Delft man killed in fire

TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

O

ne man sustained fatal burn wounds in a fire that broke out at a residential dwelling in Sering Crescent in Delft. Twenty-seven-year-old Thembelani Goniwe’s life was cut short in the early morning hours of Sunday 11 February, when a fire broke out in his backyard dwelling. It’s believed Goniwe returned home from a nearby tavern at around 01:00 that morning. A backyard dweller, who was a neighbour to Goniwe, shares his version of what happened. Oscar Rolo (27), says he was asleep at the time of the incident. “Thembelani came home from the tavern around 01:00. An hour later one of the women that stays here came to my dwelling to tell me his place was on fire. “He never had electricity so it might have been a candle that caused the fire. When I got out of bed I saw his body burning at his front door,” explains Rolo. According to Rolo, the fire spread so dramatically that all five dwellers who live on the premises have been left destitute. “We lost all of our things. It’s such a difficult time for us now because we must start over,” says a saddened Rolo. A relative of Goniwe, Andisiwe Busika, says they are devastated by his death. “The last time I spoke to him was on Saturday afternoon. He was such a happy and loving person. The saddest part is that we won’t ever really know what happened because he was alone in his dwelling,” says the 29-year-old Busika. Theo Layne of the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services says the fire broke out at 02:13. “Four wooden and iron structures were destroyed in this incident, leaving 15 people displaced. The cause of the fire remains undetermined,” says Layne. V More photos on page 2.
