HELP COPS FIGHT CRIME: ROBBERY A HUGE CONCERN

arow residents are encouraged to report all types of crime or suspicious activities, no matter how big or small.

This, in turn, will help the police identify the crime hotspot areas in the area, says Warrant Officer Marco Geldenhuys, commander of Sector 2. Geldenhuys was addressing men and women at the Parow Com-

munity Health Centre on Thursday 27 June, when he asked residents to help the police fight crime.

“You need to report crime and open cases. This will help us identify the crime areas,” Geldenhuys says.

He adds that robbery is a huge headache for the police in the Parow area.

“There is still a lot of work to do to get all the relevant roleplayers on board to help us fight crime. These

are the Metro Police, Railway Police, Law Enforcement and the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID).”

He told those in attendance that the police are currently in talks with the City of Cape Town to get more law enforcement authorities deployed to the known hot-spot areas.

“As sector commander, my work is firstly to ensure safety in the community.

“If a crime is not reported, I will not know what happens in the area and where the hotspots areas are.”

Geldenhuys says Parow train station is another headache for the authorities. “We want to deploy more Railway Police at the train station, but as you know we are understaffed. We are trying to get more officers at the station because often we only have one patrol vehicle on duty,” Geldenhuys says.

eputy mayor and Mayco member for finance Ian Neilson last week admitted that the City was slappped on the wrist by the Auditor General (AG), for noncompliance with accounting principles where it relates to revenue for water bills it does not intend to recover.

In our article “Is the City profiting from water?” (TygerBurger, 26 June), the issue of a R1bn over-recovery of revenue in the water department in December 2018 was raised, as indicated by the City’s own Financial Monitoring Report.

In addition to this, TygerBurger discovered, (in the minutes of a meeting of the City’s finance portfolio), a recommendation by the AG that the City should not declare revenue for items they expect not to get revenue for.

As a result the City wrote off 239 899 water accounts of indigent households.

This announcement was however never made public in an official press release by the City.

The City requested an extra week to answer questions posed to TygerBurger. This week, Neilson responded to some of TygerBurger’s (TB) questions.

Below are the questions, with Neilson’s responses, additional comment as well as responses by civic action group Stop COCT. TB: Did the City, in fact, write-off or re-bill 239 899 water accounts on recommendation of the AG and why?

Neilson: “The City confirms the reversal of related indigent accounts after the Auditor General found non-compliance with the section of the generally recognised accounting principles (GRAP), which states that an inflow of future economic benefits, in other words, revenue, as a result of raising a receivable on an indigent debtor’s account is not collectable.

“In other words, there is no realistic possibility of the City recouping monies owed from customers meeting indigent criteria.

“Because previously debt write-offs for those meeting indigent criteria were not done automatically, the City’s financial statements reflected an ‘inflated’ figure for revenue, which misled groups such as Stop COCT into believing that the City was overrecovering in water and sanitation.

“The City had previously dealt with indigent arrears not by writing it off automatically but by offering conditional debt writeoffs or developing payment plans.

“The City was at all times consistent in saying that we were projecting an under-recovery of revenue and that a significant portion of the billed revenue would not translate into cash is it would eventually be written off.”

Stop COCT: “We disagree in that the City never provided proof for their claims of under-recovery as their financial statements stated the opposite month after month and year after year.

“It is due to poor debt management and policies that allowed outstanding bills to be billed each month without ever expecting to collect this money.

“This practice inflated the water department’s revenue year after year. This bogus revenue collection also contributed to an extremely inflated budget for the water department.

T

here is still no clear answer as to why four workers died at a Parow Valley recycling factory more than a month

ago.

The incident, which claimed the lives of the men occurred on Tuesday 21 May, (“Four dead at Parow factory”, 29/6).

At the time rescue workers indicated that they had found the workers, employed at Atlantic Plastic Recycling, unresponsive ly-

ing in recycled water. One other person was critically injured.

