PAROW NORTH: HOMELESS MAN HELPED

Pensioner offers shelter RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

A

pensioner from Parow North has opened her heart and her house to a sick homeless man after finding him sleeping on the pavement. Timothy Williams (67), originally from Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape, has been living on the streets for some time now. He lost some of his possessions not too long ago when the City’s Law Enforcement officers evicted him and other homeless men and women from the De Grendel train station where they have been seeking shelter

against the cold winter nights. His blankets and clothes were wet when the helpful local saw him lying near the station. “The man was unable to walk. He was lying on cement with his wet blanket spread out to get dry when I saw him on Wednesday 24 July. They took all of his possessions. “I asked him why does he not sit up against the wall. That is when he told me that he cannot stand up,” she said. The pensioner, who wishes to remain anonymous, told TygerBurger: “He was dizzy when I found him. He was in a bad state.” She arranged for Timothy to move into her garage where he now sleeps on a single mat-

tress. During the day he can sit outside and eat his lunch, also provided by the pensioner. The resident says the plan is to arrange to get Timothy to a clinic for him to see a doctor. “He has a terrible cough,” she explains. Asked about his health, Timothy explained he suspects it could be his kidneys. The pain was unbearable at first but has subsided since Wednesday last week, he said. He says he wants to apply for a government grant, but that he had lost his identification book. According to him, he came to the Western Cape years ago seeking employment. “I have been in Cape Town for nine

years now. I first worked as a painter in Brackenfell.” He says it was during this time that he made friends with the wrong people and because of bad life choices he ended up on the streets. “I have a brother in Eerste River, but cannot go live with him. “I also have two grown children. My daughter is a nurse in Graaff Reinet and my son is in the police service in Aberdeen, but I lost contact with them years ago,” he explains. The pensioner who now cares for him says she will take him to the clinic and help him get back on his feet. “At least now he has a roof over his head.”
