s the second wave of Covid-19 crushes over Cape Town, the trauma unit at Tygerberg Hospital seems to be buckling under the burden. A reliable and authoritative source divulged to TygerBurger that the trauma unit was flooded with patients last weekend, while Covid-19 health regulations were flouted. The identity of the source, known to TygerBurger are being protected. “There was simply not enough space for all the patients. Patients, lying in trollies and others propped up in chairs very close to each other, were lining up in the waiting area. Little to no Covid-19 screenings were done and patients that should have been in the patient unit investigation area for Covid-19, were not. All systems failed, and patients could not even be properly triaged,” the source said. Triage systems are methods that

systematically prioritise patients’ treatment according to how urgent they need care. It thus influences the order and priority of emergency treatment. According to the source, panicked trauma staff were told by hospital management that there was not much they could do to salvage the situation. “With cases increasing this situation is untenable and has to be salvaged to protect patients, health workers and stop the spread of the virus,” the source said. According to the source, trauma unit staff were desperate and didn’t know who to turn to. TygerBurger approached the provincial health department, the hospital and the minister of health, Nomafrench Mbombo, with an urgent media inquiry on Friday. Questions posed centre around how fast and how effectively the situation at the trauma unit can be turned around. At the time of going to print the department had not responded to these questions.

‘No power in numbers’ T

he Northern Tygerberg subdistricts in the metro have been identified as a great concern, with an increase in Covid-19 infections recorded this week in Bothasig, Bonteheuwel, Delft, Durbanville and Kraaifontein. Contact tracing lead Delaray Fourie continues to monitor cases with her team closely, and has urged residents to keep safe. “There is no power in numbers this festive season,” he says, “for this means we need to avoid crowded spaces or large gatherings. If you do enter a crowded space, like a shop or beach, remember to wear your mask and keep a distance. We cannot let our guards down. The virus is still here. Power in numbers during Covid-19 means we band together and keep each other safe by follow-

Dune Dusters will be in CT Red Bull Dune Dusters is coming to the Mother City on 16 December at the Atlantis Dunes to see who can conquer the sand in a brutal 8km course. The fittest runners in Cape Town will compete to see who can outlast and overcome the Atlantis Dunes while internally debating whether to tackle the world’s toughest race in shoes or simply barefoot. Red Bull Dune Dusters is a perfect fit for Cape Town as it’s home to one of the largest fitness communities in South Africa. Racers will kick off the race at 08:00 and wrap up at 12:00 with the 2020 champion being crowned at one of the world’s most perfect sandy locations that carries an everchanging landscape of pure white sand dunes reaching up to 50 metres high. The race has 250 participants and is open to men and women. With its soft sand and steep dunes, the race challenges muscles athletes didn’t even know they had and running in deep sand also means that one step forward is usually accompanied by half a step back. But it’s not all gloom and hardship, Red Bull Dune Dusters is considered one of the most entertaining races in the world – reaching the finish line makes tackling those dunes all the more worthwhile. ing the rules.” Fourie encourages residents to know their Covid-19 status and take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread. “If you went for a test you need to isolate until you receive your results,” he said. “If you have tested positive you need to isolate. Avoid attending any gatherings or allowing close contact with anyone until you have recovered or have certainty on your status. While this is not an easy journey, we can do our bit by isolating to contain the spread. Together we can overcome this virus.” Northern and Tygerberg subdistricts recorded six and 15 new deaths, respectively. “Every single resident should assume Covid-19 is everywhere they go and take all

the necessary precautions at every point along their journey,” says Fourie. “To protect our loved ones we need to take this virus seriously and change how we take part in everyday activities, from visiting our local malls to doing holiday shopping or attending end-of-year or ‘breaking-up’ festivities. “It cannot be business as usual amid this pandemic. Wear a mask properly and change it regularly. Remember to wash your cloth mask. Aim to change your mask every day. Continue to practise physical distancing of 1.5 m from others, particularly in crowded spaces, such as queues when shopping. Regularly wash your hands with water and soap, or use sanitiser, whether you’re at home, work or outdoors.”

Summer health risks and how to prepare It’s tempting to give over any responsibility and enjoy your holiday to the maximum. There are a range of risks out there, however, and an emergency medical service says it’s best to be prepared. ER24 communications officer Russel Meiring says emergency services are generally very busy during the festive season. “The public will start making their way to various holiday destinations, which sees an increase in traffic – this in itself will see an increase in the number of motor vehicle collisions,” he says. Here’s why, and how you can avoid them.

