EXPIRY DATES ON FOOD ITEMS: CONSUMERS URGED TO CHECK LABELLING

t is always important to check the expiry dates of any food items one purchases, says Mayco member for safety and security, and social services, JP Smith.

Smith and the City’s Environmental Health Practitioners (EHP) Unit on Wednesday participated in a food safety inspection in Parow.

“The inspection was to look at both perishable and non-perishable food items sold at food premises,” Smith says.

He says it is very important for consumers to be careful when buying non-perishable foods that have already expired. “Buyers should know that they are buying the food

items at their own risk.

“Sell-by dates are more complicated and cannot be legally enforced.

“This is governed by national legislation (R146 labelling regulations). The expiry date on food is an advisory and the public need to decide whether to buy expired food or not.”

He says the national government is working on new labelling regulations and the City has recommended that food with expired dates not be allowed to be sold.

The City has also started updating the environmental health bylaw, Smith says.

Food vendors should have a certificate of acceptability (issued by the EHP Unit), which is monitored monthly.

The EHP Unit does food sampling of prod-

ucts at food premises, and the samples are then tested in their laboratory in Parow. The lab tests at least 120 food samples weekly.

This EHP Unit covers part of old Tygerberg and is one of 16 such EHP units across the City that do daily inspections of food premises.

“The inspections focus on high-risk foodstuff, which has to be done four times per year, including food safety and pest control.

The lower risks are warehouses storing nonperishables and they are inspected once a year,” Smith adds.

“Medium-risk venues include general dealers selling food and high-risk venues are your restaurants and fast food outlets, and these are inspected quarterly.”

“The City is advising the public to ask to see the labelling on repackaged products from informal traders. Products should be labelled.”

During the operation it was made clear that should sellers not have their repackaged products correctly labelled, they will get a warning from the EHP Unit and then action will be taken against them if no compliance is achieved.

Smith says that impoundment is an option.

“The owner of the shop will now be summonsed to court,” Smith says.

Smith also says they will look at what can be done in future when a fine must be issued but the owner of the store is not present.

ensehandel is ’n onderwerp waaroor nie baie gepraat word nie en as jy genooi word om verpleegsters wat indiensopleiding doen, daaroor toe te spreek, kan jy nie die geleentheid laat verbygaan nie.

Dít is hoe kapt. Kevin Williams, woordvoerder van die Parow-polisie, sy praatjie op Vrydag 8 September by die Tygerberghospitaal begin het.

“Die doel van die praatjie was om aan die verpleegsters te verduidelik dat mense hulle in verskillende vorme van slawerny deru ander bevind. Met die swak ekonomie glo mense baie maklik dat daar werksgeleenthede vir hulle in groot stede is en word maklik oorreed om hul huise te verlaat.

“Die boer van die Vrystaat is juis nou in die nuus, maar plaaslik hoor ons gereeld van plattelandse meisies wat met beloftes van werk vir die praatjies val en dan as slawe iewers gaan werk,” het Williams gesê.

Volgens hom word mense nie net vir arbeid gewerf nie, maar ook as seksslawe of vir hul organe.

“Meer as 72 miljoen mense oor die wêreld heen is in een of ander vorm van slawerny vasgevang. Vir die verpleegsters was die praatjie oor die oes van organe baie interessant, want hulle het gehoor mense skenk hul organe teen vergoeding,” het hy gesê.

Volgens Williams word sommige prostitute ook eers op die platteland gewerf met werksbeloftes in die stede.

“Wanneer hulle wel hier aanland, is dit heeltemal ’n ander storie. Waar moontlik, help ons diegene wat uit prostitusie wil ontsnap, maar die versoek moet van hulle kom.

“Ons kan hulle nie dwing om hul lewenswyse te verander nie.

“Die polisie en organisasies soos Mould Empower Serve (MES) in Bellville help hulle om hul lewens te verander met MES se programme en stuur hulle ná afloop van die programme terug na hul geboortedorp,” het hy gesê.

André skuur skouers met Hollywood­grotes AVRIL FILLIES

ie almal kan spog dat hulle in flieks saam met internasionale akteurs soos Sidney Poitier, Clint Eastwood, Michael Caine of Samuel L. Jackson opgetree het nie.

