Residents rage over rats AVRIL FILLIES

esidents of the Erica Court complex in Wynne Street, Parow, are fuming over rats which they say are taking over the complex, as well as crime that is allegedly being committed in plain sight of Law Enforcement officers.

The City of Cape Town has received complaints about the rodents in the complex before, and on Friday 16 March a second inspection was carried out by the local envi-

ronmental health office in Parow.

“A few years ago the City received a similar complaint and that was attended to. This complaint has therefore been treated as a new complaint,” says Siyabulela Mamkeli, Mayco member (Central).

The complainant also alleged that the rats are probably coming from shops in the vicinity of the flats, and the environmental health office visited the shops as well.

“Food premises are routinely visited at least twice a year,” he says.

‘City must stick to water restrictions to survive’ DESIRÉE RORKE

ape Town is currently beating the drought, but will have to stick to the severe restrictions to survive it whol-

ly.

This is the outlook for 2018, sketched by deputy mayor of Cape Town, Ian Neilson, at the annual business dinner of the Tygerberg Business Chamber last Thursday evening.

Held at Durbanville Hills Winery, Neilson presented a frank but informative overview of the crisis, accompanied by scientific and statistical data.

“What we as a city did in the last couple of months is nothing short of remarkable.

We halted our water consumption from 1200ML/day to 600ML/day and thereby averted disaster,” he said.

“However, further reduction is needed to below 450ML/day, due to the fact that the 500ML/day target was not met between December and February.” This, according to Neilson, is why Level 6B restrictions were imposed. Further measures are being put in place to reduce demand, including demand management devices, flow restrictors and aggressive pressure management.

“If we succeed in meeting our target, we can avoid having to go to Level 7 restrictions,” he said.

The current drought, unprecedented as it is, was caused by the worst rainfall figures in 100 years.

“Our current water system is and always has been heavily dependent on rainfall, and has thus shown a progressing downward trend from 2014 to 2018 due to declining rainfall figures.”

At the same time in 2014, the overall storage level of the Bergriver, Theewaterskloof and Voëlvlei dams were on average at 78%.

Currently it is at 23%.

But will it ever rain again? Yes, said Neilson, referring to 16 different climate models projected by various scientists.

“Rainfall in Cape Town is variable. Wetter and drier years are common, but the above models have predicted an overall decline in rainfall for Cape Town in future, with more dry years and fewer wet years ahead,” he said.

tion is currently at 511ML/day, with a 23% dam storage level and a weekly dam level change of -0.6%.

Neilson was positive that Cape Town will get through the drought and avoid Day Zero, if residents keep to the current restrictions.

He said dam levels would not drop to below 13.5% this year if restrictions are adhered to and assuming another low rainfall year.

“We are in a safe zone right now, providing that we keep our consumption levels steady until the rains come.

A campaign with the slogan “50 litres a day keeps Day Zero away” will be launched next month to enforce this message.

In the meantime the City has embarked on several water augmentation programmes.

“In the past we have always relied on surface water to supply us, but we were forced to change our strategy going forward, finding alternative water supplies. This will also ensure that should we ever go through such a drought again, the City wouldn’t need to impose this type of water restrictions again.”

Augmentation schemes, however, are far more expensive than rainwater run-off.

Temporary desalination, for instance, costs the City R35 per kilolitre of water, as opposed to the normal R5 per kilolitre of rainwater.

In terms of augmentation programmes, Atlantis is already supplying all its own needs, thanks to groundwater extraction.

Neilson said it will take two to four years to establish permanent desalination plants.

“This year we aim to stretch our water supply with temporary desalination projects, to keep us going until the rains come.”

Water from the Palmiet River is also being discharged from Rockview Dam towards the Steenbras Dam, to augment supply.

Neilson said that it is crucial to keep water restrictions in place for now, as the City could still be at risk in 2019.

