P

arow Centre has jumped in to help 112 people, including 25 children and eight babies, who were left homeless when their wendyhouses burnt to ashes in the early hours of Sunday 17 December in Elsies River.

The community has come out en masse to support their neighbours, most of whom lost everything in the fire that burnt the Gaba Village informal settlement in Leonsdale to the ground.

“Elsies River is part of our shopper community, and we want to show our support in their time of need,” says Parow Centre marketing manager, Esley Solomons.

The Leonsdale Civic Centre has since been turned into a temporary refuge for the survivors, and donations of all kinds have started streaming in.

Local ward councillor, Franchesca Walker, told TygerBurger: “The families will be receiving their new structures on Tuesday and continued support will be given to them. Even though these families went through a traumatic experience, their morale is good and positive and their spirits are high.”

Walker says that on Sunday morning at around 03:00 she received a call from a resident reporting the fire. Eighteen shacks burnt to the ground.

Derrick Wilschut succumbed to smoke inhalation and passed away after trying to assist neighbouring residents in their wendyhouses as the fire gutted the area.

“The people lost all their belongings.

It’s so sad – a week before Christmas.”

She says the City’s Fire and Rescue Services were on the scene in a flash.

“I applaud the quick response from the fire department. My heart breaks to see how my community is at a loss. I consoled many, and I could not contain my tears. This tragic disaster has brought the community together. Many people rallied to help.”

Walker says the Elim Night Shelter has also assisted greatly in sheltering the displaced, and there are a number of volunteers assisting at the civic centre.

he problems with a building operation in Parow are finally being resolved.

This operation, in the parking area directly alongside McIntyre Place on the corner of King Edward and Picton streets in Parow, was investigated by the building inspector from the City of Cape Town’s Department of Development Management on Friday 8 December.

“During the past six months we wrote letters to the City to complain and spoke to the builders on site about the hazardous situation for the tenants, but to no avail. I am sure if TygerBurger sends in an enquiry we will have a calm festive season,” said Colleen Dowling, HR coordinator at AMT Works in Picton Street.

According to her there was no permanent health and safety representative on site and she was allowed to walk on the site without wearing a hard hat or safety shoes.

“To top it all, the builders contaminated the road and both sidewalks with rubble, building materials and vehicles, causing us to either drive around the block or dodge the hazardous objects lying in the road. We have to utilise the pavements to get to our transport,” she said.

“The entrance to our building is not always accessible due to debris lying haphazardly all over. This means we have to be very accurate when driving in and out of the parking area to avoid damage or any incidents. They grind concrete in the road and on the pavement next to our building, causing dust, immaterial of the danger involved to vehicles or pedestrians,” Dowling said.

Her biggest concern was the absence of any form of safety measures being taken in case of an incident like fires, particles entering pedestrians’ eyes as they walk past, or discs flying off in all directions.

“Another point of concern is the hygiene. Due to them placing their materials on very high piles in the road, they have created an opportunity for vagrants or others to utilise the pavement for their excrement. When we arrive in the morning we have to miss faeces with little balls of toilet paper on top, and the stench is shocking. The road is closed at their will, also causing undue stress,” she said.

On questioning some of the builders regarding this issue, she was informed that they have a waiver.

“I requested a copy and was informed they had to get permission to hand me a copy. This I disapprove of, as we are a company and have operated as such for the past 17 years in this building. At no time were we consulted about road closures, or to make matters worse, our parking, which is sometimes totally impossible to enter or leave due to their bad planning and building operations that, to an observant eye, do not seem to have leadership,” she said.

“The building inspector instructed the removal of all material within the road reserves. There is a small area of less than 5m² on the pavement where some building material is being stored. It is neatly stacked and does not influence the pedes-

trian movement on the pavement at all.

The overall appearance of the construction site has been addressed and is generally acceptable,” Mamkeli says.

“The contractor, however, is in the process of applying for the necessary hoarding permit. Furthermore, the building inspector also had discussions with the complainant and she was satisfied that the complaint was addressed.”

