These single phrases describe the life of 54year-old Vukile Genu, thus far the longest living kidney transplant recipient to have received a new lease on life at Tygerberg Hospital – four decades ago.

When he was still a child on daily dialysis years ago, Genu anchored himself into the hearts of medical staff, rapidly becoming a favourite patient at the Kidney Unit, the hospital says in a statement.

E’River learners leave legacy NOLUVU LUDIDI

he Grade 12 learners of Eerste River Secondary School decided to give back to their community with love in their hearts.

At noon on Monday 27 November, after completing their final examination paper, the Grade 12 class of Eerste River Secondary School left behind their school uniforms for their less fortunate compatriots to follow.

Just before the start of their first exam, the acting principle, David Jantjies, gathered the 169 learners in the school hall and shared his vision with them to help less-fortunate learners with uniforms.

“The response was overwhelming and some of the children were in tears,” he says.

“Most learners do not have much and this is a problem. The few uniforms the school has are not enough to give to those in need, as they range in different sizes,” says Jantjies.

On the last day of the Grade 12 examinations, the learners came to school in their ‘civvies’ with their uniforms in plastic bags and left them on their desks.

“They left behind their legacy to those in need. They left behind such a wide variety

new gender-specific programme hosted by the City is aimed at addressing violence against women and children.

A group of 50 men and several women were addressed by JP Smith, the City’s Mayco member for safety, security and social services, on Wednesday 29 November at the Delft Community Hall.

Smith was joined by Siyabulela Mamkeli, Mayco member for Area Central as speaker at the event.

The new Men and Masculinity programme will be held over the next six months and ultimately seeks to cultivate positive role models while looking into some of the root causes of violence against women and children.

These include gender relations as shaped by tradition and religion, culture, the influence of substance abuse, as well as HIV/ Aids and parenting issues.

The group of 50 comprised the first participants in the project, which is the second gender-specific programme run by Smith’s department, with the first being the Women for Change programme, through which the City conducts domestic violence education.

“You can’t expect behavioural change without unpacking the complexities that characterise the epidemic that is genderbased violence,” Smith said.

“The Men and Masculinity project aims to do just that, by holding up a mirror to men and helping them assess and adjust their view of themselves, the world and their role in it.”

He added that many existing interventions do not include men, who more often than not are the perpetrators of violence and abuse.

“If we are to safeguard our women and children, we need active participation from all members of society, because violence and gender-based violence in particular is a societal problem and not something that can be fixed by government alone.”

Toys for all at Blikkiesdorp party A

lison Samodien from Goodwood is like a modern-day Mother Christmas; the proof of which lies in the work she does in communties like Blikkiesdorp – where she recently delivered almost 2500 donated toys, old and new.

Samodien is the chairperson of Think Yellow, an organisation that delivers essential products to those in need every weekend.

Their latest exploit – together with a number of other care organisations – on Saturday 25 November in Blikkiesdorp – heralded 1843 new toys, 1750 vegan meals and 2000 cooldrinks! This year, Samodien says, her organisation appealed to members to donate a toy of R10 and ingredients for a vegan stew “towards bringing smiles to the faces of each and every child under the age of 14 years in Blikkiesdorp”.

She says members on her Facebook group opened their hearts and wallets, resulting in the donation of the food, drinks and toys.

She had help from the Merry Pop Ins organistion, whose Cathi Levin also put out an appeal. This brought in 705 donated toys in one week, with the aid of Kwemvelo Financial services.

Member Cheryl Terrblanche single-handedly donated 600 toys, Samodien says.

Party packs were donated for the younger kids by the a group of women known as the “Stellenboom women”, from Epping Mar-

ket’s fruit sellers. She adds cash donations were also received from members on the groups to buy food. Samodien says she had help from members to chop and cook the 300 litres of vegan stew. “Vegan members cooked pots and dropped it off to contribute to feeding the children a healthy, cruelty-free meal.” The NPO Dare to Share donated containers for the food and arranged a donation of 2000 cooldrinks, Samodien says.

Samodien and two volunteers wrapped the toys in the weeks running up to the event.

Volunteers on the day were from Think Yellow and Green Laundry, as well as the Blikkiesdorp Joint Committee, Blikkiesdorp Bambanani and, of course, residents.

All remaining toys will be donated to other settlements before Christmas as part of Think Yellow’s annual campaign to bring a smile, she says.

“Over the December period we need donations of non-perishables such as mealie meal, porridge, sugar, soya mince and rice to distribute to the feeding schemes that feed the children in Blikkiesdorp daily,” she says.

“On 17 December Think Yellow will host a cake and tea party for 100 elderly in Blikkiesdorp.” The public is invited to donate a small gift, cake, muffins or decor for this event.

