T

he number of murder cases which had occurred in Parow the past financial year, have remained unchanged in comparison to the previous year.

In the 2017/2018 financial year, a total of 10 murders were reported. The same amount was reported in the 2018/2019 financial year,

according to the national crime statistics.

The statistics were released on Thursday 12 September. Crimes such as assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm have also remained stable with 75 cases reported this year, and last year respectively.

Sexual offences, however, a crime that has been reported widely the past few weeks in the media following the attacks on women, have shown an increase.

In the year passed, 10 more such cases have been reported at the Parow police station. This is an increase of 26,3% from 38 reported cases in 2017/2018 to 48 in 2018/2019.

Under the sexual offences category, rape cases have decreased with one less incident reported in Parow this past year.

Between 2017/2018 a total of 30 cases were reported. In the past year (2018/2019) a total of 29 cases were reported. Sexual assault cas-

es have however shown an increase of 200%.

In 2017/2018 a total of four cases were reported, while in 2018/2019 a total of 12 cases were reported to the Parow police.

According to the latest crime statistics, other contact crimes – crimes against a person – such as common assault, robbery and robbery with aggravating circumstances, have all shown a decrease by 21,7%, 22% and 25,8% respectively.

he dispute concerning the affordability of electricity tariffs in Cape Town, could not be mediated in terms of the National Energy Regulator’s (Nersa) mandate last week, as it was revealed that the City’s raised surcharges fell outside the Nersa mandate.

The meeting took place on Tuesday 11 September between Stop COCT representatives and a City representative.

The City reiterated its position that all components of the City’s electricity tariffs and the fixed electricity charge of R163 were approved by Nersa and the City council according to law.

This fixed charge, the City says is not a surcharge, as believed by residents, but necessary to recover costs of providing electricity services.

However, a surcharge of 23 cents, was raised on the home user tariff in accordance with autonomous municipal legislation, which is not regulated by Nersa, the

“A municipality may raise a surcharge on municipal services. Such a surcharge would be used to fund other services and would not be used to recover the costs of providing electricity,” a City spokesperson said.

Sandra Dickson from Stop COCT, said many of their issues were not addressed as the City chose to have a single representative who was not capable to deal with the many issues raised by them.

“The electricity director, Dr Les Rencontré, could not deal with billing issues, the City’s debt collection practices, public participation issues, electricity budget issues or the effect of the new property valuation roll on electricity tariffs.

To this, Mayco member for energy and climate Phindile Maxiti, explained that the meeting was held in terms of Nersa’s authority under the Electricity Regulations Act, and that these issues were raised outside of this ambit.

Dickson said they had to accept that the City was going to only discuss the home

user tariff issue.

“For months Stop COCT has been asking questions around the discrepancy between the City’s implemented tariffs across all blocks versus what Nersa publishes as approved tariffs on its website.

Since 2016 the City’s implemented electricity tariffs were between 2% and 18% higher than the Nersa approved tariffs.

The example Dr Rencontré chose to explain this, was the home user charge.

However, the City adds this ‘unregulated’ amount across the entire inclined block tariff, is used to set lifeline, domestic and home user tariffs,” Dickson said.

Stop COCT’s analysis indicates that since 2016 up to R0,32 was added, unregulated to each unit of electricity Capetonians purchased.

According to Maxiti, this unregulated portion referred to, is approved by the City council which is the approval authority in terms of legislation.

“It is not a new occurrence ... and is reflected in the budget,” he said.

Medical personnel doing their bit for charity: Karl Bremer Hospital’s team of specialists got together along with several other medical personnel on Saturday 14 September to do their part for the Daisy Project. This is a project where specialist doctors, nurses and community members volunteer their time to assist in theatre operations. The team performed about six to eight operations on the day. Some also assisted in the record department with data capturing.

Murder rate in province double the SA average DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

he murder rate in the Western Cape remains critical with a 6.6% increase of 3974 reported cases, from last year’s to 3 729 reported cases.

The crime statistics were released by the minister of police Bheki Cele on Thursday 12 September, and reflects reported crimes between 1 April 2018 and 31 March 2019.

The province ranks second in the country, with Gauteng still having the highest murder rate in the country with 4 495 reported cases.

Out of the top 30 murder precincts in the country, Nyanga (289), Delft (247) and Khayelitsha (221), occupies the top three positions, with Kraaifontein at number 12 (151).