“The rainfall figures for 2018 will be very crucial in this regard. But this is not in our hands, but consumption is. We therefore have to keep up what we are doing. As a City we cannot afford the economic and social impact that will come with Day Zero.”

Ravensmead police are appealing to the community for information about a 63-yearold man who was knocked over by a truck on the corner of De la Rey and Pinedene roads on Friday 9 February.

The incident occurred at around 19:00. Police were alerted telephonically by a resident who saw the man lying in the road.

“The man was rushed to Tygerberg Hospi-

tal where he later succumbed to his injuries and died,” says Ravensmead police spokesperson, Captain Odwa Makupula.

A case of reckless and negligent driving has been registered at Ravensmead Police Station.

non-profit company based in Belhar, Massive Impact, has made getting one’s driver’s licence that much easier by launching a driving lesson package as a means to uplift the public, as well as independent driving instructors.

Founder and director, Natalie Arrow, tells TygerBurger these packages are valued at R3000, but only cost R499 through their organisation. This money is then used to fund a dialysis patient.

Arrow says this initiative was launched after her mother was diagnosed with kidney failure. “She [her mother] had no medical aid at the time, had to be medically boarded from work and didn’t qualify for a transplant because of how old she was and how far along the kidney damage was.

After meeting with a nephrologist at N1 City Hospital, we found out how bad things really are for kidney patients in the country. Between Groote Schuur and Tygerberg hospitals, which are the only two government hospitals in Cape Town providing dialysis, they can only accommodate 500 to 600 patients. The demand however is a lot higher, and thus a lot of patients are shown away. They then have to either find private hospitals and pay the full amount or go home to live out this death sentence.”

She says they also found that the two main causes of kidney failure are hypertension and type 2 diabetes. The concerning part for Arrow was that many people do not have the resources or funds to see a specialist, which was what drove her and her husband, Benito Arrow, to start the non-profit company.

Their aim is to eventually open a dialysis clinic. “This would of course first require us to create awareness of the causes of kidney disease and how big the problem is. We hope to educate everyone about how dangerous hypertension and diabetes are.”

The NPC was founded in November 2017 and now comprises various funds, much like a medical aid fund, for which members pay an annual fee and receive certain benefits over time and upon maturity. In terms of the driving lesson package, Arrow says the company saw the need for such a package as many people cannot afford the full cost of a driving lesson package.

“This really motivated us to keep the initiative going, because it’s helping so many members of the public. We’d love to be able to sponsor more patients, but it’s very pricey. Dialysis costs R1000 per session. The State covers about 600 kidney patients, but what happens to the rest who do not have the resources or access to medical aid?”

Fame is part of the soapie territory AVRIL FILLIES

B

efore Suidooster, Vashti Prins (Danielle Hendricks in the soapie) from Kuils River was a student at Stellenbosch University, complaining about a lack of parking and constantly being broke and hungry.

Now she has to deal with being recognised in public, but she takes it in her stride as the fame is part of the territory.

“I originally auditioned for another well-known soapie. My agent sent my audition tape to Suidooster and I was asked to come for an audition. It was my first live audition ever, and I had no clue what the proper way was to do things. Needless to say I was a funny wreck, but I got the part, so yay!” she says.

She is also a talented singer. She completed her schooling at Stellenberg High School in Bellville and was a member of the Tygerberg Children’s Choir.

“I still want to record a cover record and have an authentic behind-the-scenes video made of my singing because it is a different talent that I haven’t really exposed to my audience yet and it would mean overcoming a fear,” she says.

Her inspiration has been Lindsey Abrahams and her classmates from her thirdyear acting class.

“I didn’t know any of the big names in the acting industry at all and am still acquainting myself with them, but I knew this talented and driven lot in my third year. All of them went on to do great things in the industry and have been leaving their marks on the industry, and as cheesy as it sounds, it really gave me the balls to believe I could do great things in the industry too,” Vashti says.

