f past performance is anything to go by, big changes are in store for Voortrekker Road between Bellville and Parow, and its surrounds.

The Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) celebrated the launch of their next five-year term at an event in Parow last Thursday. It was established in

2012 as a Special Ratings Area (SRA) and aims to provide supplementary services to the local authorities along Voortrekker Road up to Durban Road before Tyger Valley.

Hardus Zevenster, chairperson of the VRCID board, said he and others realised seven years ago that something needed to be done in the area to prevent further urban decay. After months of planning, the VRCID’s first term started in 2012, with impressive

statistics to show for their work since then.

Property investment has seen growth of 16% over the past five years within the VRCID’s area of coverage, Zevenster said.

This is compared to an average of 6% over the same period in the greater City of Cape Town.

“Business owners have invested around R66 million towards bettering the area,” he added.

Social issues have been an important aspect of their operations since the start. “It’s one thing to clean a place or improve security, but we don’t want to simply move the problem into a different area.”

Ian Neilsen, deputy mayor, had high praise for the organisation.

“The VRCID has turned this area around in the last five years after 20 years of urban decay,” he said.

BID sal Beaconvale nou veilig hou AVRIL FILLIES

resies ’n jaar nadat die aanvanklike versoek aan die Stad Kaapstad gerig is om Beaconvale in Parowvallei as die Beaconvale-verbeteringsdistrik (BID) te registreer, is dié status op Maandag 31 Julie toegeken.

Dit is Geocentric, ’n stedelike bestuur en navorsingsorganisasie, se negende verbeteringsdistrik.

Die BID volg in die voetspore van naburige gebiede soos Elsiesrivier en Parow, wat ook dieselfde status verkry het.

Beaconvale is hoofsaaklik ’n nywerheidsgebied en die tuiste van ’n mengsel van nywerheidsparke, kleinhandelaars en klein nywerhede langs Connaughtweg en Jan Smutsstraat.

“Die aanvanklike doel vir ’n BID was om die toenemende vlakke van stedelike verval aan te spreek,” het Sean Lavery, voorsitter van BID, gesê. “Bogenoemde twee strate is die afgelope paar jaar geteister deur misdaad wat sakelui genoop het om kragte saam te snoer om ’n langtermyn-oplossing te vind.

“Terwyl vandalisme, storting, diefstal, rommelstrooiery en ander ernstige misdade in die gebied toegeneem het, is niks gedoen om dit te verbeter of te verander nie. Ons het dit as normaal aanvaar,” het hy gesê.

Derhalwe is besluit dat Beaconvale by sy bure, Elsiesrivier, Parow en die Epping-nywerheidsgebied, sal gaan kers opsteek om ook in stedelike bestuur te belê en sy eie verbeteringsdistrik te begin.

“Verbeteringsdistrikte speel ’n belangrike rol in die welvaart van stedelike sentra.

Die Stad kan net soveel doen met die bronne tot hul beskikking. Indien verbeteringsdistrikte reg bestuur word en die gemeenskap

Die dienste wat sedert Maandag 31 Julie deur BID ingesluit is, is die voorsiening van openbare veiligheidsbeamptes, skoonmaak van die gebied, onderhoud en verbetering van die stedelike openbare omgewing en/of infrastruktuur, en gemeenskapsdienste.

“Ons as die BID onderneem om sekere doelwitte te bereik – met die afname van misdaad as ons eerste prioriteit.

“Ons wil dit doen deur sigbare polisiëring van die BID, die samewerking van die polisie van die naburige woongebiede, die wetstoepassingseenheid van die Stad en die sekerheidsfirmas in die area. Ons wil ook ’n veilige en skoon openbare omgewing skep, die waarde van eiendom beskerm, nuwe beleggers lok en ondersteuning verleen om maatskaplike verantwoordelikhede in die gebied te bemark,” het hy gesê.

Geocentric is verantwoordelik vir die al-

gemene bestuur van die BID, en die Zonewatch-sekerheidsmaatskappy vir die veiligheid van die publiek.

Die ander agt verbeteringsdistrikte wat deur hul bestuur word, is Elsiesrivier, Glosderry, Maitland, Soutrivier, Somerset-Wes, Stikland, Strand en Tygervallei.

