SERVING SUGGESTION

liquor store at a shopping centre in Plattekloof is the latest business to be hit by a group of thirsty thieves. Since the start of the national lockdown and ban on the sale of alcohol several liquor stores have been looted by criminals. One of the most recent incidents occurred on Friday 31 July around 04:00 at the Tops at the Plattekloof Centre in Olienhout Street. Pierre Gouws, owner of District Watch, says there is security at the centre. “The suspects broke open the doors. The guards pushed the panic button and our armed response vehicles were dispatched. “Obviously because of that they could not get much. They just grabbed whatever they could and ran. They could not get it into the car fast enough. They also had a spotter who saw us coming,” Gouws says. District Watch gave chase. They escaped onto the N1 in a BMW X5, says Gouws. “We do not chase people further than we really need to or have to, because of the risk factor involved for the armed response guards”. Gouws says once the risk factor is gone for the customer, the security team is happy. “In a case of a serious crime, we will do something more,” he adds. In this case the thieves only es-
caped with a few bottles of alcohol. In a recorded video it shows how a bucket with bottles of alcohol was left behind at the entrance as the thieves tried to make an escape. The glass door to the entrance was also shattered. Inside the liquor store, bottles were strewn across the floor. It is alleged that the thieves were targeting high-end whisky. Capt Kevin Williams, Parow police spokesperson, says a stone was used to break the window and that an unknown amount of liquor was stolen. “At the scene of the crime, bottles was left outside the business. The suspects are still at large and the investigation continues,” Williams says. Owner Coenraad Groenewald, confirmed the incident. Several bottle stores in Delft, Langa, Elsies River and Bothasig have been looted to date. In a statement released last week Albert Fritz, provincial minister for community safety, said he condemns the looting. “In recent weeks we have seen a number of lootings of liquor stores, amid violent protest action. “I reiterate that such looting and violent protest action which include the destruction of property and theft is illegal, and punishable by law. “I call on anyone with information about these acts to come forward and report such to the police,” Fritz says.