Elsies River kids taught about safety E

lsies River police, the Pink Ladies organisation for missing people and community leaders, along with the local ward councillor, held an event for the children of the area recently.

The day was aimed at teaching the children about their safety, and it was held on the Sleepy Hollow field in 12th Avenue.

This was done especially for its symbolism, as the field is an area in Leonsdale better known for its shootings.

Local Leonsdale ward councillor, Fran Fran-

chesca Walker, said the children were profiled by a number of people, and the police’s sector 3 manager, Adeline de Beer, who dressed up as a fairy to teach them to be safety conscious.

Walker lauded the local police for their work and efforts within their community.

“Such awesome work they [police] do.

Captain de Beer, you and your team are awesome. Sector 3, you guys rock! Thank you.

I appreciate all you do to keep the community safe, safe,” she said on Facebook.

This is according to Dawie Loots, CEO of MUA Insurance Acceptances, who states that damage caused by drought is not a peril that is typically covered by insurance policies, because normally insurance policies cover sudden and unforeseen events, but a drought is a gradual operational cause.

The general principle in insurance is that policyholders should take all reasonable care to safeguard and protect their assets, he says. “In fact, people should act as though they are not insured. This premise also applies in a drought situation – policyholders need to do whatever is reasonably practical to minimise damage when they know about a situation like this.”

Water pipes The current water rationing that is taking place, which involves the complete cutting off of the water supply for short periods, can have a detrimental effect on water pipes, says Loots. “The turning on and off of water can cause pipes to burst, with subsequent risk of flooding and therefore excessive water bills. Clients would have to be aware of this fact and should be more observant in and around their properties to ensure there are no burst or leaking pipes.”

Swimming pools With reports that the water is evaporating quicker than it is raining, homeowners should cover their swimming pools to minimise water evaporation while they are not able to fill the pool due to the water restrictions, says Loots. “Swimming pools are designed to have water in them, so the system, walls and tiling of pools are more susceptible to damage if they are left exposed to the sunlight with no water. Fibreglass pools in particular need water weight from the inside to prevent them from popping out of the ground.”

Homeowners should switch off the pump if the water level drops to below the weir, as this will prevent the pump from sucking in air and in turn burning out, he says. “It is also a good idea to open the cover when it is raining to get as much water in the pool as possible.”

Gardens Due to the fact that drought is not a peril, no insurance policy will cover the reinstatement of gardens due to not being able to water the plants, says Loots. “Even though homeowners are prohibited by law and water restriction limitations from watering their gardens, they can still try to catch rainwater, use greywater or even get a borehole installed – therefore there are certain measures you can take to save your garden.”

In order to find out exactly what is and is not covered by the insurance policy, it is best for homeowners to speak to their broker who will be able to guide them through the complexities of the impact of drought on their insurance, concludes Loots.

Khathalelana holds thank­you high tea T

he organisation Khathalelana, meaning care for one another, hosted their annual high tea fundraiser on Sunday 19 November at Roosendal High School.

The event, which was well supported by community members, family and friends, was an opportunity for the organisation to not only raise funds, but to honour those who have worked hard for the organisation in the past year.

Khathalelana does charity work within the community and at Roosendal High School by offering a learner assistant programme (LAP) and a livelihood programme, which privides meals and sandwiches to the community.

“We have smaller projects within this programme, and the organisation is still work-

ing on future objectives,” says founder of the organisation, Marlene Jameson.

At the high tea, Jameson handed out certificates and gifts to the volunteers in recognition of their hard work within the community.

In turn, the volunteers surprised Jameson by performing a dance as a means of thanking her for her leadership.

Team leader Elvira Witbooi and fellow team member Denise du Plooy also expressed their appreciation to the LAP learners who made use of the organisation’s homework, reading and exam preparation classes, with Grade 8 learner at Roosendal High School, Abduraghmaan Benjamin, being awarded the prize for the most academically improved learner.

Grade 8 learner Abduraghmaan Benjamin from Roosendal High School received certificates for participation and most improved academic performance. He also completed a youth leadership workshop at Community Chest.

Benjamin was awarded a computer stand and chair as part of his prize.

A total of 171 suspects were arrested in the Blue Downs cluster over the weekend as the police’s festive season operations started in full swing.

The suspects were arrested for the possession of a variety of drugs, stolen property and dangerous weapons, as well as drunk driving and an array of serious crimes, including murder and attempted murder.

On 2 December, Ravensmead police seized a firearm while patrolling in Uitsig. Police saw a suspicious-looking man, and upon approaching him, he threw the firearm away before jumping over various fences, managing to evade arrest.

On Sunday 3 December at about 01:00, Mfuleni police arrested three suspects aged 23, 24 and 28 years. The suspects have been charged with murder and appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday 4 December.

