DISAPPOINTED: BUT SENIORS WILL RECEIVE GIFT PACKS

Christmas lunch cancelled RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

T

he annual Christmas lunch for seniors which is hosted by councillors in their respective wards, an event many pensioners look forward to throughout the year, will not be taking place this year. This is due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. The events are usually held in local community halls. Jackie Visser, councillor for ward 10 which includes Klipkop, Parow East, Avondale and Beaconvale, told TygerBurger it is

sad but that she is looking forward to hosting next year’s event. “I am very much aware of the disappointment for the seniors. They are looking forward to this yearly event, but unfortunately it is for their own good health that we have to cancel the events. “We plan to make small gift packs to hand out to seniors in the new year. “We also hope we can continue with these events in the future, but at this stage, as said, we must respect the Covid-19 regulations and the disaster management act,” Visser says.

Leonore van der Walt, councillor for ward 2 which includes Fairfield Estate, Glenlily, Parow North, Churchill Estate and Oosterzee, says in terms of level 1 of the disaster management act regulations there are still restrictions on the number of people attending a gathering, and the social distance that needs to be observed. “If a social event is not taking place as a result, it is to the benefit of those who would have attended. “The size of a hall available for social gatherings determines the number of people who may attend a function. It would be irres-

ponsible to have a party in this current pandemic, more so for seniors, as they are deemed high-risk,” Van der Walt says. Helen Carstens, councillor for ward 5 which includes Bothasig and Edgemead, said Covid-19 has indeed had an effect on life as we know it after she too had to cancel their lunch. “I would have had an end of year function for the seniors in my ward as I do every year. As we fell deeper and deeper into this lockdown, I have needed to make alternative arrangements. V To page 2
