arow Centre has jumped in to help 112 people, including 25 children and eight babies, who were left homeless when their wendyhouses burnt to ashes in the early hours of Sunday 17 December in Elsies River.

The community has come out en masse to support their neighbours, most of whom lost everything in the fire that burnt the Gaba Village, Leonsdale, informal settlement to the ground.

“Elsies River is part of our shopper community, and we want to show our support in their time of need,” says Parow Centre marketing manager, Esley Solomons.

The Leonsdale Civic Centre has since been turned into a temporary refuge for the survivors, and donations of all kinds have started streaming in.

Local ward councillor, Franchesca Walker, told TygerBurger: “The families will be receiving their new structures on Tuesday and continued support will be given to them. Even though these families went through a traumatic experience, their morale is good and positive and their spirits are high.”

Walker says that on Sunday morning at around 03:00 she received a call from a resident reporting the fire. Eighteen shacks burnt to the ground.

Derrick Wilschut succumbed to smoke inhalation and passed away after trying to assist neighbouring residents in their wendyhouses as the fire gutted the area.

First Neighbourhood Safety Team A

n additional 86 Law Enforcement personnel were deployed to the streets of Delft on Monday 11 December as part of the very first Neighbourhood Safety Team (NST).

Ten policing precincts with the highest crime rates have been identified by the City of Cape Town as precincts in which the NST initiative should be rolled out.

The aim is to deploy between 90 and 120 personnel in each precinct over the term of office as a means of expanding the existing enforcement interventions while also enhancing the City’s social investments through social development projects.

Delft, which will serve as the test case before the initiative is expanded, is the first of 10 police precincts where the NST will be deployed.

Over the years, the City has explored various interventions to address crime in the most vulnerable communities, which include a stabilisation unit, school resource officers, neighbourhood safety officers, a gang and drug task team and a violence interruption intervention.

The NST initiative combines all of these into an integrated intervention that will be sustained for at least three years.

This initiative is in line with the City’s goal of creating safe communities as part of the Organisational Development and Transformation Plan.

The NST will enjoy the support of various social development programmes such as those of Women for Change and Strengthening Families, an integrated task team called a focus table in each police sector, as well as the deployment of social workers by

the Western Cape Department of Social Development.

“The fight against crime doesn’t rest with Law Enforcement alone. In fact, many crimes are but by-products of deeper social issues that cannot and should not be solved through enforcement only,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith. “We have pulled in other crucial services and programmes to be part of this initiative and it will be interesting to see the impact that this has on crime levels. Furthermore, the NST will be a constant presence in the area of deployment, which means that the team members will over time develop a good understanding of the dynamics in the area, which will in turn aid and inform their approach.”

The NSTs will work on a shift basis in Delft, with the support of specialised units from the Metro Police and Law Enforcement departments, particularly in areas such as public transport interchanges, shopping areas and hotspots within the area that are identified through crime pattern analyses as being in need of patrolling.

“While this is a City initiative, we are working very closely with a range of partners including the South African Police Service, Western Cape government and the local community policing forum, who have all pledged their support.

“It’s important that we have a shared vision and a common goal and I am hopeful that the future crime statistics for Delft and any other area where the NSTs are deployed will reflect the downward trend that we expect,” explains Smith.

BCF to host annual gala dance evening T

he Belhar Community Forum (BCF) will be hosting its annual gala dance evening on Friday 29 December at 20:00 at the Kasselsvlei Civic Centre in Kasselsvlei Road, Bellville South. Admission is R100 per person.

The BCF is a non-profit organisation seeking to make Belhar a safer and more attractive area for its residents.

“Like many other areas in the country, Belhar is constantly under the threat of crime,” says Nic Titus, member of the BCF management committee. He further states that with the many learning facilities in the area, students walking to and from the various institutions are often vulnerable to robberies.