Thanks to caring strangers A resident of Huis Uitsig in Parow North, who wishes to remain anonymous, was doing the last of her Christmas shopping at Checkers in N1 City on Thursday 14 December when she fell ill in the shop. She wants to thank the people who assisted her and got her safely back to Huis Uitsig.

“I was standing in the queue waiting to be served by the cashier when I felt ill. I can remember that in front of me was a woman in a navy blue dress with white dots and I was thinking to myself that all the fashion of my young days is coming back again,” she says.

She cannot recall what happened next, only that she tapped the woman in the navy blue dress on the arm and asked her to help her sit down or leave the shop.

“I remember her asking me if she must

pay for my groceries in my trolley and, trusting her, I asked her to take the money out of my purse and then I passed out.

“When I regained consciousness I was lying in front of the cashiers and a Mr and Mrs Brits from Parow were taking care of me. Mr Brits was holding my hand and comforting me while the supervisor was asking for a wheelchair to assist me,” she says.

According to her she withdrew money from the ATM before entering Checkers and her money was still in her purse.

“I just want to thank everyone who helped me, especially the woman in the navy blue dress, and I regret not having her contact details to thank her personally.

Hopefully she reads TygerBurger and will see my letter of thanks,” the grateful woman says.

“We are doing this because we feel we need to give back to the community, and we are fortunate enough to be in a position to do this,” says Fischer.

“We have several causes that we focus on.

However, we take on just about anything, from clothing for premature babies, to blankets for babies, to Santa shoe boxes for an old age home, to jerseys for dogs. We also do fun things for children, like knitted chickens with Easter eggs in them, and comfort dolls for traumatised children. We also assist in disaster areas, such as when there were the fires in Hout Bay and Knysna, as well as in Cape Town when someone’s house/dwelling burns down, we provide blankets and clothing as much as we can.”

She runs the organisation from her store room, kitchen and dining room, and everything is coordinated through the Facebook group. “Each one brings something to the group. Some knit, some crochet, and others give donations. We also have an old age

During the past two months we handed out donations to the Tygerberg Hospital, and approximately 20 blankets will be handed over to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League. On Saturday 16 December we handed over Christmas boxes filled with toiletries and some knitted and crocheted goodies and a blanket to each resident in the Lotus River Place old age home,” she says.

“We welcome any donations, especially of wool. We have lots of members who are eager to knit or crochet, but don’t always have the means to purchase the wool themselves,” Fischer says.

Cause We Can recently handed over 110 Santa shoe boxes to the Lotus River old age home. “This is a government home, so these people have almost nothing and are often forgotten members of our society. We were trying to get sponsors for magazines to put into the boxes, but were not successful.

Hopefully we’ll be able to get the magazines for our next event,” she says.

Testament wat nie deeglik beplan is nie, kan onnodige belasting en ander kostes vir die boedel en die erfgename van die oorledene tot gevolg hê.

Wat hieronder volg, is net enkele aspekte wat jy in gedagte moet hou ten einde belasting sover moontlik te beperk.

Sodra die waarde van jou boedel R3,5 miljoen oorskry nadat laste en boedelkostes afgetrek is, is boedelbelasting betaalbaar teen ’n koers van 20% op die gedeelte bo R3,5 miljoen.

Bemakings aan jou gade is egter vrygestel van boedelbelasting in jou boedel. Dus, as jy jou hele boedel aan jou gade bemaak, of alles

wat meer is as R3,5 miljoen, sal jou boedel nie aanspreeklik wees vir boedelbelasting nie, ongeag hoe groot jou boedel ook al is.

Afhangende van hoe groot die bedrag is wat aan die langslewende gade bemaak word, kan die gevolg wees dat die boedelbelasting-aanspreeklikheid nou net uitgestel word tot by die dood van die langslewende gade.

