

or fifth load, I add 1.5 cups of Jik (Wee Jik) to both the wash and rinse drums and mix it with a stick. This water is then poured into five-litre bottles and kept in the toilet and we fill the cistern with it.

“After your number one you spray one or two squirts of the Wee Jik and that neutralises the smell. I use the potpourri housebrand bleach that costs R19 and pour two capfulls into an old Windolene or Vanish spray bottle.”

Marais has also connected the outlet pipe of the washing machine to two drums.

“The one drum is for washing water, the second for rinsing water. There are diverter taps on the pipe leading to the drums. When the wash cycle is complete, we divert the water to the first drum. When the machine rinses, we divert that water to the second drum.

We also connected a pump to both tanks with control taps. When we do our second wash, we fit a hosepipe to the pump and lead it to the washing machine. Open the tap of the tank with the washing water and fill the washing machine. Close the washing water tank tap. When the wash is done, we manually stop the machine, divert that water back into the first tank as before and we then open the tank for the rinse water and run that in the washing machine.

“Repeat for up to four times, depending on how dirty your clothes are and obviously leaving the dirty denims and greasy stuff for very last. We use the washing liquid as it keeps the water fresher for longer,” he says.

“The greywater is then used for our toilets or garden. Our last water bill was R8. As previously stated we are four adults in the house with an apartment for guests, which is occupied most of the time. If our tips can help the residents in the Western Cape, then we’ve contributed to pushing Day Zero back,” Marais says.

What does a cake, a dress and a minister have in common? Well, a wedding of course.

And this wedding was no different – except different in every way.

With an aunt giving away her niece to marry her godmother, it became a bit complicated, but it was all in the name of fun.

A group of women from a yet-to-benamed grocery club hosted a weddingthemed party at the Westridge Gardens on Saturday.

This is a monthly initiative with a variety of themes. Last year, the women hosted monthly parties based on countries, with the native attire and cuisine on offer for the day.

Sunita Clayton, chairperson of the club, says the wedding theme was chosen

by one of the women.

“The women in the club range from their late 20s to early 70s. Every month we have themed parties and it was one of the suggestions that we do a wedding. We chose Westridge Gardens with Streetwise Twos [as our wedding lunch] and it is all in the name of fun,” she says.

Each woman was assigned a character to play.

The club is made up of friends and family from Mitchell’s Plain, Primrose Park, Athlone, Zeekoevlei, Goodwood and Monte Vista. Founder Chantal Titus says the club has been around for many years and it is a breakaway for the moms.

“As moms we are very busy and this is a social gathering and opportunity for us to have ‘me time’,” she says.

The group was created in the name of saving, and the women share savings tips and buy and sell meat and cooldrink stamps, as well as vouchers.

Love is in the air! Well­known Cape Town music artist, Alvon “The Entertainer” Collison,

and his team of performers will be hosting their annual Valentine’s show on Sunday 11 February at the Dutch Reformed Church hall on the corner of Park Road and Beaufort Street in Milnerton. With him on stage will be Shannon Lewis, Faried Swartz, Janine Pick and Renee Osborne. Collison is far right. The show starts at 15:00. Voëls raak nou ernstige krisis Met die knellende droogte is die dam wat ons hier het, vinnig besig om droog te loop.

Daar is egter ’n groot probleem, en dit is die instroming van alle soorte voëls – duidelik op soek na water. Groot was ons verbasing toe ons vanoggend by die Sonstraaldam, hoewel die watervlak daar 100% beter lyk as by ons dammetjie, ’n oorbevolking van voëls aantref.

My vraag is net, en dit mag wreed klink, is daar geen manier waarop hierdie voëls beheer kan word nie?

Indien elke paar nog 8 tot 10 kuikens moet kry, weet ek wragtie nie! Dalk kan ’n voëlkenner hierop reageer.

Some sympathy for City Council While I share the general anger at how the water crisis situation has been allowed to develop, I do have some sympathy for the City Council.

I’m looking at a circular, “Water Saving Tips”, which they sent to a family in mid-2016, which was tailored to their usage, and informed them: “You can gain R545 per year on water by not consuming in Tariff Block 3!”

Supposing that, at that time, the City had been more aggressive and had instead greatly raised the water tariffs, or used money intended for other important projects, spending it instead on desalination, boreholes, etc, this would likely have been met with even greater opposition than the recent “massive outcry from

residents” which resulted in the dropping of the proposed drought levy. And if we’d then had good rainfall, or the residents had greatly reduced their usage, or the national government had provided funding, so that it turned out that the City had adequate supplies, and those crisis measures had proved unnecessary, I’m sure there would now have been an even bigger public outcry.

People are now complaining with the benefit of hindsight.

The City had a balancing act – they couldn’t see into the future; they had to make educated guesses. And unfortunately they got it wrong.

The population has grown rapidly, and I suspect many of those extra people don’t have to pay for water, compounding the problem.

While some people will flout the restrictions as they can afford high fines and punitive tariffs, we could adopt a more positive attitude towards that: it will be extra money for the City, which can help pay for the additional measures. An increase in water quotas to accommodate visitors could be similarly justified: they will likely spend a lot of money while in the City.

