Table View High celebrates diversity

Table View High School recently launched their Diversity Programme for 2018 where learners from diverse cultural groups volunteered to dress up in traditional attire for the school day and spent time at breaks answering questions about their traditions. The programme was launched at a formal assembly during which a procession of the various groups made quite an impression. The launch took place on Friday 16 February. “The day only focused on the way people dress to honour their traditions and culture. Further explorations into music, food, dance and other aspects will follow soon,” says school spokesperson, Lizelle Strydom. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

TABLE VIEW: EFFECTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT NEEDED TO POLICE VACANT LAND

Fence for Tent City RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Plans to fence off the vacant piece of land adjacent to the Potsdam Road taxi and bus interchange, where informal structures were recently removed, are being supported by Traffic Services and Law Enforcement officials. Responding to the Law Enforcement monthly report for Area North at a subcouncil 3 meeting held in Milnerton last week, a senior traffic official indicated that the residents of the so-called Tent City have been returning to the vacant land after being removed by Law Enforcement and Anti-Land Invasion officials. Ward 113 councillor, Joy McCarthy, told TygerBurger earlier this month that the ar-

ea in question had become an eyesore “positioned as it is at the entrance to Table View”. “The vagrants who had taken up residence on this piece of land left the usual mounds of litter visible from the road, and hassled the horse riding school by stealing paddock fencing piles and water for cooking and ablution, as well as attacking the horses and riders,” McCarthy said. Crime was also one of the major concerns, she said. The clearing of the vegetation and the removal of the structures undertaken by combined forces – including Traffic, Law Enforcement and Anti-Land Invasion, the Transport and Urban Development Authority (to whom the land belongs) and the City’s Recreation and Parks Department – was welcomed by McCarthy.

During this operation, 33 structures were broken down. “We cleared the land of Port Jacksons and informal structures, but the very next day they were back,” said a senior traffic official at the meeting. “I think the waste drop-off site is the reason for them coming back, and I suspect this is where they get some of their material. “We removed them again and are monitoring the situation at the moment. “Every day they build houses – I think they are testing us,” he said. He said the only way the problem can be resolved is to fence off the area. The subcouncil meeting was held on Thursday 22 February. Tent City issue is one they have been battling with for over a year now. “We would welcome the fencing off of the area. However, how will they maintain effective Law Enforcement in the area and how will they gain access to that area once the fence is erected? “We notice that the people continuously go back there night after night and erect structures. Are they not going to break the fence? “We need reinforced Law Enforcement on a daily basis, because if you shunt somebody away, they will give you a week and they will come back again. “A fence is a deterrent, but not a comprehensive plan. I know the councillor has been trying her best, but the City has to play its part with supplying the Law Enforcement.”