Die plaaslike akteur André Jacobs van Parow spog met dié prestasie – en hy is nie bietjie trots daarop nie!

“Ek het in 1977 ’n akteur geword nadat ek vier jaar in Londen gestudeer het. In Julie 1977 het ek huis toe gekom en by die destydse Kaapse Raad vir Uitvoerende Kunste (Kruik) as die spook in Hamlet opgetree.

“My tweede werk was in Johannesburg toe ek Owl in Winnie the Pooh gespeel het.

“Daarna het ek drie jaar vir die Transvaalse Raad van Uitvoerende Kunste (Truk) in die Engelse geselskap (ons was net drie) gewerk. Die jaar 1980 was ook die laaste jaar wat ek ’n salaris verdien het. Van toe af tot nou werk ek as vryskut – queller horreur! Beslis nie vir sissies nie,” lag hy.

Sy eerste televisierol was as Malcolm in SABC se Macbeth en sy groot deurbraak het in 1981 gekom toe hy in 10 episodes van die TV-reeks Brood vir my broer te sien was.

“In daai dae was daar net een kanaal en almal het dit gekyk – dit was onmiddellik ’n groot hit en my lewe het verander! Vir die eerste paar jaar was dit aangenaam met baie erkenning en werk ... tog te lekker. Jy het handtekeninge uitgedeel en vir foto’s geposeer,” vertel hy.

“Die lekker ding van akteur wees, is dat jy (meestal) kan kies hoe om jou tyd te benut – rondom jou werk, of gebrek aan werk.

“Om te praat van die mense met wie ek al saamgewerk het, gaan ’n l-a-a-ang lys wees, so ek gaan maar skim. In my vroeë dae was dit die kraggroep wat vir Truk gewerk het – akteurs soos Louis van Niekerk, Carel Trichardt, Francois Swart en Wilna Snyman.

Ek onthou ek en Eric Nobbs en Chris van Niekerk het saam gespeel vir Truk. Daar was vele ander,” sê hy.

“Die werk wat ek meeste geniet is voor ’n kamera – dit kan of ’n televisie- of filmrol

wees. Ek het (volgens my) ontpop as ’n goeie filmakteur. Verhoogwerk was altyd my groot liefde, maar dis amper verby – amper.

“Verhoogwerk neem te veel van jou tyd in beslag en kan ’n baie duur luuksheid wees.

“My laaste twee verhoogstukke was Wie’s bang vir Virginia Woolf saam met Sandra Prinsloo tydens Aardklop in 2013, en toe Mamet se Race in Edinburgh in 2014.

“Wat in ons dramawêreld verander het, is die feit dat ons omtrent 20 jaar gelede die professionele tydperk betree het wat film en TV betref. Ons mense, crew en spelers, en al die ander fasette van die televisie- of rolprentbe-

Ek wil nie eens praat oor al die wonderlike en talentvolle plaaslike spelers met wie ek ook skouers geskuur het nie! Ons het wêreldklas-spelers sommer hier op ons drumpel in die Kaap.

“Dis hoekom almal deesdae hul flieks in Kaapstad en omgewing kom skiet, want die regisseurs bespaar duisende rande met die dollar-rand-wisselskoers.”

Attorneys to draft free wills During National Wills Week until 15 September, the public will get a chance to have a basic will drafted by an attorney free of charge.

The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) advises all citizens to have a legally sound will, as it allows one to state who should inherit one’s assets and property.

ie Parow-polisie en die Parow-gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum (GPF) het verlede Dinsdag ’n gesamentlike vergadering by die Laerskool Parow-Noord gehou om terugvoer te gee oor misdaadstatistiek en nuwe projekte wat aangepak gaan word.

Op dieselfde vergadering het die Parowpolisie ook die publiek ingelig oor sy veldtog om die publiek meer bewus te maak oor die veiligheid van almal in blou.

Volgens kapt. Kevin Williams, woordvoerder van die Parow-polisie, is die sterftes van polisiebeamptes aan en van diens kommerwekkend en moet iets daaromtrent gedoen word.