Emergency services who responded to the scene included the ER24 and Metro ambulance services, the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services and the Parow police.

Fred Cheetham, factory manager, told the newspaper at the time that the workers will receive trauma counselling.

“Unfortunately the matter is still under investigation, and we cannot confirm any cause of death,” Cheetham said last week.

Siyabulela Malo, Western Cape police spokesperson, confirmed this. He told TygerBurger that Parow police’s crime investigation department cannot yet confirm the cause of their deaths.

“They are still awaiting the laboratory and post mortem reports,” Malo says.

According to media reports the deceased men were identified as Shawn Duddy, John Joubert, Sebabalo Gobo and Phetho Mnamatheli.

The recycling company is located in Birch Close.

Two cops nabbed for theft Two police constables and three other suspects appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday 1 July after they were arrested for theft of motor vehicles, false number plates and the possession of implements used in house breakings last week.

The suspects, Luthando Mqikwa, Simphiwo Sex, Sipho Flex, Luxolo Kowa and Siyabongo Dlanga will remain in custody at the Bellville Police Station until their next appearance on Thursday 4 July.

“The vigilant Bellville police was instrumental in arresting the five people on Thursday 20 June at 22:30 in Parow North,” said Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut, provincial police spokesperson.

“Police officers attached to Bellville police spotted two suspicious looking vehicles, a Volkswagen (VW) Caddy and a marked police Opel Corsa in their area.

Both vehicles were followed, until they stopped at a residence in De Grendel Avenue, Parow North. At this stage the occupants became aware of the police presence and fled the area.”

They were pursued and with the assistance of police backup, both vehicles were forced to stop. According to Traut, the VW Caddy, an official police vehicle, was driven by a police constable and he had two passengers.

“The Opel Corsa, also an official police vehicle, was driven by a member of the public and his passenger was a police con-

stable. Both vehicles were fitted with cloned registration plates and it was established that the vehicles were removed from police premises without the necessary authorisation,” he said.

The suspects aged between 30 and 35 were arrested. They had in possession of implements used in burglaries comprising a crowbar, cable ties and gloves.

Their involvement in house robbery cases is now being investigated as one of the vehicles were seen fleeing a house robbery in Durbanville in June.

Captain Jonathan Blanckenberg, spokesperson of Bellville police, said other cases are being investigated and they will remain in custody at the Bellville Police Station.

Ramaphosa wore a smart suit, tie and shirt from House of Monatic, which owns and manufactures formal wear brands such as Csquared and Monatic, among others.

In his address, Ramaphosa reiterated his call for people to buy local. “The suit, shirt and tie I am wearing (today) was locally made by South African textile workers working at the House of Monatic here in Salt River, Cape Town. Let us all buy locally-made goods to drive up demand in our economy,” he said.

Managing director of House of Monatic Aldo Agnello says the staff were delighted to have the president wear one of their garments at the popular event.

tion,” Agnello explains.

He says House of Monatic has dressed a number of dignitaries like the late former president Nelson Mandela. “We are very privileged to have got the recognition.”

Agnello says the suit was not specifically made for the president, but he chose one that was already on the shelves, and it had to be altered to fit him.

He said this kind of recognition will showcase the country as the leader in the fashion industry.

House of Monatic have seen their garments being demanded all over the world – even collaborating with French fashion label, Christian Dior.

Agnello said the factory is committed to empowering young people and giving them a stepping stone to kick start their careers.

“We forever have designers in training, we have at least one on the premises almost all the time. We also have open space for higher education institutions that send their students for training.”

They have been in existence for 110 years and it is the last factory left that sells top-end tailored garments. Currently, the factory employs over 500 people.

nder die vlytige vingers van die vroue van die VLV (Vroue landbouvereniging) verander botteldoppies en ander weggooigoed in opvoedkundige speelgoed.

Op Woensdag 26 Junie kon Taren-lee Meintjies en haar speelgroepie, Lekker Bekkies, van Kalkfontein danksy die VLV-vroue ’n klomp speelgoed by Badisa Kuilsrivier in ontvangs neem.

