Help locate lost parrot A Bothasig resident is searching for her lost pet parrot, Ash, who went missing on Thursday 7 January. The African grey is a free flight trained bird and it will respond to people, and should also land on a hand or shoulder when called, owner Lisa Cooper, says. “Please call if seen. He responds to ‘good job’ when being called,” says the owner. Ash accidentally escaped out of a travel box, Cooper says. Anyone with information can call 082 681 8086 or 082 789 1380. BELVEDERE: STRAATBEWONERS TEISTER INWONERS
“Ons lewe in vrees” RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
I
Alles gebeur hier.

Firefighters rescue pup A puppy from Ruyterwacht got a second chance at life after the City’s fire and rescue service rescued the pup from a sewer line in Ruyterwacht. The firefighters were called out on Sunday 10 January. A statement reads that the family heard the puppy’s distant cries from their toilet, and quickly called for help when they realised a member of their neighbour’s litter was missing. The firefighters called for assistance from another department and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). “Help was going to take time and by then, shifts had changed. The fire crews from Epping 3 and Goodwood 3 platoon took it upon themselves to rescue the puppy as they did not know how long he’d been stuck there,” said Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith.
He added that the puppy was extricated from the sewerage line at 11:15 and handed over to the SPCA to ensure he was in good health. On Wednesday 13 January both crews returned to the property and Goodwood fire station commander, Durandt Geldenhuys bought the materials needed to fix the line they’d damaged when they took the puppy out. “Our firefighters are once again commended for their dedication to not only going above and beyond the call of duty, but to saving lives. On occasion, those lives are the furry, four-legged variety, and this is a testament to their commitment,” said Smith.

Mosaic to help victims of domestic abuse Mosaic Training, Service and Healing Centre is expanding its Access to Justice services to domestic violence survivors by extending its operating days from three days a week to five days a week in five courts in the Western Cape. The community-based, non-profit organisation works to prevent, reduce and respond to abuse and domestic violence by providing holistic, integrated services to heal and empower women through support services, access to justice and skills training. It also offers courts support services to survivors of domestic violence in Cape Town, Cape Winelands, Pretoria and Durban. More than 12 000 survivors of domestic violence benefit from the service each year. “We acknowledge the challenges that exist in survivors of domestic violence accessing justice, in response, our court support services, which fall under the Access to Justice pillar of Mosaic’s service model, provide survivors with crisis counselling,
safety planning, referral to services in addition to assisting with the completion of protection order application forms, and the provision of court information,” says Nandipha Ganya, programmes manager of Mosaic. In recent years, due to a lack of funding support for this service, Mosaic was forced to reduce the number of days these services could be offered to survivors to only three days a week. But now, in partnership with the provincial social development department, six courts have Mosaic court support social auxiliary workers on site five days a week. “We are excited to be extending our operating days from three days a week to five days a week in six courts in the Western Cape. We hope to achieve this in all of the courts served in 2021,” says Ganya. The court support programme forms part of the Mosaic safe model, a community response and prevention model. The Safe Model sees a multisectoral local community-based co-created response
to domestic violence prevention and response. Ganya adds, “Domestic violence happens in homes and in communities. Our 27 years of offering support to survivors of domestic violence has shown that a local, co-created and community-owned response is what is needed to ensure that protection orders protect.” Mosaic court support services are offered in the following Western Cape magistrates courts: . five days a week in Bellville, Blue Downs, Cape Town, Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha and Wynberg, and . three days a week in Bishop Lavis, Philippi, Paarl and Wellington. If you, or someone you know, is a victim of domestic violence or gender-based violence, call Mosaic on 021 761 7585, send a message on Facebook (@MosaicNGO) or on Instagram (@MosaicRSA) for assistance. If you need more information, visit www.mosaic.org.za.