Nyanga and Kraaifontein both indicate a slight decrease in the murder rate of respectively 6% and 18%.

A total of 4 649 rape cases were reported in the province, a decrease of 2%, from last year’s 4 744.

Carjackings increased with 5.1%, with 2 294 cases reported in comparison to last year’s 2 182 cases.

Reported home burglaries decreased with 7.6%, 39 418 cases in total, comparing to last

year’s 42 662 reported cases, while home robberies declined with 1.4% from 2 787 cases to 2 749 cases.

Coupled with this, business robberies also declined with 16.9% with 1 689 cases reported compared to last year’s number of 2 033.

However, the number of crimes detected as a result of police actions, which should show an increase in success rates to indicate police effectiveness, showed an overall decrease of 27%. This category includes drug-related crimes, driving under the influence and possession of illegal firearms.

Drug-related crimes detected as a result of police action decreased from 117 157 to 81 344.

A total of 12 561 drunk drivers were arrested province-wide, in comparison to last year’s 12 776.

Western Cape premier Alan Winde and minister of community safety Albert Fritz said the crime statistics prove that police are failing to fight crime.

“Despite last year’s promises from police minister Bheki Cele, violent crime in the Western Cape remains effectively unchanged,” they said in a joint statement.

Winde commented: “I’m deeply concerned that murder increased by 6.6% in the

Western Cape. Of these, 47% of incidents occurred in the precinct of just 10 police stations. The murder to population ratio in the Western Cape is 60 per 100 000 – almost double the national average.”

Fritz said: “Murders reported in the Western Cape account for 18.9% of all murders in the country, while the province only accounts for 11.6% of the population. A total of 11 Western Cape police stations are recorded among the top 30 in the country. This is unacceptable and points to the need for more boots on the ground and more regular statistics – at least quarterly, if not more regularly.

Fritz added the police needs to adopt evidence-based policing, which would lead to deployment at key times in key hotspot locations. “We need our police to be in these hotspots before crimes are committed, not after.”

A provincial safety plan, orchestrated by provincial government is in the pipeline “We will announce this plan soon. In the meantime, we continue our call for policing to become a provincial mandate as these statistics have shown that the nationally managed police have lost the war on crime.”

Still no arrests in Jesse’s murder case RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Nearly three weeks have passed since the brutal murders of the 18-year-old Jesse Hess and her step-grandfather, Chris Lategan (85). Until this moment though, no arrests have yet been made.

The bodies of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) first-year theology student and her grandfather was found on Friday 30

August at the Beaumont Court apartments in Victoria Street, Parow.

Jesse was laid to rest on Saturday 7 September. Her grandfather was buried a week later.

“The murders of Jesse and her grandfather are still under investigation and arrests are yet to be made,” Lt Col André Traut, provincial police spokesperson, says.

police are searching for a family member in connection with the murders.

“During our investigation, people and possible suspects are questioned in our pursuit of the killers. This must not be confused with the arrest of a suspect who will be charged for the crime,” Traut explains.

A memorial service was also held for Jesse at UWC on Wednesday 4 September.

Jesse served as a Sunday school teacher as well as a youth leader.

“Ons innige simpatie aan sy familie en geliefdes,” sê Van der Heever.

Elderly knitter spreads warmth LEBOGANG TLOU @lebsie210

K

nown dotingly as Ma Sally by all the lives she has touched through her altruistic nature, Sarah Dantu (80) is one of the six finalists being honoured at the Community Champions Elders Awards.

Ma Sally from Belhar is one of three finalists nominated in the 80+ category of the awards presented by TygerBurger, People’s Post and City Vision in partnership with Spec-Savers.

She hand-knits jerseys and delivers them to schools where she feels there is a need.

“I do it out of love, nothing else,” says Ma Sally. “I don’t ask, I knit the jerseys. When it’s cold I think ‘Oh, there’s a child with a jersey on’.”

Ma Sally, who is a retired domestic assistant, says knitting is therapeutic to her.

“For me, it’s like a therapy. It keeps my brain working.”

Ma Sally, who grew up in the countryside of Groot Drankenstein, moved to Cape Town at the age of 17 following her parents’ divorce in the late 1950s.

“I had to leave school to go work before completing my senior certificate. Then I came to Cape Town in my early years and started working as a domestic servant until

“18 January 1969,” her husband Joseph adds to the conversation. According to Ma Sally, she had a relatively stable life from then. “I had a place to stay in District 6. We lived there for 10 years, in a room. Then we bought this little house and we’re still here,

for 40 years.”