Elmine Möller van VLV-Kuilsrivier sê hulle besluit elke jaar op ’n nuwe projek waarmee hulle na die gemeenskap kan uitreik. Herwinning is vir hulle baie belangrik en daarom het hulle besluit om speelgoed uit weggooi-artikels vir kinders te maak. “Daar is sulke oulike goed – toe ons eers begin kyk wat mens als kan doen was dit eintlik so lekker om te doen,” sê Möller.

Sy sê hulle maak lankal reeds botteldoppies bymekaar en gee dit gewoonlik vir die Tygerberg-hospitaal se arbeidsterapieprojek.

“Ons wil kyk hoeveel ons nog van dit bymekaar kan sit vir die speelgroepies wat nog stoeltjies benodig – dit is ’n aaneenlopende projek.” Laas jaar was hulle slagspreuk, “Plastiek is ons vyand”, en vanjaar is dit “Laat jou voetspoor.”

Dit is wat hulle wil doen, plastiek uit die omgewing haal en ’n positiewe nalatenskap (voetspoor) laat. Möller sê jy prop ’n groot sak plastiek in ’n 2 liter bottel. “Ons wil ook vir die kinders leer jy gooi nie net plastiek weg nie, jy kan iets daarmee doen.”

V Die VLV Kuilsrivier vier volgende jaar hul 90ste bestaansjaar. Daar is tans 37 lede. Die vroue kom een keer ’n maand op die eerste Woensdag van die maand by die NG Moederkerk bymekaar. Cat show is serious business TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji With only a few days to go to the Chats du Cap Cat show, the cats taking part in the show must be dying of curiosity.

The show will be open to the public from 09:00 to 15:00 and it will be held at Wynberg Girls’ High School on Saturday 6 July.

The theme is Christmas in July.

Chats du Cap Cat Club is a nonprofit organisation with a passion to host championship cat shows in the smaller country towns around Cape Town.

The cat show promises to have cats of all kinds that will certainly attract attention. From the more well-known breeds such as the Persian and Siamese to the more rare breeds such as Sphynx, Bengals and even the Lykoi “the werewolf cat” will be on show.

There will be breeds such as Burmese, Devon Rex, Abyssinians, Ragdolls, Orientals, Bambino, Elf, Main Coons and many more on show including domestic cats.

There are different categories from kitten category, three to six months of age, junior category, six to 10 months of age and then the adult classes which is further divided into Champion, SA Grand Champion, SA Double Grand Champion, SA Triple Grand Champion, Supreme Champion to Triple Supreme Champion.

Further, cats are divided into three main categories neuter, adult and kitten.

According to the event organiser, Leonard Ferreira, all the cats will be competing for international titles and will be judged according to each breed’s specific standard as set by the World Cat Federation (WCF).

“The cats are judged by experienced qualified judges, some of the judges have vast international experience and have judged all over the world. Our judges come from Cape

Ferreira says many people do not realise that there are specific breeds of cats and their aim is to introduce the different breeds of cats to both the local residents of Cape Town as well as the smaller towns around Cape Town.

“Chats du Cap has hosted numerous cat shows over the years in towns such as Franschoek, Robertson, George and Darling as part of the Spring Festival in September.

“We have recently been invited by the Swellendam Agricultural Show committee to host cat shows as part of their show programme.

“The response at all the shows has been astounding. In July 2018 we

hosted a cat show in Diep River which was a tremendous success with plenty of interest from the cat fancy.”

Chats du Cap also invited The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS) to be part of the show. They will bring some cats up for adoption.

“Over and above the serious business of showing and the competitive nature of our exhibitors, it is great fun where like-minded people with a common passion are gathered together sharing their cat-related experiences. What makes cat showing so worthwhile is seeing families getting involved, youngsters showing their much-beloved kitty and parents supporting their children,” he says.

