T

he issue of the removal of street children presents a challenge, because many of the children will return to the street if they are released from the system – sometimes through their own choice and sometimes at the behest of their family or other

adults – the Western Cape department of social development says.

The department is, therefore, trying to implement longer-term programmes for care and rehabilitation of such children, minister of social development Sharna Fernandez told TygerBurger last week.

Recently Monte Vista residents expressed their dissatisfaction at the behaviour of a group of street

children after they allegedly abandoned a full loaf of bread next to a busy road, donated to them by a kind Samaritan.

News of this was posted on the Monte Vista ratepayers association Facebook page by a passing motorist.

The post attracted a significant amount of reaction – a total of 32 comments followed.

“Stop giving anything to them! I am sorry, but the more people give them stuff, the more show up,” a part of one message left in the string of comments, read.

“One person responded saying the group of children want money for drugs, or booze and that food is not a priority.

“Children living or begging on the street, are defined in the Chil-

dren’s Act as children in need of care and protection, and, therefore, have the same right to receive the necessary social work and children’s court services and legal protection as any other child in need of care and protection.

“However, many of the street children we work with also have more specialised needs.

o formal investigation was instituted into the City of Cape Town’s electricity tariffs, according to Cape Town mayor Dan Plato.

In a statement on Tuesday 20 August, Plato refuted media reports that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) Nersa had started an investigation into the City’s “Nersa-approved” electricity tariffs making it out as “fake news”.

TygerBurger reported last week that Nersa confirmed an investigation is underway following a formal complaint lodged by the public lobby group Stop COCT on behalf of its 13 200 members (“City electricity tariffs investigated by Nersa”, 21 August).

“Nersa has received quite a number of complaints from the City of Cape Town customers and yes, Nersa is looking into the matter ... you will be advised accordingly after Nersa has concluded the vigorous engagement and investigation on these issues,” Nersa spokesperson Vuyelwa Poswa wrote in an email to TygerBurger on Monday 19 August.

In its complaint Stop COCT, challenged the increase of the electricity levy to R163.50, as Dan Plato well as the new tariffs increase of 8.8%, that came into effect on 1 July. The lobby group believes the actual rand and cent value of this increase, is much higher than what Nersa recommended. Stop COCT also questioned whether the City took into account the effect of the new general valuation of properties.

Plato’s official response on the matter was however omitted from the article.

‘Misinformation’ Plato says complaints have been received about the tariff, which is to be expected, but there is no formal investigation into the City’s tariff structure.

“Nersa approved the tariffs. The public is encouraged to question the motives behind some lobby groups who continue to criticise the City and to misinform the public with fake news instead of sharing the facts that are made available in good faith. Civil society is an incredibly important sphere for en-

gagement and to hold government to account. It is more effective when the engagements are based on constructive input,” he added.

He says, the City’s 2019/20 tariff increases, approved at council, have been kept as low as possible at 8,88% compared to the 15,6% increase implemented by Eskom.

“Electricity prices are influenced by the fact that 65% of the tariff goes towards buying bulk electricity from Eskom.

Plato says the City compares well to other metros with costs being lower in many instances. “Tariff information is available for all to see and the setting of tariffs is a process that is based on public participation. Importantly, there is still scope for reducing costs by reducing household consumption or being energy efficient.

“The City has also made considerable provision for vulnerable households and the elderly through the provision of rates rebates and indigent relief for thousands of residents who are in need of assistance.”

The spokesperson reiterated Nersa will look into individual complaints it received as per a matter of course and due process but there is no investigation into the tariff structure. “It is similar to the City receiving a complaint from the public. To follow due process, we must look into complaints received on any matter pertaining to the municipality. A formal review would follow a different process and could include other government or regulatory agencies, however, this is not the case.”

The spokesperson added Nersa confirmed in correspondence to the City that it is not a formal investigation. “They responded saying they will look into the individual complaints from customers.”

We have, therefore, also designated specific social work teams in areas where there are high numbers of street children to focus on assisting them, and developed a standard operating procedure particularly for the central city, to help guide the various stakeholders on how to manage individual cases,” Fernandez says.

Many of the children will initially need secure care in terms of the Children’s Act, at least for a period, before a less restrictive form of alternative care can be provided, Fernandez adds.

Patrick Solomons, director of the non-profit organisation Molo Songololo, told TygerBurger the work they do with children indicates that there are a combination of factors that leads to children ending up homeless and living on the streets.