Omdat mense se omstandighede verskil, is dit onmoontlik om in ’n rubriek soos hierdie met ’n “beste oplossing” vorendag te kom om die minste moontlike boedelbelasting te betaal. Die doel is eerder om lesers bewus te maak hiervan sodat elkeen sy unieke om-

standighede met sy raadgewers kan bespreek.

Nog ’n aspek wat in gedagte gehou moet word, is inkomstebelasting. Neem die volgende eenvoudige voorbeeld: ’n Man wat ’n vrou en twee klein kinders agterlaat, bemaak al sy bates aan sy vrou. Hoewel die weduwee ’n groot gedeelte van die inkomste wat gegenereer word deur die bates wat sy geërf het, spandeer aan die kinders, betaal sy inkomstebelasting op al die inkomste.

As die man in sy testament ’n trust vir elke kind gestig het, sou elke kind vir belasting op sy/haar eie inkomste aanspreeklik gewees het.

Delays can be expected on the following roads Construction activities at various road infrastructure projects will shut down from 15 December 2017 until 9 January 2018, the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) says.

The department is busy with numerous projects in the area, including the upgrading and addition of a third lane in both directions on the N1 between Plattekloof Road and the Old Oak Interchange.

According to the department, motorists can expect delays on the following roads where there will be one-lane closures: Cogmanskloof Bridge (R60 near Ashton), the R44 near Gouda, Annandale Road near Stellenbosch, and the R44 between Porterville and Piketberg.

Traffic accommodation plans such as temporary signage, lighting, and flagmen and -women will be in place for safety reasons and to facilitate the flow of traffic.

Motorists are encouraged to take note of the contact number on project signboards for queries and roadside emergencies. “We call on drivers to always obey the rules of the road. Only overtake when it is safe to do so.

“Plan your route in advance to include stops at safe places along the way. On long journeys, take a 10-minute break outside your vehicle every two hours.

A

local teacher is making a global impression.

Wendy Horn, principal of Protea Heights Academy in Brackenfell, is one of the 50 finalists in the running for the Global Teacher of the Year Award 2017.

The winner of this award, which is often referred to as the “Nobel Prize” for teaching, will receive $1 million, making it the largest prize of its kind.

“It’s both an exciting and humbling experience,” Horn says. “It is also a little bit daunting, knowing that educators will now look up to you to inspire, mentor and lead them.”

Horn, who specialises in maths and science teaching, lives in Boston and has been a teacher for over 20 years.

She previously worked for Settlers High School before heading to Protea Heights Academy, a maths and science focus school, which was established in 2015.

This isn’t Horn’s first brush with success.

She received the National Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching Science in March 2014, a few months after winning the Western Cape’s Teacher of the Year Award for Excellence in Teaching Science in 2013.

She believes her success is attributed to so many others in her life. “It is not possible to become an excellent teacher on your own,” she says, and credits the hard work of teachers who have shaped her and the hard work of learners in her classrooms.

Horn is clearly passionate about her job.

In a video recorded by the Western Cape Education Department in 2013 when she was announced as the top science teacher, Horn is seen excitedly talking about her

“It’s exciting to know you have an influence on the future by producing the scientists that are going to change the world,” she says.

Over 8000 applicants from 148 countries around the world applied for the award.

Horn is one of only two South African teachers who were chosen as finalists for the prestigious prize, the other being Majorie Brown from Roedean School in Johannesburg.

The winner will be announced in March 2018.

20 new rookies hit the roads Twenty new traffic officers will be watching the City’s streets with eagle eyes this festive season.

The new recruits received their certificates at a graduation ceremony on Friday 15 December after completing their studies and practical assessments. These rookies are the latest group of recruits to have completed the programme, six months after 30 others graduated. A selection process to whittle down the thousands of applications meant candidates had to complete written and physical assessments. This was followed by a round of interviews, medical examinations, criminal checks and reference checks.