Entry fee is R20 and children under 12 are free of charge.

“Een manier om dit te bereik is deur sensories-motoriese oefeninge wat funksionele herstel by chroniese beroertepasiënte kan aanhelp en hul brein se vermoë om te herorganiseer in reaksie op die sensoriese insette, ondervinding en leer, kan verbeter,” sê dr. Tania Zastron, wat onlangs haar doktorsgraad in sportwetenskap aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) behaal het.

Zastron het as deel van haar navorsing ’n kostedoeltreffende en eenvoudige taakspesifieke agt-week sensories-motoriese opleidingsprogram (SMO) ontwikkel om te bepaal of oefening die samehangende krag tussen verskillende geaffekteerde dele van die brein, asook funksionele herstel by chroniese beroertepasiënte kan verbeter.

Sy wys daarop dat uit die 71 mans en vroue wat genader is om aan die studie deel te neem, slegs 22 aan die volgende insluitingskriteria voldoen het: hulle moes 18 jaar en ouer wees; moes ses maande of meer voor die intervensie ’n beroerte (kroniese beroerte) gehad het; moes hul balans in ’n staande posisie vir 30 sekondes kon hou; moes sonder ondersteuning sewe meter kon loop; en toestemming van ’n dokter kry om aan die studie deel te neem. Die 22 mans en vroue met ’n gemiddelde ouderdom van 70 jaar het drie 45- tot 60-minute sessies per week oor die agt-weke tydperk voltooi.

Zastron het hulle in twee groepe verdeel, naamlik ’n SMO-en ’n aandag-gelyke kontrolegroep (KON). Die KON-groep is gebruik om te verseker dat die uitslae van die eksperimentele groep nie bloot was omdat hulle een of ander soort aandag gekry het nie. Die SMO het taak-spesifieke balansoefeninge voltooi wat gefokus het op die manipulasie van die liggaam se visuele stelsel, sowel as dele van die sensoriese stelsel wat met balans en ruimtelike oriëntering en die bewustelike persepsie van aanraking, drukking, pyn, temperatuur, posisie, beweging en vibrasie verband hou. Die KON-groep het vir dieselfde duur as die SMO-groep na opvoedkundige praatjies oor verskeie leefstylonderwerpe geluister.

Albei intervensies is deur ervare biokinetici by sentrums naby aan die deelnemers se huise aangebied.

Zastron sê deelnemers aan die SMOgroep het balansoefeninge soos kopknikke, rompleunings, strek, vang, gooi, enkelbeenstaan, stap, tandem-stap, gewigverskuiwing in treë, ratsheidslere, op die lyn stap, opstaan, stap met rigting en hindernisse, strek en stap, 360°-draaie en sit op ’n oefenbal en strek gedoen.

Dié tipe oefeninge is belangrik omdat ’n beroerte die balans binne die verskillende strukture in die brein ernstig versteur.

“Nadat die sentrale senuweestelsel beseer is, lê die herorganisasie van die brein die grondslag vir motoriese leer, die aanleer van nuwe vaardighede, sowel as vir funksionele herstel.”

Volgens Zastron het haar navorsing bewys dat die SMO-programme inderdaadwerk. “Deelnemers het verbeterde posturale wieg of balans getoon wanneer hulle met oop oë op ’n skuimrubbermat gestaan het, verminderde somatosensoriese afhanklikheid, verbeterde draaivermoë terwyl hulle stap, asook verbeterde waarneembare fisieke en sosiale funksionering. Hul vrees vir val het ook drasties afgeneem.

Taxi’s deel van die ekonomie Die laaste paar weke het die gesprek oor taxi’s weer opgevlam ná ’n sanger sy misnoë op Facebook daaroor uitgespreek het. Een van sy argumente is dat verkeerspolisie meer tyd daaraan spandeer om halfbesope bestuurders aan te keer eerder as om, na sy mening, op die groter taxi-probleem te fokus.