Top 5 health risks Meiring says ER24 teams are regularly called into action over the holiday season to attend to the top 5 health risks in South Africa over the holidays, which are: . drownings, . heat-related injuries, . burns, . breathing difficulties and . bites and stings. “Watersports are a lot of fun,” says Meiring, “but if you or your children are not experienced in performing them safely and correctly, they can lead to accidents. You must ensure there is adequate adult supervision.” In SA, summer brings high temperatures and dry air: these can cause dehydration and allergy-related breathing issues, especially if you are unaccustomed to them, says Meiring. Stay hydrated, be wary of staying outdoors too long, and watch children closely for signs of allergies. Drownings Safe swimming for children: . Never allow a child to swim without adult supervision. Also, never leave youngsters unsupervised around water bowls or bathtubs for example. . You can drown in approximately two centimetres of water. . Ensure children wear a life jacket if they cannot swim. . Keep your pool covered with an approved cover when not in use. Safe swimming in open water: . Do not swim too far out into the ocean. After a while, you may struggle due to fatigue or get swept away further due to strong currents. . Wearing a life jacket is vital. Remember your life jacket when participating in water sports such as boating, tubing or rafting. . When at the ocean, swim in designated areas that are supervised by lifeguards. . Never swim alone. . Remember that swimming in open water is not the same as swimming in a pool. . Never dive or jump into unfamiliar or shallow water. What to do if someone is drowning?

. If you are at the coast and you see a person drowning, alert a lifeguard immediately. If you decide to save the person yourself, ensure you wear a floatation device. . If you find a person drowning and are able to get them out of the water, initiate CPR if there is no pulse and breathing. . Do not stop CPR unless the victim starts to breathe on his/her own. . Call for an ambulance as soon as possible and tell them what you are doing so they can send the correct level of care. . Do not put the person in the car and drive to hospital. You may be involved in an accident due to panic or the victim may suffer brain damage while en route to hospital. . In case of a near drowning, seek medical attention as soon as possible and explain clearly to medical staff what has happened. There are instances where secondary drowning occurs. This is more common in children than adults and may be difficult to recognise. The person may seem okay even though they have taken in water that finds its way to the lungs.

Burns When it comes to burns, don’t . remove burnt clothing that is stuck to the body. .use very cold water or ice on a burn. . apply ointments, jellies, sprays of first-aid creams to severe burns. . burst blisters. Do . remove clothing and jewellery that has been burnt. . run tap water or room temperature water over the burn. . apply a loose, clean, dry cloth or bandage to the burnt area after it has cooled and seek medical care. Heat-related injuries “Heatstroke is also very common,” he says. “If left untreated, heat-related injuries can be serious and even lead to death.” Heat-related injuries will present in four categories: . heat cramps (mild). . heat cramps (intermediate) . heat exhaustion and . heatstroke (severe). “You can usually prevent heat injuries by staying hydrated,” Meiring says. However, knowing the signs of dehydration can help you prevent the problem from becoming dangerous. A child who is dehydrated will have: . dry mouth and tongue. . no tears when crying. . less wet nappies than usual. . sunken eyes, cheeks. . a sunken soft spot on top of the skull (babies). . A listless or irritable demeanour. An adult suffering from dehydration will experience: . extreme thirst. ER24 can be contacted for any medical emergency on 084 124.

Community helps clean up their streets T

he Parow Crime Fighters Neighbourhood Watch (Pacrif) recently took cleaning-up matters into their hands when residents, both young and old, and armed with a broom or a shovel, helped to clean up the streets and sidewalks of the area. The clean-up was conducted on Saturday 5 December. Peter Cloete, chairperson, says this was a very exciting moment as it was the first clean-up event arranged by the Pacrif youth executive and that it will continue as the need arises. “They had challenges and experienced first-hand what it takes to be involved in these types of events. This youth group has set out various goals and events they want to host and also want to be involved in the community. “Parow resident, let us help these youngsters make a difference in the area in reaching their goals. They are great rolemodels and will need your assistance,” says Cloete. Further clean-up programmes with others will be rolled out over the next few weeks and will be advertised on the neighbourhood watch’s chat groups. Cloete says Covid-19 protocols was, and will always be, adhered to. V For more informatinon email pacrifnw@gmail.com.

The clean-up done by the Parow Crime Fighters was well supported by both young and old.