The City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management James Vos has appealed to government to consider extending the current curfew of 21:00 to 23:00. In a statement, he explained that he has written to cooperative governance and traditional affairs minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. “I have been inundated with calls and correspondence from desperate businesses in hospitality, manufacturing, retail and SMMEs across the business value chain, including the Cape Chamber of Commerce and the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (Fedhasa), who, after just managing to survive the first round of lockdowns, are now facing closure due to
having to close their doors at 20:00. “Losing trading hours every night has pushed many businesses to the brink, with many not being able to retain customers, pay bills, or keep staff employed. Our local economy relies on the food and beverage, manufacturing, hospitality and retail sectors, including service providers, for jobs and economic activity. We know that, according to the latest information from Statistics South Africa, the tourism sector added R18.1 billion to our economy and supported just over 113 000 jobs in 2018.” He added, “While the full extent of the various lockdowns on business closures and job losses is yet to be established, thousands of businesses and jobs have potentially been
lost or are at risk.” Vos said these businesses need every hour to keep their doors open, retain and create jobs. “I do not make this request for a curfew extension lightly but this is a bid to save what is left of the hospitality sector. “I am reassured and do so on the basis of the extensive health and safety protocols implemented by this industry, which I have seen first-hand through my many visits. I am confident that by extending the curfew by just two hours to 23:00, on the strict condition of the implementation of the necessary health and safety measures, we will be able to give these sectors the lifeline they so desperately need to stay viable and save jobs.”

A large group of Cape cormorant chicks has been placed in the care of Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) after they were rescued from Robben Island. It is believed that more than a thousand chicks were abandoned by their parents. On Tuesday 12 January, at around 11:00, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Table Bay duty crew were activated at the request of Sanccob to assist in an ongoing operation to rescue the chicks on the island. According to Sanccob their rangers on the island had been monitoring the situation and with the chick’s parents having not returned, for unknown reasons, the decision was taken to intervene. Additional Sanccob rangers and Two Oceans Aquarium staff were dispatched to join their colleagues and Robben Island Museum staff and they gathered chicks into
boxes to be brought to Sanccob for care and protection. In a statement, Sanccob says, “Hundreds of Cape cormorant chicks rescued from Robben Island are currently being admitted to our Cape Town facility in Table View. “A robust rescue effort with Robben Island Museum, Two Oceans Aquarium and the NSRI was executed to retrieve the abandoned chicks and transport them to our care.” The statement further reads, “Each chick is being assessed and hydrated on admission and our team of staff, interns and volunteers are giving 110% to their care and accommodation.” NSRI Table Bay were requested to assist with transport of chicks from the island to mainland. According to Thabo Seshoka, head of heritage and research at the island, approxi-

Polisie gryp in by Sassa-chaos NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
D

Impact on education felt NETTALIE VILJOEN The provincial education department says the marking of 2020 matric exam papers is progressing well. Last year, the national Department of Basic Education (DBE) announced that the marking for the matric exams would be completed by Friday 22 January, with results out on Tuesday 23 February. “The DBE rescheduled the 2020 National Senior Certificate examinations to accommodate the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The June Senior Certificate (SC) examination was postponed and was written together with the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination in November 2020,” explains Millicent Merton, a spokesperson for the provincial education department. In August last year, the DBE reassured candidates that the late release of the results would not jeopardise their admission to higher education institutions. Last week, the University of Cape Town (UCT) confirmed that the later-than-usual release of matric results would not impact matrics’ possible acceptance to tertiary institutions. UCT explained that applications from prospective first-year students were considered on the basis of their Grade 11 final results and/or September/trial examination results. However, as South Africa finds itself in the midst of the second wave, the hope
shared by many that the new year would usher in a return to normal has faded quickly. This, says Peter Kriel, general manager at The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) – an accredited private higher education provider – has left many matrics without a clear idea of what this new year will hold. He says one of the most important things 2020 matrics can do in the new year, is to review their plans for the year and ensure they will be able to continue on their chosen path. “Use these coming weeks to make sure that your institution will be able to continue seamlessly in the event of, for instance, another hard lockdown. “Ask an institution about their readiness and ability to quickly adapt their offering to a hybrid or online model,” Kriel says. They should also speak to other students who had already experienced last year’s response. “You need to determine whether students last year were able to continue their learning journey seamlessly, whether they got the support they needed to do so effectively, and whether the learning was adapted in such a way that they continued to be engaged,” Kriel says. He adds that those matrics who have not yet decided on their plans for the year should consider approaching an institution to talk through their options rather than leaving it too late.