Volgens Gene Lohrentz, Geocentric-eienaar en uitvoerende hoof, was daar ’n groot afname in misdaad in bogenoemde gebiede en ’n toename in belangstelling van sakelui, nadat ’n verbeteringsdistik in elk van die woongebiede geskep is.

“Ons het Gert van der Merwe, ’n afgetrede inspekteur met meer as 22 jaar se ondervinding in die polisie, as die BID-bestuurder aangewys. Hy is goed vertroud met die woongebiede suid van Bellville en het gesê dat dit tot almal se voordeel is dat Beaconvale veiliger en skoner is, sonder vuilheid en misdaad,” het Lavery gesê.

Derek Bock, chief operations officer of th he VRCID, said he is proud of the difference th he organisation has made in terms of cleansing, but also the relationships they’ve buiilt with business owners in the area.

He says the biggest challenge they’v ve faced over the past five years has bee en crime. “For this reason we work very close ely with police in Bellville and Parow an nd City Law Enforcement agencies and the lo ocal neighbourhood watches.” He said prosttitution, problem buildings and years of urban decay also play a part in criminal activ vities. Some of the VRCID’s upcoming projectts include a CCTV roll-out.

A total of 66 CCTV cameras will be in nstalled within the VRCID over the next few w years.

Die rede waarom sy jeugbediening Born to be Reborn genoem word, is omdat baie van die jeug in konflik en ongeluk gebore is en nodig het om hergebore te word.

Sy droom is om ’n sentrum te bou waar al die negatiewe dinge in hul lewens uitgewis sal word sodat hulle hul eie potensiaal en godgegewe talent sal gebruik om iets positiefs met hul lewens te maak.

“Ek wil graag die jeug die kans gee om iets beters met hul lewens te maak as om by sosiale euwels betrokke te raak. Ek en my span het dieselfde visie en ons het vir mekaar gesê dat as ons nie probeer nie, ons nooit sal weet of ons wel in een persoon se lewe ’n verskil kan maak nie. Ons moet ophou kla oor die verkeerde dinge wat die jeug doen en iets daadwerkliks doen,” het hy gesê.

“My tweejarige tweeling is my inspirasie om ’n verandering in iemand anders se lewe te maak. Wat en waar sal hulle wees indien daar nie iets positiefs oor tien jaar in die vooruitsig vir hulle is nie? Ek kan baie maklik my goed oppak en die land verlaat, maar ek is ook deel van die land en wil my eie nala-

Diewe, Parow­Noord loer vir julle AVRIL FILLIES

isdadigers wat dink hulle kan nou hul streke in Parow-Noord kom uithaal, sal hul rieme styfloop nadat drie LPR-kameras by die ingang na dié woonbuurt geïnstalleer is.

Die woonbuurt sal ook binnekort met ’n vierde een spog. “Verlede jaar het die gemeenskap die moontlike installering van die kameras bespreek om die in- en uitgaan van motors in die woonbuurt te monitor. Die kwotasie wat aan ons gegee is, was tussen R55 000 en R75 000 per kamera en dat ons drie nodig het,” het Ashley Marais, voorsitter van die Parow-Noord-belastingbetalersvereniging (PNBV), gesê.

Volgens hom is sulke bedrae astronomies vir die meeste gemeenskappe.

“Die meeste inwoners in Parow-Noord is pensioentrekkers en die bestuur van die belastingbetalersvereniging se grootste bekommernis was hoe ons die geld in die hande sou kry. Ons kon dit op daardie tydstip nie bekostig nie.

“Met die hulp van die buurtwag het ons toe besluit om geldinsamelingsveldtogte te hou. Tydens ons eerste veldtog, waar ons boereworsrolle verkoop het, het die eienaar van Zonewatch/Pinewatch, Tommy Blatherwick, die bestuur genader oor ’n borgskap vir die eerste kamera.

Hy het ook onderneem dat hulle die kamera sal onderhou en monitor. As hulle meer

klante uit die gemeenskap sal kry, sal hulle ook ’n tweede en derde kamera borg. Hy het ook aangebied om ’n patrolliemotor te skenk, wat van Maandae tot Vrydae van 06:00 tot 18:00 die woonbuurt sou patrolleer,” het Marais gesê.

Die drie kameras is in Desember verlede jaar geïnstalleer en het verskeie nommerplate geregistreer van motors wat in en uit die woonbuurt beweeg.