Berenice Knockpaal (44) en haar man, Carlo Wayne, is verlede Donderdag in Bellville-handelshof gevonnis.

straf gevonnis, waarvan sewe jaar opgeskort is. Carlo is ’n buitevonnis opgelê.

New chief officer for Tygerberg A

new chief executive officer (CEO) has been appointed at the Western Cape’s largest hospital. Tygerberg Hospital, which boasts a bed capacity of 1 384 and 4 700 staff members, recently welcomed Dr Matodsi Mukosi (51), newly appointed at the helm of this important institution. He was previously CEO of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Minister of Health, commented that she is thrilled to welcome him as the new CEO. Dr Keith Cloete, head of the Health Department, also wished Mukosi all the best in his new role, adding the department is confident he will lead the hospital through the next exciting chapter of its journey as an iconic health institution. Besides delivering specialised services to the people of the province, Tygerberg Hospital is an integral part of the teaching and training platform of health professionals in the province. “Dr Mukosi has demonstrated many excellent leadership qualities that will enable him to unleash the tremendous inherent potential among the staff members to continue growing Tygerberg Hospital as an academic centre of excellence,” says Cloete.

Apart from his extensive management experience, Mukosi’s qualifications include a medical degree from Medunsa, a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Management and Master’s degree in Business Management and Administration from Stellenbosch University. According to Mukosi, his first goal is to build long lasting relationships with staff members. “I will strive to ensure that every staff member feels valued, cared for and supported at Tygerberg Hospital,” he said. “It may seem trivial to some, but I am confident that it is imperative and will generate positive outcomes.”

Dr Matodsi Mukosi has been appointed the new chief executive at Tygerberg Hospital.

Focus on pedestrian safety in Bellville T

he Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) and Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT), with support from the City of Cape Town, have embarked on a project to consider how the streets of Bellville can be improved to provide more positive, safer experiences for pedestrians in the area. The project is designed to identify the needs of businesses and commuters in Bellville and devise strategies that can achieve peoplefriendly spaces in the busy urban centre. The programme culminates in a three-day on-street activation from 17 to 19 December on the intersections at Charl Malan Street and Voortrekker Road, and at Teddington and Kruskal Avenue. In previous years the two organisations have collaborated on producing community-led Open Streets Days, in which a portion of Voortrekker Road was closed to vehicles and open to people of all walks of life. However, the Covid19 pandemic has demanded a different approach. GTP CEO Warren Hewitt said: “Even if the pandemic has curtailed our ability to bring the Bellville community out to enjoy carfree streets, through this approach we are still able to bring improvements and positive experiences to the Bellville CBD. Through these affordable, pop-up interventions, we can refocus life in public spaces on people. That said, we hope these activities will inform planning decisions that can influence future wide-scale and more permanent interventions.” The project this year comprises

Voortrekker Road in Bellville’s CBD. a research study to understand the needs of pedestrians and traders in Bellville’s CBD. The results of this study will be used to create temporary activations at the intersections in question. Teddington, Kruskal Avenue and Charl Malan Street are busy pedestrian thoroughfares which lead to the Bellville public transport interchange – the busiest in the Western Cape. Having a greater understanding of their needs could influence future urban design outcomes in the area. The project will highlight engineering tweaks, safer routes and policy input. These could include, for example, widening intersections,

lengthening traffic signals or using prominent visual markings to encourage vehicles to slow down. The second part of the project is a lively interaction on the streets conceived to encourage drivers and pedestrians to be more mindful of their behaviour on the street. This takes place between 17 and 19 December. Street performers will connect with the people of Bellville, reminding them again of the value of sharing the Open Streets experience; of stopping, connecting and feeling welcome together on the city’s streets. Felicity Purchase, the City’s Mayco member for transport, said: “This project is a manifestation of

the City of Cape Town’s commitment to delivering lively and safe streets and public spaces for everyone. The City has embarked on infrastructure upgrades in the area, and activities such as this project will help to shape future decision making relating to the design of the urban realm. However, there is a continued need to change mindsets among drivers and pedestrians alike. Pedestrians need to be more conscious about their own safety on the streets, and drivers need to adjust their speed and attention to ensure they can keep pedestrians safe.” Under its Integrated Transport Planning Sub-Committee, the City