Imbalances remain in service delivery It is really amazing to see that even now that we are in the democratic era, the services rendered [in the townships] are still unequal to the services rendered to those who were previously advantaged. To name a few imbalances, you will never see Metro Police and Law Enforcement in the so-called locations and that is where they are also needed to enforce the law and bylaws.

In these areas you will find people littering, wastage of water by the numerous so-called car washes, and the noise, especially at night, is unbearable from the illegal shebeens that terrorise residents all night and also attract thugs. All this happens in Kraaifontein, Bloekombos and surrounds. You will be lucky to see even one police van after 21:00.

I just read in TygerBurger that should Day Zero come, only businesses and informal settlements will have water.

Why will their water not be cut like ours?

We save just like the next person but yet we have to suffer. I recently saw on YouTube how water is wasted in the townships. People were washing taxis and cars with pipes. What is being done about that?

Wat hulle nou probeer doen, moes hulle al in 2002 gedoen het. Dit dui ook op swak bestuur.

Ek het nog nooit in politiek belanggestel nie, maar soos dit nou gaan, kan ek nie meer stilbly nie.

Die politici moet nou ’n slag doen wat hulle belowe het.

Dit is om die mense te dien en na hul welstand om te sien en dit geld vir die plaaslike én nasionale regerings.

The first sporting achievement this year was picked up by Grade 4 learner, Kylie Schopferer, who swam a beautiful race at the school’s interhouse gala held recently, says Monique Pritchard, school spokesperson.

“Kylie managed to break the under-10 breaststroke record – one that stood for 30 years!”

The gala took place on Friday 26 January.

Fellow learner, Cameron Pritchard, who also competed at the gala, went on to participate in the Western Province Stillwater Pool Championships the following day where he received three medals – two silver and a bronze, Pritchard says.

“He then participated in the Nipper Surf Competition at Milnerton Beach on Sunday and came first in the run-swim-run event,” says Pritchard.

eer as 202 aansoeke is deur plaaslike amateursokkerklubs ontvang om vanjaar deel te wees van die DreamClub100-projek van die sokkerklub Cape Town City.

Die gelukkige 100 klubs is gekies en nou sal die werk begin. “Die aansoeke van die klubs is tussen November en Januarie ontvang en omdat die eerste jaar ’n reuse-sukses was, het ons besluit om die inisiatief vorentoe te vat. Die 100 klubs wat deel is van die projek, ontvang nie net beroepsafrigting nie, maar die klubafrigters ontvang ook hul afrigtingslisensie. Die spelers word deur afrigters van Cape Town City afgerig en uitrusting en toerusting ter waarde van R1 miljoen per jaar word aan die klubs geskenk,” het John Comitis, voorsitter van die klub gesê. Die doel van die DreamClub100 is om sterker bande tussen Cape Town City en die gemeenskapsklubs te bou en ontwikkelingstrukture by die klubs in plek te sit.

“Verlede jaar het 59 afrigters hul Safa D-li-

sensies ontvang. Vanjaar wil Cape Town City probeer om op die getal te verbeter, terwyl die 59 die kans gaan kry om die volgende stap in hul afrigtingsplanne te volg,” het Comitis gesê.

Volgens hom het beroepsokkerklubs in die verlede plaaslike amateurklubs verwaarloos en daarom het City besluit om nou iets daadwerkliks daaraan te doen.

“Ons belê tegniese en geldelike bronne in plaaslike amateurklubs deur die DreamClub100, en ons het reeds resultate gesien.

Beter afrigting, beter toerusting, leiding vir jong spelers en die kans om by ’n beroepsklub aan te sluit, is alles deel van ons projek,” het hy gesê.

Comitis is ook verheug om te sien dat plaaslike afrigters hul afrigtingslisensies het, honderde amateurklubs in truie speel wat deur City geborg is, en die ontluikende spelers wat uit die klubs deur City gekies is.

“Ons verwelkom die 100 klubs van 2018 en ek sien daarna uit om moue op te rol en weer ’n verskil te maak,” het Comitis gesê.

Biggest development show coming to City STEHAN SCHOEMAN It is being dubbed the biggest bodybuilding and fitness development show South Africa has ever seen and not for nothing, with free tanfree division entry and free photography on Saturday 3 March.

The show is the brainchild of Physical Culture Association (PCA) South Africa president, Kevin Schwartz from Bellville.

“This show is aimed at first timers who’ve never competed and who have not placed in the top three at any show no matter which federation they competed in,” says Schwartz.

The show, which will take place at the Durbanville High School auditorium, aims to attract new talent and groom the champions of the future.

The show will cater for juniors, different ladies’ beach bikini and fitness divisions, as well as the men’s beach model, physique muscle model, classic bodybuilding and various weight divisions for the senior bodybuilding line-ups.

Damian Schechter from Sea Point is one of the most well-known faces in the industry and the newly appointed PCA Western Province

chairperson.