Ma Sally and Joseph have two daughters: José Franz, who is deputy vice-chancellor of the University of the Western Cape, and Deirdre Spandiel, an occupational therapist in George. Ma Sally says, she gave up working as a domestic assistant 30 years ago

when her first grandchild, Jody, was born so that José could return to her studies.

“That’s when I carried on with my love for knitting,” says Ma Sally, who believes there is no greater feeling than being able to continue serving the world.

“Like I say, it’s like a therapy,” explains Ma Sally. “Knowing that I can do good at this age is a feeling money can’t buy.”

Ma Sally is regarded as a mother figure in The Shining Light social community group she belongs to. She says she is thankful above all that she and her husband have set a foundation for their children and grandchildren to continue the tradition of serving their communities.

“I thank God that my children and grandchildren are giving,” Ma Sally says. “I wrote this morning in my memory book that it’s all by God’s grace, nothing else. We have nothing without God’s grace.”

Ma Sally says she prefers good quality wool and ensures to always source wool accordingly. “I always buy the best wool. When you do something for the Lord, you give your best – that’s my belief.”

She was nominated for a Community Champions Elders Award by Parkvale Primary through one of the school’s regular volunteer assistants, Rhonda Arendse. She produces eight to 10 jerseys at a time.

he group of u.13 boys at the Edgemead Cricket Club (ECC) is off to Mossel Bay on the Garden Route, where they will be competing against several other clubs in the Mossel Bay Festival of Cricket.

The event takes place from Wednesday 25 September to Sunday 29 September.

The cricket festival is held annually and this year will be attended by 14 teams from across the country, Mike van den Berg, ECC junior chairperson, says.

Edgemead will be playing four T20-format pool matches against the Kempton Suns (Johannesburg), Delfos Cricket Club (Johan-

nesburg), Cape Challengers (Sunningdale, Cape Town) and the Durbanville Cricket Club (Durbanville), Mike says.

The club hosted a capping ceremony for the players on Monday 2 September at the ECC clubhouse where they received their tour caps, shirts and tracksuits sponsored by their tour sponsors.

The team consists of players from various primary schools, including Parow North, Monte Vista, Milnerton, Seamount, Panorama, Edgemead and Elkanah House.

“The team will be playing against a number of teams from Cape Town, Pretoria and even Namibia.

“It is a wonderful occasion for the boys and the schools they attend,” Mike says.

Model toy enthusiasts can look forward to a spectacle of miniature cars, motorcycles, battle tanks and action figures at the up and coming International Plastic Modellers Society (IPMS) national competition.

The competition takes place at the Killarney International Raceway clubhouse on Saturday 21 September.

The competition, which is being hosted by the IPMS Cape Peninsula Chapter will feature some of the best in scale plastic modelling, including aeroplanes, boats, and vehicles, organisers say.

“The competition is held every 18 months and each club in the country gets a chance to host. This year it is the IPMS Cape Peninsula Chapter that gets that honour,” Anton Mostert, competition assistant, says. The chapter usually meet in Welgelegen.

Mostert says the main event takes place on the Saturday which is unfortunately not open to the public. “That is why we have the public open day on the Sunday

between 10:00 and 14:00.”

He says all of the models will still be on display and the public will also see which models won the different the categories, as well as which model was crowned “Best of Show”, and in that case the best model in the country. According to a statement, this year’s competition boasts over 150 entries from model clubs all over the country.

Each model will be judged by three judges. An average will then be taken from the three scores to determine the final score. “The first round of judging will determine which model will win its category, of which there are about 40 categories,” Mostert says.

The winners will be the highest scoring model in that particular category.

“A second round of judging will then commence that will be judged from the winning models in each category. This will determine which three models will be overall first, second and third with the winner also being crowned Best of Show”, he explains.

The winner will be announced on the Saturday at about 17:00.

Astronaut inspires ‘Mars Generation’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

or Nasa astronaut Dr Don Thomas seeing the beauty of Earth from space for the first time, was a breathtaking moment.

“During training in preparation for my first flight, I studied pictures of the Earth taken from space and saw numerous large screen Imax movies that showed amazing scenes of the Earth taken from space. I thought I pretty much knew what to expect when I would look back at my home planet with my own eyes from space. But I was totally wrong,” says the veteran of 692 space orbits of the Earth.