Nou as jy in Suid-Afrika woon dan het jy ’n mening oor taxi’s. Dit hang net af aan watter kant van die argument jy staan.

My bakkie dreig reeds ’n geruime tyd om my iewers langs die pad te los en verlede week is hierdie dreigement volbring. Die gevolg was ek moes noodgedwonge van openbare vervoer, spesifiek taxi’s, gebruik maak om by die werk te kom.

Toe ek uit Namakwaland in die Kaap kom was my eerste kennismaking met ’n taxi een wat ’n blywende indruk op my gelaat het. Terwyl ek langs die pad staan en wag het, het ’n taxi kom stilhou en die glydeur-operateur, op die vlakte as guardjie bekend, met deur en al uitgeklim. Jip, hy het die deur afgehaak, dit op die sypaadjie neergesit en my beveel om in te klim. Daarna het hy dit weer ingehaak en die taxi het vertrek, dood normaal.

Wanneer jy ’n ryding het vergeet jy baie keer dat daar miljoene mense is wat nie die voorreg het nie.

Jy kan voor jou deur in die motor spring, ry waar wil jy wil wees en weer terugkeer wanneer jy wil. Vir miljoene mense in Suid-Afrika is dit nie die geval nie. Nie net kan hulle nie hul eie motors bekostig nie, maar in meeste gevalle sukkel hulle om taxi-geld te kan betaal.

My gedwonge taxi-reis het my weer aan die dink gesit. Die taxibedryf het só ’n swak naam dat daar gewens word hulle kan net die van die paaie af verdwyn.

Maar as mens dieper kyk sal jy besef dat sou die taxi’s van die paaie afgehaal word, die ekonomie ’n groot knou kan kry of selfs in duie stort.

Ek lees in Suid-Afrika is daar tans meer as 250 000 taxi’s op die paaie, wat daagliks nagenoeg 15 miljoen mense vervoer.

Taxi’s vorm die grootste deel van Suid-Afrika se vervoerstelsel met ’n 60% sny van die koek. Een taxi kan tot R450 000 per jaar vir die eienaar in. Die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Taxi-raad het verlede jaar bekend gemaak dat die bedryf R90 miljard per jaar genereer.

Hierdie is verstommende syfers, veral gegewe dat taxi’s nog tot 1987 onwettig was. Taxi-eienaars is oorwegend swart, dus moet die bedryf gesien word as ’n rigtingwyser vir hoe swartmense self volhoubare ekonomië kan vestig en welvaart skep.

Mens moet erken daar is baie uitdagings in die bedryf. Onpadwaardige voertuie, bestuurders wat geen of min agting het vir verkeersreëls en gevegte oor roetes.

Taxi’s is glo verantwoordelik vir tot 70 000 ongelukke per jaar. ’n Ander kwelpunt is dat taxi’s meestal op ’n kontantbasis bedryf word en dit dus moeilik is om akkurate inkomste en belasbaarheid te bepaal.

Eerder as om taxi’s van ons paaie af weg te wens, moet ons die regering druk om strenger regulering op die bedryf toe te pas en dalk swaarder boetes oplê. Ek het nie die antwoorde nie, maar ek is seker iemand het en sal daarmee vorendag kom.

Maar intussen moet jy vanoggend die taxibedryf bedank as jou personeel, hetsy ’n huis-of tuinwerker, by die werk opgedaag het. – Brenden Ruiter

And in the first paragraph we already find out about this council’s priorities: “... the current budget constraints ... made it impossible to replace infrastructure quick enough ...”

But we see it fit to spend R20m on the Wood Bridge at Woodbridge Island. Lets pump it raw into the sea, nobody will notice. I’ve heard similar stories before about Eskom –

you know the one that has no money to maintain its power stations that were built to supply our electricity, but has lots of debt. Because when they had the money they pocketed it paying huge bonuses to all those “connected” ones.

Confusion and frustration caused For some time now I have been writing that the City does not understand proper accounting concepts and budgetary presentation which seems to have been echoed by the Auditor General (“Is the City profiting from water?”, TygerBurger, 26 June).