“The learnership programme has made it possible for us to replenish staff numbers where officers have retired or resigned, but it is also an opportunity to increase the number of traffic officers in Cape Town,” says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security. “I also caution the public not to underestimate the rookies. At our recent annual awards, one of the 2016 graduates was a nominee for Officer of the Year after generating nearly 6000 cases, confiscating 168 cellphones and making 49 arrests in his first year on the job. That is the calibre of officer who is donning the uniform.”

Mother waves ‘magic wand’ for hospital ESMÉ ERASMUS

Durbanville mother, whose five-yearold son has been receiving regular chemotherapy for leukaemia at Tygerberg Hospital for the past two years, used her “magic wand” and asked for donations on her Facebook page to have just one single room at the hospital revamped.

Just two and a half weeks later, Benita Lotz has received enough donations to have not one, but three, of the ten single rooms at the hospital revamped.

While spending months with her son, Liam, in the children’s oncology ward at Tygerberg Hospital, she realised that no provision is made for parents.

“Parents are not allowed to sleep on a bed next to their ill children, and no ‘kangaroo beds’ are available.

“Parents coming from far, who want to stay with their child through the night, literally sleep on the floor.

“Not on a mattress – on the floor, on the actual floor,” she says.

“The bedside cabinets are in such a bad state that some of them have a piece of wire as a handle, while the cots in which the small children sleep look like something from a horror movie.

“Due to budget cuts in the health care departments, entire households are impacted by the tragic circumstances of the hospital – this while having to deal with a traumatic event that I can only describe as life changing.

“Nobody asks for this and no ill child deserves a broken-down cot in a broken-down room in a broken-down system,” she says.

This is not the first time Lotz has used her “magic wand” to improve the children’s

wards at Tygerberg Hospital. She previously raised money to donate bath plugs, toilet paper, cleaning products and basic personal hygiene products to the hospital.

She also organised a spring-cleaning day on 6 May at the children’s oncology ward to clean the bathrooms, children’s day ward and kitchen with the help of a handful of volunteers. They also donated steel cabinets to the hospital.

According to Lotz, she started to write about her day-to-day challenges on her Facebook page, after which her Facebook friends grew to 717.

When she asked for donations this time, people donated what they could, and soon she had R53 000 donated into the account of Sanbonani Holdings, a company specialising in medical, occupational therapy and physiotherapy products. Among these donations were two donations of R10 000 each.

“This is enough for new beds, kangaroo chairs, bedside cabinets, over-the-bed tables, mirrors, mattress covers, waterproof pillowcases and other smaller items for three rooms.

“There is now also enough money to have the rooms painted and for vinyl stickers to decorate the walls,” she says.

“More and more children are being diagnosed and need to be treated at Tygerberg Hospital, and the oncology ward is in dire need of new equipment.

“Auto Armour in Bellville has already tinted all the windows for us and we have already raised funds and made 16 new curtains to separate the beds so that each child and parent will have some privacy,” she says. She has also received a donation of new pillows.

Walker said this is a show of support to the affected families.

“What was heartwarming was when people outside Leonsdale and Elsies River came to give support. We had young children emptying their cupboards to bless others.”

Walker said it is suspected the fire was caused by a candle left unattended.

Elsies River police spokesperson, Captain Daphne O’Reilly, says that police were alerted to the fire and attended to the scene.

“On arrival a few wendyhouses were alight and the fire was spreading. Necessary assistance was called in to contain the fires.

“Derrick Wilschut (49) died on the scene.

An inquest docket was opened for investigation.”

Member of the provincial legislature, Reverend Dorothy Gopie, visited the scene together with clergymen to render their support and provide basic supplies to the families. Gopie and Walker also discussed how to create a sustainable relief mechanism for people in the ward in need of housing.

Huis toe, vir skaapboud en herinneringe Iewers in die middel van 2017 het ek al die jaar begin omwens. Nie omdat dit ’n besonder moeilike jaar was nie, of omdat die werk te veel was nie, of omdat daar een of ander diep rede daarvoor was nie.

Nee. In my geval het die een jaar sommerso binne-in die volgende een ingerol.