“Ons kameras het nommerplate van motors opgetel wat by ernstige misdade en ook kleiner misdade betrokke was.

“Danksy die kameras kon ons die verdagte voertuie aan die polisie deurgee en het ons ook gehelp om misdaad in ons woonbuurt te laat afneem,” het Marais gesê.

Kameras help misdaad bekamp Die groter Kaapstad maak ook gebruik van LPR-kameras om misdaad te help bekamp. Die woongebiede waar daar min of geen LPR-kameras is nie, word dan die gebiede waar die misdadigers toeslaan, het Marais gesê.

“Die installering van die kameras kom ook nie sonder sy eie probleme nie. Ons almal is nie aangelê om die tegnologie te verstaan en te vertolk nie.

“Boonop het die meeste woonbuurte ook nie die kontant dadelik tot hul beskikking om die kameras aan te koop nie en moet geldinsamelingsveldtogte gehou word om die geld te in,” het Marais gesê.

Hy het ook genoem dat toestemming van die munisipaliteit verkry moet word oor die plek waar die kameras opgerig word.

“Dit is ook moeilik om die regte mense te kry om die kameras op te rig en te installeer.

“Ons kan nie net kameras oprig soos ons wil nie, maar moet die kameras eers by die munisipaliteit registreer.

“Die onderhoud van die databasis moet gereeld gedoen en nagegaan word, asook die onderhoud van die hardeware van die kameras en draadlose toerusting,” het Marais gesê.

Die sekerheidsmaatskappy wat ParowNoord se kameras geskenk het, het ’n model ontwerp om iets in die gemeenskap terugploeg wat hulle ondersteun.

“Pinewatch/Zonewatch se slagspreuk is: ‘In die gemeenskap, met die gemeenskap en vir die gemeenskap’, en dis presies wat die maatskappy in Parow-Noord gedoen het.

“Hulle het die kameras opgerig sonder dat die inwoners van Parow-Noord ’n groot bedrag moet betaal en ook die onderhoud van die kameras as hul verantwoordelikheid aanvaar.

Safety tips to keep women protected W

omen’s Month is the perfect opportunity to look at basic safety habits to protect women from crime. Today we commemorate the important part that women have played in the history of our nation, and they need to be protected.

“Being distracted makes you a soft target.

Criminals are always on the lookout for soft targets and will take advantage if you are not paying attention. Being aware of your surroundings and potential threats is the first and most effective line of defence for anyone,” says Fidelity ADT’s district manager (Cape Town North), Verena Hulme.

She recommends cutting out distractions as far as possible and reasonable. This includes not taking or making phone calls while driving, especially if you have your children in the vehicle.

“Put your phone away when out and about. Speaking on the phone while putting your kids or shopping into the car, for example, means you are concentrating on the call and not keeping an eye on your surroundings. It presents criminals with a great opportunity to hijack you or make off with your belongings.

“While driving, make sure your doors are locked and any valuable items are placed under the seat or in the boot, out of sight.

If you are approaching your house, be on the lookout for any suspicious persons and rather drive around the block if you don’t feel safe. Also remember to stop and concentrate when approaching or leaving your house. Wait in the road for the gate to open before pulling into the driveway,” Hume says.

She adds that it’s also a good idea to change your driving routes and departure times every now and then.

“We are creatures of habit, which makes us predictable. Criminals scoping out your house will be able to know exactly when you

leave and arrive and which routes you take.

Keep them guessing by leaving perhaps slightly earlier or later and taking different routes to drop the kids off at school, for example. The same applies to things such as your running routes and times, gym visits, and even your locking up and leaving routine,” she says.

She says that intuition is a powerful subconscious insight into situations and people, and she encourages women to trust their instincts; if a situation doesn’t feel safe, it probably isn’t.

Hulme says that if confronted by a criminal, escape is always the best option.

“If you are able to, run away, yell for help – do whatever you can to attract attention.

If the criminal is after your purse or other items hand them over, or throw them in one direction and run in the other.”

“When possible tell someone where you are going and the time you expect to return.

Save emergency numbers on your phone and try to memorise at least one contact number you can call in the event of an emergency. Remember, less is more when it comes to wearing flashy jewellery and carrying cash. If you are taking a handbag, carry it close to your body and not dangling by the straps.”