This failure makes any attempt to understand results very difficult and merely causes confusion and frustration and must throw doubt on the ability and competency of the Mayco member for finance.

There is no disputing the need for subsidising the poor, but it is the recording and presenting of these impacts that must be regularised.

In addition, the cross-subsidisation factor contained in the water tariff must be transparent and visible on all consumer accounts.

This subsidisation must not be included in normal water revenue but shown against the cost of such subsidised consumption.

Similarly, with write-offs for bad debts – this needs to be reflected against an initial provision and not related to normal revenue.

Including both of these factors in normal water revenue with subsequent removal as above is the cause of confusion and should be eliminated.

hen the cell door gets locked at 15:00, inmates are only able to get a breath of fresh air at 06:00 the following morning. What happens in that cell for those 15 hours is beyond anyone’s imagination.

TygerBurger visited Pollsmoor Prison in Tokai last week, along with sister publication People’s Post and a group of learners from Ocean View High School.

Upon entering Medium C, which is a release centre accommodating offenders with minor or petty crimes with a prison sentence of under 24 months, inmates were seen polishing the floor with a cloth.

After walking through the corridors of Medium C, visitors were taken to a courtyard where inmates dressed in orange and white jumpsuits roamed about. Those wearing white jumpsuits cook meals daily.

A 22-year-old inmate from Valhalla Park, who was convicted of murder, chatted to the newspaper from his cell. The department of correctional services requested that the man’s name not be published. “In December last year, my friends and I went clubbing and drinking in Long Street. There was a man who picked a fight with us then I ended up stabbing him in his neck with a broken beer bottle.

“I regret doing it because it’s not nice to be here,” said the man who admitted he was a member of the 28s gang in Bishop Lavis.

He was previously convicted for the possession of drugs. “This is my third time at Pollsmoor Prison. The other times I was arrested for drugs. It’s very full in the cells

which makes it difficult to be here. When I am released in September, I’m going to change my life.”

Spokesperson for Pollsmoor Prison, Lewies Davids, said the prison has the capacity to accommodate 4 396, but the current total for Thursday 27 June was 7 049. “Of the 7 049, we have about 700 women who are incarcerated in the Female Centre. Pollsmoor has five correctional centres which include Medium A, Medium B, Medium C, Remand Detention Centre and the Female Centre.

We are currently 160% overcrowded.”

Davids broke down the numbers by explaining that a cell which can accommodate 36 inmates, is actually occupied by about 90 prisoners.

“Correctional Services has a structured daily programme in place, depending on the security classification of an offender. We believe that an offender should be incarcerated under humane conditions in line with the international standards of detention,” added Davids.

He explained more about what the Medium C centre is about: “This is a release centre with offenders who have committed minor or petty crimes with a prison sentence under 24 months. Also when an offender has served a longer sentence, closer upon his release date, he will be placed at such a centre.

Medium C is a medium classified correctional centre, which means that most of the offenders at this centre belong to the work groups or work spans at Pollsmoor.

These offenders will go out daily under the supervision of a designated official and work in the agricultural fields, maintenance and mechanical workshops, gardens and the cafeteria.”

Capetonian coaches Indian discus thrower AVRIL FILLIES A search on social media for a coach who specialises in throwing events led to the meeting of Tanvi Singh from India and Edwill van der Westhuizen from the Bellville Athletics Club.

“Tanvi and her father Narender Malik from the Haryana State in India arrived in Cape Town on Thursday 27 June and will be here for the next two months until Friday 20 September. I’ll be helping her with strictly discus coaching,” said Van der Westhuizen, a shotput, discus and javelin coach at the club.

He is from Elsies River and also the current Masters Throw Pentathlon and fourth in the world. He is the coach at the Throws Academy at the Bellville Athletics Club and assists students and athletes from the Cape and now from India.