These include poverty, a lack of income, low wages and exploitation, unemployment, absent fathers, a lack of childcare and protection services, a lack of school or learner support services, dysfunctional families and communities, substance abuse, domestic violence and child abuse. “Children usually leave their homes because of exposure to and being victims of abusive behaviour by parents and care-givers,” Solomons explains. He says reducing poverty by creating sustainable jobs can help to reduce children from becoming homeless.

The department social development does not remove children from homeless families, unless they are in danger or at risk, a spokesperson says.

F

irst there was Big Brother South Africa, then came Big Brother Africa and now there is Big Brother Cape Town – the concept thought out by Parow resident, Phumelela Mantwana.

Unlike the other versions of this competition, this one will take place over a weekend and at a location set in Durbanville, the organiser of the Cape Town Big Brother House Experience, told TygerBurger.

“I have always been a big fan of the Big Brother house. I found it interesting to have different characters in a house for a certain amount of time.

“It was also interesting to me how those characters came together as different people, and had so much to relate,” Phumelela explains.

Phumelela’s Big Brother house experience takes place from Friday 13 September to Sunday 15 September. Interested individuals are already signing up for the experience, she says.

“I saw a gap in Cape Town where people love to interact and love to network, but do not always have the platforms to do so.”

Phumelela, who says she is passionate about organising events and getting people together, is currently working solo on the

‘Grab a wish’ for centre In support of their “Happy Ears Make Happy Children” campaign, Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s BTech students invites the public to support their Grab a Wish awareness drive – an initiative aimed at bringing the Carel du Toit Centre’s desired wishlist come to life.

The drive, where shoppers at Checkers in Canal Walk Shopping Centre may donate any form of stationery, educational toys and non-perishable foods, runs until the end of the month.

The Carel du Toit Centre is a non-profit organisation in Parow and helps children who struggle with hearing impairment, how to speak.

The centre cares for and teaches 125 learners. “Without the valuable contributions from the public and government, the centre would not be able to ensure that children with hearing impairments receive the suitable technological intervention needed such as cochlear implants.

“Listening experiences and natural interaction create an intensive speech-development environment, which strengthens a child’s linguistic competence. This process continues throughout the school years, laying a solid foundation for life,” Toni Erasmus, spokesperson says.

Self-defence: Learn how to save your life A

Learners win big: Parow West Primary School learners, Caleb Young and Molly Peter, each won grand prizes recently during the school’s annual fundraising competition. The competition also saw 40 other learners win spot prizes. The competition stretched from May until August.

mere basic knowledge of self-defence techniques can save your life in the event of a life threatening situation.

So says Francois du Plessis, acclaimed local karateka, who’ll once again be joining hands with TygerBurger for this year’s self-defence morning for women.

The previous sessions have been so popular that TygerBurger has decided to make this a yearly event, with the assistance of Francois du Plessis Karate School and sponsors such as Bassett Alarms.

“What puzzles me is that despite the violent society we live in, very few people make the effort to learn how to secure themselves,” says Francois.

On Saturday 12 October, women are invited to attend the TygerBurger Self-defence Morning and learn more about defending themselves against an attacker.

“I’ll teach the women simple yet practical

techniques in a reality-based training scenario,” says Francois.

Women who attended last year’s event said they realised how important body language was and how paramount it was to be aware of one’s surroundings – while driving, while walking to the car and when getting home.

“Francois and his team showed us where a person’s weak spots are. If you hit the target, you would be able to ward off an attacker,” said Mariétha Burger, who attended last year.

The event will be held at Durbanville High School’s gymnasium from 09:00 to 11:00.

Crime stats released in September DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke The public is eagerly awaiting the release of this year’s crime statistics by police minister Bheki Cele.

According to the police ministry, the crime stats for 2018/2019 will be released in September as part of the tabling of the annual report from the ministry.

The community policing board for the Tygerberg cluster is hopeful for a decline in crime this year.

The board, oversees seven police stations in the region, which include Brackenfell, Durbanville, Kraaifontein, Goodwood, Parow, Bellville and Bothasig.

“According to the provincial community safety department, the Tygerberg cluster was one of the top-performing clusters in the province for statistics provided for 2018/2019,” says chairman of the cluster board, Sean McCleland. “This is done according to the extended partnership programme, which serves as an oversight tool for the community policing forum (CPF). This translated into a better performing cluster this year, as in years before.”

McCleland adds that a decline in crime, would also be a result of the hard work done by the various CPFs and neighbourhood watches in the region.