“I also want to do an all-night road trip with a special friend, get another piercing and more tattoos, travel overseas with a good group of people, be in a human hamster ball ... aah there’s so much! I am only 23, the world is literally my oyster!” she adds.

Her acting genes are an equal combination of her parents’ genes and she hopes that when they read the article, they’ll spoil her.

She obtained her degree in Drama and Theatre Studies in 2015 and her honours in Acting in 2016.

“To relax, my friends and I enjoy a music

“It’s a tough industry, but despite that I’d encourage young actors ... They need to believe in themselves more than anyone else ... festival every now and then, maybe karaoke at Manila Bar, or otherwise we enjoy food and trying out new places we haven’t tried before, or Netflix and chilling.

“My family and I pretty much enjoy driving out to Hout Bay or Kalk Bay or going for breakfast or lunch or we’ll all watch something together,” she says.

To switch off from being an actor she reads something light, listens to music, dances mindlessly, chats on WhatsApp, scrolls through Pinterest or laughs at videos on Face­book. She wishes going to the gym or doing yoga were part of her list, but they just aren’t!

“Desiré Gardner and Marco Spaumer are the jokers hands down on the set. I struggle

to get through scenes with them. I’ve been in trouble a lot because I just can’t stop laughing at them.

“I go through phases of inspiration and currently I am inspired by my best friend Cher Dreyer, a designer. She is just unapologetically herself and she allows herself to be open minded enough to learn from things and experiences outside of her comfort zone, which has given her a great sense of creativity and maturity.”

Vashti says Dreyer is also fearless in her ventures and in representing herself.

“She inspires me for these reasons and I’d like to embrace this kind of mentality too, just to reach beyond my own little world or frame of reference. I have four tattoos and I am pretty sure people don’t know where I hide the other three,” she chuckles.

According to Vashti, acting is definitely not all glitz and glamour.

“It’s a tough industry but despite that I’d encourage young actors who are serious about acting to be persistent in their passion and dreams. They need to believe in themselves more than anyone else and grant themselves more compassion than anyone else.

“They need to start creating as soon as they can with whatever they can. I’d also advise them to ground themselves deeply because this is a brutal industry, but if you’re grounded well within yourself, even the strongest winds can’t uproot you – but don’t allow that to make you closed minded either.

You need to remain your authentic self and allow your passion, if it’s real passion, to drive you forward and be hungry for whatever you want in this industry. Also, practise and expand your skills everyday and nurture it. Most of all, don’t allow other people’s opinions to be what defines you – you choose what is good for you and what isn’t,” she says.

Trust fights for kids’ rights

T

he Carel du Toit Trust is calling on the South African government and all sectors of society to ensure that all children who are deaf/hearing impaired have access to quality education as part of Human Rights Day today (21 March).

According to Dr Diane Bell, director of the Carel du Toit Trust, around 5% of the world’s population or 360 million people (WHO, 2016) live with hearing loss, with nearly 32 million being children.

“The vast majority of these children live in the world’s low-income and middle-income countries.

“In South Africa, approximately 6116 babies a year (17 babies every day) are born with hearing loss.

“The way that humans perceive their world is mediated through sensory experience. Of all the senses, it is hearing which

fundamentally facilitates communication and fosters social interaction, allowing people to forge relationships, participate in daily activities, learn, grow and develop as human beings,” she says.

Catch Garth Taylor at GrandWest AVRIL FILLIES

B

efore Garth Taylor burst onto the South African music scene with his hit single “Why” in 1998, he was doing cover songs of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Lionel Ritchie, Simply Red and Neil Diamond. He is celebrating 20 years as a singer/songwriter and will be singing this song at the TygerBurger and Suidooster Grand Jol at GrandWest on 5 May as part of the performing acts.

“It doesn’t matter if I sing my latest songs, the patrons always ask for an encore of “Why”. Luckily this was not a one-hit wonder, as I’ve recorded “Only With You”, “If I Gave You My Soul” and Islands in the Stream”, my duet with Melanie Lowe” he chuckles.