Soos ’n stuk kougom waarvan die suiker lánkal reeds uitgekou was, maar die gom nog elasties genoeg was om die kake aan die gang te hou tot nou. Só het ons klein spannetjie deur die feestyd van 2016 gewerk aan ons web-platform, terwyl die res van ons kollegas almal welverdiende verlof geneem het. ’n Persoonlik-gedrewe selfmarteling dus.

En die rede vir die besluit om nié die een jaar seremonieel met verlof “af te eindig” voordat die volgende een aangepak is nie, was en is nogal ietwat van ’n persoonlike tameletjie. Sien, waar ek vandaan kom – Upington, Noord-Kaap – is daar hierdie ding van “gaan huis toe”.

Soos in, jy kom op ’n jong ouderdom Kaapstad (of waar ook al anders) toe om te kom swot, maak klaar, kry werk, keer terug, of bly aan en begin werk. Dan sit jy die tradisie voort deur elke vakansie, of elke ander vakansie, of wanneer ook al iemand ’n groot verjaardag of troue het, of daar ’n geboorte of afsterwe was, om huis toe te gaan. Na jou ouerhuis toe.

Dis hoe alle Upingtonners – durf ek sê alle plattelandse kinders? – dit nog altyd gedoen het since time immemorial. Dis ons ding: gaan huis toe om van jou ma se lamsboud te eet op Kersdag. En die braaiery langs die swembad op Nuwejaarsdag. Die nimmereindigende gekuier, waatlemoen-etery, yskoue bier-drinkery, saamsingery (met my pa wat op sy trekklavier of orrel of kitaar begelei en my ma wat die lied “te hoog insit”), “Mary’s Boychild”, buurman Wallace wat pas uit die Kaap kom en sy gevlekte snoekbiltong (’n hele een, nét vir my pa) saambring. Hierdie is die dinge van huis toe gaan. En hier sit ek vandag en tik aan al my herinneringe. Met ’n hartjie wat brand om huis toe te gaan. Upington toe. Na my ma se huis toe. En dan onthou ek weer hoekom ek verlede jaar regdeur die feestyd gewerk het: Ek het nie meer ’n huis om na te gaan nie.

Daar teen die hoofpad in Kumkwatstraat in Lemoendraai, waar al my sweet en trane en grootwordgevoelens in die rooi stof vermeng lê, staan die huis wat myne was. My ma s’n – waar sy elke oggend verwoed die stof van ons skewe stoepie af gevee het (want my pa het nooit ’n erg aan ’n waterpas gehad toe hy dié stoepie gebou het nie); die groot boom waar ons gesin die groot tradisie begin het om liggies te hang, en dit nou ’n “ding” is – veral omdat dit so mooi lyk as dié soos ons, wat teen die hoofweg woon, dit doen.

Dis soos ’n stille, kleurvolle verwelkoming aan elke voertuig wat daar verbyry op sy tog deur of na Upington.

My pa. Sy liggies. My ma. Haar doek wat skeef hang. Die niggies, nefies. Die swart hond en sy ma, Tippie, met die blou tong. My pa se ou bruin Rover. Die plante wat teen wil en dank probeer groen lyk in die hitte. Ek onthou alles.

En ek kan nie huis toe gaan nie ...

So, ek sal maar Eersterivier toe, na my man en kinders toe. En weer die tafel dek vir hul aangesig, met liefde, skaapboud, en “Mary’s Boychild”.

Water supply has become an income stream It is interesting that the City of Cape Town (CCT) now needs to impose a drought charge based on my property value, while in the past year they made a fortune from me out of the inflated water and sewage charges – sewage that is calculated based on 100% of the water used over the water meter while everyone knows that most of us have been reusing everything possible in our gardens as far as possible.

And then they go as far as charging more per litre of sewage than per litre of water at certain scales.

If the CCT has a cash-flow shortage, they could simply start looking at the private use – the unnecessary use – of multiple vehicles transporting single people to the same site and the petrol account.