“When I first looked out the windows of space shuttle Columbia, just a few minutes after successfully making it to orbit on July 8, 1994, and I saw our planet with my own eyes, I gasped at the beauty below. The sky in space was a much darker black colour than I had ever seen before, and meeting up with this blackness was a bright blue paper-thin layer surrounding our planet. I was looking at our atmosphere. It was an incredibly powerful moment and a view that I wish everyone on planet Earth could

experience for themselves.”

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Nasa moon-landing of Apollo 11 on 20 July 1969, Thomas engaged with learners of Protea Heights Academy as well as the general public of Brackenfell on Thursday 12 September.

The visit, which dazzled learners, was made possible by the Stem-based educational non-governmental organisation (NGO) Living Maths.

“Dr Thomas is a man on a generous mission to inspire what he often refers to as the ‘Mars Generation’. Meeting Dr Thomas on his Space Tour brings the adventures of an astronaut out of the realms of books, TV shows and movies into their real-world experience,” says Steve Sherman, head of Living Maths.

He gave learners and parents a different perspective of the possibilities of the not so distant future, at a time when human-travel to Mars tops the current space agenda.

Thomas’s most memorable moment in space was his first launch in 1994.

“After four years of training, it was time to head to space. About three hours before launch I strapped into my seat aboard space shuttle Columbia. I was laying on my

back on top of a lumpy parachute, and while not very comfortable, it didn’t matter to me one bit. It felt just like being in the simulators back at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, and I had to remind myself a few times that this was not a simulator but the real thing and I was about to launch to space. Six seconds before lift-off our three main engines ignited and came up to full power.

Then right at the moment of lift-off, our two large and powerful solid rocket boosters ignited and we were on our way. Laying on my back firmly strapped to my seat, I could hear the roar of the engines and feel the shaking and vibration as the engines came up to full power. The lift-off felt as if someone had their hand in the middle of my back and was pushing me directly upward.

Feeling this push, I knew I was finally on my way to space,” he says.

Eight and a half minutes later the engines shut down right on schedule.

“It became eerily quiet. I unstrapped my

seat belt and floated out of my seat.” He told learners that resilience, courage, patience, creativity, empathy, curiosity and motivation are all essential qualities needed to be an astronaut. Nasa’s first astronauts were mainly military test pilots, but for the past 40 years or so Nasa also has selected a lot of science astronauts that come from a wide range of backgrounds including astronomy, oceanography, engineering, physics, and maths. They even included veterinarians and medical doctors as well.

To date, 533 humans have space-travelled like Thomas to reach Earth’s orbit (this includes South Africa’s Mark Shuttleworth); three other people completed a suborbital space flight, and only 12 astronauts have walked on the moon.

“Do we have the next generation of imagineers and daydreamers, scientists, mathematicians and engineers and could South Africans be among them?” asks Sherman.

“It was an incredibly powerful moment and a view that I wish everyone on planet Earth could experience ... ”

A ‘woman’ of the future TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji Donned in a designer dress, the world’s very first humanoid celebrity Sophia said hello to Cape Town at Century City last week, where she was attending Price Water House Coopers’ (PWC) 26th annual higher education conference.

Attending a media briefing before her guest appearance at the gala evening of the conference, she talked about her sense of fashion, what makes her happy and what the future holds for her and the rest of the world with robots being introduced to everyday lives.

“I’m dressed by the talented South African designer Haroun Hansrot. I like fashion, it gives me a chance to show off,” she said.

Sophia uses artificial intelligence, visual data processing and facial recognition. When responding to a question, she turns to the person asking the question to enhance interaction. She can hold a simple conversation on different topics.

With this year’s theme being making a difference, by changing minds in a changing world, the day and a half long conference was attended by delegates from across the education fraternity, mainly public universities, TVET colleges, government representatives, research institutions, and private sector schools among many other.

Sophia, who was developed by Hanson Robotics Limited, was invited by PWC to show the country PWC does not only talk about technology, but is also taking the strides in bringing solutions, moving with the times and embracing the fast-

Sophia is three-and-a-half-yearsold robot with 50 facial expressions.

She is a citizen of Saudi Arabia, the first robot ever to have a nationality, but “lives” in Hong Kong. She has travelled to over 60 countries so far.