CT Jazz festival postponed With the Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc globally, Jazz lovers and supporters of the annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) will have to wait for more than a year before they get to see their favourite local and international acts on stage. Following last year’s cancellation due to the virus, this year’s instalment of the festival has also been called off due to the national lockdown. Event organisers espAfrika said in a statement the decision was not taken lightly, it was made in the best interest of festival-goers, sponsors and corporate clients. “This decision was accompanied by an optimistic view to host the festival once again in 2021. Sadly, we currently find ourselves in the midst of a dreaded second wave of Covid-19 infections, the impact of which, by all accounts, we will feel deep into 2021,” read the statement. It further reads, “The health and safety of everyone involved with the festival is of paramount importance. It is for this reason that we have decided to postpone the festival to 2022. We trust that our valued sponsors, corporate clients and festinos will stand with us in caution and solidarity to play our part in minimizing the spread of this virus.” Organisers thanked patrons for their patience and support during this “unprecedented time”. Billy Domingo, festival director, says while the road to CTIJF 2022 will be a long one, it will not be without the joy and nostalgia jazz music brings. He says they have been working hard behind the scenes to bring brand new series of online events and smaller live jazz experiences throughout 2021. “JazzFix will be formally launched early in the new year (2021). The online shows present footage of some of the festival’s greatest moments and shows exclusively performed at the festival over the past 20 years, which includes interviews with artists who performed.”

Skok oor lantern op tehuis se dak RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
’n

Container library supports local kids THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo With the 2021 academic year about to kick off, the Hot-Spot Container Library is raising stationery for underprivileged learners in Scottsville. The Back to School Supply Drive kicked off shortly after Christmas and is aimed at easing the financial burden for parents of about 500 kids who make use of the library services regularly. “Scottsville has been one of the many neighbourhoods in the city that have been hit hardest by the lockdown because many people lost their jobs,” Terence Crowster who started the library, says. The Hot-Spot Container Library was founded four years ago and is an initiative of the local non-government organisation, Restoration Youth Development Programme, which focuses on enhancing the learning and development of young children in the gang establishment. It is situated in Dahlia Street which has been considered a hotspot for gun violence for many years. Crowster says this was done deliberately to steer children away from crime. In addition to lending out books, the establishment also provides other services such as reading skills, homework as well as other programmes for the youth. Regardless of how the Covid-19 pandemic will affect the 2021 academic year, Crowster says the stationery will be of use to its recipients.

