Two local parks get ‘grabbed’ City officials condemned land invasion in strongly-worded statements after the apparent grabbing of land at two City parks in Wallacedene last week. Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, says the invasion of City property and land prohibits effective service delivery and the development of open spaces. At the site in Wallacedene (pictured) play equipment was damaged, and thrown in the streets, which posed a health hazard for children, he says.

eturning Grade 11 learners of Belhar High School are up in arms because they believe that the school is not adhering to the coronavirus safety protocols. A spokesperson for the group of unhappy learners says they are concerned about their safety. “Our school does not meet the government safety requirements. A group of learners in my class brought our concerns to the principal since the school has opened up for Grade 11s, but the principal was too arrogant and said we should leave school if
we don’t feel safe. It was very disturbing to me when he told us this, so we took it upon ourselves to make us heard. We phoned the head office in Parow and the department of education, but there was no answer because people are all working from home. We went back to the principal and he refused to speak to us,” says the learner who wants to remain anonymous out of fear of victimisation. The learner says the safety officer at school doesn’t have the necessary qualifications. “Our toilets at school are a mess and only being fixed now that we are coming back to school. Our temperatures are being taken, but measure as ‘dead body’ tempera-

tures. Teachers are smoking at school when it’s currently illegal at school and in the country, so our safety clearly does not concern them at all,” says the learner. Bronagh Hammond, Western Cape education department director of communications, says the Grade 12 cohort has been at school for over five weeks and there have been no issues with social distancing and the wearing of masks. “There were no complaints regarding the health and safety protocols. The department monitored their screening process and social distancing protocols – they were all in order. The Grade 11 learners returned for the
first time on Monday 6 July and were taken through the orientation programme. The first complaint regarding the Grade 11 learners was made on Monday 13 July – the Grade 12s have indicated that they do not want the Grade 11s to be at the school. This is the first complaint I have heard from Grade 11. No learner has been asked to bring sanitiser as has also been claimed. The department has procured sanitiser for the school. We have also provided guidelines, masks, thermometers for screening, orientation materials and advice on how to manage Covid-19 in the school. The school has been adhering to the protocols,” says Hammond.