Garth hails from Zimbabwe, grew up in Durban and is currently residing in Johannesburg.

“My music is influenced by a lot of musicians like Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Maroon 5 and James Morrison. If I could make an album or do duets with two international stars it would be with Bruno Mars and the late Whitney Houston. Bruno is the next big singer after Michael Jackson. He is a hard worker and has dance moves to die for. Seeing that Whitney is not around, I am collaborating with Judy Boucher to sing with her, so watch this space,” Garth says.

Garth knew he had made it in the music industry when he was asked out of the blue to perform at the wedding of Sir Richard Branson’s son, Sam, to Isabella Calthorpe in South Africa.

“The event was kept under wraps and all the details secretive.

I was only asked if I was available for the date and if I could sing “Fly Me to the Moon”. I had no clue that it was a Branson do and only found out the who, what and where of the event when we were on our way to the reception. Sir Richard came to thank me personally on stage after the guests had left the reception and that is something I will always cherish. He invited me for a drink but the security was adamant that I should leave with the other

guests,” he says.

Garth dedicates a fair amount of his time to foundations that support cancer research and is actively involved in charities for abused women and children.

“I grew up in an orphanage and was bullied at school. If you are bullied and you do nothing you will stay the punching-bag of the bully.

I started with kickboxing and when the bully tried his luck again I stopped him in his tracks and he never bullied me again.

“Women and children are the vulnerable ones in our society and I have no respect for men who abuse or mistreat them. I started my own kickboxing dojo and am teaching women and children how to defend themselves, although I detest violence,” he says vehemently.

Garth loves the outdoors, fishing and modifying cars. He became the South African amateur kickboxing champion in 2014 and has a blue belt.

“Growing up in an orphanage, I know how important it is when celebrities come to visit. I still have a picture of me as a young boy sitting on the lap of a sports star and what that picture meant to me. I visited the St Martin’s Children’s Home in Durban after “Why” became a hit to give back to the less fortunate. I went to the shop to buy clothes and sweet treats to spoil them when I first visited. I still go back and they see me as their hero.

Twee laat speke in Epic sing vir Alta CARINA ROUX

wee fietsryers wat mekaar al van hul kinderdae af in Goodwood ken, pak tans die uitmergelende Cape Epic-bergfietstoer aan ten bate van die Alta du Toit-nasorgsentrum vir intellektueel gestremdes in Bellville.

Niel Rossouw en sy spanmaat, Leon Erasmus, albei deesdae van Brackenfell, het Sondag weggespring in die wêreld se grootste bergfietswedren wat plaasvind oor agt dae (van 18 tot 25 Maart) en strek oor 658 km.

Rossouw is die eienaar van Byers Security Solutions in Goodwood en dien tans op die nasorgsentrum se beheerraad. Hy sê hy is al sowat vyf jaar betrokke by die nasorgsentrum nadat Byers die sekerheidsdienste vir die sentrum se jaarlikse Sonskynfees begin borg het. Niel ry vanjaar sy tweede Epic.

Toe hy in Desember hoor sy gereelde fietsrymaat, Francois du Toit, sal nie meer saam met hom kan deelneem nie, het hy vir Leon genader. Leon is ’n ervare fietsryer wat al

10 Epic-toere voltooi het. Albei was leerders aan die Laerskool Goodwoodpark en Hoërskool J.G. Meiring, maar Leon is ’n paar jaar ouer as hy, sê Niel. “Ek het altyd gedink as ek oor 40 is, wil ek hom nader om saam in die veteraanafdeling te ry,” sê Niel. Hulle het besluit om heel jaar vir Alta du Toit-nasorg te ry.