I am familiar with the situation of a Law Enforcement vehicle/traffic car that travels daily between Darling and Cape Town, let alone exceeding the speed limit, which is totally outside the jurisdiction of the CCT. Mamre is the end of their area, so that vehicle is travelling privately.

It is used privately in Darling and it does trips to drop off people in Atlantis and then returns.

If they can clamp down on matters such as these, then they will save R180 per day just in petrol.

If I can drive with my own vehicle to work every day, why can this person not do the same?

I therefore make the statement that the City does not have the funds in their cash flow for the provisioning of water, and they

already collected millions last year. They must just control their current wastage and spending.

If I need to pay a fee for the further wastage and supply of water to people who do not save or do not pay their bills, then I could just as well apply that same fee and drill a borehole on my property and control my water quality, as that is exactly what they intend doing with the money they collect from me, but they overcharge me for the same water to make further money from me.

It is my opinion that water supply is no longer a matter of delivering a service at the CCT, it is an income stream, and a massive one as well.

I can just see how they will suffer after this drought and when the dams are full again, as by then people would have adapted to using less water, and the City will simply sit with an oversupply, just like there is an oversupply of electricity at the moment.

When people buy less, the City of Cape Town makes less money.

Just before we hosted the Soccer World Cup, we were faced with this same crisis we are in now.

Millions were spent to investigate areas to develop wellfields.

We got a bumper season of rain before the World Cup and nothing was done to continue with the time and money that went into the above projects when the money was put aside to develop these wellfields, and now we must pay for the mining of water.

Verkeersdienste ook snags nodig Die bewering word gemaak (“Don’t drink and drive”, 13/11) dat daar “round the clock operations is.”

Vra maar nou enige buurtwaglid wat probeer om ’n verkeerspersoon ná middernag in die hande te kry of dit al gebeur het. Ek het die vraag ’n ruk gelede aan die munisipaliteit gestel en die antwoord was dat hulle nie ná middernag dienste verskaf nie. Dit wil sê daar is ’n paar padblokkades per jaar en niks ander verkeersdienste nie. En almal weet as jy dronk is, hou jy net van die groter paaie af.

Hulle beplan ook nie om dit binnekort in te stel nie. Die gevaarlikste dronk bestuurders en die grootste ongelukke gebeur juis in die oggendure.

Die reeds oorwerkte polisielede moet instaan by ongelukke – verkeersdienste kom nie eens daarvoor uit nie. Die syfers wat dus gegee word, is byna niksseggend. Meeste dronk bestuurders kom weg omdat daar nie dienste is nie.

Belastingbetalers verdien beter as dit.

Net een voertuig per voorstad ná 02:00 sal al klaar ’n verskil maak.

runk drivers, beware: You are now being targeted by a vehicle that can pull you over to test your alcohol level where you stand, and then send that information directly onto a mainframe where it is recorded.

Provincial minister for transport and public works, Donald Grant, on Friday 15 December unveiled the new Mobile Alcohol Evidentiary Unit as a further means to combat drunk driving.

The unit forms part of the province’s anti-drunk driving campaign, Operation #BoozeFreeRoads, and is a collaboration between Grant’s department and the Directorate for Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the police.

The new unit is a state-of-the-art, repurposed emergency services vehicle and the first of its kind in the country, which makes it possible to conduct on-the-spot alcohol checks to determine whether a driver is under the influence, while also increasing the likelihood of a successful prosecution.

On-the-spot testing makes it possible to release innocent suspects immediately, Grant says in a statement. It also means that no blood testing is necessary.

By removing the need for personnel to accompany suspects to distant testing centres, the technology also enables more Law Enforcement officials to be on duty at any time, he states.

“This new mobile unit is an exact duplicate of the existing infrastructure inside the Vangate Alcohol Evidence Centre (AEC), which is required when properly administering Evidentiary Breath Alcohol Testing (EBAT), commonly known as the Dräger breathalyser.

