Vagrants move to mall REYANA STEYN

Measures are being put into place to tackle various issues such as safety, the influx of vagrants, excessive dumping and drugs which have become a major problem at the Delmar Centre. Various roleplayers gathered at Northlink College on Thursday where a meeting was held to discuss

what can be done. The shopping centre, which is situated in the heart of Panorama, has become a hotspot for vagrants who have made an open space opposite the mall their home and frequently loiter at the centre. This poses a safety threat to the shoppers and even the Panorama, Welgelegen and Plattekloof (PWP) neighbourhood watch members who patrol the area. On Tuesday one of the neighbour-

hood watch members was attacked when he tried to get a vagrant to move from the Delmar Centre premises. “It was between 20:00 and 22:00 when the incident happened,” says the member who wishes to remain anonymous. “I asked the man to move away from the premises and then he ran. I gave chase and he ran towards a set of bushes. I then ran after him and flashed my torch to see where

he went and suddenly he came at me with a knife. I had the radio in my hand and called for backup. The District Watch and police came within minutes and the man was arrested and charged with riotous behaviour.” Rudi Krige, owner of Delmar Centre, says he is fed up with having to deal with the vagrants. “They are a nuisance to the shoppers and they should be in some kind of shelter or something. This

is a continual problem.” Lynnette Norman, a committee member for the PWP neighbourhood watch, says a solution needs to be found immediately to deal with this situation and that’s why these meetings are being held. “The vagrants do whatever they want and it is unacceptable. People’s lives are in danger and we must ensure that all measures are put into place to better this.” . To page 2.