“According to Tanvi, she viewed the club information on Facebook and searched for the details of the coach. She and her father contacted the club and asked if I am willing to coach her in discus. I have never personally seen her throwing the discus.

“Her father sent me some videos and asked if I would assist with coaching and I agreed,” said Van der Westhuizen.

Her two month stay in South Africa is

not part of preparation of any championship in the near future but simply to receive training from a coach from a well-established club.

“I am currently a state level champion in the State Haryana in India, this is equivalent to a Western Province champion.

I only started throwing discus at school and want to pursue my sporting career.

When I am not throwing discus I help my mother with household chores,” Singh said.

When asked who she admires in her sporting code, she said Sandra Perkovic (29) from Croatia.

“I watched her performance in the discus at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and she inspired me to also try to be an Olympian one day. After that, I started watching videos of her throwing discus on YouTube. I knew a lot of hard work should be done and that is when my father and I started searching for a coach to help me become the best discus thrower,” she said.

Singh wants to take part in the World Championships and her dream is to be an Olympic athlete so that she can take part in 2028 in Los Angeles, California.

“With that as my goal my father and I decided to come abroad for better training and to improve my throwing to be ready for 2028,” Singh said.

W

ith the winter months upon us, more is being done to assist vulnerable homeless men and women, who find themselves without a roof over their heads.

Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, told TygerBurger last week that the City is currently assisting 16 night shelters by increasing temporary mattrass spaces by 247, to help accommodate additional street people during the winter months. It forms part of the City’s annual Winter Readiness Programme.

Badroodien says the City’s Street People Reintegration Unit is also aiding street people by helping them get back on their feet.

The unit offers social assistance to street people by helping them obtain identification cards, and to get social grants. It also helps them to relocate back to the place of origin, reunites them with their families and offers them access to substance abuse rehabilitation programmes, Badroodien says.

The unit also helps place street people at shelters, and gives them access to the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) for employment opportunities.

Esther Lewis, spokesperson for the Western Cape department of social development, said the department also supports street people by funding 27 shelters across the province. This equates to about 1 500 bed spaces, Lewis says.

“Tthe department reunified 700 people with their families in the last financial year,” Lewis says.

Explore Blouberg’s flora AVRIL FILLIES Flora lovers are encouraged to explore the Blouberg area after Prof Eugene Moll of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) reviewed the flower guide for novices, Coastal Walk Flower Guide in veld and flora.

The book is written by Kay Loubser, Petra Broddle and Jan Wicht and the professional layout done by Karen Venter.

Wicht is from Durbanville and the others from Blouberg.

Moll is a professor in the department of biodiversity and conservation biology at the UWC in Bellville.

The Blouberg Conservation Area (BCA) is an active volunteer organisation which engages in nature conservation and historical findings where the Battle of Blaauwberg was fought.

The book was compiled by a group of citizen botanists, known as Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers

This is the second edition of the guide and Crew were joined by a professional botanist, Petra Boddle.

The Cape Flats Dune Strandveld vegetation type that is found in Blouberg is fast becoming endangered and through the book that is on sale for R100 they hope to make people aware of more types of indigenous plants. The monthly guided walks on a 4 km trail at Eerste Steen are very popular.

The booklet was launched at the end of 2017 by the BCA at their clubhouse. Being the second edition of the book it may inspire other conservation groups to do something similar.

The book is on sale at Starke Ayres in Sunningdale, Stodels in Milnerton, Plants on Six in Melkbos and the authors.

Conservation students are in touch with Crew members on a regular basis and are aware of the booklet. It is good enough for study material but it covers only a small area.

The time-frame to write a booklet like this is more than a year of constant monitoring since the vegetation changes every season.

In his review Moll said that the booklet covers half the species (96) recorded on the trail, all in full colour and arranged by flower colour for easy use.

There is also an index of local common names, flowering times of the plants are also included, plus a map of the 4.4 km walk and a guide to the area’s geology.

You can join the guided coastal walk on the first Saturday of each month from April to November.

