ie almal wat laerskool toe gaan weet wat hulle eendag wil word nie. Danielle Geldenhuys, ’n gr. 12-leerder van die Hoërskool Tygerberg, is seker die uitsondering op dié reël, want sy het al in graad 5 geweet dat sy ’n ruimtevaarder wil word. Sy is tans een van twee Suid-Afrikaners in Houston, Texas by die United-ruimteskool waar sy haar kinderdroom verwesenlik. “Toe ek in gr. 5 was, het my skool ’n dag gehad wat ons moes aantrek volgens die beroep waarin ons eendag wil wees. Ek het soos ’n ruimtevaarder aangetrek. “In gr. 11 het een van my vriende wat in my laerskool was, maar in ’n ander hoër-

skool is, vir my die vorms gestuur en gesê dat hulle dit by hul skool gekry het. “Hy het onthou dat ek ’n ruimtevaarder wou word en voorgestel dat ek aansoek doen,” het sy gesê. Sy het die aansoekvorms ingevul, haar CV opgestel en ná ’n paar telefoniese onderhoude is sy laat weet dat sy die skool kon bywoon. Die skool is só ontwerp om vir die leerders die struktuur, kennis, bronne, mentorskap en toepaslike omgewing te skep, sodat almal wat gekeur is, die “A Manned Mission to Mars”-projek kan voltooi. “Al die leerders neem aan ’n verskeidenheid aktiwiteite deel wat met die ruimte te doen het by die Johnson-ruimtesentrum, die Universiteit van Houston, Clear Lake, Riceuniversiteit, Houston-ruimtesentrum, die

George-sterrewag en die museum van natuurlike wetenskappe in Houston. “Die aktiwiteite sluit in: ’n toer van die Johnson-ruimtesentrumgeriewe, ’n bemanningsending, ’n spesiale projek by die George-sterrewag, ’n ARISS-skakel met die internasionale ruimtestasie en ’n internasionale video-konferensie oor lewenswetenskappe, bio-ruimtevaart en ruimtevaartmedisyne by ’n universiteit,” het Danielle gesê. Om die missie na Mars-projek te voltooi, word die leerders in spanne ingedeel. Elke span het ’n spesifieke doel en funksie. Die spanne is: goud (missiebeheer), maroen (Mars-operasioneel en -logistiek), rooi (Mars-transito), groen (Mars-bewoning) en blou (Mars-verkenning). V Na bl. 2.
There are so many phenomenal women with whom we share our daily lives – our mothers, wives, children, neighbours, best friends – most of them anchors who help steer our lives with steadfast care and love. With August being Women’s Month, we at TygerBurger and our sister publications (People’s Post and City Vision) wish to honour the women in our lives by honouring those women who have experienced and beaten the worst of life’s hardships and ills, emerging as survivors, proud and dignified. Please help us to help restore a little of this dignity as we once again embark on a special monthly campaign by providing Bags of Hope – literally, handbags filled with all the essentials a rape or abuse survivor might need. Two years ago the Chill Room in our offices was filled to the brim with these Bags of Hope, which contained everything from bras and panties to sanitary pads, perfume and talc, washcloths and soap, toothpaste and chocolates. In some cases, the bags contained a handwritten note wishing the receiver well on her journey to recovery and a life outside of abuse and violence. We are hoping to recreate this female pantry and be able to donate all the items we receive to a charity of our readers’ choosing. For this, we are once more calling for help from our loyal readers – those caring people who have supported our monthly campaigns so faithfully since the beginning of the year. So, if you have a handbag or two and the means to fill it with what you would have appreciated were you a recipient yourself, please bring it to our offices.