By exercising these precautions, Hulme believes women can develop good safety habits that will assist them in avoiding dangerous situations.

“I encourage women to not only use these tips, but to share them with family and friends. Most importantly, trust your instincts. If someone or something makes you feel uneasy, get away or get help,” she concludes.

“Life is challenging for everyone, women included. We hope that following these tips will help keep women safe while they tackle their daily demands,” says Hulme.

y liefde vir bejaardes en om iets spesiaals vir hulle te doen, is die rede waarom Jaco Vercuiel, voorsitter van die Alpha-hengelklub in Parow, op Saterdag 22 Julie kos aan sowat 1 500 bejaardes uitgedeel het.

“Ek is lief vir kosmaak en het verlede jaar my Facebook-vriende uitgenooi om aan ’n potjiekoskompetisie met ’n verskil deel te neem. Ek het regtig uitsonderlike Facebookvriende en hulle het nie op hulle laat wag nie en die bestanddele hier by die klubhuis afgelewer,” het Vercuiel gesê.

Hy moes aanvanklik besluit of hy jong mense of bejaardes gaan help as sy bydrae om ’n verskil in hul lewe te maak.

“My besluit om die bejaardes te help is te danke aan my ouma wat oor die negentig jaar oud is. Deesdae kom laai kinders hul ouers by ouetehuise af en ‘vergeet’ van hulle.

“Omdat my ouma nog deel is van my daaglikse bestaan, het ek besluit om bejaardes te help,” het hy gesê.

Die potjiekos wat sy vriende gemaak het, het nagenoeg 1 040 bejaardes gevoed.

“Die bejaardes van ouetehuise in die omgewing het lekker geëet, maar ek het gevoel ek wil meer doen. Aan die begin van die jaar het ek besluit om Kersfees in Julie te hou.

“Ek het gaan sit en dit met my hengelklubvriende bespreek en siedaar, op 22 Julie het ons 1 500 mense gevoed,” het Jaco gesê.

Van sy ander vriende het gehoor van sy nuwe projek en wou almal deel wees daarvan. “Musikante het gebel en gesê hulle sal gratis optree om die bejaardes te vermaak terwyl hulle in die klubhuis eet. Van die kunstenaars wat opgetree het, was Rooies Grobbelaar, Desmond Wells en Louisa Fourie.

“Ek het Solidariteit se organisasie Helpende Hand gebel en gevra om kos vir bejaardes te kom haal en te versprei. Buiten vir die bejaardes in die ouetehuise, is daar ook bejaar-

“Die disse wat voorberei was, het wildspotjie, kerriehoenderpot, kerrie-afvalpot, wildspasteie, wildslasagne, geroosterde vark, beesvleis, soetpampien, soetpatats, blomkool met witsous en kaas, malvapoeding en jellie en vla ingesluit.

“Danksy die borge kon die bejaardes na afloop van die ete ook met ’n geskenkpak van Helpende Hand huis toe gaan,” het hy gesê.

Geldelike bydraes van die borge sal nou weer volgende jaar aangewend word vir sy volgende projek.

“My doel met die Kersfees in Julie-projek was om bejaardes goed te laat voel en te bederf sodat hulle in hul winterjare gekoester kan voel. Die dag was geskep om as ’n goeie herinnering te dien sodat hierdie kosbare mense iets kan hê om aan vas te klou tot hul-

Volgens hom het baie van die bejaardes ná die ete kom dankie sê, maar wat hom emosioneel maak, is die briefies wat die afgelope week by hom afgelewer is.

“Die meeste briefies is met die hand geskryf in bewerige skrif vol spelfoute, maar vir my gaan dit oor die gedagte dat die bejaardes dit goed gedink het om op ’n tasbare manier vir my dankie te sê.

“Ek sal seker nou moet verbeter op die etes vir die 1 500 wat ek vanjaar gevoed het. Dankie tog vir vriende wat weer sal inspring en borge wat nou al laat weet het dat hulle ook deel van die bejaardes se spesiale dag wil wees,” het hy gesê. Hy het ook sy dank teenoor die hengelklub, die bestuur en al die helpers uitgespreek. “Ek wil spesiaal dankie sê vir die seniors van die Hernus Kriel-sentrum wat die malvapoeding, die soetpatats en pampoen gemaak het.”

