SAFE OPEN SPACES: COMMUNITY ORGANISATION CLEANS UP
Playing safe in Leiden C
reating a safe and clean public space for residents is the main aim of the Leiden Youth Development community organisation as they take steps to beautify their open spaces. Henry Booise, one of the founding members of the organisation, says they have taken it upon themselves to clean their public spaces, to ensure the youth in the community have a place to socialise. Last month the group, along with several youth from the community, identified an area that was once a dumping spot and completely turned the space around into a community meeting place. “We decided to clean this dumpsite so that our children have a place to play and enjoy themselves and not have to walk far to get to a park,” Booise says. He claims that there is currently no park in the community for the children or adults
to enjoy. “We have many open spaces, but no space to relax and have fun. It is important to have a place where children can socialise in a healthy manner, as it keeps them away from the negative elements in the community,” he says. Booise says that after cleaning the open space it became evident that the youth are interested in socialising and participating in positive activities. “We had over 300 young people join us for Youth Day, it was incredible and made us realise that we need to continue with creating a platform where our youth come together and take part in positive events,” he says. Booise says they will continue to put their hands together to clean up and beautify their surroundings. “Through this experience we have learned that by taking responsibility for our living space we are able to deter criminal activity, root out the negative elements and take back our community.”