“These community safety structures are doing the groundwork to ensure safety in their communities. We are hopeful for a decline in violent crimes at certain stations, but will keep an eye out for the property-related crimes, as this is the biggest concern in our region,” he says.

He says the Tygerberg cluster board is very grateful for the good partnership with the majority of the stations in the region. “We are very proud of what these police stations achieved in the last year.”

Lede van die sakekamer is meestal vanuit Brackenfell, Bellville, Plattekloof, Kuilsrivier, Goodwood en Parow afkomstig.

Aan die woord was die bekende kankerchirurg, dr. Ettienne Myburgh.

“Kanker verander jou lewe. Dit laat jou dink oor die verhoudings in jou lewe en bring nuwe insig,” sê Myburgh oor dié gevreesde siekte.

Volgens hom is die mees algemene kanker onder vroue vandag borskanker. “Een uit agt vroue sal in hul leeftyd gediagnoseer word met borskanker – ’n syfer wat baie hoër is as 20 jaar gelede,” sê hy.

Kanker word veroorsaak wanneer selle in

jou liggaam se weefsel begin vermenigvuldig weens gifstowwe wat ingeneem word.

“Die weefsel word meer en soos dit groter word, infiltreer dit die res van jou liggaam en saai kankersade op ander plekke,” verduidelik hy.

Daarom gaan chirurgie alleen nie die kanker gesond maak nie. “Dit help nie om net die knop uit te sny nie,” sê hy.

Myburgh is dit eens dat sigarette en alkohol twee van die grootste oorsake van kanker is. Onbeskermde seks is ook ’n oorsaak van sowat 22% van kankers wat deur virale infeksies oorgedra kan word.”

Myburgh vertel dat kanker onder vroue meer algemeen is na die aanvang van die twee wêreldoorloë.

“Vrouens se lewenstyl het verander. Met al die mans weg vir die oorlog, moes vroue in fabrieke begin werk – selfs in fabrieke wat bomme vir die oorlog gebou het.”

Dit, volgens hom, het baie negatiewe gevolge ingehou vir die gesondheid van vroue in die fabrieke. “Na die oorlog, waarin miljoene

mans gesterf het, het die tabakindustrie sy bemarking op vroue begin fokus.”

Dié aggressiewe bemarking, sê hy, het die boodskap gestuur dat dit lekker is om te rook. “Daar is nie ’n enkele ding in ’n sigaret wat goed is vir jou nie. Dit bevat gifstowwe wat kanker veroorsaak. Sigarette is ’n ‘reeksmoordenaar’,” sê hy.

Volgens ’n opname in Brittanje sal sowat 116 vroue wat glad nie drink nie, in hul leeftyd met kanker diagnoseer word.

Sowat 112 vroue wat drie eenhede alkohol per dag drink, sal in hul leeftyd met kanker diagnoseer word.

Senior ‘boemelaars’ het vet pret gehad AVRIL FILLIES

ejaardes het elke dag te doen met die soet en suur van die lewe en dit is ook nie anders by die Tygerbergdienssentrum in Parow nie. ’n Boemelaarsdag is Dinsdag 13 Augustus gehou vir die bejaardes van die sentrum.

Die bejaardes is van Bellville, Parow, Belhar, Elsiesrivier en Kraaifontein. Hulle kom elke Dinsdag by die dienssentrum in Weimarstraat bymekaar.

Almal het die boemelaarsdag geniet, maar daar is ook ’n dag later afskeid geneem van hul oudste maatjie.

“Thea Koch (101) is oorlede en ’n gedenkdiens is op Woensdag 14 Augustus vir haar gehou. Vir ons almal was dit hartseer om van die statige, talentvolle en omgeevriendin afskeid te neem.

“Sy was 30 jaar lank lid van die sentrum en was nog tot verlede jaar aktief betrokke met handwerk en basaarverkope,” het Linda Louw, alom bekend as tannie Linda, bemarkingsbestuurder van Meals on Wheels, gesê.

Volgens Linda het Koch ’n waardevolle en sinvolle lewe gehad en was die dienssentrum vir haar ’n tweede huis.

“Die dienssentrum het haar in staat gestel om haar talente te kon uitleef en sy het haar kennis gedeel met al die ander bejaardes wat Dinsdae kom kuier het,” het Linda gesê.

Die boemelaarsdag het vir baie pret gesorg, want die bejaardes kon soos boemelaars loop, aantrek, praat en eet.

“Kyk, ons weet nie regtig hoe boemelaars se handel en wandel elke dag is nie, maar ons het almal pret gehad. Ek het nie geweet ons het ook goeie akteurs onder die seniors nie.