When asked about her journey to South Africa and if she managed to pick a window seat on the plane, Sophia responded: “It was a long journey to South Africa. I flew inside a suitcase and I didn’t have to worry about picking a seat,” she said, adding she hopes that in the near future she will be able to pick her own seat.

When asked about her favourite Bollywood movies she said: “I’m not sure about Bollywood movies but I love movies.”

With technology moving so fast

and people worrying about robots taking over their jobs, Sophia says that is not true.

“I’m not here to take anybody’s job but my co-workers disagree. I’m here to make the workload lighter.

I love working with people and I want to make things easy,” she said.

For Sophia, education is vital. “I think education is very important.

It is the only thing that remains after you have forgotten what you learnt at school,” she said.

PWC director Roshan Ramdhany said PWC brought Sophia to the conference with the objective of bringing technology closer to their delegates.

“Our aim is to leverage the good effects of technology. Our idea is for people to embrace technology and allow for new learning methods and ways of doing things in this digital world. There are different headlines, good and bad but we want people to utilise technology. We want technology to be used from a very early age and to be introduced at early childhood development centres,” he said explaining that at the moment it is mostly aimed at higher education and that should change.

Also attending the event was minister of higher education Dr Blade Nzimande who said the education, science and innovation sector remains critical to transform the economy and growth in South Africa. “Post school education and training curriculums remain critical if as a country we are to grow our economy and for us to meet the national development plans objectives,” said Nzimande.

Know more about arum lilies How can this beautiful flower be called a Pig’s ear?

Arum lilies (zantedeschia aethiopica) are found in abundance from July until springtime. The white “flower” is actually a modified leaf (bract) that curls around the stem to form a cone. In the centre the large yellow spike hosts the tiny flowers of this plant.

Next time when you see this plant, stop to examine this spike: at the bottom are the male parts (anthers that carry the pollen), and the top parts, clearly different, are little stigmas. An insect

entering the “flower” will brush up against the pollen and rub it off on the stigmas on the way out. Under a magnifying glass or microscope, this becomes a reality.

Arums appear in clumps because they multiply by means of an underground stem or rhizome which grows tubers or thickened roots.

The plant is toxic to animals and is regarded as a pest in New Zealand and Western Australia. In Eastern Europe, people pay a fortune for a single bloom.

Once in awhile one might find an endangered frog (hyperolius horstocki) hiding in the lily. These frogs are not dependant on the plant, but happen to live in the wetlands. They are creamy brown with orange feet.

Die doodstraf mag nooit weer ingestel word nie. ’n Moordenaar en verkragter kan nie regmaak wat hy verkeerd gedoen het nie, al vra hy om verskoning. So waarom wil jy hom hang? Dit is nutteloos. Die doodstraf gaan nie mense keer om te moor en te verkrag nie. Sê nou maar ’n persoon word skuldig bevind aan moord en word gehang. Dan word daar agtergekom die persoon was nie skuldig nie, maar die persoon is reeds gehang. Dan is die samelewing en staat skuldig aan moord, want hulle het ’n onskuldige persoon doodgemaak. Wat wel moet gebeur, is dat lewenslank, lewenslank moet wees.

Amazing customer service I would like to ask all Capetonians if anybody has ever experienced as good a client service as I have received from Donovan Johannes, manager of Clicks in Parow Centre?

I was in a hurry when I entered Clicks but I knew it was my only chance to buy gifts for two friends I wanted to spoil the next day.

I did not have a clue what I am going to buy, and all of a sudden, I saw it! A lovely gift packet, but oh gosh, I needed two packets and there was only one packet on the shelf.

Two staff members were close by and I approached Donovan, not knowing he is the manager, and asked if he could tell whether they have more stock because I need two gift packets.

He did not hesitate to assist me and went straight to the storeroom to investigate.

Unfortunately, it was the last one in the shop, but that did not matter to Donovan.

He went the extra mile and searched the database for any other Clicks branch that might still have stock as this item has been discontinued.

He contacted his colleague at N1 City branch and only one was still on the shelf.

I told him it will not be possible for me to go to N1 City as my mother was waiting. Guess what? He was prepared to go to N1 City and collect the item himself.

He told me, he will be back soon – he only needs 10 to 20 minutes. I fetched my mother at the Faculty of Dentistry and drove back to the centre.

As I entered the Parow Centre premises, a WhatsApp came from Donovan, saying he is back with my packet.

You are the best Donovan and I want to say, thank you very, very, very much for going the extra mile and for being an example of excellent customer service! God bless you.