“Ek doen ’n beroep op alle gemeenskappe om standpunt in te neem en seker te maak dat misdadigers en polisie-moordenaars aan die pen ry. Ons het te hard baklei vir

ons demokrasie vir misdadigers om wetstoepassers voor die voet af te maai,” het Williams gesê. Hy het ’n beroep gedoen op die publiek om die polisie te help om die skuldiges te laat boet.

“Geregtigheid vir elke man en vrou in blou wat op ’n onnatuurlike manier gesterf het, moet nou geëis word,” het hy gesê.

Die sowat 20 polisie-afgevaardigdes wat die vergadering bygewoon het, het beloof om te help om die skuldiges wat misdade teenoor polisielede pleeg, vas te trek.

Die GPF het ook selfone aan die sektorbestuurders van die polisie oorhandig sodat daar beter gekommunikeer kan word met die polisie, die GPF en die gemeenskap.

“Goeie kommunikasie tussen al die rolspelers sal verseker dat ons Parow en omliggende gebiede onder ons polisiekantoor help om misdaad uit te roei,” het hy gesê.

WAT DIE HART VAN VOL IS

Die gesig van ’n alkoholis wat bly spook

Ek het vandeesweek in die gesig van alkoholisme gekyk. ’n Gesonde, hardwerkende, sogenaamd “ordentlike” man, maar vasgevang in die greep van drank.

Hier is dié geloof onder ouskoolmense dat jy nié ’n alkoholis is as jy nog ’n werk of vrou of huis het nie.

Min besef en verstaan dat jy kan funksioneer en steeds ’n positiewe rol in die samelewing vertolk terwyl jy hopeloos etanol-afhanklik is.

Só ook hierdie gerespekteerde man voor my, wat nie besef dat hy eintlik al klassifiseerbaar is nie.

Hoewel ek geen dokter is nie, is iemand wat élke dag van die week drink – hetsy ’n “slaapdop”, om “af te koel”, ’n sogenaamde “sundowner”, en, en, en ... – myns insiens al klaar so diep in die bottel dat omdraaikans maar gering is.

Die oomblik as jy ook nie meer nee dankie kan sê vir ’n glasie ietsie nie, het jy al klaar probleme, meen Lekedokter Ekke ook.

Daar is min “Ek wens ek kon soos jy wees en net lagplooitjies, nee dankie sê vir vertel hy en die hare is drank,” my.

Sy oudste broer is doodgesteek toe hy 15 was – dié broer was ook die broodwinner.

Sy ma het agt kinders alleen grootgemaak op pap, en pap, en ... pap (sonder suiker, daarom drink hy vandag nog ses lepels suiker in sy koffie, want hy kán).

Hoe ánders sou sy lewe uitgedraai het as die dobbelsteentjie anders geval het? wonder ek. En wat is nou eintlik die verskil tussen sý swaarkry en enigiemand anders s’n?

“Ek wens ek kon ophou drink,” sug hy.

Dan skink hy vir hom nog ’n whisky.

Officers of the law­lessness On the morning of 30 August I was gobsmacked to see a black 4X4 police vehicle that had stopped in the road on the corner of Teddington and De Lange streets near the SARS office in Bellville. The policemen and women got out of the vehicle, stood on the road while chatting and then, with the exception of the driver, walked across the road.

Considering their tardiness there was definitely no emergency.

A fellow pedestrian related her interaction with another policeman who had parked his vehicle on a red line in the same area, inconveniencing other motorists.

Despite her being civil he resorted to calling her a ‘lazy housewife’ and then told her to ‘f@#% off’.

These officials again demonstrated that the law does not apply to them.

With their attitude and shameful behaviour I pray that my path never crosses theirs.

Waarom sny Stad nie gras in winter?

Tans is die gras van die parke en sypaadjies in ons omgewing weer baie lank.

Ek het die aangeleentheid na my wyksraadslid, Brendon van der Merwe, verwys.

Sy antwoord was dat die Stad Kaapstad nie gras in die wintermaande sny nie.

Dis volgens my ’n sinlose besluit, aangesien gras juis in die wintermaande vinnig groei wanneer dit nat is.

In die somermaande groei gras as gevolg van die droogte nie so vinnig nie en

behoort dit dan nie eintlik gesny te word nie. Ek het Van der Merwe hieroor gevra, maar ek het tot nou toe geen antwoord ontvang nie.