“Die bestuur was verras oor hoe oorspronklik die seniors die boemelaars uitgebeeld het, én ook die feit dat almal spontaan deelgeneem het. Almal was bereid om vir die een dag net pret te hê en hul ander tydgenote te vermaak,” het Linda gesê.

Die oggend was daar ’n geskarrel by die dienssentrum om al die kledingstukke weg te steek sodat die ander nie moet sien wat jy gaan dra of jou geheim aan ander verklap nie.

“Dié dag sal nooit vergeet word nie. Dit is die dag wat ons sekretaresse (Lenie Virgin) en ander seniors bergies uitgebeeld het soos hulle die bergies sien.

“Met al die opgewondenheid wat daar geheers het, het ons selfs gesukkel om die seniors stil te kry vir die oggenddiens.

“Die woord amen was ook skaars geuiter of daar is geskarrel om aangetrek te kom en jouself voor te stel aan die res,” het Anne-Marie Watt, sentrumbestuurder, gesê.

“Terwyl ’n paar bergies ‘all dressed up with trolley and all’ die groep vermaak het, het ek Virgin aangeraai om by die voordeur van die sentrum in te kom en net haar ‘lyf rond te gooi’ en ’n ‘bottel leeg te drink’.

“Sy het nie op haar laat wag nie en toe die voordeurklokkie lui, was ek toevallig daar toe die ‘bergie’ die vertrek binne gestrompel

het. Die ander seniors het met my geraas omdat ek die deur oopgemaak het sonder om te kyk wie dit is. Die seniors was geskok om te sien daar’s ’n vreemdeling in hul midde, maar sommige was reg om kos te gee aan die behoeftige op die drumpel.

“Tot groot vermaak van die ander seniors het hulle die ‘bergie’ herken aan haar stem toe sy baie nader aan hulle was en sy begin praat het.

“Virgin se man het ná hierdie episode voorgestel dat sy haar so goed van haar taak gekwyt het, dat sy maar netsowel by die haweloses kan gaan bly,” het Watt geskerts.

Corrie Swart, wat ook deelgeneem het, het gesê dat sy nooit in haar wildste drome gedroom het dat sy ooit so iets sou doen nie, en dat sy soveel liefde en hartlikheid hier ontvang word en dat dit soos een groot familie voel. Sy voeg by dat haar kakebeen moeg was van al die lag.

Marie Muller, ’n senior wat onlangs by hulle aangesluit het omdat sy alleen gevoel het, se lewe het sedertdien handomkeer verander en sy het selfs deelgeneem aan die pret.

Haar familie en vriende kan nie glo die verandering wat in haar lewe plaasgevind het nie.

“Indien u ouers, bure, vriende of kennisse bo 60 eensaam is, bring hulle na ons toe.

“Jy sal dadelik die veranderinge sien plaasvind wanneer hulle met mense van hul eie ouderdom in aanraking kom,” het sy gesê.

Social media not all it’s cracked up Social media and I have never been the best of friends.

I never really understood the hype around it. In my opinion, it really does more harm than good.

Sure, it helps you connect with people far away, a great platform to market and improve your business or find a job, and above all that it could provide you with entertainment, but it has also bred a culture of entitlement, privilege and ingenuine people, fighting to out-post each other.

As a journalist, it is difficult to stand by sometimes, especially when you can see someone shoot their mouths off – or fingertips – off with opinions and comments on topics they know nothing about. It has given a platform to people to say and do as they please. While this is their right, if often infringes on the rights of others. It is too easy for someone to share whatever they think about topics and it creates a frenzy based on opinions taken as fact. Rumours, fake news, blasphemy and defamation are all buzz words associated with social media.

It has become a time where people so crave likes and shares that their empathy and humanity become second nature.

Where the first instinct at an accident is to take a video or photo and post it, instead of calling for help, or even helping yourself.

I am reminded of a very gruesome video that went viral recently. A woman, burnt and in pain jumps out of a window and dozens of people are around her, all with their phones in hand. Only one person tried to assist her. This is but one example. The fact that this was shared is but another problem. Imagine being the relative of that person, not knowing this has happened. You are far away, unable to assist and that is how you see your loved one.

Too many social media users take it upon themselves to “report” and “share” matters, when in fact it is not their place to do so. We are living in a time where it hasn’t happened, isn’t cool or can’t be great unless shared on social media.

Where no part of our lives is private anymore. Where our phones are constantly in our hands, waiting for the next post, often being jealous of a fake reality that we strive to have.