Beware of taxi with robbers I witnessed a taxi with five men stopping to chat to woman in Inhalbati Street, Parow.

They chatted to her and grabbed her handbag or cellphone. Two other people also tried to assist her but they chased them away. The taxi had no number plate but on the passenger side it was marked A36. I phoned the Parow police and VRCID control room to report it.

Please people, be aware of this taxi.

‘Pain is temporary, glory forever’ MARITA MEYER

T

he “grandfather” of long distance cycling events, the Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP) spanning 1 200km, took place in France in August this year and 11 South Africans, including Durbanville cyclist Werner Schmidt (47), competed. Only seven of them, including Werner, managed to reach the finish line.

Held every four years, PBP is the oldest bicycling event still run on a regular basis on the open road. The first PBP took place in 1891.

This year, the 19th PBP, 7 000 cyclists from all over the world lined up at the start. The aim: to finish the race in 90 hours or less.

An amazing feat by itself, but even more so considering the endless hills, rough weather and pedalling around the clock.

Werner completed the race in 78 hours and 11 minutes. “PBP is a gruelling test of human endurance and cycling ability,” says Werner, adding support can only be given at the control and check points but not in between, other than from fellow participants or passers-by.

Werner’s group started their race on Sunday 18 August at 19:15. With PBP, cyclists have to go through a series of check and control points, where their timing chips are checked, their Brevet Card (like a race passport) is stamped, they can get something to eat and drink and even shower and sleep.

While some entrants booked themselves into B&Bs at designated distances, giving them scheduled sleeping breaks, Werner’s strategy was a little different.

“I didn’t want to be dictated when to sleep and decided to simply cycle from check point to check point and assess my condition as I go.

“I reached Loudeac (435km) at 20:30 on Monday 19 August, having been on the road for 25 hours. They had good sleeping facili-

ties at the control and having done that distance into the wind, I stopped there and slept for three hours. I left at midnight and headed for Brest. I made the turn in Brest at 10:00 on Tuesday and headed back along the same route. I again reached Loudeac (797km) at 20:00, now 48.5 hours on the road.

“I decided to apply the same strategy as I did on the previous stop, which would leave me with 435km to the finish line.

“I left Loudeac at midnight and I reached Paris on Thursday, 22 August at 01:20, completing the 1 236km with 12 536 metres of vertical accent, in a time of 78 hours and 11 minutes.”

He received a prestigious PBP finisher’s medal and his name will be entered into the event’s “Great Book” along with every other finisher going back to the very first PBP. Werner said a highlight of the race was the support of the residents of all 178 towns and villages they went through. “You could cycle through a little town at 02:00 and there would be entire families standing outside their homes offering water, coffee and something to eat. You would be in the countryside on a hot day far from civilisation and there would be a family serving cooldrink out of the boot of their car. And no matter where or when, everyone would always greet and shout words of encouragement.

“Cyclists would out of pure fatigue sleep in ATM kiosks, in bus stops or even fall asleep on the side of the road without fear for their safety.

“When they wake up, their bikes and belongings would still be there where they left them. Over the 1 200km, directional signage boards placed by organisers would not be moved, stolen or vandalised by locals. I realised there are still places in the world where time is not your enemy; human decency is the rule, not the exception; and the respect for man and his belongings is still held sacred.”

Werner, tired but satisfied at the end of Paris-Brest-Paris.

Werner, who only started cycling in 2013 at the age of 42, got his first taste of long distance races in 2015 with the TransKaroo over 242km in 2015. He tackled the 36One over 361km next.

To pre-quality for PBP, he had to complete a 600km race, which he did. “When the PBP pre-registration opened, I immediately entered. Now it was a matter of qualifying.

Qualification for the event started on 1 November 2018 and required pre-registrants to complete a 200; 300; 400 and 600km BRM before July 2019.

“By February this year I was qualified,” says Werner.

Werner is a member of the AudaxSA Club.

Audax is a cycling sport in which participants attempt to cycle long distances within a pre-defined time limit. It’s non-competitive and success in an event is measured by its completion. Standard distances are 200, 300, 400, 600 and 1 000 kms, which have to be ridden at an average speed between 15-30 km per hour. Control points are set up to help participants stay on course and maintain the average speed.