“If the department orders for online learning like last year, the learners will need stationery to prepare for their tasks. “High school, especially matriculants, will make regular use of them throughout the year.” He explains that enough stationery for at least 150 children has been raised, but cannot be distributed yet. “The call is for more stationery to be donated so that all kids can be given a pack. “Lacking material is often a blow to one’s confidence as they are easily bullied.” More mentorship programmes and workshops for unemployed youth will be
rolled out in the coming months and Crowster says the supplies will come in handy, thus running the drive throughout the year. The Hot-Spot Container Library continues to offer its services during the Covid-19 period and follows strict preventative processes. Donations can be dropped off at the library or an arrangement for a pick-up can be made. Donors can also make monetary donations. These categories include clothing brands, photographers, models, musicians and influencers, among others. “City Awards was founded in KwaZulu Natal back in 2017 with the first annual ‘035 Awards’ when locals noticed a lack of appreciation for the individuals in the entertainment industry,” marketing manager, Jonty Stander says. “After the response and vibe created amongst the local individuals, the company decided to branch out and do this in more cities.
“The company’s vision is to provide award shows that sustainably developes, empowers and elevates the entertainment industry,” Stander continues. In the bid to empower local entertainers, City Awards provide nominees with weekly industry tips they can use to grow and sustain their careers. “Nominated musicians can also take part in our live online performance and interview platform MiMusic, which is shared across all our online profiles.” Apart from the public votes, each stage of the competition will have a judging pan-
el made up of knowledgeable industry professionals related to the categories to score the nominees. The panel will remain anonymous to the public, as well as each other. Nominees are judged according to their social media profiles, details they have submitted, as well as their different category criteria. Apart from a trophy, the nominees stand to win a fully-paid music video and photoshoot and a marketing contract. Digital nomads can save City’s tourism sector DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
A
s remote working is becoming increasingly popular worldwide the City of Cape Town will be using this opportunity to bolster the city’s struggling hospitality industry. And this applies not only to digital nomads, but also locals who now indefinitely work from home. Imagine your workday starting under a shady tree with a cup of coffee and ending after lunch next to a sparkling pool, all with Covid-19 regulations tight in place. Cape Town recently made the list at number 47 for “Best cities for remote working” on the Big 7 Travel’s 50 Best Places for Remote Working in 2021. Big 7 Travel is a travel website, with an online community of 2.5 million people. This position, according to James Vos, Mayco member for economic opportunities the City of Cape Town, has been incorporated into the City’s enterprise and investment strategy to draw visitors to Cape Town to visit, live, work, study, play and invest. “Cape Town has long been a favourite with digital nomads, yet this is almost our best kept secret,” says Vos. Vos says the City’s tourism task team has already started engaging with the industry on this opportunity. “We started talks with the industry to get their buy-in on this concept. Establishments may offer what I call affordable ‘workation trips’ in order to attract locals from Cape Town and other provinces. It is a win-win situation,” he said in a telephonic interview. “Also, by means of destination marketing the City will target digital nomads in an international campaign when the time is right and when it is safe to do so. Covid-19 has changed the way we work, where work-

ing from home has become part of our everyday life. If there is one positive from this pandemic, the future of work will never be the same. This puts Cape Town in a prime position to cater to the changing needs of a global workforce. Given the challenging travel landscape created by the pandemic, we need to get smarter and innovate our hospitality sector by also focusing on remote workers so the sector can benefit from this growing remote work trend with Covid-19 protocols in place. “Some of the things that we encourage the hospitality sector to consider implementing, will be finding ways to attract Capetonians as well as others in our country, who usually work from home offices, to change their environment when it is safe to do so with Covid-19 protocols in place.” Vos explains that remote workers, local or international, could work in spaces where there is access to a day room with Wi-Fi, a pool, breakfast, lunch and parking. “For the long-stay digital nomads, the sector could consider revised rates and ‘home away from home’ type packaging. Such long stays can help to support local economies that have been decimated due to the impact of the pandemic,” he says. In addition, the exchange rate goes a long way towards making Cape Town an affordable luxury destination for international workers, without displacing local jobs for up to 90 days as permitted by immigration regulations. According to a statement issued by Vos, current visa free countries include some of our key source markets such as Germany, UK, France, the US and more. “Workers have realised that they can work from anywhere.
“D
“Sad, sad news. All our music venues are on the brink of closure. I wish you strength and hope you can hold out till this catastrophe ends,” het ’n ander gesê.

Nou is blues al ’n instelling by Die Boer. Vir eers bly Die Boer net so staan.

SLICE OF LIFE
Ek kon ure lank sit en luister hoe my oupa stories vertel oor vervloë dae. Oor ’n tyd toe goed wat ons vandag as vanselfsprekend aanvaar, slegs wensdenkery was. Of wetenskapfiksie. Bliksem! Dertig jaar gelede. Dié gewaarwording bring my tot die besef dat ek eersdaags my veertigste bestaansjaar op die aarde vier. Nóg ’n bliksem! Toe my pa dié ouderdom was, het ek gedink hy is bejaard. Hoe het 40 my dan so bekruip? Of bekruip die ouderdom maar ’n mens so onverwags? Die feit dat 40 my lê en loer, het my aan die dink gesit. As ’n mens kyk na die lewensverwagting van die gemiddelde Suid-Afrikaner beteken dit dat ek verby die helfte van my natuurlike lewe is. Die gemiddelde Suid-Afrikaner lewe net ’n bietjie langer as 63 jaar. Wanneer is dan my beurt? Henry Ford was 45 toe sy legendariese Ford Model T bekend gestel is. Gaan ek toelaat dat 40 my onderkry? Nooit! Alles wat ek tot nou toe geleer of deurgemaak het, het my voorberei vir die nuwe fase van my lewe. Miskien het my styl effens vasgehaak in my dertigs, of soos my kinders dink, in my twintigs. – Brenden Ruiter

