PAROW: RESIDENTS COMPLAIN ABOUT NOISE FROM CHURCH, DAY AND NIGHT

Church cacophony AVRIL FILLIES

T

he church above the premises of La Ponta Rosa Bakery on the corner of Andries Pretorius Street and Voortrekker Road in Parow is not associated with the Life Mending Church, a Congolese congregation, but to the Powerful Hand of God Ministries. Therefore the noise complaints are not applicable to them. This is the response of Apostle Caleb Calebs, leader of the Life Mending Church in

Voortrekker Road. “Our church occupies the premises above Capitec in Voortrekker Road and we have signage to direct people to the church. The church on the corner of Andries Pretorius Street and Voortrekker Road is used by three different churches and they allegedly use our church’s name,” says Calebs. Residents living opposite the church in the Dorosa Court complex and business owners in the area have been complaining since January 2016 about the disturbance of

the peace during both the day and at night. According to Werner Geldenhuys, senior technician: specialised environmental health, the limit of noise levels for the Parow district is 60dBA during the daytime from 06:00 to 22:00 and 50dBA at night-time from 06:00 to 22:00. “Currently the noise level for praise and worship at the church is 75dBA and 20 to 60dBA during amplified speech. A written instruction was served on 19 January for ceasing a disturbing noise,” Geldenhuys says.

The unit received an emailed response on 1 February from a representative of the church, indicating that the church would adhere to the noise restrictions. “I wrote back to the church to advise what the allowed limit for the Parow district is and requested feedback to this by Friday 9 February. If non-compliance is confirmed with a follow-up measurement, this matter will be handed to the prosecutions office,” he says. V To page 2.