Resident warns: petrol thief active in Plattekloof’s Ext. 2 A resident of Plattekloof Extension 2 is warning other residents in the area about a new trend, where petrol is stolen from a vehicle parked outside a home.

“On Monday 24 July between 04:43 and 05:20 petrol was twice stolen from my car.

The rubber pipe between the petrol inlet and the tank was cut and about 30 litres of fuel

were siphoned out of the vehicle the first time. The perpetrator drove in and out of my driveway a few times and stole another 20 litres,” the resident says. She reported the theft to her security service and someone came around to view the video footage she had of the incident. “The security service said they would increase patrols. I haven’t

reported the theft to the police as I believe they have more important issues to deal with. I am calling on the community in the northern suburbs area to try to identify the thief. I am of course taking a chance that this person is from our area,” the resident says.

According to her, the thief’s vehicle appears to be a Renault Clio, but she is not ab-

solutely sure.

“I hope someone will be able to help identify the suspect and give us a lead on who it may be. I believe this is not the first time this person has done it, and it will probably not be the last.” She is appealing to all her neighbours to be vigilant and not park their cars outside.

“Toe die egpaar en die onbekende man by die plek opdaag, is hy deur vriende van die man in hul motor beroof. Die vriende het die bejaarde man die koevert met die geld gevra en hy en die onbekende man het die misdaadtoneel verlaat,” het Williams gesê.

Volgens Williams het die bejaardes ’n klag ingedien en duur die ondersoek voort.

“Ek wil almal versoek om nie geld oor die toonbank by banke te trek nie. Plaas liewer geld op jou bankkaart en betaal jou rekeninge met die kaart. As jy wel geld moet trek, doen dit by ’n kitsbank in ’n besige winkelsentrum,” het Williams gesê.

Plaaslike jong musikant is onlangs getrakteer op ’n meestersklas van ’n vooraanstaande Carnegie Hall-mu-

sikant.

Mia Groenewald, ’n gr. 6-leerder aan die Laerskool Panorama en ’n kontrabasspeler, het dié meestersklas in kontrabasspel van Kris Saebo, kontrabasspeler van die vooraanstaande kamermusiekgroep Decoda van Carnegie Hall in New York, ontvang.

Net voor die Junie-skoolvakansie is sy deur die Hugo Lambrechts-musiekskool in Parow gekies om die meestersklas te ontvang.

Ná ’n inspirerende etensuurkonsert van Decoda, het die openbare meestersklasse begin en sy het haar goed van haar taak gekwyt. Saebo was baie beïndruk met haar vertoning en het veral haar goeie intonasie en vinnige begrip geprys.

Mia is ook ’n kranige klavierspeler en neem vanaf graad 2 klavierlesse en kontrabaslesse vanaf graad 4.

“Ek luister graag na harp- en dwarsfluitmusiek, omdat die pragtige klanke my rustig laat voel. Hoewel musiek my eerste liefde is, oorweeg ek dit nie om ’n musiekloopbaan te volg nie. Daar is soveel ander dinge waarin ek belangstel en ek hou my opsies oop,” het Mia gesê.

Sy geniet Tchaikovski se musiek en speel graag van sy komposisies op die klavier omdat dit vir haar mooi is.

“My musieksmaak strek van Afrikaans tot pop, solank dit net mooi is en ritme het.

“Ek is ook deel van die skool se marimbaen Orff-orkeste. My lewe bestaan nie net uit musiek nie, ek speel ook hokkie vir die skool en is deel van die dramaklub. Ek neem jaarliks deel aan die eisteddfod en geniet

Woman, just let it go. It will be okay.

Ten years ago I was in the car with him, blood gushing from the cut on my brow.

A wound inflicted because I had confronted him about his latest side-chick.

At that point, three months pregnant, I was too involved in my own depression and self-hate to realise I was also only a side-chick. Three months later, when he used a baseball bat to beat up me, my car and the home we shared, I left him. That day I decided he had reached the belowzero tolerance level I had finally set as my end-of-tether resilience marker where he was concerned. My family members were all strangers. None would even talk to me, never mind spend time worrying over the consequences of the choices I had made that had landed me in that position in the first place. I simply wanted to die.