Niel sê deur sy fietsrykontakte kon hulle al heelwat bydra tot die nasorgsentrum. Du Toit, wat weens ’n oorsese reis aan die Epic moes onttrek, is die bestuurder van Perdeberg-Motors in Malmesbury en het daartoe bygedra om ’n rolstoelhystoestel vir voertuie vir die sentrum geskenk te kry. Hy kon ook afslag van R60 000 op ’n nuwe Sprinterbussie vir die sentrum beding. Niel kon ook met sy kontakte in die sekerheidsbedryf reël dat kameras by die nasorgsentrum geïnstalleer word. Fietsry bied ’n wonderlike geleentheid om mense te betrek en Niel sê hy het onlangs sy 18de Kaapstad-fietstoer gery en langs die pad ’n paar bandjies van die sentrum verkoop. Die bandjies is gemaak deur die kliënte van die nasorg en pas om ’n fietsstang. Marina van der Meulen, bemarkingshoof van die nasorgsentrum, sê die idee van die bandjies is om fietsryers wat teen ’n moeilike opdraande moet uitry, te laat dink aan die uitdagings wat intellektueel gestremdes elke dag ervaar. Niel en Leon neem deel in spesiaal ontwerpte fietsryhemde met die Alta du Toit-sentrum se kenmerkende hart. Die hemde en die bandjies is beskikbaar op bestelling. Marina sê die Alta-span kan ook geborg word vir elke kilometer wat hulle in die Epic trap. Al die geld wat ingesamel word, sal gebruik word vir die versorging van die intellektueel gestremde persone by die nasorg.

Verlede week het Niel en Leon vir hul ondersteuners by die nasorg gaan kuier. Niel sê hulle het vir die mense by die nasorg ook spesiale hemde en vlaggies laat maak. . Van der Meulen nooi almal om die projek te ondersteun.

Biblioteke soek hul ‘verlore varkies’ B

iblioteekgebruikers in die Kaapse metropool word versoek om uitstaande biblioteekmateriaal aan die biblioteke in hul woongebiede terug te besorg.

“Tans is daar meer as 20 000 items uitstaande en dit sluit in boeke, studiegidse, DVD’s en CD’s. Van die top20-boeke wat uitstaande is, sluit in kinderboeke soos Die drie varkies, Die lelike eendjie en Frozen.

“Die studiegidse is hoofsaaklik vir gr.12leerders vir vakke soos aardrykskunde, rekeningkunde en wetenskap. Die mobiele biblioteekdienste word die meeste geraak en daar is sowat 2 500 items wat nie terugbesorg is nie,” het JP Smith, burgemeesterslid vir veiligheid, sekerheid en maatskaplike dienste in die Stad gesê.

Die biblioteekdienste ontvang en hanteer materiaal namens die provinsiale biblioteekdienste.

“Wanneer gebruikers nie die materiaal terugbesorg nie, is die Stad verantwoordelik aan die provinsie vir die verliese gely.

“Ons is tans besig om te bepaal hoeveel ons verliese vir 2017 is en soos dit nou lyk met die meer as 20 000 vermiste materiaal, beloop die verlies byna R1,8 miljoen.

“Personeel werk ekstra ure om die gebruikers op te spoor wat die boeke en/of studiegidse uitgeneem het. Hul tyd kon vir beter dienslewering gebruik word, maar die gebruikers wat nie hul materiaal teruggebring het nie, weerhou ander daarvan om dit te gebruik,” het Smith gesê.

Hy het gesê dat geld maar skraps is om seker te maak dat die materiaal tersaaklik, voldoende en aktueel is, en as die materiaal nie terugbesorg word, is dit vir die personeel ’n uitdaging.

“Gebruikers wie se boeke agterstallig is, kan hul boeke tot 24 Maart (biblioteekweek) terugbesorg sonder dat ’n boete gehef word. Ek nooi almal dus uit om vandeesweek hul biblioteek met die uitstaande boeke te besoek. Van die biblioteke in die woonbuurte het ook spesiale programme wat hulle gedurende die week en die skoolvakansie aanbied,” het Smith gesê.

Die tema vanjaar is “Biblioteke, die hart van die gemeenskap”.