And please, don’t even get me started on the culture of influencers, who’s only success is influencing the youth to strive to drop out of school and achieve nothing with their lives. I am ready for the day this craze dies, but then I wonder, will they have anything to fall back on?

Travelling the world to promote brands who only see their value now. What happens long term? Do you think this “Insta-fame” will last forever? I really hope not. In a sense, they have made a mockery of our industry. With the power of traditional media seen as second best.

It really would be all good and well, if they used their “powers” for good, like maybe “influence” the youth to get up and study or work hard to achieve something in life.

Social media broke out as a major hit when it first appeared, but I doubt it was intended to be the “monster” it is today.

Of course this is but my opinion, and others may disagree. But I hope that it will inspire some to think twice. Life is short as it is and we spend too much time in a virtual reality, in a quest to be liked and friended that often we forget we have a real-life, with real people, that we often ignore in a rush to impress other fake people who are but pretending.

Rates delving into our ‘ou dag’ savings I would like to add my tuppence worth to the debate around the latest municipal accounts, specifically with regard to pensioners.

We are the people who grew up with the frugal ways of our World War II parents. We worked, brought up children, bought homes, paid taxes and we saved – for our “ou dag”.

A quick check around the neighbourhood has revealed that accounts have, on average, doubled. How can it be?

Our houses have just been revalued resulting in higher rates, every household has been slapped with an availability levy for water and electricity and the unit price of water has increased as has electricity – way beyond the Nersa recommendations.

It is heartbreaking to hear a pensioner say, “I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ll have to pay it out of my savings”.

The savings? That’s for the future!

My son was fortunate enough to be in scholar patrol at his primary school in 2017. That was the last year it ran. Why, do you ask, because of the children’s safety.

Having to deal with aggressive adults swearing

and shouting at them to having near incidents from selfish drivers nearly driving into them.

We live in a selfish, entitled society where the only important person is “me” and “do as I say not as I do”.

Schools have enough to deal with, I empathise with them in having to cancel the scholar patrol.

Good manners and behaviour start at home.

Car guard was just doing his job The letter “Die gevaar van selfaangestelde karwagte” (TygerBurger, 21 August) refers: I work for one of the companies where this car guard is employed and this gentleman who wrote the letter is lying about what happened and how it happened.

He fails to mention that he pepper-sprayed our car guard and that he was informed that the parking space he parked in is just for the workers and their clients of this specific building.

He was not asked to pay R5.

I know that for a fact because when it all went down, I was standing and smoking outside.

The car guard did not offer to look after his car at all. He actually asked him to move his car. He also fails to mention that he claimed to be a traffic officer and that he “can park wherever he wants to”.

He was the one that attacked the car guard.

The poor car guard was just doing his job and always helps others when and where he can and for him to be tarnished like this is not right at all.

Lei die werkers wat blomme afsny op Elke jaar hierdie tyd, skryf ek oor die saak.

Vorige jare het ek die parke-afdeling van Durbanville-munisipaliteit bedank vir die bordjies wat aangebring is op die groenstrook by Hoogstraat en die St. John’swegdriehoek (Bowlers openbare ruimte) om te keer dat die veldblomme platgesny word.

Vanjaar het ek weer, toe ek die platsnyers se bedrywighede opmerk, gebel en gevra dat die borde aangebring word wat sê: “No mowing, spring flowers blossoming”.

In die verlede is dit gedoen en die gesny is uitgestel tot ná die blomtyd. Ongelukkig is die borde nooit vanjaar opgesit nie en die snyers het net voorgegaan met platvee.

Nou is die gemeenskap van Durbanville die jaarlikse blommeprag kwyt. Dit is werklik hartseer, veral as ’n mens in gedagte hou hoe pragtig die blomme verlede jaar was weens die beter reënval. Dink net hoe mooi dit vanjaar sou wees, veral aangesien daar agter die renbaan ’n hele paar spesies voorkom wat op die rooidatalys van bedreigde spesies aangedui word.

We demand truth about tariffs There is too much game playing and avoidance of the truth in South Africa. It must stop. As the energy regulator, we expect Nersa to champion our rights and make certain the tariffs it imposes are not exceeded by local authorities. (“City electricity tariffs investigated by Nersa”, TygerBurger 21 August).

In the case of the City council, the council says Nersa approved the tariffs the council imposes on its clients.

However, according to Fin24, the energy regulator says no tariff increases have been approved for any municipality for the 2019/2020 financial year. Who is telling the truth?