So, as soon as I came out of the hospital, my soul more bruised than my purple body, baby still very much alive, I tried to take my own life.

This was in the middle of the most As I take severe bout of depression I had stock of to­ ever suffered.

The bath was day, Women’s drawn.

The razor opened.

The tip of Day, I own up an incision made to my past ... onto my left palm.

And another one.

And the last one, eating ever deeper into the soft flesh, a trickle of blood pulsing out rhythmically to the beat of my heart ...

I was startled that I had allowed myself to sink so low. Me, the model child with the model dreams and the model future ahead of me. Me, who ended up loving the wrongest man for the wrongest reasons.

As I take stock of today, Women’s Day, I own up to my past. I stand taller than ever, having won the battles that have made me the human being I am: strong, brave, kind, loving, healthy; mother, lover, friend. Today, as someone who has overcome the odds and who has so much to look forward to, I am not ashamed to look back on the me of 10 years ago.

My moment of silence today goes out to every woman lying in a hospital somewhere, beaten black and blue, fighting her own demons.

Please, there is life after him; you can pull your life back together.

Geen geluid word ook gehoor van die appèlle van eiendomseienaars wat weens die vorige waardasie oorbelas word nie. Geen waardasiehof het nog in sitting gegaan om die appèlle aan te hoor (soos voorgeskryf deur wetgewing) nie, maar intussen moet die oorbelaste

eiendomseienaar die aangeslane heffing betaal.

Social cancer of modern feminism Tasneem van Rooyen wrote a typical article (‘But what are a woman’s priorities?’, TygerBurger, 2 August) based on the mythical concept of patriarchy, whereby women are supposedly oppressed.

The ideology of patriarchal theory assumes that all men benefit at the expense of women. It is not possible to analyse the wrongs within society by using a narrow lens that only considers the negative effects impacting women while ignoring the experiences through the eyes of others.

If patriarchal oppression were a reality, then feminism would not exist – particularly the so-called progressive totalitarian variety that tries to implement apartheid-style segregation and safe spaces.

Counter-arguments are viewed as aggression and even normal conversation deemed to contain “micro-aggressions”. Speech is an act of violence that justifies retaliatory physical violence.

So let us assume that every man has toxic masculinity, power and privilege in South Africa. Under real patriarchal oppression, 99% of male deaths due to dangerous jobs could be prevented by sending women to complete work such as mining, high-rise building

construction and servicing of electrical pylons. Patriarchal oppression would reverse the bias in family courts; it would provide ample shelters for male victims of domestic violence; reverse the high ratio of male suicides within society; ensure the implementation of only male gender studies, and provide more lenient jail sentences for men as opposed to women. Modern feminism has metastasised into a social cancer.

Neighbourhood noise and nuisance I’ve read the article by Banathi Mgqoboka (Neighbour insists on ‘Sunday silence’, TygerBurger, 2 August). I have a noise disturbance and noise nuisance across from my house in a residential area.

I have reported it to Saps, Law Enforcement, City of Cape Town, Environmental Health and the DA ward councillor – everyone you mentioned in your article – but it’s been a year and nobody has helped us. The police station is opposite this small distribution operation

and has seen us up and outside at four in the morning due to the noise, doing nothing because they stop numerous times for FREE milk and bread.

This distribution operates outside on the pavement 24/7, pulling crates from one pavement to another, throwing empty crates into empty trucks, leaving reverse buzzers on for hours. There are multiple trucks coming in and out, blocking traffic, with cars hooting constantly.

I’ve been using sleeping tablets for a few months now.

My son sleeps with earphones; my grandson has gotten a letter from school about sleepiness and lack of focus in class.

And since this place has been here, many unwelcome characters have been coming in and out.

My concern is that the City continues to increase the water restriction level – at the risk of becoming a smelly and disease-stricken Western Cape. What has happened to the reservoirs that are available in Table Mountain, but more importantly, why is desalination not being implemented? I have heard numerous discussions on desalination, and it is not as costly as was previously estimated.

Should the City not consider this, and stop implementing higher and higher restrictions?

Dié twee spanne het goed opgeweeg en voorlangs het sake baie gelykop verloop.

Maar uiteindelik het die Stellies met vier drieë teenoor die drie vyfpunters van die Worcester-span sake met 24-19 beklink.