Time to un‘wine’ with Tops The Tops at Spar Wine Show returns to GrandWest in July and will take place under the theme Winederland.

Andrew Douglas, owner and producer of the wine show, says this is the show’s third appearance in Cape Town.

“This year’s show at GrandWest will deliver more than ever before – with an amazing line-up of well-known and undiscovered gems from the world-renowned Cape winelands for tasting and buying.

Local bands performing at GrandWest Local bands, Jeodhouse and Soul Select, will be performing at the Jackson Hall, GrandWest on weekends in July and August.

Soul Select is the brainchild of band leader, Matthew Syster, who brought together five gifted musicians with the common goal of bringing audiences something different.

Together they have created a unique and fun sound that sets them apart from the norm and keeps the crowd wanting more.

Boy band, Jeodhouse, may only be three years old but the musicians have over 20 ye-

ars of music and entertainment experience.

This pop, R&B and party band often plays for top-end corporate events. They’ve also performed at Jazz on The Rocks, MSC Musica and Jazzathon.

Soul Select will be playing on 5, 12, 20 and 27 July and Jeodhouse on 6, 13, 19 and 26 July.

In August, Jeodhouse will be playing every Friday night, except for Friday 30 August, when Nirvana will be taking over.

Soul Select will be performing every Saturday night in August.

Tevin Campbell back in SA Grammy-nominated, R&B and soul singer, Tevin Campbell will be performing at GrandWest on Saturday 27 July.

Marmalade Productions are celebrating 10 years in the entertainment industry and decided to bring Campbell back to South Africa after sold-out performances in 2013 and 2016.

Campbell has worked with some of the industry’s top writers and producers including Prince, Babyface, Al B. Sure, Narada Michael Walden, Wyclef and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

We are recruiting participants for a study on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and brain structure / function.

This study investigates how the brains of people with OCD work in comparison to the brains of healthy individuals. It also looks at response to medication in a subset of people with OCD.

n Eerste River athlete aims to inspire his community through his achievements and positive attitude.

Rowhaldo Ratz (21) from Eerste River is competing in the World Student Games in Italy from today (Wednesday 3 July) to Wednesday 17 July.

Ratz says his coach of 10 years, Johannes Kamfer, believed in him. “The objective of my coach is not for us to just achieve our personal goals, but also to spread a positive message in our community.”

Ratz says their achievements don’t mean anything if it doesn’t touch the lives of people in their communities. “We try to make a difference and we want the youth to see that there are better things to life than what’s happening around us.”

The long-distance athlete, who will compete in the 5 000m on Thursday 11 and Saturday 13 July, says he has always wanted to be part of the team. “It has been my goal to represent South Africa at the games and I see this competition as a stepping stone to the Olympics. The qualifying time for the 5 000m was 14 minutes, but he completed the race in 13 minutes 56 seconds which was a personal best for him.

Ratz, who suffered an ITB injury (sprained quad) last year, says he worked hard to be where he is today so his inclusion in the team is a blessing. “This is like the mini-

“Sometimes I have class, then a break, then I have to train during the break and then attend class again.

“My studies and training are equally important to me. You have to get that balance perfect.”

He says his parents are proud of him especially after the difficult year he had. “My parents always supported me and believed in me. They knew I had the potential and capability and I appreciate that a lot.”

Ratz says he is thankful for his friends and family who are his support system and contributed to where he is today. “I had to pick myself up and work towards this goal that I set for myself.”

Ratz made the World Cross Country team in 2015 and competed in China. In 2016 he was selected for the African Cross Country team and competed in the championships in Cameroon and last year he competed in the World Student Cross Country Championship in Switzerland. He says he was very proud because the team won gold and he was placed 37th. “This year I’m aiming for a position between third and fifth and hoping for the best.” He says the last week of training is crucial and he will focus on building up speed, intense speed and endurance.

“My coach and I want to try and make a difference in the community. Not just through our sport but through education too.”
