BELHAR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FORUM: VARIETY OF PROGRAMMES RUNNING AT HUGUENOT YOUTH CENTRE
Forum for the youth ASTRID FEBRUARIE @astridfebruarie
A
s part of their aim to uplift the youth, the Belhar Youth Development Forum took a number of children from the community on their very first excursion to the Iziko Museum. One of the founding members of the forum, Cathleen du Plessis, says the children had a memorable experience. “Thanks to Iziko who sponsored the bus, Albany who gave bread, Chef Connections who donated jam and cake, and Tyredoc and individuals who donated cash so we could feed the children as well,” she says. Du Plessis says the forum’s intention is also to expose the youth to the beauty of the City.
“By exposing them to what the City has to offer, we want the youth to be more positive about their future, especially when they are done with Grade 12 and want to study further. “We also want to give those who are not academically skilled a chance to use their talents and skills to become entrepreneurs in their own right,” she says. The forum is also seeking assistance from the public and businesses in Belhar to join with them and help make Belhar a better place – “where kids can be kids again and where adults are treated with respect, and neighbours look out for each other in positive ways”. “If the City of Cape Town with its different divisions can help us with the resources to spread to the youth and our businesses, we
will have more people working instead of seeking employment,” Du Plessis says. The forum runs its youth programmes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 15:00 to 18:00 and on Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 11:00. “We have a variety of activities in which the youth can engage,” she adds. The forum was recently given the green light to run their programmes at the Huguenot Youth Centre until they receive official confirmation from the City of Cape Town to do so permanently, following their application. Du Plessis, says they made an application to make use of the facility in May, which is still in progress, as the City requested a written proposal and concession forms to be completed. As a non-profit organisation, having use
of the youth centre will make it easier for them to get the youth together in a safe learning environment on a weekly basis. “The centre will give us the opportunity to help enhance the skills and talents of the youth and give them a positive alternative to hanging out at the shops or on street corners where they can get up to mischief,” Du Plessis says. Through their programmes they intend to help the youth and learners who are struggling with reading and to assist working parents by supervising the learners’ homework. They hope to provide arts and crafts, drama, life skills and career guidance classes even to those already out of school. “We will ensure that we make the programmes exciting and keep them short as we do not intend to bore their minds,” she says.
