BELHAR: YOUTH MARCH PEACEFULLY

esidents, youth activists along with learners and teachers from Excelsior High School came out in their numbers in Belhar as they marched peacefully against gangsterism. The march was part of the Belhar Youth for Change Revolutionary March on Friday 26 July. The procession began at Erica Park,
close to Excelsior Secondary School; and moved peacefully through the community – collecting learners from Belhar High School, Symphony High School and Perseverance High School on the way to the Belhar Police Station. “Stop it, we don’t like it!” co-organiser Chelsea Philander’s voice boomed over the overhead speakers attached to a moving van. “We have had enough,” Philander chanted, in Afrikaans, to the moving procession en route to the police station.
The march was organised after the killing of 18-year-old Grade 11 learner, Reywen Williams in the area on Friday 19 July. The march was peaceful, with every participant being urged to move in an organised manner and to maintain an orderly front line. The participants were mostly learners from Belhar High School, Excelsior Secondary School, Symphony High School, Perseverance High School and community members who wish to see an end to gangsterism.

“It was a huge success,” said Belhar Youth for Change Revolutionary march co-organiser, Keegan Nathaniel, following a significant turn-out of participants. According to Nathaniel, the community expects to receive feedback from the police by as early as today (Wednesday, 31 July). “We want to see more visible policing, and visibility in schools from Monday,” Nathaniel said.