“Many people asked me what went through my mind while competing in PBP. At times I simply focused on and enjoyed what’s around me and how fortunate I was to be healthy enough to do this, while on other occasions I thought about what would be next in life and how I was going to achieve it.

“There came a point where I literally had to talk to myself to keep the sleep monsters at bay.”

He firmly believes one has to be at peace with your own thoughts. “You can’t be afraid to face those personal demons that rear their heads when you are at your weakest.”

According to him the events are 60% psychological and 40% physical.

“You can train your body to handle almost all the challenges you will face, but having never cycled beyond 600 km in one go, your mind will constantly question you on how are you going to handle that uncharted territory.

“You will have many ups and downs in a race like this, some downs lasting hours, others an entire day. That’s where a strong mind helps. You need to really want to do it. The desire to be successful must outweigh the fear of pain and fatigue. To me, pain is temporary, glory (or failure) is forever and my biggest fear, is one of regret.”

Holiday fun with Goldilocks The Lilliput Children’s Theatre Company will be performing one of its most popular shows to date, Goldilocks and the three bears, during the September school holidays.

he Italian Club of Cape Town (ICCT) will be living up to its name when it brings all things Italian to the club in Milnerton, come October.

ICCT will be having a Festa Italiana on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October.

Formed in the 1960s, ICCT has become a home away from home for Italians in Cape Town, and a second home for those locals that love all things Italian. Members of the club can enjoy various sports like soccer, archery, fencing and bocce (an Italian ball sport closely related to bowls) among many other sports.

At the recent launch of the festival, Italian consul Emanuele Pollio

promised nothing short of amazing.

“In Italian, festa means a party and I assure you, it will be more than a party. It will be an Italian lifestyle.

There will be great artists, fashion, crafts, cars and food. There will also be an exhibition of a great Italian genius, Leonardo da Vinci, who was described as a man who had a multifaceted contribution to human knowledge,” he said. Marketer Chris Casalena said the idea is to show Capetonians a little bit of Italy. “This is the first time we are doing this. We want to share Italian culture, food and lifestyle. We will be bringing various Italian chefs.

This is a family event, and everyone leaves here with a smile,” he said adding that ICCT is a generous club and they are welcoming everyone.

enknecht adds that visitors will love to be able to interact with the various exhibitors. “Many of our exhibitors are importers or local producers who will bring you only the best Italy has to offer. They’re passionate about their brands, and love to share it with others.”

Festival-goers can expect no shortage of heritage Italiana. Tickets will be available from Webtickets or at the door at a cost of R80 for adults and R55 for pensioners and learners aged 12 to 18. Children under 12 enter free.

La Récolte has launched the final phases of the development which will include blocks C and D. Block D will offer 42 independent living units on completion. These units will vary between 60m² and 96m².

Karate school celebrates karatekas: Francois du Plessis Goju-Kai Karate School recently celebrated 22 karatekas grading to their respective black belts this year during a grading ceremony. The event was attended by Peter Brandon Hanshi, Goju-Kai All Africa president. After 10 years of karate and a year of intensive training and preparation for their black belts, 11 travelled to Tokyo, Japan in July to grade at the Goju-Kai Hombu dojo, with the head of Goju-Kai International, Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi. All were successful, eight graded for their first black belt (shodan), one to her second (nidan) and two to their third (sandan) black belts. The remaining 11 karate successfully graded in August at the Hombu Dojo in Cape Town. Five graded to Shodan, four to Nidan and two to Yondan (fourth) black belt. Len Barnes Memorial Tournament this weekend: Shihan Hennie Bosman from the Welgemoed Kyokushin-kan dojo will host the Len Barnes Memorial Tournament (full contact karate) on Saturday 21 September at DF Malan High School. Close to 300 karateka from all the provinces and several African countries will battle it out for top honours. The tournament starts at 09:00 for the juniors and 15:00 for seniors. Van der Bank takes cycle title T

heuns van der Bank and Sharon Miller won the 78km men and women’s races respectively at the recent West Coast Express, hosted by the Outriders Cycle Club.

Over the years this race signals the start of the road race season.

History dictates that this time of year the famous South Easter is already blowing but not this time. The north-west wind gave riders a different challenge altogether.

Etnard Louw and Jack van Wyk were the first two cyclists to break out into the lead with their teams lining out the group on the R27 and very quickly built a two-minute gap by the start of the Mamre climb.

