MALL: SHOPRITE INVESTS IN DELFT COMMUNITY
New centre a delight for Delft ASTRID FEBRUARIE @astridfebruarie

elft residents can now shop at one of the biggest retail stores in the country after Shoprite opened its new store in this community last week. The R170 million shopping development has created various job opportunities for the unemployed in the community, with several other stores also being part of the development. The project, which commenced in September 2016, will also house a Clicks store, a Cashbuild hardware store and 50 smaller shops to be occupied by small businesses in the community as part of the development. The smaller stores will ensure that local businesses become part of the development. Subcouncil chairperson, Courtney van Wyk, previously said that Shoprite is definitely making a huge impact on the community. “They are investing in our community and have created many job opportunities with this development.
Cape Town has servicedriven economy “We hope that in future they and other businesses will invest in our community again,” Van Wyk said. City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee member for Area Central, Siyabulela Mamkeli, attended the grand opening last week and delivered a speech. “This occasion is important in that it shows that the City is succeeding in building a city of opportunity that creates an enabling environment for economic growth and job creation.

“We realised as far back as 2013, through our Economic Growth Strategy, that the structure of the City’s economy has a number of characteristics that differentiate it from the rest of the country,” he said. Mamkeli said that whereas mining and quarrying still remain important sectors in other parts of the country, Cape Town has become a mostly service-driven economy. As such, wholesale and retail trade are some of the sectors that drive Cape Town’s economy.
Informal sector should be included “This means that the opening of this Shoprite store here in Delft does not only bear testimony to that, but also creates job opportunities that will serve to take a significant number of our people out of poverty,” he said. Mamkeli said that many people are aware of the challenges that the community of Delft faces daily, which include substance abuse, crime and unemployment, along with many other challenges. “While we as government can create an enabling business environment, the onus is on you as the community, including investors, to partner with us in providing the products, services and skills for the economy to grow and provide jobs that will change the plight of the Delft community,” he said. Mamkeli said that while the City applauds and welcomes this much-needed investment, he also wants to challenge the Shoprite Group to consider opening up further opportunities by providing a conducive environment for the informal sector to operate in their space.