“Die biblioteek en die personeel speel ’n belangrike rol om jongmense se gedagtes te slyp en hulle bloot te stel aan nuwe wêrelde wanneer hulle deur die biblioteekdeure stap. As jy die vinnige ontwikkeling van die digitale wêreld in ag neem, sal daar seker baie wees wat vra wat die nut van biblioteke is. Ons het net meer as 1,1 miljoen geregistreerde lede, wat hieroor gaan verskil.

“Ons probeer alles in ons vermoëns doen om biblioteke ook ’n waardevolle naslaanbron te maak.

“Die onlangse bekendstelling van PressReader het ook mense die kans gegee om die digitale wêreld te betree en plaaslike en internasionale publikasies te lees,” het hy gesê.

Kom dans by laerskool Die Boeremusiekgilde se Kaapstadtak hou op Vrydag 23 Maart ’n dans by die Laerskool Bellville-Noord.

‘Greeders’ the cause of dogs’ suffering Schadenfreude. A German word meaning pleasure derived from another person’s misfortune.

I have to admit I felt a smidgeon of this guilty pleasure recently when I came across the story of a woman who had been scammed out of R16 500 when she attempted to buy a puppy online. Now my lack of sympathy does not come from my obvious thoughts on the gullibility of someone who would pay much money to a complete stranger online for goods they do not have, and have no guarantee of getting ... rather, my point has to do with the utter dismay I feel at people who buy animals from breeders and petshops.

Dog breeders – or “greeders”, as I prefer to call them – are the main cause of the suffering of hundreds of thousands of animals, especially dogs, around the world. And I am not just referring to the so-called “backyard breeders” – I mean ALL breeders, even the so-called “professional” ones. With thousands of dogs being euthanised every year due to a lack of homes, any person who breeds dogs is worthy of contempt. If you buy a puppy from a breeder or pet shop, you are contributing to this overwhelming problem – demand creates supply.

I have been involved in animal welfare as a volunteer rescuer and foster “mom” for several years now and I know firsthand how difficult it is to find good homes for wonderful dogs that would make fantastic companions if just given a chance.

And I am not only referring to mongrels, mutts and “township specials”.

Thousands of pure-bred, pedigreed dogs are languishing in shelters. With a breed-specific rescue organisation for every breed you could possibly think of, there is absolutely no need to buy a puppy. I have fostered dozens of purebred puppies of several specific breeds.

And yes, puppies are cute, but they are not always the best option. When you get an older dog from a shelter or rescue organisation, you can be assured that it has been house-trained, socialised and selected for your specific needs (children, other pets, space, level of activity). And the most important thing of all: Giving a deserving animal a second chance makes your heart happy! Just ask anyone who has ever adopted a pet. – Erica Wessels, sub-editor and animal lover.

Samaritaan gee weer hoop Ek het ’n ruk gelede my beursie op my bakkie se dak gesit terwyl ek my dogtertjie in die bakkie laai.

Ek het gou die vullisdrom uitgesit en toe in die bakkie geklim en met die beursie nog op die dak, skool toe gery. Langs die pad het dit natuurlik afgeval en toe ek by die skool agterkom dit is weg, het ek omgedraai in die hoop dat ek dit nog êrens sal vind. Maar my soektog was tevergeefs.

Verlede week het ’n goeie Samaritaan, genaamd Mercia, my gekontak om my te laat weet sy het my beursie. Sy het agter my gery en gesien hoe dit van die bakkie af val. Sy was dapper genoeg om in die middel van die pad te stop om dit op te tel, terwyl daar bedelaars ook soontoe gehardloop het.

Sy het moeite gedoen om my in die hande te kry.

Dit is ’n storie van hoop en ’n inspirasie vir ons gemeenskap om te weet dat daar nog sulke goeie Samaritane soos Mercia in ons gemeenskap is.

Niemand help vrou wat in pad val Ek skryf hierdie brief na aanleiding van ’n nare ondervinding wat ’n vriendin van ons op Saterdagoggend 17 Maart oorgekom het.

