Bouwerk word brouwerk REYANA STEYN
Marthen Van der Eems from Kuils River took this picture entitled ‘Chameleon having his lunch’.
. Na bladsy 2.

A picture’s worth a thousand words. This is something three youngsters from the northern suburbs have already learnt when they took magnificent photos for the National Geographic Kids’ Young Photographers Competition. The competition in its sixth year is in association with Spur Steak Ranches and has once again attracted amazing photographs from its young readers. The winner was announced last month with three youth from Welgemoed, Milnerton and Kuils River making it to the finals. The popular photography competition drew over 2 200 entries in its four categories: Animals, I Love South Africa, People and That’s Funny. “We were very impressed by the imagination, skill and creativity of the entries that we received this year,” said Fiona Thomson the National Geographic Kids’ Young Photographers Competition editor. “The winning photographs were impressive with regards to simplicity and originality.” Francois Grobler (nine) from Welgemoed, says he was ecstatic when he heard he was a finalist. “We were at the beach and my

mom and I thought it would be great if we sent this pic for the competition.” His mother Christa Grobler says she is proud of her son. “We wanted to enter the ‘that’s funny’ category because not many youth enter that one. We took various pictures and then we chose this one out of the bunch to send in. We are so happy that he won.” Marthen Van der Eems (12) from Kuils River says he enjoyed taking his picture of the chameleon. “We have chameleons in our garden and so my sister helped me take the picture. It’s great that my picture was selected.” James de Swart (six) took the picture of a parrot with his head tilted backwards, entitled “I bend over backwards for you”.“It was cool and awesome being a finalist and winning the prize for my picture.” Cindy de Swart, his mother, says they used to own a parrot her son was fascinated with him. “He loved the colours and when we were looking at pictures to take he said to me that he wants to take one of the parrots because he loved the colours.” Each finalist won a Spur meal voucher, a year’s subscription to National Geographic Kids magazine, a camera and binoculars courtesy of Nikon.