“Youth unemployment presents further

social challenges in Belhar and the surrounding areas,” says Titus. “The BCF remains committed to supporting the various neighbourhood watch and community policing forum structures in the area, as well as the campaign for a fully resourced police station for Belhar.”

Titus describes the role of the BCF as assisting with problems in the community by engaging with the Belhar community, local authorities and parastatals with regard to various matters. These matters include issues such as traffic congestion, illegal dumping and the condition of the road network.

“Huge new housing development projects currently being undertaken in Belhar will place a greater amount of strain on infrastructure. The concern of residents over in-

adequate infrastructure is one which the BCF continues to strongly bring to the attention of the relevant authorities and planners responsible for housing and related services,” explains Titus.

“The BCF management committee is also currently working towards establishing a steering committee to proceed with getting community support for the establishment of a special ratings area (SRA), which will provide supplementary municipal services and thereby significantly enhance the quality of life for the residents in the areas in which the SRA operates,” says Titus.

The BCF annual gala dance will assist with the funding of the organisation’s various activities.

Officers win safety and security awards M

etro Police sergeant, Sandile Sololo from Mfuleni, smashed the competition and grabbed the coveted Officer of the Year award at the City of Cape Town’s annual Safety and Security Awards ceremony on 7 December.

The awards are designed to acknowledge staff members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, often under trying circumstances.

Belhar Scout Group holds annual awards

T

he 1st Belhar Scout Group held their annual awards event at the All Saints Anglican Church Belhar recently.

Present at the event were the group’s cubs, scouts, scout leaders, past members, parents and friends.

Cubs, scouts and scout leaders were presented with awards in both the cub and scout categories.

Special mention must be made of Jordan Leaner was awarded Cub of the Year and Rifqah Links was awarded both Scout of the Year and Best Inspection.

Jodie Layman who was awarded Scouter of the Year and Laylah Benjamin was awarded the very

special Lee Kennedy and Ian Benjamin Scouting Spirit Award for displaying strength, character and boundless energy. “This award honours the legacy of the two brave scouts who are mentioned in the award and who were members of our group. Their loss is still felt by all who knew them and now their memory will live on for years to come,” says group leader, Lillian Layman.

The group welcomes new members between the ages of seven and 17. The group meets every Monday and Tuesday at the All Saints Church Hall.

We have been receiving donations in the form of clothing, blankets, shoes and cooked food from various community members and organisations, churches and private businesses.”

Walker said this is a show of support to the affected families.

“What was heartwarming was when people outside Leonsdale and Elsies River came to give support. We had young children emptying their cupboards to bless others.”

Walker said it is suspected the fire was caused by a candle left unattended.

Elsies River police spokesperson, Captain Daphne O’Reilly, says that police were alerted to the fire and attended to the scene.

“On arrival a few wendyhouses were alight and the fire was spreading. Necessary assistance was called in to contain the fires.

“Derrick Wilschut (49) died on the scene.

An inquest docket was opened for investigation.”

Member of the provincial legislature, Reverend Dorothy Gopie, visited the scene together with clergymen to render their support and provide basic supplies to the families. Gopie and Walker also discussed how to create a sustainable relief mechanism for people in the ward in need of housing.

The new Mobile Alcohol Evidentiary Unit that was launched last Friday.

runk drivers, beware: You are now being targeted by a vehicle that can pull you over to test your alcohol level where you stand, and then send that information directly onto a mainframe where it is recorded.

Provincial minister for transport and public works, Donald Grant, on Friday 15 December unveiled the new Mobile Alcohol Evidentiary Unit as a further means to combat drunk driving.

The unit forms part of the province’s anti-drunk driving campaign, Operation #BoozeFreeRoads, and is a collaboration between Grant’s department and the Directorate for Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the police.

The new unit is a state-of-the-art, repurposed emergency services vehicle and the first of its kind in the country, which makes it possible to conduct on-the-spot alcohol checks to determine whether a driver is under the influence, while also increasing the likelihood of a successful prosecution.