“Having the vote of confidence from my PCA WP team, to work with and lead the brand within the province, is honestly one of my greatest career achievements and I couldn’t be any more excited for this opportunity,” says Schechter.

“I started getting involved in bodybuilding and fitness in late 2013 as an athlete. Taking it a step further and becoming a judge soon after was one of the highest accolades of my career. What an absolute privilege it is to be trusted to place, nominate and reward athletes, credibly, for their hard work and support.

“The development show is going to rock South Africa’s socks off!

What an exciting time to be a part of South African bodybuilding and fitness culture,” he says.

“The show will be something new, fresh, interactive and exciting.

What makes this a special show is that it has been specifically designed for first timers and novices.

“It is known that competing in competitions can be costly, and for many of the athletes it is very hard

to fund the preparations. Our athletes will experience free tan-free division entry (only one) and free photography. This initiative is a first in the South African market and we hope that many athletes will flourish through the initiative to grow the sport.

Rian Kuyk, short-stop for the Bellville Tygers, was awarded Best Fielder of the Tournament, with Aiden McKensie, who plays first base for the Tygers, taking home the top award of Player of the Tournament.

Eleven teams, including a mixed invitational team, took to the field to play off against one another in the hopes of taking home the title as overall winners.

Most of the 36 players selected for the u.10 Western Province squad for the upcoming interprovincial tournament proudly played for their respective clubs.

“The tournament was very well supported and we are proud of every single player and parent who participated and represented their club. It is great to see the passion and support that baseball is getting at a ground level,” says Ian Griebenow, junior chairper-

son of the Bellville Tygers. “Not only do we want to thank the parents for their support, but also all our tournament sponsors, BulkSMS.com, Litho Sales and Labels, Nolans Blinds, as well as Play Sport 4 Life. Without their valuable contributions this tournament would not have taken place, never mind have been as successful as it was. Seeing the kids having fun, and at the same time developing the game, is what it is all about.”

The overall winners of the tournament were the Bellville Tygers u.10A team, who beat runners-up Westridge Yankees 26 runs to five in the final. The BulkSMS.com Invitational Team, consisting of players from Helderberg Pirates, Bothasig, Athlone Athletics and Silvertree baseball clubs, won the Plate Final against the VOB McCaws. Durbanville and Crusaders baseball clubs came third and fourth respectively.

“The talent we are seeing at a junior level in the Western Cape is of the highest calibre.

With the type of support and commitment seen this weekend, we are confident that this sport will grow from strength to strength,” says Griebenow.

SAS: RUGBY ACADEMY TO TRAIN 30 BEST YOUNG PLAYERS

Academy trains best of the best AVRIL FILLIES

espite only getting serious about rugby four years ago, Ian Kitwanga (18) from Parklands near Bloubergstrand was recently named one of the 30 best u.19 and u.20 players in the country and chosen for the first intake of the SA Rugby Academy.

These 30 players are based at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS), the official partner to the new initiative with the South African Rugby Union. The academy was launched on Thursday in Stellenbosch.

“I used to play soccer and basketball and enjoyed playing them. When I decided to try rugby at school, I was selected at lock. I never thought I would be one of the best 30 players in the country and be coached by coaches from the Springboks, Junior Springboks and the Springbok Sevens, as well as SAS,” Kitwanga says.

He was part of the Grant Khomo Team of WP for u.16 players, made the WP Academy Team last year and was included in the SA Academy Team.

“I’ll use this opportunity to not only further my academic career but also my rugby career. I never thought I’d get this opportunity when I started playing rugby four years ago at Parklands College,” he says.

He admires two All Black greats, Sonny Bill Williams (centre) and Julian Savea (wing) – Williams because he always stays humble, and Savea because of his aggressiveness on the field, but “off the field he is a gentle giant”.

“My next goal is to make the Junior Boks and to play in the WP u.19 Currie Cup and help Western Province win the competition.”

The 30 players will be based as a group at SAS’s world-class facility in Stellenbosch for the next four months and will return to their respective unions for the rest of the season.

“The coaching by the Bok, Sevens and SAS coaches is part of the programme of SA Rugby to develop the players holistically,” says Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby.

“It is wonderful to have a company as committed as SAS to sport and the upliftment of people to come on board in this very important venture and I would like to thank them for their contribution. The academic side of the programme is very important, as we aim also to prepare players for careers outside of playing rugby, while at the same time keeping the very important aspect of transformation in mind.

“They will receive world-class guidance in terms of what is needed to become a top professional rugby player, but will also study various courses at a number of tertiary institutions across the country.”

Rob Benadie, CEO of SAS, says they want to promote excellence and make a contribution towards transformation in South African rugby.

“We particularly like the idea of partnering with South African Rugby on their rugby academy, as it creates fantastic opportunities for the development of our top black players,” he says.

The launch was attended by Springboks such as Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Dillyn Leyds, Steven Kitshoff and Pieter-Steph du Toit.

Also in attendance were Barend van Graan and some of the Blue Bulls, who were in Cape Town for the pre-season match between the Bulls and the Stormers at Boland Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