of Cape Town has formed a collaborative task team with a mandate to mobilise infrastructure adjustments, maintenance work and necessary urban transformations as quick-win projects that support its long-term goals. The task team is supporting Open Streets to undertake related pandemic-responsive tactical urbanism projects across the metro. Open Streets managing director Kirsten Wilkins says: “We have hosted two successful Sunday street closures along Voortrekker Road in the past, but Open Streets Cape Town is not just about wonderful car-free Sundays in neighbourhoods around the city. We have now moved beyond ‘proof of concept’ to working with stakeholders to create long-term change. This is particularly important now, in a climate of economic recovery, while still practically managing the spatial needs of social distancing and pandemic management in highly trafficked areas.” The Open Streets movement is gaining momentum in the Mother City, with partnerships between OSCT and the City’s transport directorate, and others including the GTP, working to actively support interventions, placemaking initiatives and research work that will become more regular and widespread across the metro. A number of partners are already on board to assist. The GTP’s partner in urban regeneration in Bellville, the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District, is involved in the project, providing logistical support to ensure the streets are clean and safe.

Ensure safety before going on holiday RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

B

efore locking up and going on your annual family summer holiday, perhaps it is wise to ensure that which you leave behind is safe, sound and secure. Deon Maneveld, chairperson of the Parow Community Policing Forum (CPF), provided some tips on home safety while away on holiday, or for when leaving your home unattended for an extended period of time. First and foremost he says, it is important to create the illusion that there are people at home when leaving on holiday. “Ensure some lights are lit during the night and ask someone to open and close so-

me of your curtains during the day. Let them remove letters and pamphlets from your letterbox. If you have a home alarm, activate it and alert the security company of the time you will be away,” Maneveld warns. He says it is also vital that you inform your local neighbourhood watch about your getaway trip. “Ensure your home is secured with solid burglar bars, security fencing, burglar gates and so on. Do not leave objects close to your fence making it easy for criminals to gain access to your property or making it easy for them to get away. Ensure your valuables are safe and securely locked away.” Maneveld says it is also wise to check with your insurer whether you need to notify

them when going away for an extended period. “You could lose a claim if your home is broken into and your policy stipulates your home should not be unattended,” Maneveld warns further. He concludes: “Try and refrain from sharing pictures of you and your family taken at the place where you are enjoying your holiday. Refrain from posting comments like ‘my family and I are enjoying our holiday here in Durban’ whilst your home is in Cape Town.” . In a statement issued earlier this month the provincial transport and public works department also warned travellers to exercise caution during the festive period. “There has been a steady increase of acti-

ve cases of Covid-19 in the Western Cape over the last few weeks. If you are planning to travel over the festive season, wear your mask over your nose and mouth at all times in any public transport vehicle, whether it is a minibus, a bus, a train, or an aircraft,” the statement reads. The department also encourages travellers who are planning long road trips to have their lights, indicators, windscreen wipers, brakes, steering, shock absorbers and tyres checked for faults before departing on a long journey. “Plan short breaks when driving long distances as fatigue can put your life and the lives of others in danger,” the department says.

Security intervenes, stop alleged drunk driver RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Members of a local private security company recently had to stop a suspected drunk driver from causing any further damage to her vehicle and anyone else around her, following an accident in Sienna Drive, Burgundy Estate. The driver of the Nissan apparently failed to stop, according to the security company District Watch. Two of its members, who were dispatched to the scene, intervened. “It was reported a resident had left a complex and then drove straight into the wall of another complex,” reads part of a report on the security company’s social media page. “On arrival at the scene the members noticed the female driver was under the influence of alcohol and a neighbour also informed them she was on other medication

too. “She was determined to leave the scene, but the members managed to talk her out of it. According to the report, the driver went over a pavement and hit a tree. She put the car into drive and pulled away. “The members managed to stop her and removed her from the vehicle,” it said. The woman was taken away by her exhusband, the security company said. A towing company removed her vehicle. The accident occurred on Saturday 5 December. Gawie Venter, sales and marketing Manager at the District Group, told TygerBurger the police had been contacted. “But they replied they could not assist, as they were busy with another crime incident,” he said. Capt Kevin Williams, spokesperson for

the Parow police, was approached for comment, but had not responded by the time of going to print. Several people reacted to the news of the accident, many saying the driver could have endangered other lives. “Why not call the police? Driving under the influence of anything is a crime,” one person who reacted to the post said. “She could have injured or killed someone in the process.” “So what happens now to all that property damaged and the fact that she was driving under the influence?” another asked. One of the property owners mentioned he was nearly injured when the motorist slammed into his wall. He claims he was behind the wall at the time of the incident. TygerBurger approached him for comment, but he declined citing personal and legal reasons.