Die lang gras lyk vir my onooglik en ek vra dat die Stad Kaapstad spoedig iets hieraan doen.

Kudos to the City of Cape Town The City of Cape Town has again managed to raise the bar as it pertains to our financial performance.

The latest statistics for the 2016/17 financial year show that we achieved a capital spend of approximately 92.8% of our R6.4 billion capital budget – up from about 89% in the previous financial year and just over 80% in the 2013/14 financial year. In addition, the capital budget for the previous financial year was the largest that we’ve had over the past five years.

This achievement is as a result of highly skilled, passionate and dedicated members of staff and project managers. We have worked hard to overcome some project management challenges over the past year and it is paying off. The extra transparency that we’ve brought into our systems, and adjusting our processes to ensure that projects are strategically linked and tender ready prior to being included on the budget, have all contributed to better efficiency in the City. This is important as we are not simply driving expenditure percentages, but have key targets. A very small percentage of our capital projects have been delayed, largely due to community dynamics or violence in some areas.

Our financial performance

shows that our investment in and maintenance of infrastructure is solid, that our service delivery projects are on track, and that the money is being spent where it is needed. It demonstrates that we have the expertise and good governance structures to enable us to spend the money appropriately in the first place.

Beoordelaars se negatiwiteit skok Die Tygerberg-eisteddfod vier vanjaar sy 70ste bestaansjaar.

Vir dekades lank verskaf dit nie net vermaak op talle terreine nie, maar dit is ook ’n wonderlike platform vir talentvolle jongmense om hierdie talente uit te bou.

As ’n ouer van kinders wat reeds etlike jare met die eisteddfod te doen het, het twee kategorieë vanjaar erg teleurgestel – die tweespraak en gedramatiseerde prosa.

Nee, ek is nie teleurgesteld in die kinders se optredes nie – hulle het hul kant gebring.

Dit was twee spesifieke beoordelaars wat werklik belaglike punte gegee het.

Om net ná die Julie-skoolvakansie op te tree, behels dat hierdie kinders ure en ure in die vakansie moes oefen, en ouers, sowel as drama-afrigters, kosbare tyd moes opoffer om almal slaggereed te kry.

Ek het ’n wye spektrum van kategorieë aanskou en nêrens het ek gevoel die kinders word erg te na gekom of baie onregverdig beoordeel nie, buiten bogenoemde kategorieë.

Kinders wat in die verlede uitstekend gevaar het, kon nou nie eens 90% of in sommige gevalle 80% behaal nie.

Die manier waarop die vroulike beoordelaar na die

tyd voor die hele gehoor met die kinders gepraat het, was hartverskeurend.

Hulle het soos lammers ter slagting voor haar gestaan.

Sy het geen positiewe ding te sê gehad nie, net kritiek – en dit meestal oor plasing op die verhoog en dinge wat uitsluitlik in opdrag van ervare en gerespekteerde drama-afrigters uitgevoer is.

Die eisteddfod behoort beoordelaars met groot omsigtigheid te kies. Van hierdie kinders wil nooit weer in hierdie kategorieë deelneem nie. Dit is ’n groot jammerte, want in plaas daarvan dat hul drome vlerke gekry het, het ’n buitengewoon streng manlike en vroulike beoordelaar hul vlerke so te sê geknip.

En dis nie net ek wat so voel nie – die ouers was almal geskok en uiters teleurgesteld.

Ons praat hier van jong kinders wie se selfbeeld nog gevorm word. Asseblief, kies beoordelaars wat regverdig is en wat nie die kinders verneder en belaglike lae punte gee nie. Die eisteddfod se goeie naam is beslis hierdeur geknou.

Wie sal nou weer wil deelneem as jy nie net tyd en geld moet bestee nie, maar jy boonop jou swak punt aan die skool moet oordra en dan weet almal daarvan – maats, onderwysers en ouers. Dis mos dan veel beter om net nooit weer deel te neem nie!

A full house is expected for the quarter-final event as the top 24 entrants compete for a place in the final stages. The community is urged to be at Jackson Hall to cheer them on.