In an unrelated incident, two firearms were found abandoned in Wesbank in Mangold Street and Rowellen Crescent. A third firearm was also found abandoned in Wesbank, along with three live rounds of ammunition.

On Saturday 2 December at around 20:36, Belhar police arrested a 24-year -old man for the possession of 1980 mandrax tablets and a sachet of dagga.

The arrest took place in Bloulilie Street, Belhar, after a search warrant was executed at the address.

Police want to assure residents that festive season operations will continue throughout the festive period in support of the police’s quest to keep communities safe while celebrating.

Workers at HIV clinics treated to delectable lunch DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

o celebrate World Aids Day this past Friday, the Desmond Tutu Foundation in Cape Town, in partnership with Butler’s Pizza, delivered lunch to the many over-burdened health care workers at local HIV treatment clinics across Cape Town.

In the far northern suburbs of Brackenfell and Kraaifontein, City clinics provide ART treatment and care to some 7300 patients, excluding Kuils River patients who are referred to Sarepta or Kleinvlei for treatment.

Between January and October this year, 598 tested positive for HIV at City clinics in this region, according to JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security and social services. A total of 1723 HIV tests were conducted at Brackenfell clinic where 47 tested positive; 12 000 at Wallacedene and Bloekombos clinics where 520 tested positive, and 2017 at Kuils River clinic where 26 tested positive.

In South Africa as a whole the picture is bleak, with about 270 000 new HIV infections and 110 000 HIV-related deaths in South Africa during 2016. It is estimated

that about seven million South Africans are currently living with HIV. “We know how tough it is to manage a never-ending stream of patients – many of them affected by HIV. We wanted to show appreciation and support for those who are on their feet day in and day out providing health care services to thousands of Cape Town’s citizens. Our aim is to keep HIV on the local and national agenda and to recognise the immense task our health care workers manage every day,” says a spokesperson for the foundation. In addition, the pizza outlet invited clients who ordered pizzas until 3 December to donate R15 towards the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in return for a smart Aids ribbon keyring.

Although South Africa has the largest HIV treatment programme in the world, it is estimated that just over half of those living with HIV are on antiretroviral treatment, according to Dr Amy Herman-Roloff of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in South Africa.

“Research has shown that starting ARVs earlier keeps people healthier longer by cutting the risk of serious illness or death by 53%. It also cuts the risk of developing Aids by 70% and lowers the risk of passing HIV to a sexual partner by 96%,” she says.

Book to help prevent abuse A new book, written in language children can understand, is now available for free to guide parents and role players on preventing child sexual abuse.

The release of the book coincided with World Aids Day on 1 December, but also forms part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

The authors, a social worker and a clinical psychologist, have more than 50 years of combined experience in the field of child protection. It is for this reason that Edith Kriel and Marita Rademeyer decided to use that combined knowledge to develop the book, titled Preventing Child Sexual Abuse: A Resource for Parents, Caregivers and Teachers.

The activity book, available from Jelly Beanz, a non-profit organisation that works with children and families who have suffered trauma and abuse, is written in a way

that engages children and guides parents step by step in making a serious discussion fun. “The parent thus has the privilege of being the first person to discuss sexuality with the child and to cement healthy values in this very important part of a child’s life.

“Children are bombarded with sexual messages on television, social media, magazines and on the internet. Young people are being exposed to pornography at a rate never experienced before in our country. Unfortunately children often act out what they have seen, which has led to an enormous increase in children being abused by other children,” the organisation says.

Jelly Beanz believes that parents need to engage children in honest conversations about sexuality.

hat is better than a brisk walk on a sunny day if the ocean beckons at the end of that walk? This was all part of the activities on a day out for a group of Elsies River children when the local ward councillor, Franchesca Walker, and students from the Parow Northlink College campus took them on an out-

ing. Some of the children had never even been to the beach before, Walker says.

“An awesome day was had by all. We walked from Muizenberg beach to St James beach – lekker exercise! The children were swimming – many of them for the very first time. It was really lovely to show them that there is so much more to life than the daily shootings and killings they have grown so accustomed to,” Walker says.

The group was enthralled by the scenic route to Simon’s Town and everything turned out wonderfully, with the kids also being spoiled with a special package to celebrate their day out.

“Even though I am now 40, in many ways I feel like I’m still crawling, and I’m looking back at my journey from being an aspirational doctor, coming from a relatively conservative Muslim background where both my parents were doctors, and how I actually journeyed to becoming a stand-up comedian,” says Moosa.

As an award-winning comedian, actor, writer and presenter, Moosa is one of South Africa’s most popular and acclaimed funnymen who just happens to be a qualified medical doctor as well.

