Stellar work by the Serious and Violent Crime (SVC) unit of the Milnerton police has resulted in prison sentences for convicted criminals which total an incredible 243 years. Since March, nine cases which the SVC investigated were successfully tried in court. The unit, which consists of Lt Nelson Ngubelanga, Capt Murphy Papa, W/O Lewis Weston, Sgt Shaun van der Heever, Sgt Vuyuweto Mbona, Const Thabo Mwanda and Const Vernon Amos, ensures on a daily basis that justice is served. One particular case stands out above the rest. A young man from Milnerton was murdered in January last year by Mitchells Plain’s Dylan Pieterse (22). After extensive investigations and thorough court proceedings, Pieterse was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. The victim’s sister, who wishes to remain anonymous, told TygerBurger that both she and her family are very impressed with the SVC and are “100 percent relieved” that they can now finally find closure. “Needless to say when my brother died it was a huge shock and an awful ordeal for all of us,” she states. The family was at first sceptical about the police and even considered hiring a private investigator, but their opinion has changed radically. “The unit gave us comfort, support and security! My dad has Parkinson’s disease and we thought they might handle him in a harsh manner, but Sgt Mbona used caution and treated my

dad with absolute respect,” she adds. The SVC’s second-in-command, Capt Papa, also received glowing praise from the victim’s sister: “I was told he is good at what he does and that if anyone can solve the case then he can.” Papa elaborates on the case: “Her brother’s decomposed body with several stab wounds was found on the kitchen floor. There were footprints and a top with bloodstains, but with no direct eyewitnesses it seemed difficult to solve the case.” A breakthrough in investigations led to the unit first apprehending friends of the accused and then the accused himself. Pieterse’s shoes did not match the footprints left at the scene, but Papa nonetheless discovered exactly what type of shoe would leave such a footprint. The unit questioned Pieterse’s mother and it was revealed that she bought similar shoes for her children. Pieterse admitted in court that he owns shoes like that and someone else testified that he loaned the top found at the scene to him. Papa says that forensics determined that the person who killed the victim was wearing the top at the time. The victim’s sister concludes: “The police gave me confidence in them again. Most people don’t even report criminal incidents because they are negative about the police, but my motto is that one should always concentrate on someone’s good points and rather pray to God for their weakness.” Papa elaborated on various of the unit’s other successes, and all follow the same script: never give up and never leave a stone unturned.
The Milnerton Lighthouse resembled a rocketship at Ca pe Canaveral recently when it was given a facelift. The landmark underwent some regular maintenance and it has now returned to its former glory. Photo: Leon Steenkamp