They will perform on stage before a live audience, accompanied by a band. The judges will be focusing on vocal technique, song interpretation, stage presence and audience response. The show will commence at 20:00 and there is no entry fee.

Only 12 will be selected to go through to the semi-finals, which will take place at SunExhibits, GrandWest, on Monday 18 September. The final six will battle it out for the title of OMJ Winner 2017 at SunExhibits, GrandWest, on 20 September.

Clerk’s service among the top in province A

n Eerste River clerk with a big heart and an even bigger service-oriented attitude.

This is Denver Swanepoel, helpdesk clerk at Karl Bremer Hospital’s (KBH) Emergency Centre, who recently brought joy to his facility and the Northern Tygerberg Substructure by winning a bronze award in the 2017 Western Cape Government Staff Service Excellence Awards.

The ceremony was held at Kelvin Grove in Newlands last month.

Swanepoel was chosen for the award by a panel of adjudicators selected by provincial top management.

Swanepoel’s job at the hospital is to ensure that patients waiting for assistance are attended to fairly and promptly and, most importantly, are informed of the waiting process of the hospital.

Conference to go the distance T

he Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) will hold its first South African conference tomorrow and Friday, during the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon week.

Key stakeholders from around the world will participate in the conference, which will give African and South African roadrace organisers, local governments, municipalities and federations the opportunity to listen to and learn from experts in the field of road races and trail events. Creating economic appeal, sports tourism, events marketing and adherence to international standards will all be addressed by leaders in the field.

AIMS is a member-based organisation of more than 400 of the world’s leading distance races in over 100 countries and territories.

It endeavours to cultivate and promote distance running throughout the world, and works with the International Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF) on all topics relating to international road races, while also sharing knowledge and expertise within the association. Local conference delegates will be able to engage and network with organisations from around the world while sharing in the latest findings from the organisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, Africa’s first IAAF Gold Label marathon.

Janet Welham, race director of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, says: “There are many criteria to having a successful race, and this conference will cover key aspects of putting together a spectacular event, and showcase Africa as the top destination in which to compete.”

AIMS president Paco Borao will open the conference and will be joined by Aleck Skhosana, Athletics South Africa (ASA) president, Alessio Punzi, IAAF road-running manager, Anroux Marais, Western Cape Government minister of cultural affairs and sport, Dr Laurine Platzky, Western Cape Government deputy director, and many other highly esteemed presenters.

The conference will provide delegates with the opportunity to witness first-hand how the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has become an iconic city marathon by enabling them to be a part of all planned activities over the course of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon week and weekend.

ith little wind and few hills, the 2017 West Coast Express was bound to come down to a bunch sprint, and that’s exactly what happened, with Evan Carstens (Team Giant) outsprinting the field to claim the victory in a time of 1:51:31 on Sunday. Teammate Bradley Gouveris finished second, with Shameeg Salie (Alfa Bodyworks) coming in third.

The race, held in idyllic conditions, was the first road race of the PPA Vida Spring League (a series of eight events including five road races, two criteriums, a hill climb and a time trial). So it was a bunch of hungry riders who lined up on the starting line, eager to get some points on the scoreboard.

There were a number of attacks along the

route, with a few riders getting dropped on the only real climb of the day towards Mamre, but the bunch predictably stayed together, culminating in an exciting bunch sprint, with Carstens emerging victorious. The win makes it a two-for-two victory for Team Giant as Bradley Gouveris had won the Bestmed Makro Cycle Tour the day before.

Dubbed the fastest, flattest race on the calendar, this year’s race certainly lived up to its name, with the front bunch averaging just short of 42km/h. “It was a great race.

We were meant to be riding for Bernard Esterhuizen, but things didn’t work out that way coming into the final straight, so he ended up leading me out for the win. We’ve had a great start to our season and look forward

to tackling the big Classics coming up,” says Carstens.

The second bunch on the road, which included the leading ladies, was unfortunately sent on the incorrect route, which meant they had to do their sprint for the win earlier than anticipated. Courteney Webb (UCT Cycling) crossed the line first, with Susan Melmed and Liezel Jordaan finishing in second and third places respectively.

From the elites to the first-timers, the 2017 West Coast Express, organised by the Outriders Cycle Club, presented cyclists with a great challenge on a perfect Cape Town day.