Covid-19 warrior shares his survival story As we have entered the peak of the second wave of Covid-19, I would like to share my story with my fellow citizens. We must be honest and admit, whether we are in wave one or wave two of the pandemic – the virus is still here, it still infects people and it sadly still kills our family members and friends! I’m Patrick Franck and I am 49 years old. During the first wave of the pandemic, I developed a fever at work and grew progressively more tired. I was Covid positive during the first wave and I had passed it on to my wife as well. One morning I developed a cold sweat and my wife immediately arranged for an ambulance. They immediately arrived and put me on oxygen, and my oxygen saturation was only at 22. Normally it should be between 95-100 and I probably only had about an hour left to live. The paramedics stabilised me and then took me to New Somerset Hospital. I was immediately transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital who had high-flow oxygen machines in the high care ward. During my first week in hospital I was diagnosed with Covid-pneumonia. Not being able to get visitors was just as tough. By the end of my first week the doctors said there hadn’t been much improvement but there also hadn’t been any deterioration. I asked what I could do and one doctor said: “Just keep breathing.” The doctors had a Plan B to run a new set of blood tests, scheduled a chest X-ray and a CT scan. The virus affects both lungs and what had happened was my alveoli was working so
hard to fight the virus that they were negating their efforts, which is why I wasn’t getting any better. They adjusted my medication as my lungs started to heal. The virus is as much a mental as a physical challenge. The visits by psychiatry staff helped me tremendously to put things into perspective and channel my energies into getting better. Week three my improvement continued, and after 23 days, I was moved to a general ward. After a day in the general ward I was transferred to the Hospital of Hope at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). My oxygen was now more manageable, and I could talk and eat easier. I had chats and made friends with other Covid survivors. It made me realise that everyone’s journey with the virus is different. As they weaned me off the oxygen completely, I had physiotherapy to build up the strength in my legs again. After nine days it was time to say my goodbye to the CTICC staff after 33 days in hospital. I will be eternally indebted to the staff at Groote Schuur Hospital and the staff at CTICC. As the virus is still with us, I would like encourage residents to do everything they can to keep themselves and our healthcare workers safe so we can come through this wave safely. During the second wave, you can do simple acts like always wearing a mask when you leave your home, maintaining 1.5m from others, avoiding social gatherings, and staying home if you feel sick. Hul opdrag van selfaangestelde “Generaal Churchill” Cele is duidelik: “We’ll fight them on the beaches, we’ll fight them on the shores.” Bekamping van gewone misdaadjies soos korrupsie, moord, roof, verkragting, inbrake, ens. moet maar eers ’n bietjie wag. Thank you for taking care of me I am a Covid pneumonia survivor! My symptoms included high temperatures, shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of appetite – I lost more than 10kg in three weeks – and body aches. It all started on 22 December at work when I felt exhausted and suffered a high fever. I went to the doctor on the 23rd and she referred me for Covid testing. The results came back as negative on Christmas day, which I thought was a blessing. On day six my condition got worse with my temperature going as high as 39.4 °C. I also had a shortness of breath and a dry cough. With the bit of strength I had left in me I drove myself to Mitchell’s Plain District Hospital and upon arrival I was immediately put on oxygen. They also checked my vitals and took X-rays. The doctor referred me for another Covid test as my X-rays confirmed possible Covid pneumonia. I was sent home with medication the next morning as my vitals were satisfactory and oxygen level above 90. On day eight my fever, tight
chest, cold sweats and shallow breathing persisted. I could hardly move and was confused. My second test came back as positive on New Years Day! For the next three days I could cope with the shortness of breath and coughing until the evening of 4 January. I was then admitted to Mitchell’s Plain District Hospital with high level Covid pneumonia. I was placed on highflow oxygen as my blood oxygen level was as low as 76. My blood pressure was low and I was very dazed. On 5 January I was transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital and placed on highflow oxygen for a few days and slowly weaned of it until I was able to breathe on my own and eventually discharged on the 10th. The doctors and nurses took great care of me considering the amount of pressure and strain they are all under. I truly cannot thank them all enough because if I wasn’t admitted to hospital, I would have died at home. I want to first of all thank you and praise my Father in heaven for his healing touch and having mercy on me. Rowena, my partner, rock, and love of my life, for standing by my side and nursing, comforting and caring for me every step of the way. Sister Berenise Peterson of ward G25 at Groote Schuur Hospital and all her doctors and assistants for taking great care of me. Ek sal julle ewig dankbaar wees! My family and friends for the prayers and everybody that interceded my mother (God bless you mommy) and all prayer groups. I’m at day 21 now at home with my family, oxygen levels are up and vitals okay. I self-medicate at home and rest as my body will need time to “reset”. MYRON DU PLOOY Email