“The mobile unit has been repurposed at a cost of just over R400 000, and has been designed to meet the same prescribed standards of the Vangate AEC,” Grant states.

The unit also has video and sound recording capabilities, data-capturing computer programs streaming information back to the Vangate AEC, portable alcohol screening devices and road signage, as well as a water supply and generator.

The unit is currently being deployed on a pilot basis at various hotspots.

eing Santa Claus often means working long hours and having weird conversations with strange children, for earnings of as little as R200 a day.

According to Claire Cobbledick, head of core business at Gumtree SA, the call for all sorts of Santa Clauses is a hugely popular one currently listed on the classifieds site.

She reports that the ads calling for “a real bearded Santa Claus for a mall job”, “preferably an elderly gentleman with a real grey/white beard” who needs to be “good with kids as he will be posting with them in photographs”, are very popular.

Cobbledick says these receive an average of 100 views and between 20 and 40 replies.

“It’s probably the only job, among the hundreds of thousands advertised on the site, that requires you to be jolly or which sometimes prescribes the size of your waistline or can demand particular facial hair,” she says.

Santas are found everywhere – from malls to Christmas markets, charities, hospitals, private parties and even corporate functions, she says.

So what does a Santa Claus get paid for, besides having children sit on his lap and share their wish list?

According to her, the standard Santa Claus job description on Gumtree includes just this – listening to Christmas wishes – as well as chatting to shoppers about promotions and posing for photos with children.

According to Cobbledick, Santas will unfortunately never be rich.

“Santas usually have to work long hours in a hot suit for two weeks straight, including holidays, and the payments are mostly in the R250 to R500 per day range.”

Stay safe this festive season Despite the festive atmosphere and holidays, home and personal safety must be top of mind at all times, warns a security company.

“Whether you’re staying at home, or planning fun days out or short breakaways, it is important that precautions are taken to ensure you, your loved ones and your belongings are safe and secure,” says Verena Hulme, district manager for Cape Town North for Fidelity ADT Security.

“There are a number of practical and costeffective measures that can be taken to enhance home security.”

Hulme advises the following: . Look out for anything on the inside or outside of the boundary wall that could help a criminal easily climb into or out of the property, including low-hanging branches. . Trim back thick bushes, which provide hiding places for criminals. . Ensure that no valuables, or tools that could be used as weapons or to gain entry to the house or garage, are left in the garden or yard.

If you are entertaining at home, advise your guests not to leave any valuables in

their vehicles where they can be easily spotted from the outside.

Encourage guests to rather keep their valuables in the boot, or bring them inside.

This, says Hulme, is a general rule that can be applied whenever you are out and about. Should you be out for the day, there are a few simple checks that can be done before leaving home to secure the house from the inside.

“Ensure that all windows – fanlights included – are properly closed and locked. If no-one will be around until after dark, draw the blinds or curtains in such a way that noone can see inside.”

For anyone who will be away for a few days or more, Hulme has the following advice: . If the lights are not on a timer, have a trusted family member or neighbour visit the house daily to switch them on and off. . Ask them to open and close the curtains and blinds and to regularly remove any mail left in the postbox.

“Also, regardless of whether you will remain at home or be away, get in touch with your security company to test your alarm.”

No ‘Christmas box’ coercion With Christmas in only five days, residents should not be forced into giving “Christmas boxes” or bonuses to garbage collectors.

Residents are also warned to be aware of scam artists posing as staff of the City’s Solid Waste Department over the festive season. Residents should note that there is a policy in place that strictly forbids staff of the Solid Waste Department from asking residents for “Christmas boxes” and from soliciting donations.

City staff are appropriately remunerated and should not, under any circumstances, be asking residents for donations, according to a media release issued last week.

However, residents are free to give a voluntary donation if they wish. “If residents believe that excellent service has been provided, they are at liberty to give a voluntary donation to staff as a gesture of thanks and

goodwill,” says Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services, and energy.