On-the-spot testing makes it possible to release innocent suspects immediately, Grant says in a statement. It also means that no blood testing is necessary.

By removing the need for personnel to accompany suspects to distant testing centres, the technology also enables more Law Enforcement officials to be on duty at any time, he states.

“This new mobile unit is an exact duplicate of the existing infrastructure inside the Vangate Alcohol Evidence Centre (AEC), which is required when properly administering Evidentiary Breath Alcohol Testing (EBAT), commonly known as the Dräger breathalyser.

“The mobile unit has been repurposed at a cost of just over R400 000, and has been designed to meet the same prescribed standards of the Vangate AEC,” Grant states.

The unit also has video and sound recording capabilities, data-capturing computer programs streaming information back to the Vangate AEC, portable alcohol screening devices and road signage, as well as a water supply and generator.

The unit is currently being deployed on a pilot basis at various hotspots.

Smiles at Sunlight’s water

This unknown woman smiles as she holds her free 10 litres of water.

ater, water, water!

This is what was brought to Delft residents recently by a washing powder manufacturer.

Sunlight first donated 64 000 litres of water to residents across the Peninsula in November, with a further 144 000 litres being donated in December to bring some relief ahead of the festive season.

On 12 December they visited the Voorbrug area near the Delft Police Station, making some waterhappy residents smile very broadly.

They visited Ruyterwacht at the Ruyterwacht Day Hospital and Brooklyn at the Usave store on 13 December, and on 14 December they visited Austonville in Blackheath at the Usave, Belville South at the police station and Scottsdene at the Kraaifontein Day Hospital.

eing Santa Claus often means working long hours and having weird conversations with strange children, for earnings of as little as R200 a day.

According to Claire Cobbledick, head of core business at Gumtree SA, the call for all sorts of Santa Clauses is a hugely popular one currently listed on the classifieds site.

She reports that the ads calling for “a real bearded Santa Claus for a mall job”, “preferably an elderly gentleman with a real grey/white beard” who needs to be “good with kids as he will be posting with them in photographs”, are very popular.

Cobbledick says these receive an average of 100 views and between 20 and 40 replies.

“It’s probably the only job, among the hundreds of thousands advertised on the site, that requires you to be jolly or which sometimes prescribes the size of your waistline or can demand particular facial hair,” she says.

Santas are found everywhere – from malls to Christmas markets, charities, hospitals, private parties and even corporate functions, she says.

So what does a Santa Claus get paid for, besides having children sit on his lap and share their wish list?

According to her, the standard Santa Claus job description on Gumtree includes just this – listening to Christmas wishes – as well as chatting to shoppers about promotions and posing for photos with children.

According to Cobbledick, Santas will unfortunately never be rich.

“Santas usually have to work long hours in a hot suit for two weeks straight, including holidays, and the payments are mostly in the R250 to R500 per day range.”

Although the reality is still sinking in, I am the same old Hennie. I love working with children, and seeing them develop and grow as people gives me great pleasure.”

Bosman already has bookings to travel to Zimbabwe, the USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, Iran and Switzerland next year.

“One day in the distant future when I retire, I want to sit back and say I not only made a positive contribution in growing the sport, but I helped people reach their potential,” says Bosman.

fter dedicating 51 years of his life to karate, Hennie Bosman faces his biggest challenge yet as the new international chairman of Kyokushin-Kan Karate.

This was not the only honour to be bestowed upon Bosman as he was also promoted from shihan to hanshi, making him one of a very few elite karateka in the world with an eighth dan black belt.

This all happened at the recent Kyokushin-Kan Junior World Championships held in Tokyo, Japan. Bosman will go down in history as the very first South African-born hanshi of Kyokushin-Kan Karate, as well as the first international chairman.

Scottish-born legend Len Barnes, who lived in South Africa for many years, was the first hanshi in the country.