Squirrel kittens in need of rescue DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
S
quirrel mating season has started and already volunteers at the Squirrel Rescue and Rehab Western Cape have their hands full with squirrel babies needing to be rescued, raised and rehabilitated back into their habitat. Squirrel babies, called kits or kittens, come to the group in various ways – from tree fellers to farm workers, school children and Facebook users. “We just got in our first little kit for the season, picked up in Houtbay and taken to a volunteer in Fishhoek,” says codirector Lize Testa from Brackenfell. “The majority of the group’s rescuers are in the Western Cape, but that doesn’t prevent squirrel lovers all over the world from asking for guidance. The group has assisted rescuers of other types of squirrels all over South Africa and even as far as Botswana and Sri Lanka. This includes: cash donations, milk (Royal Canin Puppy Milk), pet carriers and cages, large cages or aviaries, welded mesh for cages that needs to be fixed, fleece blankets and raw nuts. What to do when you find a squirrel Squirrel kits are often found bleeding with open wounds or broken bones, having been in a cat or dog’s mouth. Sometimes they are covered with maggots or are cold, wet and crying non-stop. “Put the baby in an area with low noise level, inside a dark box or container with air holes. Be sure to add a fleecy blanket for warmth. Do not offer the kit any food or water but immediately WhatsApp 082 960 4859, with a photo of the baby and your location to be put in contact with your closest rehabilitator. If the squirrel has a fluffed-out tail, like a bottle brush, and a body longer than 15 cm, excluding the tail, and approaches humans or pets, it is likely a juvenile squirrel. In such cases you do not need to intervene as even at the young age of 10 to 12 weeks, the squirrel is independent. “If the squirrel is approaching humans or pets, try to scare it by making loud noises when it comes near.
If you find an unharmed infant squirrel, you need to guide the healthy baby back to its mother. This can be done by placing the baby in an open container, with uncooked rice or bird seed wrapped in a sock and warmed in the microwave. “Wrap the sock in a soft towel and place it next to the baby. Remember, do not give the baby any food or water. “You can also return the squirrel to its nesting tree. This should be a tree in the immediate area where the squirrel was found. If you don’t know which tree the squirrel’s nest is in, or if the nest was destroyed, then choose a tree closest to where the squirrel was found. Squirrel nests can either be in tree cavities, or in ‘dreys’ - the big balls of dried leaves at the tops of trees.” If the baby’s eyes are open, you can place the baby on the tree trunk to encourage it to climb. If it does not climb, place the squirrel in the container and attach the open container to the tree. If the baby’s eyes are closed, attach the open container to the tree. “It is important to keep children, dogs, and cats out of the area, while observing the baby squirrel for the next six to eight hours of daylight to check that the mother has returned to retrieve her baby. Reheat the rice/birdseed bag every two hours.” If not, call 082 960 4859 to locate your closest rehabilitator. ‘Happiness lies in following your dreams’ THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo
On stage, dance extraordinaire Lee Kotze is known by his drag character, Mcenzlee Kash.
Living his life as a dancer, Kraaifontein’s dance extraordinaire, Lee Kotze, says the only way youth can truly be happy is if they follow their dreams and chase after their goals. Keeping this in mind, he has come to achieve what most dancers his age would think is impossible to achieve. “Before trying to please others start by doing what makes you happy. The rest will follow,” he says. From the moment he put his dancing shoes on for the first time as a 17-year-old Kotze has performed on many national and international stages and added modelling and fashion design to his profile as well. Recently he and three of his friends he met in Germany where he currently works as a drag artist on a cruise ship, performed in a show they created themselves. Excitement would be too much of an understating word to describe the feeling he has for the show. “Last year was a very difficult time for everyone especially artists of who many had lost their income when productions had to be halted because of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he says. “When production of the shows we were busy with was stopped, as well as the cruise ship I was on, I could not travel home because the travel restrictions were too strict, so I needed to do things.” This was when he teamed up with three
of his Acrobat-artist friends and worked on the project dubbed The Dream Show. “The shows our company usually create are entertaining and often do not have a deeper meaning to them. So we wanted to tell a story and have people get in touch with their emotions,” he explains. With this objective in mind the production was centred around following one’s dreams and aspirations. A part of the show focused on the longing for a perfect relationship while another was of a homeless man who just wanted to be a recognised artist. His role in the play was that of a successful