The driver of a Nissan vehicle ploughed into a wall of a complex in Burgundy Estate recently, causing significant damage to it and other properties in the estate. The driver was stopped by two members of private security company District Watch.

Limit on people at braai and picnic spots

Slangseisoen het vanjaar vroeër begin BRENDEN RUITER

A

s from last weekend a limited number of visitors will be allowed at picnic spots and braai areas within the City of Cape Town’s nature reserves. The City manages 21 nature reserves that are popular destinations, particularly over weekends and on public holidays. Apart from hiking and water activities, some reserves have picnic and braai areas where visitors can relax and socialise with friends and family. Being open air spaces reserves are a relatively safe option amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, but the picnic spots and braai areas have become very crowded lately. The City’s Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, said due to the steep increase in Covid-19 positive

cases locally, “the City has no alternative but to restrict the number of visitors to picnic spots and braai areas as and when needed. This is to ensure we comply with the health and safety protocols required to limit the spread of the pandemic, and to protect our visitors and staff as far as possible.” Visitors and residents are still welcome but must wear masks and adhere to social distancing. ‘‘Those wanting to have a picnic in a reserve are advised to please adhere to the restrictions, should they arrive at their destination and the picnic or braai area cannot hold any more people at a safe social distance,’’ said Nieuwoudt. The restriction on the number of visitors at picnic and braai areas will apply as follows:

. currently until further notice; . as and when needed, depending on the number of visitors; . in accordance with the Covid19 health and safety protocols; . no alcohol is allowed in the City’s nature reserves, with the exception of pre-approved events; . visitor numbers per event, film shoot or hall booking will have to comply with Covid-19 lockdown regulations. Blaauwberg, Table Bay, Durbanville, Bracken, Helderberg, and False Bay nature reserves have picnic and braai areas. Other areas in the nature reserves, including the hiking trails and open waterbodies, will be accessible as per normal on condition that visitors comply with the Covid-19 health protocols.

Keeping children safe at the beach The City of Cape Town’s Identikidz programme, which registers and issues children at the beach with an identification armband, will be available at 16 beaches on priority days during the festive season. The programme ensures the safety of children who may get lost, disorientated in the crowds or wander away from their parents or caregivers. Visitors are encouraged to register their children on arrival at the beach, with the Identikidz staff members who will be dressed in orange T-shirts. ‘‘Parents and guardians are reminded that it’s not a babysitting service and should not replace the responsibility of parents to supervise their children at all ti-

mes while they’re on the beach,” said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. ‘‘It simply means should a child wander away, we are able to find their family. During the previous season, 535 children were reunited with their parents or caregivers, while 15 were handed over to the department of social development when they could not be returned to their families. It is traumatic for children when they cannot find their loved ones, and I implore parents and guardians to be vigilant.” Contributing factors to children going missing on beaches include: . Children visiting beaches without parents or an adult;

. Parents or guardians intoxicated and not realising the child is gone; . Parents leaving the beach without their children; . Parents do not supervise their children while at the beach. ‘‘Most parents are responsive to the programme and this contributes to its success,” Badroodien said. “They bring their children and come looking for the Identikidz stations on the beaches and the young ones know where to come if they get lost.’’ V The participating beaches are: Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Strandfontein, Gordon’s Bay, Strand, Monwabisi, Harmony Park, Mnandi, Big Bay, Sea Point, Silverstroom, Camps Bay, Lagoon Beach, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton Beach and Maiden’s Cove.

Dit is so amper asof hulle glo ’n virus pas aan by inperkingsvlakke, of raak eers aansteeklik wanneer jou toets positief terugkom. – Cecilia Hume (Redakteur)

The year in review | Die jaar wat was This year has been one for the history books with Covid-19 dominating headlines around the world throughout the year. While words like coronavirus, comorbidities, lockdown, pandemic, work-from-home, facemask, sanitiser, quarantine, self-isolate, and (only in South Africa) prohibition and cigarette ban, became part of our daily lives and vocabulary, not every news story revolved around Covid-19. Since this is the last TygerBurger for 2020, we asked our journalists to look back on the year and choose their most memorable news stories and front pages, whether it was hardcore, serious issues, sad, uplifting, cute, funny or just ridiculous. Kompetisie keer in 2021 weer terug E

The building of the University of the Western Cape’s Unibell Student Residence is well under way.