Known as the “Comedy Doctor”, he certainly seems to have the remedy for the nation’s ills – a healthy dose of laughter.

The Life Begins tour will also see Moosa performing in Newcastle, Durban and Empangeni.

“The show is very philosophical and existential. n Wednesday 29 November, the children at Zebulon Educare in Leiden, Delft received their very own Santa Shoebox at the special Christmas party held by a representative from the Santa Shoebox Project, Juanita Africa.

The educare centre run by principal Lizle November and two staff members, currently caters for 47 children aged between six months and six years old.

From the youngest to the oldest child was individually called up – to loud cheers from their peers – to receive their box from November and Africa and to take a photo.

Zebulon Educare was started by November and is run from her home in Delft, where she resides with her family.

Zebulon applied to the Santa Shoebox initiative for 2017 and their application was approved and assigned to Africa to oversee.

“The Santa Shoebox Project is an annual event, whereby members of the public can log on to the project website at www.santashoebox.co.za and select a child to whom they will donate a shoebox filled with prescribed items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, facecloths, soap, an educational item, sweets, toys and clothing items,” says Africa.

“These boxes are then wrapped, labelled and dropped off at designated collection points around the country. At the end of the year, these boxes in turn are delivered to the relevant community organisations around the country who have successfully applied, and the gifts are handed to the children at a planned celebration party.”

Africa says she has been involved with the initiative for the past six years, but that this is her first time handing out boxes at Zebulon.

“The success of the project can largely be attributed to its personal nature – donors give gifts to children whose names, ages and genders are known,” says Africa, who ensured each box was individually marked with the name of each learner.

WP’s athletes awarded W

estern Province Athletics (WPA) rewarded its top athletes at an annual awards evening held at the Athlone Civic Centre on Friday.

Members were awarded for their commitment and achievements throughout the season.

Marcel Otto took home the Coach of the Year award. Otto is the coach of Antonio Alkana, a member of the SA team and the new SA record holder in the 110m hurdles.

The men’s Athlete of the Year award went to Lungile Gongqa who won the Two Oceans ultra-marathon and the 42.2km of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in September. He also achieved the standard time required for three 10km events at the Central 10km race in April.

The men’s Junior Athlete of the Year title was awarded to Breyton Poole, who won the high jump at the IAAF world junior championships in Kenya earlier this year. He’s at the top of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) world ranking for u.18 boys.

Women’s Athlete of the Year is Dominique Scott, who is eighth on the IAAF world ranking for her best time in the one mile (in-

doors).

The women’s Junior Athlete of the Year title was bestowed on Julie Vercuiel, a hurdler who is 11th on the IAAF world ranking for u.18 girls.

Anthony Timmy Timoteus, the SA cross country silver medallist, took home the Cross Country Athlete of the Year award, an award that was won by WPA great Owen Machelm in the year Timoteus was born.

Tamzin Thomas, WPA and Southern Region 100 and 200m champion, was rewarded with full colours, while Luke Davids, who represented SA at the Commonwealth Youth Games, received full colours for his bronze medal at the South African championships earlier this year.

Geraldine King received an award for representing the country at the Southern Region Championships earlier this year. Hilton Keith Langenhoven just missed out on the Paralympic Athlete of the Year award, but was recognised for his brilliant international season.

Danone is doing good Registration for the 2018 edition of the world’s largest soccer tournament for kids between 10 and 12 years is now open.

Schools across the country are invited to become part of the Danone Nations Cup, which touches the lives of over two million people annually.

Next year will mark the 19th edition of the tournament, which is the brainchild of Danone, the world’s biggest producer of dairy products. South Africa has been participating in the tournament since its inception and has won the world title three times: in 2003, 2007 and 2009.

The tournament is run in partnership with the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) and it comprises games beginning at cluster level, with winning schools progressing to regional and then provincial levels, culminating in the national finals where the national champion team that will represent the country at the Danone Nations Cup world finals is identified.

Last year, over 2700 schools registered to play in the initial rounds of the tournament, which was the highest number of schools to have registered in the history of the tournament in this country.

In 2017, for the first time, schools belonging to the Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association joined the tournament and hosted their own final. The number of schools from the association is expected to grow substantially in 2018.

Among the schools expected to be the

first to enter are Benny’s Sports Development and Academy from Limpopo (2016 national champions) and the defending champions, Mophela Primary School from KwaZulu-Natal. The former school, under coach Mbishi Mokwena, has already started preparing their team.

The basis on which the competing nations decide on their champion team differs from country to country. In South Africa it is an inter-school competition. Other countries send their top club youth sides or academy teams, whilst others select regional or even national teams at u.12 level.

The Danone Nations Cup is built on the fundamental principles of participation, friendship, accessibility and fair play.