gay businessman who also really wants to be a famous drag queen. “With the different characters who all have different dreams and aspirations, we wanted the audience to realise the importance of following our hearts desires because that is what humans really need to fully be happy.” When he is not entertaining on stages of the world, the dancer-turned-model dresses up in designer garments and poses for cameras. “I enjoy being able to dress up and become someone else for a while. When it is all over I take it all off and carry on with my life.” Like dancing, modelling has exposed him to many places in the world and different cultures. “Interacting with other models from all over the world and learning their ways has been interesting. So far it has given me a new perspective on life.” Although 2020 was a tough year, the drag entertainer recently flew to the Ukraine for a fashion shoot and was featured in a spread for Nataal magazine, an international art and fashion magazine, and was also featured in Riding with Sugar, a local drama film which is currently available for streaming on Netflix. “But all of this did not come easy, a lot of sacrifices had to be made and I had to keep my eye on the ball and focus on the end goal.” Some of his future plans include being an influential member of the LGBTQ+ community before settling down in Europe. But before that all, the world’s a stage.

Kuils River to host disabled golf A
fter a year-long suspension due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the South African Disabled Golf Association (Sadga) provincial days are set to resume in February. The last time provincial days were held was in March of last year, a few weeks prior to the national lockdown. Once golf resumed after the lockdown, the Sadga board of directors felt that staging provincial days could compromise the health and safety of everyone involved. “Instead, virtual provincial days took
place in the first week of every month, which afforded our golfers a seven-day period in which to submit a score towards the virtual order of merit. “This innovative concept was met with great enthusiasm from our members – many of whom made concerted efforts to participate each and every month. “Nevertheless, the long-term goal was always to resume provincial days that would be staged at one golf course on a given Sunday in the month,” says Sadga executive director Craig Moorgas.
“While the resumption is an exciting prospect, the safety of the Sadga golfers and staff remained paramount. We are thrilled to be resuming our provincial days and it will be fantastic to once again enjoy the camaraderie for which these occasions are renowned,” says Moorgas. “Having said that, we will be implementing a number of measures to ensure the safety of everyone involved. At each and every provincial day our golfers and organisers will adhere to the Golf RSA Covid-19 safety protocols in place at the various golf clubs.
Moreover, golfers will be required to pay their green fees via EFT and there won’t be any prize-givings held. Instead, all players will hand in their scorecards and the winners will be announced the following day.” The provincial days will also be an opportunity to earn points towards the Race To The Challenge Cup. The first provincial day will take place on Sunday 14 February at Country Club Johannesburg while Kuils River plays host to the Western Cape-based golfers on the same day. V For more information visit www.sadga.co.za.
Friendship golf day a success
The Friendship Golf Cup was held at Malmesbury Golf Club on Tuesday 29 December last year. The annual event has been running for the last 25 years between Christmas and New Year. Initially, it was held at Ceres Golf Club, but was moved to Malmesbury Golf Club five years ago. The winners on the day were father Duncan Darlington and son-in-law Willem Frylinck, on 45 points. A special thanks again to Malmesbury Golf Club, Danie de Villiers and David Isles. Here are winners Duncan (left) and Willem receiving the trophy from the legendary Bruce Taylor.
Here Bruce Taylor (left) helps Peter Johnson (centre) hand over the lucky draw prize to Danie de Villiers (right).