Student residence on track Construction on the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) 2 700-bed Unibell student residence is well on track, and the first “pocket” that will house the administration area is expected to be operational in early 2022. The site is situated in Belhar, within walking distance of UWC’s main campus and the train station. Three pockets of land are currently being developed, and brickwork is already clearly evident on the section that will accommodate the student housing department’s administration area, which needs to be ready to welcome the first intake of students in two years’ time. Shamil Slamdien, Unibell’s project manager, says work on the R640 million residence is in full swing, with about 20% of the construction completed. “Work started in September this year,” he said, “and despite having to observe strict Cov-

id-19 protocols, in addition to the usual health and safety measures necessary on a construction site, the project has maintained momentum. Earthwork machinery can be seen moving around the precinct and construction work is reaching floor level in two of the pockets.” Unibell will offer a combination of unitstyle and hotel-style residences, with a communal area for relaxation, shared kitchen spaces and laundry rooms, as well as a gym, TV rooms, Wi-Fi and study facilities. According to the Department of Higher Education South Africa is short of at least 300 000 beds for tertiary students. This development, which will ensure accessible and convenient accommodation for almost 3 000 UWC students, is much-needed to help address this burgeoning crisis. The development has also created employment for 1 000 people, predominantly from the local community.

A Battle on at netball championship Jodee Johannes of Cape Town (right) and Elmere van der Burg of Dr Kenneth Kaunda battle for possession of the ball in their semi-final clash on the fifth day of the National Netball Championships at the Zwartkloof Private Game Reserve, Bela Bela in Limpopo on Friday 11 December. Cape Town suffered a 54-16 loss. PHOTO: REG CALDECOTT

Annual endurance race delivers nail-biting action Despite the issues caused by Covid-19 restrictions, the Livingstone Baths eight-hour endurance race for lightweight motorcycles at Killarney International Raceway’s Karting Circuit on Saturday 12 December was one of the most successful in the 38-year history of this iconic annual event. Conditions were perfect, with bright sunshine and a light south-easterly wind, and the circuit itself was clean and stayed that way throughout the event. Despite the usual crashes – dozens of them! – just one rider required hospital treatment (and he was back before the end of the race) and only three short safety-bike periods interrupted eight hours of dynamic racing, filled with epic comebacks, dramatic changes of fortune and heart-warming camaraderie. International SuperStock star David “McFlash” McFadden put the Honda CBR150 of pre-race favourites Team RST, led by British rider Jonny Towers and including Kewyn Snyman and short-circuit hots-

hot Jason Linaker, on pole with a 48.780 second qualifying lap. Van der Walt got the best of the traditional Le Mans start and grabbed the early lead with McFadden all over him like a cheap suit, followed by the Team HSC CBR150 shared by Nicholas Hutchings, Franco Flach, Max Mandix and Abigail Bosson (one of only two ladies in the race) and White on the Team 60 machine. White, however, set off like a man on a mission. He passed Hutchings for third on the third lap, took second from Mc Fadden on lap eight and was reeling in the leader when he threw it away big time in the Pits Esses on lap 14, changing the entire shape of the race after only 11 minutes. In addition to the usual handlebar and footpeg damage, for which the team were well prepared, the Team 60 CBR150 bent its front suspension in the crash, forcing crew chief Allan Westman to rush home and fetch a spare set of forks from another bike. All in all, White’s mishap

The eight-hour is one of the few events that still features the spectacular but risky Le Mans-style start. Here David McFadden on the No.17 Team RST CBR150 leads the field off the start. PHOTO: COLIN BROWN cost them almost an hour and a half and they rejoined stone last, 100 laps behind the leaders. Meanwhile, McFadden took over the lead on lap 19 and held it until the crew was forced to pit to replace a flat battery near the

end of the first hour. At that point they were just 1.5 seconds behind IMI after 71 laps. Team 60, however, were out to prove a point. They were the fastest team on the circuit, having posted a best lap of 48.22 seconds during the fifth hour and made up four laps on the RST machine. Twenty-two minutes into the second half of the race the Powerflow machine stopped on the circuit, victim of a broken coil wire. Crew chief Dick Bate had the bike up and running in a matter of minutes but the team had dropped five places, moving HSC up to third. At the end of the fifth hour Powerflow were down in eighth on 316 laps, behind Jack Hammer’s (323 laps), the No. 49 CBR150 of Andre Calvert, Michael Wahl and Derek Davids (324), Team 111 (324), Team No Rush (325), HSC (328), IMI (334) and RST on 341 laps. The honours of the day went to RST as team principal Jonny Towers took the flag after a near-record 551 laps in eight dramatic hours.