Sy is woonagtig in Mabelstraat in Oakdale, Bellville.

En soos almal seker weet is dit ’n dubbele eenrigtingstraat (renbaan) na Durbanweg.

Soos gebruiklik was sy met haar hondjie aan die band op pad na die kafee op die hoek

van Barnard- en Mabelstraat om haar koerant te gaan koop. Met die oorsteek van die die pad, het iets onverklaarbaar gebeur.

Sy het geval, en lê toe in die middel van die ryvlak.

Nodeloos om te sê, niemand het haar gehelp nie, Motors het om haar gery, party het stilgehou, maar nie een het hul verwerdig om haar te probeer ophelp om uit die pad te kom nie.

Sy het op eie stoom orent gekom en na die kafee gestap.

Sy het beserings aan haar gesig, hand en arm opgedoen.

Is ons dan nou so gevoelloos dat ons mekaar nie kan help in ’n oomblik van nood nie?

Dit is so ’n teleurstellende gebeurtenis.

Om met jou bure te praat is deesdae nie ’n opsie nie. Die gevolg is dat hulle met opset hul reeds blaffende hond of honde verder aanhits om nóg meer te blaf. Respek tussen bure bestaan lankal nie meer nie en rusverstoring is aan die orde van die dag. Selfs ’n welverdiende Sondagmiddagslapie is soms onmoontlik oor die bure se blaffende honde.

Kudos to these Kraaifontein cops A few months ago we had problems with a small business we contracted to work at our house. He (the business owner) never showed up or returned our money.

I got fed up and went to Kraaifontein Police Station to lay a complaint.

Warrant Officer Geswindt and Captain Wilson handled my case. Warrant Officer Geswindt managed to get hold of the businessman and he set up a meeting between us. I did not have much hope and was very sceptical of what could be done.

I thought I would be brushed off for being so gullible and naive, paying over such a large deposit and letting it drag on for so long, but I was pleasantly surprised.

They questioned him and cornered him, asking him why he wasn’t repaying our money, what did he do with the money, etc. and they explained to him that it amounted to theft.

(A concept that he strongly denied when I told him hew was stealing.)

What meant a lot to me was the fact that they never lost their cool, they were never disrespectful but firm, courteous and helpful, and both of them had a very calming effect on me.

I walked out feeling positive and grateful.

After that I was constantly kept up to date with the case as well.

To make a long story short, I just wanted to say thank you, I am really grateful that my case landed on the desks of Warrant Officer Geswindt and Captain Wilson and I am really satisfied with the way the case was handled.

Tygerberg Hospice hosts fashion show

The Monte Vista Neighbourhood Watch is collecting marshmallow Easter eggs as part of their Easter charity project.

The eggs will be distributed to less fortunate children in the community.

If you are able to support, please drop off donations at Little Rascals Nursery School at 9 Gordon Avenue, Monte Vista. They can also be collected if necessary.

Donations should be in by Wednesday 28 March so they can be distributed in time for Easter.

Tygerberg Hospice hosted a fundraising fashion show at Louisen­hof Wine Farm on Saturday 10 March. Volunteers modelled dresses provided by Vintage Touch and Grace Garments, as well as dresses donated to the Tygerberg Hospice shop. The models were Amy Friester, TanÊ Koorts, Jasmine Joseph, Jemma de Wet, Angelique van der Nest, Francis Whitaker, Erin-Marie Gleeson and Emily Erasmus.

Workshop for the jobless youth Love Is Community Project, in conjunction with Catalyx Consulting Services, will be hosting a two-day workshop for unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35 years as part of the ABSA Ready to Work Programme.

A

27-year-old aspiring artist from Elsies River has been informed that his first music video has been listed on DSTV music channel, Trace (channel 325).