Residents are urged to report any contraventions to the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089. Apart from the date, time and place, a vehicle registration number must be provided so that the alleged culprits can be identified. Residents can also report this to Wastewise.User@capetown.gov.za.

“Such reports will be investigated immediately. Where residents are willing to testify, the City will be able to prosecute offenders,” Limberg says.

“Residents should also be aware that certain opportunists attempt to pose as City staff at this time of the year. If residents suspect that the people who approach them are misrepresenting themselves, the matter should be reported to the police,” she says.

Owning the puck is about more than luck STEHAN SCHOEMAN t is the dream of Connor Gilbert (12) to one day play for the New York Rangers in the North America National Hockey League, and this goalie is hard at work to make this dream a reality.

The Eversdal Primary School learner was presented with the award for Western Province Peewee Goalie of the Year.

“My sister was doing figure skating and while supporting her, I would often see the ice hockey guys doing practice. It looked like fun and that is how I got into playing this

great sport.

“This has been a very good year for me.

I received my Western Province colours this year, which thus far is my proudest moment.

Being named the Peewee Goalie of the Year is very special,” says Connor.

On top of this achievement, he also bagged the Most Valuable Player trophy during an interprovincial tournament and received a silver medal at the national championships.

A recent ESPN study concluded that ice hockey is the most demanding team sport in the world. Only boxing was given a higher overall mark based on ESPN’s ten criteria:

“I train every Sunday from 08:30 to 11:00, which includes training by coaches and a match where my stats are recorded, and on certain Mondays when there is ice time available I attend practice from 18:00 to 20:30.

At home my dad throws a whole bucket of tennis balls at me and I catch or block them to practise my hand-eye coordination. I also do roller blading to maintain my balance, stamina and fitness levels.

“I just love this sport and I am really look-

ing forward to playing in the u.16 age group at the SA Nationals in Johannesburg from 24 to 30 June next year.

“I also have my sights set on making the South African team when I’m 16 and representing my country on the international stage.

“I believe that will give me the exposure to compare myself to the rest of the goalies on the world stage and hopefully one day play professional hockey in America.

“That is probably every player’s dream, but I am giving everything to make it in the big league,” says Connor.

HENNIE BOSMAN: NAMED NEW INTERNATIONAL CHAIRMAN OF KYOKUSHIN­KAN KARATE

A

fter dedicating 51 years of his life to karate, Hennie Bosman faces his biggest challenge yet as the new international chairman of Kyokushin-Kan Karate.

This was not the only honour to be bestowed upon Bosman as he was also promoted from shihan to hanshi, making him one of a very few elite karateka in the world with an eighth dan black belt.

This all happened at the recent Kyokushin-Kan Junior World Championships held in Tokyo, Japan.

Bosman will go down in history as the very first South African-born hanshi of Kyokushin-Kan Karate, as well as the first international chairman.

Scottish-born legend Len Barnes, who lived in South Africa for many years, was the first hanshi in the country.

“I am very excited and nervous in the same breath. As international chairman it is my duty to travel the world and build relationships in bettering karate. I was the chairman of Africa for many years, but this is a massive step for me and one that I will tackle head on in the new year,” says Bos-

man from Welgemoed.

Bosman is accustomed to travelling and during the past year has hosted seminars in the USA, Russia, India, Costa Rica and various African countries.

With his wealth of experience and knowledge, Bosman remains a student of the sport.

“I travel every year to Japan to take part in seminars and training camps to keep abreast of techniques and share them with our local karateka.

“Next year is going to be busy with a lot of travelling and spending time away from my family. It is not ideal but my family supports me, for which I’m thankful. Although the reality is still sinking in, I am the same old Hennie. I love working with children, and seeing them develop and grow as people gives me great pleasure.”

Bosman already has bookings to travel to Zimbabwe, the USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, Iran and Switzerland next year.

“One day in the distant future when I retire, I want to sit back and say I not only made a positive contribution in growing the sport, but I helped people reach their potential,” says Bosman.