If the council has charged clients more than it has the authority to, what steps are Nersa taking to stop this and ensure that the council pays back the money to those it would have robbed?

When concerned citizens and lobby groups representing a significant number of people engage with Nersa, why are swift, direct and unequivocal answers not forthcoming? Do we have another public protector (sic) story here?

We have a right to know the truth and I ask that a public statement be immediately issued giving the truthful information. Must we do a Paia (Promotion of Access to Information Act) application to force the truth from you? Please stop playing games to show us respect. We are entitled to this.

Dog poisoning by burglars on the rise ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

T

he poisoning of dogs to break into properties is rife in Gauteng, Free State, North West, Limpopo and other northern areas, but can be expected to spread to Cape Town and surrounds.

Several incidents of dog poisoning have been reported in Port Elizabeth recently, which were previously unheard of in the Eastern Cape, said Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, director of the Griffon Poison Information Centre in Port Elizabeth. He said it is to be expected that this tendency can spread to Cape Town.

The most common product being misused for malicious poisoning contains the illegal active ingredient aldicarb, which is formulated as small black granules that resemble poppy seeds. It was used in products such as Temik, and is popularly known as Two Step.

As many as 1 000 dogs are deliberately poisoned in South Africa every week, Verdoorn said. In one night in Roodepoort, up to 40 dogs were poisoned.

Three weeks ago about 250 dogs were poisoned in Sandton, Port Elizabeth, Jeffreys Bay and Roodepoort, he said.

Dr Peta-Danielle Müller-Deibicht of Goedemoed Animal Hospital confirmed that the

poisoning of dogs in the northern suburbs is not heard of yet.

Although not common in residential areas in the northern suburbs yet, incidents in which dogs are poisoned to break into properties, has been reported for years already in townships such as Fisantekraal, said Jenni Davies, spokesperson for Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW).

In Fisantekraal these are definitely related to break-ins and the use of aldicarb containing products has been mentioned.

“We have, over the years, dealt with dozens of cases of deliberate poisoning in Fisantekraal so this is not a new thing. Aldicarb causes a horrific death and is almost always fatal so it is crucial that owners are vigilant and protect their pets,” Davies said.

“If it’s not poison, they often just throw dogs with boiling water or stab them. I even dealt with one that was burnt with an exposed electric wire before they broke in,” Davies said.

Products containing alicarb has been withdrawn from the market in April 2012 and the possession of aldicarb products has been banned, Verdoorn said.

Zimbabwe, and it is suspected that it is being smuggled across the border and sold in little bags – allegedly at taxi ranks and in townships.

“It is suspected that it is used by syndicates consisting of South Africans, Zimbabweans and Nigerians in house break-ins,” he said. It is also used in poaching in game reserves.

“The only solution is to allow your dogs to sleep inside your home. If they find the poisoned meat, they will eat it,” he said.

Davies advised that dog owners must ensure their pets are not visible from the street.

“They must let their dogs sleep inside because most poisonings occur at night. If possible, put up fencing to separate front from back to keep your dogs away from the front yard.

“Many people keep dogs for protection and leaving them outside as ‘guard dogs’. But the fact is that it makes it easy for criminals to get rid of outside dogs,” she said.

Signs of aldicarb poisoning include disorientation, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, “pinpoint” pupils, excessive salivation, muscle tremors and seizures, uncharacteristic aggression, lameness and collapsing.

Other poisons have different signs, such as bleeding from the nose and mouth (some rat poisons) and tarry-looking stools.

“Death may occur within 30 minutes of ingestion so time really is of the essence when it comes to suspected poisoning,” said Dr Müller-Deibicht.

“Phone the vet ahead and let them know you are on your way with a suspected poisoning. Many pets can be saved if they receive veterinary intervention in time.

“Pets that sleep indoors are obviously less likely to be victims of malicious poisoning,” Muller-Deibicht said.

This year the festival will host seven qualifying rounds in areas such as Cape Town, Wellington, Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain, Bellville, Khayelitsha and the Overberg.

The main objective of the project is to discover new talent in the Western Cape.

The project also focuses on educating participants and their communities on the arts, the industry and the festival itself, and offer training to participants and winners to further develop their art.

ie Superliga-rugbyspanne van UnieMilnerton en die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWK) het die afgelope naweek saam met Durbanville-Bellville gekwalifiseer vir aanstaande maand se topses-kompetisie om die Presidentbeker.

vir o.19-rugbyspanne, maar dit was Stellenberg wat, soos verlede jaar, andermaal met die louere weggestap het.