Singer-songwriter, musician, commercial model and jewellery designer Shiraaj “Bruno Raaj” Andrews chatted to TygerBurger about his musical journey, which he says started at a young age as he has always had a passion for music. “I started singing in 2009, but had no vocal ability. I’ve always loved singing and listening to music.”

Andrews, who currently resides in Mitchell’s Plain, says that in 2007 he had a lifethreatening experience caused by a tackle during a high school [Spine Road High] rugby match.

He fractured his skull, but was not aware of the severity of the injury when it occurred. “After the tackle, I blacked out for a while but as soon as I woke up I insisted on getting back on the field. I started experiencing intense headaches two days after the match. My mother took me to the hospital.

There they did a CT scan and the doctor’s first response was that ‘it doesn’t look good’.

The doctor was not keen on operating because this could’ve resulted in more complications. I was prescribed antibiotics for eight months. Almost a year later I was back on the field.”

After completing his schooling, Andrews joined boy band Xpose [in 2009] where he was able to improve his singing ability to a decent standard. In 2010 the band had their first performance and entered SA’s Got Talent where they made it to the theatre audition stage. Performing on bigger platforms led to the group sharing the stage with the likes of Louqmaan Adams, Karin Kortje and James Bhemjee. In 2011, Andrews says he found another passion and started studying

“I completed my studies at Cape Peninsula University of Technology where I graduated with a national diploma in 2014. After this I started focusing on my music and becoming a solo artist. I wrote my first single, ‘Heartbreaker’, that year, but it never materialised due to various reasons. I then collaborated on the song with Beeza and released it in 2016, and it has been listed on Bush Radio and Goodhope FM.” Andrews says his second single, “Cool”, has also been playlisted on Goodhope FM and has been accepted on the KFC Soundbite. And

then there is “How ‘Bout Now”, the single being considered on Trace. He explains that he met an artist called Ally B at Bush Radio, with whom he collaborated on the hit track.

“After writing a hook for Ally B, we collaborated on this song (‘How ‘Bout Now’). We also worked on creating a music video.”

He says he was over the moon when he received the confirmation that his music video was being considered. The process to have a music video listed on Trace involves sending it to Trace and then there’s a 90-day period for the music channel to respond.

Going forward, the rising star says he has done a collaboration with Super Star Ace on a song titled “Wambina”, but the song has not been released as yet.

He has also approached Idols SA season 13 winner Paxton Fielies (of Bishop Lavis) for a collaboration, but this is yet to be finalised as she is signed with a label.

Selim Kagee set to perform at the Artscape Theatre

op-opera sensation Selim Kagee will return to the Artscape Theatre stage from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 March with his new show, Love Story.

Kagee will once again capture his audience with the sophisticated and romantic style of music that has made him so popular, as he presents a selection of immortal songs of love performed with an orchestra.

The show, brought to life by Kagee and his 18-piece orchestra, featuring some of South Africa’s most creative minds and talented musicians – including Trevor Fischer as musical director and award-winning music producer Camillo Lombard – promises to take the audience on a magical journey of love.

he Kraaifontein City Football Club and World Sports Betting Tournament starts today (Wednesday) and the hosts, who are the defending champions, have been drawn in Group D, which is seen as the “group of death”.

Top runners spearhead race The Bellville Stadium will host the Cape Town leg of the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge Grand Prix series on Sunday.

Some of South Africa’s top road runners will spearhead the race, which has again attracted over 20 000 runners. The 10km run starts and finishes at the stadium.

Last year’s winner of the Cape Town race and overall winner of the Grand Prix series, Kesa Molotsane, will be at the start. The Kovsies (University of the Free State) distance runner, who was better known for her exploits on the track, has taken road running by storm in a personal best of 32:59.

Also at the start will be Rene Kalmer, back on track after giving birth to a baby girl last year.

The 10km runners start at 07:00, the walkers at 07:30 and the 5km racers at 08:00. Besides position prizes, there will be plenty of lucky draw prizes and entertainment for those who stay for the prize-giving.