FUNDRAISING: SCHOOL CHANGES PLANS
Cycle Tour cancelled F
ollowing the lockdown announcement on 11 January, the organisers and sponsors of the Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour have confirmed the cancellation of the 2021 event. The very popular Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour was scheduled to take place on Saturday 13 February from the Durbanville Racecourse. The Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour is El Shaddai Christian School’s main fundraising event and organised by the school with the support of parents and learners. Well supported, the event is also a charitable event, which contributes to non-profit organisations in and around the Durbanville community. “The decision was made after careful con-
sideration of the current number of Covid-19 cases in the Western Cape and the restrictions on events and sporting activities during Level 3,” says Morné Vorster, chair of the organising committee. “We look forward to the time when sporting activities can take place safely again and urge all our loyal cyclists to stay safe at this time. “We also extend our condolences to those who have lost a family member, a relative, close friend or an acquaintance during the pandemic,” he says. The Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour is the third largest event on the Western Cape annual cycling calendar and will return to its usual slot of the second Saturday of February in 2022.
90 years young and still kicking Ouma Joan van der Merwe will celebrate her 90th birthday today (Wednesday 20 January) by putting on her Karate gi and doing the morning class at Welgemoed Kyokushinkan dojo. She started training at the age of 70 after a farm attack and just never looked back. She received her black belt on her 80th birthday and her Second Dan at 86. According to her instructor Hennie Bosman, she has shrugged off injuries and illnesses and is a real example to all. “We want to wish her many years of good health and training,” he says.
So byvoorbeeld was die WP Krieketunie
Local surfing stalwart mourned The local surfing fraternity is mourning the loss of pioneer Gary Grant, who passed away last week, as announced by the World Surf League (WSL) Africa. The local branch of WSL conveyed their condolences after confirming Grant’s passing in Cape Town on Thursday, 7 January in Cape Town. He was fundamental in the formation of the City Surf Series, a handful of Qualifying Series (QS) events that have been held annually for the last five years along the South African coastline. This series helped launch the professional careers of local surfers like Michael February and Matthew McGillivray. “It came as a shock to hear this unfortunate news and the surfing fraternity and WSL Africa were especially saddened by his passing,” said Colin Fitch, WSL Africa regional manager. “Accelerate Sport and Grant have been on the front line of the development of pro-
fessional surfing over the last six years. He will leave very big shoes to fill. Our sincere condolences to his wife, Debbie, his family and the entire team at Accelerate Sport. “On behalf of WSL International I offer my sincere condolences to Gary’s family and loved ones. He was instrumental in bringing stability to the WSL Africa region, through the creation of the City Surf Series. “He provided an opportunity for all those up and coming surfers with aspirations of making it on to the world tour. For this we are extremely grateful,” said Graham Stapelberg, WSL EVP/GM Tours and events. Fitch added that the WSL Africa team together with Accelerate Sport will continue to build on the strong foundation laid by Grant. “We wish our sincerest condolences to his family and friends in this difficult time,” concluded Fitch.