Brackenfell het op sy beurt na die Boland uitgewyk en op Wellington ’n uitstekende oorwinning van 33-31 oor Hugenote behaal.

Ook HS Tygerberg het met ’n Bolandse eweknie afgereken toe hy in Parow HS Swartland met 24-8 die kous oor die kop getrek het. HS Bellville was deur middel van

sewe drieë met 47-7 heeltemal te sterk vir De Kuilen, terwyl HTS Bellville ewe maklik 27-0 teen Monumentpark gewen het.

In die Tygerbergstreek se eerste interskole-kragmeting hierdie seisoen het President en J.G. Meiring mekaar aanvanklik goed vasgevat en met die draaislag was J.G. Meiring net 13-10 voor.

Maar kort voor lemoentyd het sake ’n drastiese wending geneem toe ’n Presidentspeler met ’n rooikaart gestraf is. Met net 14 manne kon die tuisspan nie die pas volhou nie en is ’n pak slae van 49-24 toegedien.

Ander spanne aan die wenkant was Bellville-Suid (83-0 t Table View) en Fairmont (54-0 t Bosmansdam).

Maar Durbanville het met 10-58 in die stof gebyt teen Rondebosch.

Karting brothers compete in Rok Cup

urbanville’s karting brothers, Kyle and Charl Visser, travelled to Vereeniging for the Rok Cup races at the Laserfiche Raceway recently and young Kyle came home as the 2017 South African under10 Mini Rok champion. A delighted Kyle added his newly won national title to his 2015 Western Cape Cadet Championship title.

“It was a tough weekend,” Kyle admitted after ending sixth for the day, tied with Aqil Alibhai on fifth-placed points. “I qualified fourth and had a really tough race with Aqil in the first race and I stole fourth from sixth on the last lap. The second race was just as tough, but I went from seventh to fourth over the last two laps and then I went the wrong way at the end of race three to end eighth.

“The final was good and I had another big scrap with Aqil – he beat me in the race, but we tied on points for the day. But we won the under-10 Mini Rok championship and I am so proud!

“I would like to thank my folks and my brother Charl for all the help, my mechanic Zefrey and everyone else for everything they do, and I hope this title is a good reward for them!”

Elder brother Charl had a tough weekend as he struggled for pace in the MSA Academy Trophy. “I would rather congratulate Kyle today,” South Africa’s CIK-FIA Academy representative and reigning SA Maxterino champion admitted. “He drove so well as always and I am extremely proud of him.”

ugby is ’n sport wat “ontwikkel” en is geskik vir alle seuns. Grootte speel nie werklik ’n rol nie. Daar is vir elke seun ’n posisie waarin hy sal kan aanpas. In SuidAfrika is rugby in jou bloed!

Dít is hoe Pierre du Preez, ook bekend as Duppie, rugbyhoof van die Hoërskool Stellenberg in Bellville, sy passie vir die spel beskryf.

Hy is al 22 jaar en 6 maande betrokke by onderwys, waarvan 22 jaar by Stellies.

Hy was vir ses maande in ’n aflospos by sy alma mater, die Hoërskool Outeniqua op George, en is nou by Stellies gevestig.

“Ek het in 1989 gematrikuleer en onderwys by die Universiteit Stellenbosch gaan swot. Op skool het ek rugby, krieket, tennis

Unie-Milnerton het sy reeks goeie vertonings voortgesit deur die Victoriane met 31-30 te klop, terwyl Tygerberg-klub met 33-22 te sterk was vir Primrose.

Brackenfell het 10-43 vasgeval teen Valsbaai, die voorloper op die punteleer.

In die B-afdeling van die Superliga het Kuilsrivier goed stem dik gemaak teen Bellville en met 34-18 gewen, maar Kraaifontein is met 28-25 deur Collegians geklop.

In afdeling C het Elsiesrivier (32-22 t Macassar) en Scottsdene (21-19 t Hamediehs) aan die wenkant geëindig.

Die komende naweek se program (tuisspan eerste) is: Durbell t UWK, Belhar t Unimil, Pniël Villagers t Brackenfell, Noordelikes-Tygerberg t Primrose (afdeling A), Hands & Heart t Violets, Helderberg t Kraaifiontein, Villager t Bellville, St. George t Kuilsrivier (afd. B), Goodwood t Scottsdene (afd.

C).