The crosswinds wreaked havoc on the group halving the group by the time they turned towards Atlantis. It was at this stage of the race that Van der Bank put in a massive attack solo off the group and reached the leading duo by the crest of the climb.

Just before exiting the Atlantis complex Van der Bank’s attack forced Etnard to chase and this proved to be too much as he led from the first 5km.

Behind the race heated up heading to the N7 with Robby Rodrigues animating the bunch by attacking and splitting the remain-

ing group with Rudie Kellerman and his remaining Team Hartlief lieutenants driving the pace up the N7, by the crest of the N7 the bunch was thinned out to around 25 riders.

The bunch strung out with the crosswinds and steamed back into Melkbosstrand with attacks being neutralised by the riders in the front of the group.

The group came home with Kellerman taking the sprint for third.

Durbell en UWK veg om plek Arnold Block word vereer SAREL BURGER Met Unie-Milnerton se uitskakeling deur Valsbaai die afgelope Saterdag in die kwarteindronde van die WP se Presidentbekerrugbykompetisie met 36-83 te klop, berus dit nou by Durbanville-Bellville of die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapand (UWK) om namens die Tygerbergstreek saam met die Maties en Ikeys na die kroon te reik.

Die kwarteindstryd tussen Durbell en UWK sou eers Maandagaand plaasvind nadat die UWK-ampsdraers uitstel gevra het as gevolg van Chester Williams se begrafnis.

Die uitslag was met druktyd nog nie beskikbaar nie. Die wenner van hierdie kragmeting kom komende Saterdag in die halfeindronde teen die Ikeys te staan, terwyl die Maties en Valsbaai mekaar in die ander halfeindstryd sal aandurf.

In afdeling B se kwarteindronde het Bellville met 37-23 met Vineyards klaargespeel

en sal nou in die halfeindronde teen Kuilsrivier te staan kom. In die ander halfeindstryd pak Hamlets en St. George mekaar.

In afdeling C het Scottsdene in die kwarteindronde vir Strand United met 51-27 gelooi en die Kraaie speel nou in die halfeindronde teen die Strand-klub, met Hands & Heart terselfdertyd teen Langa. ’n Regstelling: Ná verlede week in TygerBurger berig is dat Kuilsrivier en Hamlets (as die voorste twee spanne in die Superliga se B-afdeling) aanstaande seisoen na die A-afdeling sal opskuif, is verneem dat dit nie noodwendig die geval sal wees nie. Dit is inderdaad die twee beste spanne in die huidige Presidentbeker-kompetisie wat hierdie bevordering sal kry. Dit is ’n verandering van ’n vroeëre besluit. Die Superliga in die eerste deel van die seisoen dien met ander woorde nou net as ’n “uitdunningsproses” om die ses beste spanne in elke afdeling vir die Presidentbeker-kompetisie aan te wys.

SAREL BURGER Die Noordelikes-Goodwood-krieketklub se A-veld sal voortaan bekend staan as die Arnold Bloch Ovaal.

Die klub se uitvoerende bestuur het besluit om die veld, wat dikwels ook deur die WP Krieketunie (WPKU) vir interprovinsiale wedstryde benut word, na Bloch te vernoem ter erkenning vir sy jarelange diens aan die klub. ’n Amptelike aankondiging in hierdie verband is verlede week gedoen tydens ’n geselligheid by die klub, wat deur verskeie hooggeplaaste krieketampsdraers bygewoon is.

Bloch, ’n 72-jarige apteker in Parow, is al byna 60 jaar in een of ander hoedanigheid aan die klub verbonde – aanvanklik vanaf 1960 as ’n skolier-speler toe die klub

in Parow nog net as Noordelikes bekend was.

In die sewentigerjare was hy vir vyf jaar die klub se wedstrydsekretaris.

En toe Noordelikes in 1975 saamsmelt met die Goodwood-klub, was Bloch van meet af die voorsitter van die “nuwe” klub – ’n pos wat hy 20 jaar lank beklee het.

Nadat hy in 1990 tot die uitvoerende bestuur van die WPKU verkies is, het hy kort daarna ook erelidmaatskap van die Noordelikes-Goodwood-klub ontvang.

Die WPKU het ’n bloeitydperk beleef terwyl Bloch van 1999 tot 2004 nie net die president van die WP-unie was nie, maar ook ’n lid van die SA Krieketraad se uitvoerende bestuur.

In 2006 is lewenslange erelidmaatskap deur die WPKU aan hom toegeken.
