The Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) celebrated the launch of their next five-year term at an event in Parow last Thursday. It was established in

2012 as a Special Ratings Area (SRA) and aims to provide supplementary services to the local authorities along Voortrekker Road up to Durban Road before Tyger Valley. statistics to show for their work since then. (See full list of figures on page two.) Property investment has seen growth of 16% over the past five years within the VRCID’s area of coverage, Zevenster said. This is compared to an average of 6% over the same period in the greater City of Cape Town. “Business owners have invested around R66 million towards bettering the area,” he added.

Social issues have been an important aspect of their operations since the start. “It’s one thing to clean a place or improve security, but we don’t want to simply move the problem into a different area.” Ian Neilsen, deputy mayor, had high praise for the organisation. “The VRCID has turned this area around in the last five years after 20 years of urban decay,” he said.
